planning commission is ousted after the controversial message about allowing the coronavirus to kill the old and the weak. new rules at santa cruz county with authorities vowing to enforce the social distancing. not doing enough to help the homeless during the pandemic. it is 6:00 on this saturday, may 2nd. good morning. let's get a check on the weather from the weather center. >> here is a look at the tollbooth off of the golden gate bridge. this is the ticket will see a few and over the tri-valley, plenty of gray skies. this is the way the day will go

special two-hour remote meeting and voted unanimously to remove the commission chair ken turnage ii after outrage erupted over the facebook poled post. it says that the weak and old are targeting the secular part of the population, and "we will strengthen when this is all settled." ken turnage ii said he was just offering an opinion to let the coronavirus killed the elderly, the weak and homeless. >> i have made my own personal opinion countless times on my f >> somewere in support of him and others were demanding his removal. ken turnage calls the removal of brown act violation and potentially illegal. the post was taken down due to death threats. the judge refused to block the gavin or requesting a

temporary restraining order but the beaches will close for now while the legal battle plays out. the santa cruz county will close the beaches for six hours each day and no one will peak h between 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. as a renewed effort to enforce social distancing. there are exceptions allowing people to walk across the sand to get into the water to swim, surf and get to the boats, but some beachgoers are disappointed. >> weekends, saturday or sunday, i could understand them putting restrictions, but not monday through friday for the locals. >> deputies will be out all weekend aggressively enforcing the beach ban, and they will warn or cite everyone gathering on the beaches. authorities say restrictions are in place for the next three weeks, and that could change the rules after that depending

on how well or poorly they are working. here's a live look at the airport in san jose, the latest implement a face mask policy. anyone traveling through the airport beginning monday are required to wear face covering but not including those under the age of 7. the masks are already required at oakland and sfl. turning violent yesterday at a bacon san francisco home. the housing activists were clashing with police in front of the property on 19th street and castro. two homeless women with a group caed"rim sf" got in the home and the san francisco police moved into quickly shut it down. >> we wanted to make this vacant house that has been vacant for four years a home for two homeless women that have lived in san francisco a very long time. is unconscionable to leave people outside at any time but during the pandemic is unconscionable. >> the mayor says she has hotel rooms to house the homeless but

has failed so far to do so. it appears that a growing number of small businesses are left out of the federal relief efforts. kpix 5 betty yu tells us that for one struggling bay area bar and restaurant this could make or break the future.'s >> i feel like we are left to hang out to dry. we employed 10% of the workforce as the restaurant industry in san francisco. we operate on slim margins. >> reporter: this barrel room is only doing grocery and beverage delivery services with only four remaining employees. at first the owner was heartened by the promise of loans available through the small business administration, and paycheck protection program. >> we did everything right with the applications, and we get nothing. we just keep getting told to wait. >> reporter: the california small businesses have received fewer loans and less money per

eligible small businesses then nearly any other state according to the bloomberg news analysis. fewer than 2/5 got paycheck protection loans as of april 16 compared to 4/5 in the rural states like kansas and nebraska. >> california is getting shortchanged and we are trying to understand why. >> reporter: they sent a letter to elected officials on every level including senator kamala harris who herself wrote a letter to the treasury secretary steve mnuchin and the sba administrator expressing great concern over the failure to provide help to the california small businesses, demanding answers. >> if the large companies receive all of the funding we will lose all of our culture. when people can go back to work it will be a really bleak environment. >> that was betty yu reporting. the governor issued guidance

last week to stitch up some live post that larger companies use to get loans under the paycheck protection program. at least 17 public companies announced they would get back nearly $115 million in loans. in the shadow of the san francisco city hall demonstrators demanded that the governor loosen the lockdown, joining many protests across the country. >> fewer than 100 people gathering with flags and banners insisting the shutdown is now doing more harm than good, pointing to the millions that have lost their jobs and many that may lose businesses. the governor said he is making decisions based on data and not political resistance. in the s sacramento yesterday protesters were pushing back against the governor stay-at-home order. the protesters originally said

they would stay in the cars but mostly they ended up gathering around the capital. ci distancing. the chp arrested 33 protesters and handed out citations in violation of the order. they deployed three different divisions with over 200 officers going toe to toe with hundreds of demonstrators but only one of the 33 arrested were taken to the sacramento county jail and the rest just received a citation. governor gavin newsom was asked about the protesters. >> if i got involved in every protest up and down the state i would not be involving myself in efforts to start to make meaningful modifications to the stay-at-home order and attend to a lot of the issues in the state. i defer to our team, the california highway patrol and particularly at the state capital. i did not get involved directly in permitting decisions, and that would be an unfortunate place for a politician or elected official to. i care deeply about the issues. i am ultimately responsible for

the public health. >> the governor says we are getting very close to making changes to the state stay-at- home order. >> it is weeks and not months, about four or five days ago i said that but i will say many days, and not weeks, so long as we continue to be prudent and thoughtful in certain modifications. i think we will make some announcements. >> the governor maintain that the behavior is the only factor setting us back, calling on people to resist the urge together in groups. california is up to 655,000 total tests done with an average of 25,000 tests per day. the governor says it is progress but not nearly enough. and at the oregonare buckin shelter at home orders. the sparsely populated county began reopening businesses and churches. people must remain 6 feet apart in large gatherings are still prohibited with seniors still

encouraged to stay home. so far modoc county has not recorded a single case of the coronavirus. a possible breakthrough in the battle against the coronavirus and the fda approved an experimental drug from the bay area company to treat coronavirus patients and on friday the fda granted emergency use authorization for remdesivir. the company that produces the drug, gilead, said they would donate over 1 million files of the drug, on the way and enough to treat 140,000 people. in the south bay the santa clara county convention center which had been converted into a temporary hospital, and it is no longer needed for that purpose. in march the national guard set up to and 50 beds in the facility to treat patients that did not require intensive care. in san jose the nues protte of the maternity war at the

patients if necessary. there is a struggle and data for the california nursing homes. 62% of the facilities in the state were cited for efficiency in infection prevention and control. experts say the pre-existing insufficiency made the nursing homes bonner bolton the coronavirus. >> there are repeat offenders that will continue to operate that way even if they are getting a fine. >> six nursing homes are granted immunity and lawsuits related to the coronavirus. governor newsom says he is weighing his options. coming up, business owners in chinatown raced thousands of dollars to provide protective gear for the front-line workers. plus, the bay area city finding a way to honor high school seniors.

the business owners in san francisco chinatown are coming together to help the front-line workers as part of the chinatown merchants united association. they have raised over $28,000 to supply several local hospitals, police and fire stations with protective gear. the organization says that even though many of the businesses are closed that this is a way to support the community. some bay area communities are trying to make it up to the thousands of high school seniors that do not get to take the traditional graduation walk on stage in front of family and friends a. the graduates are cef spcognition fferently with from eveson that ss ttreet.

but above the clouds what we cannot see our higher clouds that are part of this weak storm system. they are trying to bring very light rain to the north bay later today. in order let's skip toward the inland area of alameda county looking over the tri-valley and dublin. here's what it looks like from the roof here at kpix 5. temperatures are actually warmer than you may remember yesterday. that is if you are up this early and out and about yesterday out in the yard, it is about 6 or 7 degrees warmer in many spots thanks to the clouds. that higher level of clouds we will see after this burns off is part of that system with rain on the far northwest coast. it does not look impressive and is not impressive, but some of this will hold together to try to get down here. by the early afternoon today, we will talk about a slight chance of rain. let's take a closer look and play this more slowly.

this gets us into the afternoon with the best better brain in mendocino county. we will get close to 5:00 with showers but that is about as impressive as it will look all day. and later afternoon maybe a few showers trying to hold together through sonoma county. we could see maybe a light shower two holding together for marin county. if you get rain today in sonoma county or marin county, barely measurable. it will mainly look like the possibility of rain more than anything else. the totals don't add up to much. cloudy and rained up north with daytime highs today that will be the coolest temperatures of your entire 7-day forecast. low 70s in the south bay, 72 in san jose with concord at 71 and livermore at 72. we will top out at 70 in pleasanton with alder creek at

70. we will top out at 67 at petaluma and mill valley. if we get to the far northern sonoma and mendocino county the two places we will likely see rain with daytime highs in the upper 60s to low 70s. tomorrow we have much more sunshine for everybody with the exception of the morning low clouds. after that was start a warm up. that does say 90 for friday. at the end of the week but that is a ways out so we will not focus too closely on the fact that we have 90 showing up at but after today with clouds and sprinkles we are set for a sunny warm a for much of the rest of the seven day. >> that is scorching hot, much hotter than it has been. >> we actually got up to 89 the friday before last, and that was in santa rosa and concord

for that one day. technically, we have not yet hit 90 so we will see how this plays out. the coronavirus has canceled this year's tulip festival in iowa, but some are still going to see the flowers. the annual tulip time festival usually draws about 175 visitors each year. last year in the town where the festival was held, they had 500 visitors but they expect those numbers will grow over the weekend with businesses partially beginning to reopen. city officials are asking everyone to follow the social distancing if they visit. coming up, a north korea leader reappears after being out of sight for several weeks in the country released a photo to try to stall the rumors on his help. india extends that nationwide lockdown to the middle of may as the government tries to limit the spread of the virus.

north korea is reporting that kim jong-un made the first public appearance in three weeks after global speculation over his help. the government released this photo of him opening up fertilizer factory. the photo shows him cutting the ribbon with his sister behind him. rumors of his health began after he missed the celebration of his andfatbihd april 15 they have extended the nationwide lockdown in india another three weeks. they are now prohibited. the schools, colleges, theaters, malls and places of worship will also remain closed. this comes after the government arranged transportation for stranded migrant workers, students and tourists to return home. the lockdown is expected to last through may 17.

interpol is ewtrick that dr dealers are using. they are allegedly posing as food delivery drivers to supply drugs to the clients during the lockdown. this is from ireland to malaysia that are reporting drug couriers are attending to be delivery employees. in spain they rested seven suspects delivering drugs hidden in the bottom of a backpack. there are other cases where the food delivery drivers did not know that drugs were even placed in the bags they were carrying. in you but the streets of havana were empty for may day, the worker state considered one of the most political the streets would normally have flags adorning the streets and there would be people across the island nation. every year there are speeches and marches with the cuban leaders looking on. this year the government asked citizens to sink the national

studios, this is kpix 5 news . >> welcome back. it is about 6:30. thank you for joining us. i am devin fehely. let's start with the weather center. one camera can give us a look at what it looks like everyone with low gray clouds over the bay. this is from the roof at kpix 5 but it looks this way whether inland or in the south bay. we have gray skies but interesting enough for the second half of the day after the clouds go away we have a separate patch above them that is trying to bring light rain to the far north bay. i will show you that in more detail coming up in your complete forecast. sunday morning we have low gray clouds and a little bit warmer today than yesterday at this time. that is not enough to notice in

a big way. in the north bay you are 7 to 10 degrees warmer than yesterday. we have low clouds to start today. we have afternoon showers and a north bay with more on that coming up in a bit. we have a warm up for next week. today is the coolest day in the entire 7-day forecast. by the late part of the coming week, many numbers inland will be 20 degrees warmer than this, close to it anyway. we will get back to the upper 70s, and near the mid-80s over the next few days. 67 in santa rosa with 70 in fremont. i will be back with more on your forecast in a bit. over 64,000 people have died from the coronavirus in the u.s. despite that devastating death toll in many parts of the country protests are raising due to the lockdown orders. 3 dozen states begin to slowly reopen and we have that report

the team hopes that the blueprint will lead to better treatments, and give humans a better fighting chance. maria medina, kpix 5. one cancer drug is in a clinical trial in spain where researchers leave that some of the compounds could end up in a drug cocktail to hit the virus from different angles. hundreds of tennis and housing advocates join forces in san francisco and led a car caravan to demand the canceling of rent. the care band circled the state in city buildings calling a local, state and federal officials to cancel the rent, mortgages and utility payments. protesters noted that everyone should have housing during the crisis and be able to stay safe from the virus. there is a nationwide made a protests, may day protest, demanding better medical gear.

the protest on friday by the california nurses association and national nurses united are calling on hospitals to provide the highest level of protective gear. kaiser tells us they are following cdc protocols when it comes to the gear and that they are making enough protective equipment that can last through the pandemic. the testing at nursing facilities with health officials requiring all residents and staff in the city's 21 skilled nursing facilities to start testing on the virus. as of today over 20,000 people in san francisco have been tested with an average of 9% testing positive. california is working to care for the caregivers and the state distributed 36,000 stipends so far to workers with necessities in launching. >> the people at skilled nursing facilities were spending the night in the car

because they were scared of going home to potentially contaminate or infecting their community or household. d tores these stipends there needs. >> the state has booked over 78,000 hotel room nights for hotel stays to help the medical workers. the research, the associated press, revealed 2/3 of those signing up for the health court lacked licenses which left a little over 10,000 for the final review. only half of them had been cleared to participate. one group of essential workers in california is often overlooked. thousands of farmworkers have been working in the fields and packing houses help put food on our tables. as kpix 5 reports with len

ramirez, some are showing their appreciation. >> reporter: drivers pulling into this drop-off station at the san jose women's club to help support farmworkers during the covid-19 crisis by donating food, toilet paper, hygiene products, masks, gloves and hand sanitizer. >> i am glad i can help out my community. >> reporter: the drive was organized in three days by an event planner and lifestyle entrepreneur. >> the farmers are some of the most important, essential workers on the line. they are not helping the sick but they are helping everybody. are not provided face mask or protective gear for the workers. >> reporter: the started out in

that perspective over the golden gate bridge. here is the toll bridge view. going up higher than this view with the camera atop the sutro tower, and you can see clouds that we are all waking up to. there is another deck of clouds up. and that is the afternoon. even when these clouds burn off, and they will violate morning as you can see over the bay bridge, there is another set above them that will be sticking around for much of the day. we have a small chance of light rain with that higher deck of clouds. i will show that to you on the future cast in a second. but we do have a chance of light rain in the north bay. mid to upper 50s, but warmer than yesterday if you were out and about yesterday at this time of the day. low clouds and the futurecast picking up on them beautifully, and bringing them back by late morning which is typical. we have a higher layer of clouds above it that will stick around throughout the afternoon

into the evening. this is driven in by this weak storm with rain off the far northwest coast of california. the futurecast will pick up on that band and it displays where the rain is beautifully. it will be rain for the far northwest california. as far as we are concerned this will bring us into late afternoon where we see showers finally arrive from the south at mendocino county. let's take a look and slow this down and watch the progression through the day. if you are getting rain most likely it is around ukiah, willett and mendocino county. after the early evening you can see these green flashes showing up at sonoma. it is doubtful but looks like it is possible you could get light rain but that would be less than 1/100 of an inch of rain and that would come into the second half of the day. under the higher clouds at your daytime highs are low 70s in

the south bay with san jose at 72 and palo alto at 71. we topped out at 71 in concord and 72 in livermore. san leandro at 67 and 65 for berkeley. petaluma at 67 with the far north bay at low 70s with a chance of sprinkles. in your 7-day forecast we have a warm up toward the late part of next week. these daytime highs will be climbing into the upper 80s. in other words, today's the only day like this with a few clouds and cooler numbers. after we get through this sprinkle, we are sunny and warmer for the rest of the seven-day. i'm curious to see what the beaches look like after topping out at 90 by the end of the week . >> wve sn a behaviorbecause people tgeback by e of next week prince william and kate middleton daughter celebrates the fifth birthday and princess charlotte is helping the vulnerable, and we have new
