studios, this is kpix 5 news . the condominium complex had a late-night fire in san jose. the oakland mayor is urging people to shelter-in-place and to stay away from lake merit, a popular spot for the weekend to. it is about 6:00 a.m. on this saturday, may 9th. good morning. i am devin fehely and emily turner has the day off. we have something we have not seen a lot of on these weekday mornings, fog on the road. specifically, the northern half of the bay. did you get some coming in? >> we did see clouds but not a

lot of fog until we got into the city. >> on the golden gate bridge and in the north bay you will find this stuff on the roadways. here is the view off of the tolls at the golden gate bridge. this is like low hanging fruit, trying to find the fog, difficult to see it here. in sonoma county there is an issue and the south bay, looking down in san jose with clouds of. we don't have any fog on the roads here. here is the seen looking back toward mount diablo and here's looking back toward the bay bridge. temperatures are fine, low to mid 50s which is pretty typical. with these low clouds, pretty much cloudy wherever you go, specifically in the east bay and the north bay. remember on the maps like this the number tells you how far down on the roadway you can see. where it says 10 you can see can miles down the road. where it says three-quarters, that is less than a mile and that is where you will run into the trouble spots. on 101 into sonoma county and

in napa give yourself some extra time. but when this stuff burns off not as warm's yesterday, but still warm. we will start a cooling trend today and we will have more on that in a few minutes. a fire erupted after a car slammed into a complex at san jose on dell bar court south of downtown near the almaden expressway. the car ran a stop sign and slammed into the condo. the gas pipe exploded and caught another condo on fire. there are 8 to 10 units in the complex, and so far no word on injuries. there is concern in washington over potential coronavirus infections with 11 servicemembers testing positive for the virus. it's unclear if those agents were recently assigned to the president and vice president.

that news came hours after we learned that the vice president mike pence press secretary tested positive for the virus, and the wife of one of the trump senior advisors also tested positive. we learned that president trump was in the room with his personal ballet on tuesday, one day before the ballet tested positive. oak glen mayor libby schaaf is making a plea for people to avoid lake merit this weekend, and there will be extra police officers keeping a close eye on this popular gathering spot. >> hundreds of people gathered in the grassy areas of the lake merit this afternoon and for the most part everyone was able to maintain six feet social distancing. with mother's day sunday the mayor is desperately asking people to find somewhere else to go. >> we must give the lake a break. >> reporter: oak glen mayor libby schaaf is asking people to make other plans on a trip to lake mayer it. >> we cannot continue to allow

the large gatherings. >> reporter: people at the lake say so long as they stay six feet apart that it should not be a problem. but according to the mayor's office there are potential health concerns, like many people not wearing a mask a, and the number of barbecues and picnics. people are only supposed to be outside to exercise and are not supposed to be gathering. >> please find somewhere else to go. >> you cannot go to restaurants. the only thing you can do is be outside, and the lake is our community, where we have been all of our lives. >> reporter: adrienne and her family came prepared with protective gear while barbecuing this afternoon. she said that she and her son will probably come back this weekend to celebrate mother's day. >> i don't think you can keep everybody and to be honest, so why create problems for people. >> reporter: the ambassadors from the parks department will

be here to hand out masks, and reminding people to stay six feet apart. the police will have an extra heavy presence but the focus is on education, not enforcement. katie nielsen, kpix 5. the latest job or sport shows the devastating impact that the pandemic is having on the economy with the national unemployment rate at 14.7%, the worst since the depression with the staggering 20 million jobs lost in april, the worst monthly loss on record. governor newsom says the unemployment rate could top 20% factoring in job losses and freelance along with undocumented workers. they say there is hope for the economy and the governor says as phase two extend that 70% of the economy is now able to reopen with restrictions. >> look out for your neighborhood business. they need your support. they have not gotten the kind of support they deserve.

you will determine whether or not they will survive. >> modifications to the stay-at- home order's are in effect that nearly two doesn't counties with more changes expected next week. a lot of counties are going a step further than the guidelines and it's not so much about the type of the business but whether they have the right protocols in place. >> reporter: the main difference in solano county is that offices are open again. according to the public health officer, he wanted to base the reopening on whether or not low risk as this was able to properly follow the social distancing guidelines. >> we base our decisions on basic principles, the science of transmission, and not on our own preconceptions of how businesses operate. >> reporter: solano county is moving forward with full reopening of all low risk businesses.

the governor gave individual counties power to move at their own pace with reopening in the counties if they comply with the strict requirements laid out by the state. >> reporter: don't ask don't tell, and they are not doing it by the business sector. >> our issue was not if you were okay or not okay but if you can observe physical distancing. >> reporter: in downtown fairfield there are signs of economic life, with brightly lit open signs back on again after a tough six weeks. >> we hope to open and make money every day, and one day close. >> reporter: the predicament now is to get back the employees that were lost. >> they make more money on unemployment so i've decided to stay home >> reporter: solano county has 351 confirmed cases with the total of seven deaths, but some worry that the numbers will rise with reopening. >> it's kind of scary and i don't think i will be going out just yet. >> there still trepidation with things up in the air with the coronavirus. i think it is important to try to

get back to some type of normalcy. >> reporter: solano county has been working with businesses over the last few weeks to make sure they can protect the employees and the public. if the county season increase in cases, they will quickly reinstate restrictions again. >> if that were to happen it would probably not be a failure in the approach but for failure to adhere to the approach. >> reporter: businesses like restaurants and salons will reopen in phase 3, and they will have to follow the guidelines set forth by the state. for weeks san francisco has been spending hundreds of thousands of dollars every week on empty hotel rooms that were meant for the front-line workers. the city was leasing them when they saw how overwhelmed new york city was when the search it. betty yu brooke ports, reports of.

>> reporter: at the start of the pandemic the city least nearly 1000 hotel rooms for front-line workers that the city said they overestimated the need. 80% of the rooms have set empty for the last several weeks according to the san francisco chronicle. >> it is pretty shocking, particularly when we were told one reason we cannot get more people in the rooms is that it cost too much money >> reporter: on twitter mayor london breed says we need to be flexible when circumstances change. testing results show that low- wage workers are disproportionately impacted so we are converting 556 unused hotel rooms originally intended for first responders to serve these residents. the supervisor matt haney said many first responders told him that they did not know such rooms were available to them. >> i am glad the rooms now are getting repurposed for population for low-wage workers that need them, but i really wish they had done this weeks ago. we were not getting answers to questions that i've been asking

and at hearings for weeks as to why there are so many empty rooms. >> reporter: each room will cost $76. today, for example, there were 751 unoccupied it rooms and 445 the city pays for based on the contract. that equates to over $30,000 in one day. according to the numbers from the human services agency obtained by the chronicle with that figure. >> that was betty yu reporting. the city is facing a $1.7 billion shortfall due to the pandemic. there is sad news for the country music fans in the bay area. >> the saddle rack nightclub is closing its doors for good. it was around since the 70s

but the owners made the announcement friday on social media saying we have withstood disco, new-wave and the urban cowboy fad but could not survive the coronavirus. they made the difficult decision not to reopen. a well known north beach restaurant has fallen victim to the outbreak, and the ristorante franchino's is closing for good. they said they resisted the takeout option because that ran counter to their tradition of italian food served in the dining room. the 30-year-old restaurant will close for good. and san jose the mayor is rolling out a new plan help restaurants prepare for reopening and they will cut the number of people allowed inside and the mayor wants to put an emphasis on outdoor dining with expanding space and wants to let the restaurant use the streets, sidewalks and parking lots to help safely spread out the tables. even when the stay-at-home orders are lifted the question

remains whether people will actually come. >> i've heard a handful of people in their 60s and 70s, and older, said they are wary of going into those places like the restaurants. but for the most part, people in my age group are fired up and looking to get back out. >> the mayor wants to plan for outdoor dining to be ready when the city gets the green light from the health department. coming up, we remember roy horn from the entertainment duo, "siegried & roy". he is died from complications from the coronavirus. a new app geared toward teaching kids how to read while making life easier

roy horn, a legendary las vegas act, "siegfried & roy", died from the coronavirus. our reporter has more from los angeles. >> reporter: the magician, roy horn, half of the "siegfried & roy" act that combines dazzling theatrics with the rare and dangerous animals for decade died from complications of covid-19. "siegfried & roy" had a four decade run in las vegas and made the duo famous. in a statement sick free fish bocker said he lost his best friend. " from the moment we met i knew we would change the world." roy horn born in germany in 1944 during the height of world war ii and took interest in and most from an early age and years later he met his partner while they were working on a

cruise ship. his performance career almost came to a deadly end in 2003 one the white tiger dragged him off stage. roy horn was 75. the funeral services for roy horn will be private with plans for a public memorial sometime in the future. many tech companies are extending remote working setups even with the easing of the stay-at-home orders and facebook confirm that employees that were able to work from home can do so until july. the google employees will work remotely until the end of the year with both tech giants making significant extensions from the previous plans. google has launched a new tool to help parents trying to keep kids entertained while teaching in a home and the new app is the read along. and helps kids learn to read and gives them feedback as they read the stories out loud. the company says the app uses speak recognition to help them

develop literacy skills and is now available in nine different languages. we start this saturday morning with fog on the road in the north bay. let's go to the golden gate bridge to find that. you can see it is a foggy start. i pointed out at the top of the newscast that is often one of the more dramatic looking views to see the fog on the road way. the golden gate bridge is on the front lines of this but most of us are okay in terms of the fog on the road. in the south bay we don't have too much or really any fog on the road down here. but instead they have patches of clear skies in the far south bay and at far southern santa clara county, relatively clear skies over san jose. that's not the case over the bay bridge or the interior of the bay. temperatures in the low to mid 50s meaning we feel just fine, like we would expect it to this time of the day, and this term time of the year.

if you get a 10 on this map you can see 10 miles down the road. at the top of the hour the readings were down to three quarters of a mile but now one mile for senators and 2 miles in santa rosa. give yourself extra time on the road. we will have fog burning back by the afternoon and it will come back tomorrow on sunday morning. we have wide spread low grade clouds with fog on the road tomorrow morning. it will burn off sunday afternoon and come back monday which is typical for this time of the year. let's talk about monday. we have a chance of rain late monday. to find that we just have to look in the pacific were you can see that next storms developing already. we put that in the futurecast and bring it forward. late monday the leading edge of the rain is coming into

northern california which gets us into monday evening. we have the first line of showers coming through. that is just the beginning with a chance of rain in the forecast monday into tuesday. when we look at the amount of rain to get out of this, adding up the totals, on monday there is an important aspect of this. no rain yet but it is the second half of monday we will be filling in the map with rain. we have much less down into the south. throughout monday and tuesday we will add small totals. it is light rain at best. but we have to keep a chance of rain going on the second half of monday pretty much throughout the day on tuesday. daytime highs today, by the way, 10 degrees cooler than yesterday. only 82 in san jose with 73 in hayward. daytime highs will make it into the low to mid 80s for much of the east bay. at oakland you can see up to 70 in oakland and we were 82 in

oak glen yesterday. 81 in santa rosa and they were 92 yesterday. everybody gets about a 10 degrees drop for the daytime highs today. that cool down trend will keep going into a small chance of rain monday and tuesday, and we will clear out at the later part of next week. it was actually really toasty yesterday, so i don't mind a little bit of a gradul easing of temperatures. >> the biggest aspect of the full forecast is the cool down which is what we noticed most about today. we will talk about that more in the second half of the hour when we do this again. a new attraction at the oakland zoo with a young female giraffe relocating from kansas, only two years old and already 11 feet tall. the zookeepers she will be a good match for the four-year-old male giraffe. she is settling in, eating well, and warmly welcomed by the heard. coming up, the russian president marks the anniversary

russian president vladimir putin marking victory day at the anniversary of the defeat of germany in world war ii and lay flowers as a memorial just outside of the kremlin walls and gave a short address about the honor and suffering of the soviet army during the war. it is the most important secular holiday and this year marks the 75th anniversary. it is usually marked with crowds and military parades but with scaled-down due to the pandemic. india is bringing hundreds of thousands of people home nearly seven weeks after

banning all incoming flights into the country. over 15,000 citizens were stranded overseas and your state flights around several countries arrive with homecomings continuing into next week. the citizens will spend 14 days and quarantined after arriving before they can travel home. in spain amid the outbreak in one of the strictest lockdowns in europe, i did not walk alone will get you a fine. there is a hot airplane next to strangers that is still okay. they say there's little evidence of coronavirus spreading on aircraft, but there's also little research. air europa says there is no restrictions on airlines flying with capacity reduction. the mayor reacted furiously with images of italian signaling social distancing, gathering in parks and restaurant.

italy eased up on the two month lockdown with businesses gradually reopening. the mayor says that some people are putting the city economic úrecovery at risk and warned that parks would be closing if visitors continue together in groups. the police patrols have increased in my lawn to control the containment orders. coming up, an update from the white house were two employees have now tested positive from the coronavirus and a new proposal from democratic senators to provide financial help to those most in need during the pandemic. here's a live look outside from san jose. we will be back

live from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix 5 news. welcome back. it is just about 6:30. thank you for joining us. i am devin fehely. let's take a look at the weather. >> in this big monitor is san jose where we have sun hitting the skyline down there. >> i noticed the absence of the fog. >> it's not only the absence of the fog but even those higher clouds, san jose has some of those. but you're getting enough sun coming through that we can see the sunlight gleaming off of the buildings. we switch from the cameras in san jose to take you to the drive on the golden gate bridge where we have a very different

story. this is out will look on 101 working your way through the north bay into moran and sonoma. not multiple reports of fog on the road but enough of them, particularly in santa rosa and petaluma. if you are in the north bay plan on patchy fog and the east bay has gray skies but not a lot of fog on the roadways, so give yourself some extra time and plan on hitting patchy fog. in the east bay temperatures in the mid-50s. we will clear out the fog into the late morning, and the headline is the fact that today is noticeably cooler than yesterday. most locations will get about a 10 degrees drop in the daytime highs. i will show you what that looks like coming up in your complete forecast in a minute. we will talk about a small chance of rain monday night into tuesday. we will see you in a bit. the white house is stepping

up their efforts to slow the coronavirus threat after another employee tested positive. this is the second day in a row that someone around the president has tested positive. ca abby is natalie brand is at the white house. >> reporter: katie miller tested positive for the coronavirus. >> she is not come into contact with me. she has spent some time with the vice president. i understand that mike tested negative. >> reporter: this comes one day after news that one of the president's ballets that served him a meal tested positive on wednesday. >> i do what i have to do. we take very strong precautions at the white house. >> reporter: several aids for the vice president were told to get off of the airplane were testing before mike pence went to meet with people in iowa. the president laid a wreath down to mark the 75th

anniversary of victory in europe day at the world war ii memorial. he and the first lady kept their distance and neither they nor the veterans that were attending wore a mask. >> did you consider wearing a mask? >> no, because i was very far away. >> reporter: the economic advisors are warning about a tough economic ahead after the friday job report showed over 20 million jobs were lost in april. that is the biggest drop since the great depression. >> i don't want to throw out numbers but may will be a tough month. >> reporter: the president continued to predict an economic bounce back during the lunch with lawmakers. >> it is a transition into greatness. because we will do something very fast, and we will have a phenomenal year next year. >> reporter: house democrats are calling for the fourth big economic stimulus package to deal with the financial fallout. senate republicans want to wait and evaluate how the multitrillion dollar measures they have already passed are working. natalie brand, cbs news the

white house. at least 11 secret service employees have been reported to be infected with the coronavirus. 60 other staffers are in self- quarantine. the specific assignments that the workers had before they tested positive have not been disclosed. the former president barack obama is apparently not a fan of the white house response to the virus. according to a source for cnn obama talked about the government action during a web call with those that once served under his administration. in the auto barack obama calls the two administration an absolute, chaotic disaster. he mentioned he feels an urgent need to enthusiastically support former vice president joe biden presidential campaign. here is a live look at the nation's capitol where there is a push to help american struggling financially during the pandemic. senators kamala harris and bernie sanders work among the senators introducing a rebate payment program friday.

that would provide $2000 monthly checks to families in need. senator harris says that these checks would help but that the random bills will not stop so ongoing help is necessary. the coronavirus is wreaking havoc on the california budget, projected with a $54 billion shortfall. the schools will be hit, k-12 with education cut $18 billion over the next 12 years. governor newsom is hoping for help from washington. >> they have one ability we don't which is the ability to meet the moment where the constitution requires us to balance the budget. they are able to invest in the future by borrowing in order to get the states, counties and communities back on their feet sooner. >> the governor promise to protect schools in the march 13 executive order, but next year could be another matter. the governor is also trying to make it easier to vote if

the pandemic continues into the fall. he signed an executive order on friday sending all registered voters a mail-in ballot for the november election. the idea is to mitigate the spread of the virus at the polling sites. the governor stresses it does not replace polling sites which will still be open election day . nearly half of the people that died from the virus in california lived and worked in nursing facilities. and all over 1200 patients have died. the state health department said that number will likely go up. some facilities have not yet reported the data. on friday the governor said he is working with stakeholders and legislative leaders on the question of liability or legal immunity for the nursing homes. oak glen is bringing coronavirus testing to a vulnerable part of the city with the free testing site opening at the roots community health center in east oakland as part of a partnership with "verily", a research division of the google parent company of

alphabet. they will open on monday, wednesday and friday from 10:00 to four p.m. with no insurance needed. the new study shows counties with higher minority populations like alameda county account for over half of the coronavirus cases in the u.s. with 60% of the deaths. >> those that are disadvantaged, and those that have probably lost their health insurance, or do not have proper medical care are at high risk. >> we want to bring this site and we wanted to put it right into the community. >> the city is currently working on opening another testing site in the near future, but the funding is an issue. oakland has closed an additional five miles of city streets to accommodate the social distancing as part of the slow streets program. it is and get giving residents a place to get outdoors to walk, jog or bike while giving them room to keep them from getting too close to others. they have signs posted to

divert the traffic. we posted a link to the entire list of road closures at kpix.com. some area dmv offices have reopened including the office in san jose and in concord, oakland, claremont, san francisco and santa rosa. the dmv is still encouraging customers to use online services unless it is necessary to show up in person. the long wait lines are likely at the dmv offices with induced social distancing as a precaution. >> they told me today was only for essential workers, and basically nobody wanted to help me. everybody i talked to turn me away. >> i just wanted to get my drivers license renewed so i can drive illegally, that's all. >> the remainder of the dmv employees will continue to work remotely. nascar will return to racing but not to the sonoma raceway in june. tens of thousands of fans usually show up for the wine country race but that was canceled this year.

nascar will resume on sunday, may 17, but only at the darlington raceway and charlotte motor speedway. the races will be held without fans as a safety measure. lyft announced all riders required to wear a face covering in an effort to keep the drivers and passengers safe before accepting a ride. the drivers and passengers have to agree to the guidelines with the new personal health certification feature. the drivers will reconfirm health status via the new pitcher every day, and the riders must do so once a week. a new study shows the majority of the california voters support protection for farmworkers, includes those undocumented immigrants. they support employers providing full benefits to the farmworkers staying home sick with the virus.

of those, 79% believe all farmworkers should be included regardless of status including with paid sick leave, medical benefit and replacement wages. if you are wearing a cloth or reusable mask, you can also clean it yourself at home. according to the experts the easiest way is to throw it in the washing machine. otherwise soap and hot water would do the trick. it only works if the mask is made of fabric or reusable cloth. the cdc does not recommend trying to watch the n-95 mask. we are honoring graduate in the last few weeks with pictures, but this young man really stood out. kpix 5 da lin said that even a car crash could not diminish his spirit. >> reporter: willie logan credits his school and family and the support for overcoming his devastating injuries.

>> i have two scholarships. >> reporter: to understand why that is significant, let's go back to january 11 last year. >> reporter: the teenagers were just leaving a high school basketball last night. >> reporter: i cover that story with a van carrying willie logan and five other teenager slammed into a tree killing two girls. he broke many bones in his body with the force tearing off his leg. his brain was so badly damaged that he could not speak. to this day it is speech is still a work in progress. he short-term memory is still a big problem. >> i used to not know what 2+2 was. >> willie had to be re-taught everything. he needed to learn how to care for himself again, to use the restroom or to wall. >> reporter: but this three sport athlete refused to

surrender and put more effort into not only the rehab but is classes. the antioch high school coaches, counselors and teachers spent extra time with him to make sure that he had all of the support he needed. mom and dad say that his faith helped him to maintain his smile. >> to see where he was and where he is now, it is hard not to be completely overwhelmed with excitement, and thankfulness. >> reporter: willie played baseball, football and ran track before the car accident. he is not ready to give up on sports, especially baseball. >> it's much more than a love and more like a passion. i have space to perform and show out. i feel like a superhero on the field. >> reporter: some already say he is a superhero from being in a coma, and now receiving nine college acceptance letters. he will stay close to home at the local community college. >> my tassel is worth the

this mother's day is especially meaningful for one southern california mom and daughter who are recovering from the coronavirus. our cbs reporter chrisb martine shows us how they helped each other overcome the worst of the illness or >> reporter: the bond between adrian hollingsworth and her daughter is even deeper after battling covid-19. 16-year-old so we at a mild case but adrian suffers from type ii diabetes and it it her much harder. >> i got seriously worse and i was really concerned. on two days minute by minute was the debate on whether to call and let's. >> reporter: with her dad still working for the pandemic she stepped in to help care for mom . >> reporter: what was it like

for you going through this yourself and then watching your mom go through it? >> honestly, it is pretty scary, and also really depressing and stressful. >> there underlying medical conditions that make people likely to have a more difficult course of the coronavirus. >> reporter: dr. summer is the doctor for adrian at uc health. >> she was excellent at recovering. >> reporter: mother and daughter are on the mend but still dealing with lingering symptoms including mild fever. >> for the total course of the illness, i would say over 30 days for me. i continue to have neurological symptoms. it is very difficult for me to read, or to write anything, or to even speak clearly. >> reporter: still they say they are incredibly thankful to be together. >> i am just happy she is still with me, honestly. >> i am so grateful i came out

of it okay, but i am even a little bit more grateful that i got to know my daughter in a whole new way, and to respect her in a whole new way. i get to see how she is going into this amazing woman. >> reporter: making this a mother's day to remember. chrisb martinez, cbs news, los angeles. let's switch gears and get into the forecast with the headlines for today the cool down. let me show you first the actual daytime highs are some representative spots around the bay. at concord, you are my representation for inland contra costa county at 82, open at 70 and san jose at 82. those numbers don't give you the contest context unless you remember the number from yesterday. these numbers are much cooler than 24 hours ago. the picture becomes clear. concord at 82 today but 14 degrees cooler than yesterday at 94. you will notice this. oak glen is 70 today, 82

yesterday. san francisco 64 today, and it was 76 yesterday. santa rosa at 82, attended greek dropped from 92 yesterday. here's a beautiful shot of san jose with high clouds lingering and at least we get sunshine lingering into downtown which is much more than we can say for the north bay. here is you going over the golden gate ridge and then debate ridge, looking at gray skies pretty much everywhere other than the south bay. inland east of the hills and toward the tri-valley at concord this morning. as far as temperatures right now, 38% of santa rosa with sun, and concord and livermore. we have clouds back at the
