live from the cbs bay area
6:01 am
studios, this is kpix 5 news . looting breaks out in oakland during a night of protest against the police against the outrage of the death of a black man in minnesota. and suv plowed into the crowd and hit two demonstrators during the protests at san jose. our reporter was nearby and described what happened. a police officer in minneapolis is accused of kneeling on the neck of george floyd for about 8 minutes. angry demonstrators took to the streets in oakland and san jose to protest the death of george floyd in police custody in minnesota. open police are out with 30 numbers from the protest last night saying 60 alleged looters were detained for further investigation. there were 18 other arrests and other law enforcement officers
6:02 am
made four additional arrest and several officers from several agencies were hurt. conditions have quieted down and open but the police have their hands full and our kpix 5 anne makovec join us with the latest. >> reporter: there is damage about everywhere you look in downtown oakland. this is the walgreens across the street from city hall where the windows were smashed. the alarm is still going off and there is graffiti, as you can see, as well. this, again, one of many scenes throughout the area. this is across the street at 14th and broadway where the chase bank was broken into, looted and defiled overnight. it has been a very violent night, and luckily things are calm right now. we want to show you some of the action from last night,
6:03 am
everything that started with a nonviolent demonstration. that is before the fringe group started the damage, breaking windows, looting businesses, large and small. marchers took to the streets just before 7:00 last night. this broke out about two hours later with people fanning out throughout downtown, setting fires and breaking into stores and other businesses. the target at broadway and 27th street was demolished. also a car dealership nearby where cars were stolen, others were set on fire. most of this occurring without any police insight. the police engaged the crowd earlier and several officers were hurt by thrown objects late into the night. that is what devon was talking about, dose seven oak glen officers that were injured and it is basically very dangerous
6:04 am
for them to be confronting protesters at this point. hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars of damage was done. here live at 14th and broadway you can see the aftermath of one of many fires that is still smoldering. this is the dumpster. you can see this picture of several hours later that there is not even any authority at the scene. this is a massive amount of damage for them to try to clean up or even assess at this point. we are keeping an eye on this. i spoke with a gentleman that was here for the protest and he showed me some video he shot. it is massive amounts of destruction. it is absolute lawlessness in oak glen, one of many protests across the country. we will be here to the rest of the morning checking out some of the mess left behind. i am anne makovec live from oak glen, kpix 5. a quick question and you
6:05 am
mentioned that you talked with the protester, is there around two scheduled for today or tonight? >> reporter: this guy seemed more like an onlooker and was not part of the damage or the crime, for sure. you have two factions, the people demonstrating at around 7:00 p.m. they were doing it peacefully and then you have the people that seem to be bent on destruction. it is impossible detail right now what sort of protest may lead to something like this again. >> thank you, anne makovec in oakland. we are hearing from the interim oak glen police chief that posted a video message on twitter. >> we have had demonstrations last night and they started out peacefully, and we stood with our community in the city of
6:06 am
oakland to provide safe and respectful places far demonstrators. what we saw later on in the evening turned violent and disruptive and we want to call on everyone that would come to oakland and stand with us to respect the memory of george floyd and the community to ensure that they are peaceful and respectful of the city of oakland and especially our downtown businesses which have been suffering since the pandemic began. we are thankful for all of the mutual aid and other agency partners that have helped us tonight. as we have seen across the country we saw damage and destruction here in our city. we will be back at it tomorrow. we stand with our community, and we want to ensure that everyone that comes to the city of oakland is peaceful and respectful. thank you. the protest in oakland started peacefully but as the night went on the looting and
6:07 am
vandalism began and we have kpix 5 andrea nakano that was in oakland and shows us the same. >> reporter: at 9:30 friday night protesters started smashing the windows of chase bank, and the walgreens across the street was vandalized and soon after a fire started in the building. what started as a peaceful protest quickly turned violent. the day started with the march of north on broadway, and then back south as the protesters headed to the oakland police department. they were met by line of officers, but the protest initially remained peaceful even though the anger was brewing. the frustration was shared by all here tonight. >> until enough people decide that every life that matters, and it is power to the people,
6:08 am
right? >> reporter: the streets of oakland looked like a war zone by the end of the night with a tug-of-war between those that were focused on the message, and those that were here to cause trouble. >> we are praying for no violence or anything. we need to do this in peace. >> reporter: the protesters left a wake of destruction for miles but in the end they hope their message was heard. >> what will happen after this protest or six months from now question mark we look at officer grant, we look at the jogger and a number of different people that of all fallen victim to senseless police brutality. >> reporter: in oakland, and serena econo. the oakland police are investigating the shooting of two security guards near the federal courthouse less than one mile from the police headquarters where protesters gathered last night but so far the police do not believe that the shooting is connected to
6:09 am
the demonstrations. and the south bay of protest in san jose took a terrifying turn after the heb barrel through the crowd and the driver ran over two people near city hall and countless others were sent scrambling. kpix 5 maria medina was among the group running for their lives. >> reporter: were standing by for a live shot among the crowd fleeing for safety after the white suv ran over two people. the incident was caught on several cell phone cameras but too graphic to show. >> he ran over to people and i saw the wheel go over a person. >> reporter: the officer watching it all unfold said the female driver turned onto santa clara, past the protesters that began yelling and throwing water bottles at the suv. the suv made a u-turn and drove forward toward the crowd before the driver stepped on the gas, reversing and running over two
6:10 am
people. the driver made one last u-turn and took off in the law enforcement officers that were once holding the lines ran to help the victims. >> no regard for human life whatsoever. >> reporter: the mood quickly turned to anger as the police called him protesters to help catch the driver, and sadness for the victims. maria medina, kpix 5. the santa clara county sheriff's office confirmed they were involved in the shooting at that same intersection at the time of the hit-and-run incident but did not say that the two incidents were connected. in minneapolis where these minneapolis police officer seen kneeling on george floyd, one officer charged with third- degree murder and second-degree manslaughter after derrick taubman kneeled on the neck of george floyd for 8 minutes. the video shows at least two other officers kneeling on him
6:11 am
as well and prosecutors expect to file more charges. days of protest followed by nights of mayhem in the twin cities in minneapolis. the protesters defied the curfew last night and gathered outside of the police precinct while another group marched onto the freeway and the national guard was in place overnight and things were calmer than the previous three nights. we are keeping an eye on the destruction left behind by the last night demonstration. coming up we will show you how the protesters took over a freeway and some of the cleanup that is now underway. also ahead, we get a close look at the vandalism during the last night protest in oakland with the window shattered at a local bank.
6:12 am
6:13 am
6:14 am
i am anne makovec in oakland and you can see the damage/from the last night protest, and you can see window shattered. thinking ahead of time would've done the trick against some of these demonstrators that were bent on destruction. you can see they tried to set a small fire over there. across the way at the oakland city center some of the cleanup is underway as they are boarding up the businesses. at this point it's hard to tell how many businesses were hit
6:15 am
but it looks like potentially dozens and the rights stemming from what started as a peaceful demonstration. here's what happened last night on 880. marchers took to the streets just before 7:00 in about two hours before that the angry mob stormed the roadway at 880 and webster street which shut down the roadway in both directions for about a half hour. the chp and oakland police needed to get that freeway clear. but otherwise, here at the street level, they really had to decide which events they would give their attention to. it was worth it as far as the confrontations that would be ensuing with these demonstrators . it looks like, for the large part, that the cops just sort
6:16 am
of backed up when it comes to the vandalism on the street level. i am anne makovec live in oakland from kpix 5. kpix 5 da lin was at the protest when they began and followed the events all night when they unfolded, and after settle down he took a tour of the damage on broadway. >> reporter: here is the inside of this establishment where someone tried to set the fire. >> reporter: and here is one guy breaking what is left of that glass, just one step away people are still trying to cause more destruction. this started maybe about an hour or an hour and 15 minutes ago around 10:00. this is what the construction crews put down earlier today. this is plywood, and they boarded this up to protect the windows, but the protesters
6:17 am
ripped all of the plywood off and started using the plywood itself to break the glass. a lot of them actually went inside causing more destruction inside, and of course they set a fire. that is what is happening right now. the sprinkler system is working to put out that fire. as i walk over here a little bit more, you see more broken windows. let's walk over here, more damage on this side of the chase bank. this is the bus shelter in the glass. you can see on this side of the chase bank, more destruction and damage. all of these windows were basically broken. >> that was da lin reporting. the riots and protest continue to flare over dozens of american cities over the death of george floyd and we are
6:18 am
live with the latest of the unrest in minneapolis. >> reporter: another nationwide demonstrations and and violence after the death of george floyd and in atlanta lighting cars on fire and smashing the entrance úand governor brian kemp ers declared a state of emergency and activated 500 national guard troops. >> what i see happening on the streets of atlanta is not atlanta. this is not a protest. this is not in the spirit of martin luther king jr. this is chaos. >> reporter: did this in new york city where they burned a police bus and at the white house a few hundred demonstrators tussling with the secret service officers, leading to a brief lockdown inside. in portland, oregon, the police
6:19 am
declared a riot after the crowd set the justice center on fire and broken to the mall. about 1700 national guard troops have been mobilized in the minneapolis area with hundreds of protesters ignoring the curfew overnight. firefighters worked through the night to put out several dozen fires that were set by the protesters. >> the action taken will not get the results they are seeking. >> reporter: minnesota governor tim walz waiting for them to go home. >> the wanton destruction and specifically of the ethnic businesses that took generations to build are being torn down. >> reporter: the demonstrations only intensified after the minneapolis police officer derek chauvin charge yesterday with third-degree murder and manslaughter. all four officers that were part of the arrest were fired. michael george, cbs news minneapolis. at least one person was shot and killed during a protest in detroit with several police officers heard across the country from the ongoing protest. it was a busy night and a busy day weather-wise as we join
6:20 am
darren in the weather center. >> reporter: let's take a look at the hi-def doppler where you see showers moving to the north but look at the strikes of lightning showing up on the three-hour loop. most of this happened within the last six hours but it is starting to quiet down about three hours ago. slowing it down look at the last hour and you can see the strikes of lightning showing up in the north bay. this is the same batch that was over much of the east bay three hours ago drifting up north now. is not a lot left now with a few showers showing up in far sonoma county. look where the real action is if you widen your perspective a little bit there is a whole complex of pretty nasty thunderstorms lining up north of the bay area where the focus of the storm will be. here are the rainfall totals
6:21 am
for california as a whole in a bit but first let's come back to the bay area. we will keep the rain going in the north bay with a few scattered showers as i play this ahead until 9:00 a.m. the best from the storm happened overnight. but having said that, we are not entirely done with it. the skies will look storming today and a small chance of a few isolated showers left over, but not really getting a lot out of this and by the evening we are done. looking at the rainfall totals, maybe another 500s of an inch of rain but not much measurable anywhere else. as we change our perspective look up will happen to the far northern fifth of the state toward crescent city, eureka and let's put the numbers on that. we get over 1.5 inches of rain today on the far north coast which is out of the ordinary for this time of the year. this is a very unique system and we miss out on the bulk of thexcitement but not all of it. look at the view from the salesforce tower looking down to the south with light rain.
6:22 am
there is not a lot to that. the storms appear to not have the same structure to them that we will see much lightning in the south bay. here's what it looks like over the san jose, but we cannot rule out the possibility of straight lightning strike through the morning. the possibility is there to the first half of the day. if you're wondering how we do with the rain, about 5/100th of an inch in richmond. some a few hours ago. under cloudy skies mid-70s and as we look across the 7-day forecast, today is the most exciting day with leftover clouds on sunday with a warm up starting by the middle of next week. it does not look like it will be is hot as the end of last week but still owe 90s for the daytime highs by wednesday. i will have more on this coming up in the next half-hour.

6:26 am
you from the white house briefing room. for a brief time this evening the white house went into lockdown mode as things evolve very quickly. we were at our life position outside when we heard chanting and yelling. we heard people saying things like the name of george floyd, i cannot breathe and even anti- trump slogans. those were the types of things we were hearing. there were some clashes between the protesters and the police but for the most part these demonstrations outside of the white house appeared to be peaceful. earlier in the day president trump said he supported the peaceful protest but did not want the situation to descend into lawless anarchy and chaos. nikole killion, cbs news the white house. we are checking out some of the damage that is left behind by the last night violent protests around the bay area. you can see some of this behind me. we will have a live report and talk more about the lease response coming up next.
6:27 am
the suv plowed into a crowd in san jose hitting two people in the middle of the last night demonstrations. here's a live look outside at san jose. we will be back in a moment.
6:28 am
6:29 am
live from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix 5 news. welcome back. it is about 6:30, and thank you
6:30 am
so much for joining us. i am devin fehely. protest went deep into the night in oakland and san jose. let's get to anne makovec from oakland with the destruction that was left behind. >> reporter: i am just across the street from the city hall you can see the walgreens with a ton of damage done. the windows are broken and they have not even begun the process of cleaning it up. you can see the flashing emergency lights are still going off inside of the store. the boards that they used to try to protect the store did nothing against protesters that were bent on destruction last night. at 14th and broadway across the street you can see the chase bank that was also destroyed by the protesters. there were able to run in, and they could do some damage. the same situation at the bus stop. there are several in the area of downtown oakland that solve
6:31 am
the same fate last night. the cleanup is going to be an immense project for the city of oakland, and for all of these individual business owners. let me show you a look at the damage in progress last night, and that is after the protest really evolved into a sort of riot with a faction of the demonstrators that started around 7:00 p.m. and hours later it got increasingly violent and became sort of a free-for-all. the police, for the most part, step back because they did not want to have confrontation with people out here. some had weapons, and others took whatever they could find and started smashing things, and of course we had looting. several small businesses, cafc and banks were hit last night. it's difficult to see the actual amount of damage because it is so widespread through many city blocks and many along broadway and including at target
6:32 am
store and car dealership. most of the roadways are open right now. people as they start to wake up with the sun coming up, coming out to see the damage that was left behind. it really is a difficult scene to behold at this point. i am alive at broadway and 14th, and you can see the aftermath of one he small fires that was set. this dumpster was set on fire. as we get closer i can see a bicycle left behind, and what appears to be a motorcycle that was also set on fire. it is an absolute mess here in oakland. san jose also saw a lot of destruction as well. again, the difficulty for the place is are you going to confront the people and get yourself into a dangerous situation, or just see what happens. we saw what happens and that is
6:33 am
what we are looking at this morning. we will continue to keep an eye on the damage left behind. anne makovec live in oakland from kpix 5. >> it's clear that the cleanup has not begun yet and is anything preventing more people from going inside of those businesses other than the daylight? >> reporter: no, there's really not. we don't see a police presence around here this morning either which surprised me a little bit. my photographer is able the turnaround where you can see the crews that are boarding up some of the small businesses at the oakland city center. there is an attempt that has begun, but again, it is before 7:00 a.m. with the sun just coming up. now business owners are left with this. this is business owners already hit very hard with covid-19, with the loss of business, and now something like this, and it really is a tragedy for a lot of them. >> reporter: thank you so much,
6:34 am
anne makovec, and did score a point and we want to let you know those businesses had nothing to do with the protest. there were 60 alleged looters detained for further investigation. oakland officers made 18 arrest with other law enforcement agencies making four. six oakland officers were hurt during the night with seven other officers from other agencies that were injured. here's what the interim police chief had to say this morning. >> we have had demonstrations last night that started out peacefully. we stood with our community here in the city of oakland to provide safe spaces, and respectful spaces for our demonstrators. what we saw later on in the evening turned violent and disruptive. we want to call on everyone that would come to oakland and stand with us, to respect the
6:35 am
memory of george floyd he, and the community, to ensure they are peaceful and respectful of the city of oakland, and especially the downtown businesses. they have been suffering since the pandemic began. we are thankful for the mutual aid and other agency partners that have helped us tonight. but as we have seen across the country, we saw damage and destruction here in our city. we will be back at it tomorrow. we stand with our community. we want to ensure that everyone that comes to the city of oakland is peaceful and respectful. thank you. this morning the oakland police are investigating a shooting of two security guards. we have just learned one died. this happened near the federal courthouse, less than one mile from the police headquarters where protesters gathered last night. but so far the police believe that shooting is not connected to those demonstrations.
6:36 am
in the south bay a protest in san jose took a tragic turn after and as you be allowed into a crowd and ran over two people near the city hall. that sent the large crowd scrambling and kpix 5 maria medina was among that group that ran for their lives. >> reporter: were standing by for live shot and were among the crowd, link bar safety, after the white suv ran over two people. the incident was caught on several cell phone cameras and it is too graphic to show. >> they ran over two people in us all a wheel go over person and it was actually awful to watch. >> reporter: this officer washing unfolded said the female driver turned onto santa clara past the protesters that were yelling and throwing water bottles at the suv. the suv medic u-turn and drove forward toward the crowd before the driver stepped on the gas, reversing and run over two people.
6:37 am
the driver made a last u-turn he took off. the officers that were holding the line rain to help the victims. >> no regard for human life at all. >> reporter: the move quickly shifted for anger for the protesters calling for the police to catch the driver, and sadness for the victims. marie medina, kpix 5. the santa clara county sheriff's office confirmed they were involved in a shooting at that same intersection at the same time as the hit-and-run incident but not say whether the two stents were connected. protesters blocked highway 101, and then things took a turn. >> protesters were seen smashing the windows of the police cars and other vehicles. >> i demand that you immediately disperse. >> the protest then moved into
6:38 am
the city streets and declared an unlawful assembly, and the crowd was ordered to disperse as the police line advanced on the protesters, down santa clara street toward city hall with officers firing the teargas into the corral. >> a dumpster was set on fire in a parked vehicle badly damaged and protesters move the vehicle in the middle of the street to use as a barricade but the police quickly moved on the position to make sure that the activists were not trying to set the car on fire. in minneapolis where the fired minneapolis police officer is seen on the video kneeling on the neck of george floyd, cards with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter after derek chauvin kneeled on the neck up lloyd for over 8 minutes. a new video shows at least two other officers kneeling on him as well. prosecutors said they expect to file more charges. the days of protest have
6:39 am
been followed by nights of mayhem in the twin cities and in minneapolis protesters defied the curfew and gathered outside of the police precinct, marching onto the freeway. the national guard was in place overnight and things were calmer than the previous three nights. the large-scale protests have erupted in over 30 cities across the country in the aftermath of the killing of george floyd, some taking a dangerous turn. in portland the peaceful vigil turned into chaos, and the violence escalated in the streets with the portland police declaring the scene a wright write, and the situation turned dyer as the demonstrators smashed the windows and looted the justice center. two protesters were arrested. in new york the arrest grew in brooklyn with thousand the protesters surrounding the barclays center and seen
6:40 am
throwing bottles and debris at the officers and the police officers responded with teargas and mason the abandoned police van was set on fire and by midnight several officers were injured with dozens of protesters taken into custody. in dallas protesters gathered outside of the city police headquarters in the police fool, full of protest and after 9:30 p.m. the protest got rowdy with hundreds through the streets throwing rocks at police cars and officers. the officers responded with teargas in an effort to disperse the crowds. in dallas the police officer found herself in a hail of bricks as the protest raged on. police officers initially went to the protest site to ensure it was still peaceful but were met with angry and unruly demonstrators. when the police deployed the teargas the bricks began falling around the officers hitting the squad cars in the officers. the atlanta protest got out of

you can see the walgreen windows smashed. they boarded it up previously due to covid-19 and concern about looting at that point. that was no match for the demonstrators. you can see where this door was pried open with some of the mess that was left inside of the store. what is stunning this morning is that there is no real security presence around this area. the problem, in part, is that there is such massive damage done throughout the city, particularly downtown along broadway. from here at 14th where i am near city hall all the way up to about 30 is street, and that is where we have seen the major damage done last night. let's take a look at the video of the demonstrations in progress. i hesitate to call the mall demonstrations because it all started peacefully around 7:00 last night. after a few hours there was a group in this larger group that seemed determined to turn this
6:45 am
into a riot, and to start doing damage. they were lighting fires all over the place, broke into the car dealership lighting fires, and breaking into the target. the looting, it's hard to quantify it at this point. it seemed like a free-for-all. there were some officers in some of the locations but most were just stepping back trying to avoid confrontation with the protesters. a lot of the protesters were armed with whatever they could find to work on their looting, and also to arm themselves against the police. several police officers were injured by objects being thrown at them. they did detain 60 looters. they made about 18 arrests. obviously dozens of people got away with it last night, and this is the mess that the local businesses have left to clean up this morning. anne makovec live from oakland, and back to you. kpix 5 da lin was there
6:46 am
when the protest began and he was there as the peaceful protesters became an angry mob overnight. things settle down he took a tour of the damage that was left behind. >> reporter: you're looking at the inside of the chase bank right now. someone tried to set a fire in here and the sprinkler system is working. this guy trying to break what is left of this class right here. let's step away. there are still some people trying to cause more destruction for chase bank. this started about an hour or an hour and 15 minutes ago around 10:00. let me show you over here, and this is what the construction crews actually put down later today. this is plywood and they had boarded it up to protect the windows, but the protesters ripped off the plywood and began to use it to break the
6:47 am
glass. a lot of them went inside causing more destruction inside, and of course they set a fire. that is what is happening right now with the sprinkler system working to put out the fire. let's keep walking down here little bit more. you can see more broken windows, and look at this bus shelter. there's more damage on this side of the chase bank. let's start with this bus shelter in the glass, and you can see on this side of the chase bank. it is more destruction and damage. all of these windows were basically broken. >> that was da lin reporting on a busy and unsettling night of protest. we also have unsettled weather so let's get into the weather center with darren peck. >> this is going on across the bay area region and we have not
6:48 am
focused so much what's going on in the sky. you may have noticed lightning in the skies and here's the hi- def doppler showing plenty of lightning in the bay area up until three hours ago. hears from the sales force looking south with scattered showers and rain moving out toward the peninsula. let's get back to the hi-def doppler showing us the action and let's get to the last hour and slow it down where you can see the last wave of lightning exiting the north bay. let's get back to the showers we were just looking at over the peninsula and the south bay. this is now light rain falling through san mateo working up to 80, 101 in hillsboro, south san francisco. this is all way up to daly city but light stuff after it gets into the city. this is not what we were seeing coming through around 3:00 this morning which was lighting up the sky with distant rumbles of thunder in the distance. that is quieted down for now.
6:49 am
but as we look at the last few hours on the big picture, look at the action north of the bay area. there is a lot of lightning and intense thunderstorms that we just missed. it is moving through the central valley working to the north, the northern edge of mendocino county. let's come back and play this forward for the rest of the day. keep in mind that the most exciting aspect of this is over. it came through last night. but we still have a possibility of a few isolated showers to pull through, and we will watch that. here's an example at 9:00 a.m. in sonoma county with the scattered showers, and even into the south bay early afternoon. there is a possibility some of this could come in the form of isolated thunderstorms, but that is a low chance, and the majority has already passed through. keep in mind you could hear rumble of thunder in the distance today, but in terms of rain, not a lot left to this. here is rainfall totals coming our way for the rest of the day
6:50 am
which is barely enough to measure. this is in the north bay, and maybe a little bit in the east bay. this is a significant rainmaker for this time of the year for far northern california at crescent city. back home it looks like plenty of clouds, and that is what it looks like for the rest of the day. we will keep the clouds around and only picking up a little bit of rain. on the daytime highs back in the low 70s today with much more comfortable numbers than what we were used to much of last week. if you're wondering about right now, low to mid 60s. for the next seven days we have a warm up coming our way and by the time we get into the middle of next week, we have one more day of low 90s but this is the last chance for rain. with four days of relatively mild weather before the heat up. >> yes, but thankfully not as
6:51 am
bad as what we remember by last week but a noticeable warm up by about wednesday. coming up, a look at the protest around california over the death of george floyd in
6:52 am
demonstrators clashed with police in several big cities across the state. in sacramento hundred the police marched to the police station. >> the protesters were marching for several hours and were chanting, hands up, don't shoot, and george floyd can't

breathe. in los angeles there is a shelter-in-place order after protesters turned violent and property was damaged with at least one officer that was sent to the hospital. several people were arrested downtown and at one point demonstrators blocked part of the freeway at the lapd headquarters. overall we were told that the protest were mostly peaceful but that police will keep an eye overnight. in washington dc the scene no different with crowds of hundreds making their way to the white house and what was initially a peaceful protest. the protest turned violent after secret service member tackled a protester to the ground prompting a lockdown in the white house. protesters chanting i can't breathe and contented to march toward the trump hotel. the president was tweeting the phrase for the secret service agents that help back the crowd,
6:54 am
tweeting out that the professionally managed protesters at the white house had little to do with the memory of george floyd and just there to cause trouble. the secret service handed them easily. tonight i understand and it is megan knight at the white house. president trump said he spoke with the family of george floyd and expressed his condolences. i'm anne makovec live in oakland where we wil

i am anne makovec live in oakland. you can see the damage left behind by the last night violent protests here. this is just a small picture of it. the scene is being replayed throughout the downtown area. this is for about a dozen blocks and here's the walgreens across from city hall. you can see the window was smashed. part of this was boarded up but that was no match for the protesters that really wanted to get in here. you can see this huge pile of glass, an absolute mess to worry about this morning. across the street at 14th and broadway you can see the chase bank was broken into and looted. over here a bus stop was also demolished. many saw the same fate last night. let me show you this video when things were really popping off around midnight. you can see the fires that were being lit, and once people made entry into some of these stores,
6:57 am
they were breaking in and grabbing whatever they could. looting was a real problem last night. also, again, the fires that were lit back here. you can see the aftermath of one of them which was a dumpster fire lit on 14th street. the street is still open and people are driving past, but this is a picture of how much damage was done. there is not a way to get a handle on this at this point, to start to get things cleaned up and safe. it is not even been assessed yet. i've seen a couple of city inspectors driving past and taking pictures with their phone but this is a long process. in oakland, live, anne makovec, kpix 5. in the middle of the protest in san jose a white suv ran into a crowd of demonstrators and ran over two people. witnesses said the driver made a u-turn, drove toward the
