live from the bay area studios, this is kpix 5 news. firefighter crews had their handfuls as illegal fourth of july fireworks lit up the sky across the bay area sparking several fires. >> celebratory fires came dangerously close to an oakland teen when a stray bullet flies through her bedroom ceiling. business is getting the okay to open in santa clarita county are being excited, the mixed messages as the county reopening plan gets put on

hold. it is sunday july 5th, good morning i'm ken feeley, emily turner has the morning off. happy fifth of july devon, you know sometimes there is smoke in the air from pollution the sunset can take on a real pretty glow. worsening that with sunrise right now, because so much smoke in the air, from all the illegal fireworks last night, not only are there air-quality issues but look at the views from salesforce east, you're getting the interesting color, the haze near the east bay and on the other side of the sky, there is the moon. and we've got a full moon right now, that's going to set at 6:13, beautiful view in the sky right now you can see the haze looking out over the city, this is the view of san francisco from trevor island, that direction without anything else to light up the sky you really see the haze, i will talk to you more about air-quality,

there are places it's not healthy to be bringing in that air, as far as the temperatures go 50 degrees in santa rosa right now, it 65 in concord, there is the 15 degrees spread always going to be cooler to start up the morning and those isolated valleys, as far as what you expect for the rest of today, remember yesterday? it was hot inland, it was beautiful at the coast, or doing an exact repeat today, everybody gets about a two or 3 degrees drop, so technically there is a subtle cooldown that begins today, but you're not going to notice that yet, that starts to happen tomorrow, i've got some good news if you want to cooldown with the inland temperatures, i will be back with the and the complete forecast in a few minutes. it was the soundtrack of the fourth of july across the bay area last night. >> this was the fireworks

dsplay from bernal heights in san francisco, here is more video of fireworks from above san francisco and the east bay, the official firework show was canceled this year because of the pandemic, all of these are illegal. san francisco firefighters were busy with a grass fire in the bayview, crews say most illegal fireworks sparked fires, on the roof of a structure in the same area, no word on any injuries from those fires. kpix 5 reports across the bay in oakland of firework hotspot that have fire crews on high alert. is people started lighting up illegal fireworks, not only in oakland, but also all across the bay. >> the bay area keeps their own fires going. >> firefighters continue their fight including this one in brentwood, within a 60 minute span at one point in eight they

and pentecost the county, a 10 acre brush fire erupted on concord hills, no building were threatened or damaged but it put up a large cloud of smoke, that was visible for several miles. this morning firefighters remain on the scene of 100 acre fire burning on the acres of sonoma, it was contained last night, but crews from california fire and alameda county are in a block of face. the fire is in threatening buildings but people visiting nearby parks were told to leave. >> how much smaller burning about an acre near santa rosa was quickly brought under control, no word on what sparked these various fires. and oakland families feeling shaken after they found a stray bullet in their home, apparently from celebratory but gunfire, kpix five spoke to a family in the neighborhood. >> it is not unusual for them to hear gunfire and illegal fireworks on a daily basis. but, this time it came dangerously close. >> i was asleep here, and i

woke up and i was sitting and i looked on and i was like there is a whole in the ceiling. >> she found pieces of the ceiling on her bedroom floor. when her mother found this bullet, just outside the door, the family realized what had happened. >> it is kind of scary to think about because i could have been dead, if it came from a different angle, i don't know. >> when the bullet flew through her ceiling the night before she thought it was the sound of an air pod falling to the ground. >> i'm very furious actually, number one because this is a very irresponsible act, because your celebration could have been somebody else's funeral. >> since the discovery she hasn't been sleeping in her bedroom, she's got used to the sound of gunfire. >> it is normal at this point i guess, it doesn't make you feel that safe. >> fireworks have been going off for months now, since the pandemic they started. and it's only going to get worse as this evening goes.

>> this is the fourth bullet the family has found in and around their home in the last year, another stray bullet is still lodged in their roof. >> we have additional staffing, additional resources west oakland to east oakland, one of the things we are focusing on is the celebratory gunfire, it's extremely dangerous, we know that we have had injury even death in the past. >> the oakland police department is relying on surveillance camera and gunshot detection technology called schultz park. >> that to technology is an alert to the dispatch center but the officers, it comes across the computer, oakland fire is also a warning against large gatherings and drivers blocking space for emergency responders. >> we are very concerned that any firework activity, or any brushfire that started from the barbecue or a power tool, could start a fire. a warning for the public

this morning contra costa county deputies are looking for a murder suspect, angela ramirez is accused of shooting another man on april 4th. ramirez may have left the area, they consider him armed and dangerous. an abrupt turn of events for businesses, eager to reopen their doors in santa clara county, the state has rejected the county's request from last thursday to ease lockdown restrictions. if a so-called variance had been approved the county would've issued reopening of business like nail salons and gems, but now a county order to ease restrictions will not go into effect. local officials say they are confused by the states rejection since it is granted leeway to most other counties that have applied for. >> meanwhile in morgan hill a few restaurants got a surprise visit from the department of alcohol and beverage control. agents advise those businesses to close. the lyndale grill, which did not

, i'm sorry did have a patio open was one of them. the security photo from inside the restaurant shows a uniform agent, santa clarita county has been allowing outdoor dining for the past month, the manager said the agents told him the state never approved their county for outdoor dining, and the business was technically in violation. >> certainly the customers last night were very worried, about what was going on, they see two armed officers walk into the restaurant and are good questions, of course i have to answer them, but i was just as confused as them, in the middle of our rush, to be basically strong-armed into saying you have to shut down tomorrow or everybody is getting fines, there is a big issue with that, and mostly the confusion. >> in a statement avis did not issue any citations or notice of violations but find a

several businesses, except as a takeout operation. morgan hill leaders said they were left in the dark is 200 state inspectors fanned out across to check businesses for social distancing compliance, governor gavin newsom is going to lose funds if they don't enforce these over the weekend. another inmate has died of complications from the coronavirus, duane michael kerry has been on death row since 1996 for first-degree murder, he died saturday announcing three other death row inmates at santaquin to have died from suspected coronavirus complication since june 24th. in all about 1300 prisoners and 120 staff members have contracted the virus. most of them within the past two weeks. the outbreak is believed to have started after a transfer of prisoners from southern california correctional facility, overrun by the illness. marin county has been added to the governor's covid-19

watchlist, due to a number of factors including case counts, possible additions and containment strategies, counties have remained on the watchlist three days or more are required to close indoor activities, officials say if they remain on the watchlist indoor dining could be required to close as soon as today. a message for the county this holiday season. they rely on tourism during the summer but officials of city are turning people away due to an uptick in coronavirus cases. even with all the closure signs along the highway people try to make their way to the beach, they were turned away by city workers at the entrances, most of the visitors complied, and those who didn't were met on the shore by sheriff deputy in a vehicle. >> i thought if we parked far and walk it would be open, but it was not.

oakland sits underneath that, and oakland is one of the places that saw some of the bigger spikes in unhealthy air quality last night, in fact, look at the scale. this shows you the air quality readings and what they have been like for one sensor in the city of oakland going back to saturday afternoon at 2:00 and taking us through the afternoon when air quality was fine, anywhere you see a yellow bar there is no issues, sure enough once we get to the evening, there is a definite spike in poor air quality. for this one hour, about 11:00 last night we see the purple bar, that is where it is just hazardous levels to be breathing the stuff. >> even though we have come back down, that still considered unhealthy, not unhealthy for sensitive groups, unhealthy. period. >> probably not the best morning to go out for a jog you don't want to be breathing the stuff deeply. once we start to bree sison version the air quality will improve but it is going to be the morning, where we are really dealing with the leftover stuff, you could still see the haze certainly see it

at the city skyline, not the prettiest start to this day, with all of this leftover stuff in the air, san jose, you've got it to. if it's not as thick as it is in oakland, but you still got it down there, temperatures it is 59 in san jose, 65 in concord, as far as some hies are concerned, were going to be doing pretty much an exact repeat of what we dated yesterday, let me show you what the numbers are going to look like across the bay area as a whole, were starting out here in the south bay with numbers in the mid-80s were working towards the east bay, were still going to seem mid to low 90s today, a very familiar feel, it's going to be just as hot in lynn today as we were yesterday, and it's still going to be a little bit cooler in the bay, we had 80 in oakland, we will go to 75 today, san francisco is 68, santa rosa is still going to 89, you can see the numbers in the upper 80s,

and in terms of what you expect over the next seven days a cool down, it's going to start tomorrow, once we get into the early part of this week daytime highs will come into the mid- 80s for inland spots, we will keep in the low to mid 70s for much of the bay, that is the seven-day forecast notice the end of it were going to spike again next weekend back up into the mid-90s again for daytime highs on saturday. so, it's going to be hot again next weekend. >> the unusual fourth of july most of the fireworks were canceled, but one thing that was not, the hot dog eating contest we have every year. the next story is not even pandemic can stop nathan's hot dog contest, coley island to new york on saturday, for the third team try at the title, the contest really was no contest. >> some things change, some things remain the same. >> all right, kind of

of the monument in the italy neighborhood of baltimore, they cheered as the statue was thrown into the harbor, the demonstration comes on a nationwide call to remove confederate monuments and statues of other historical figures were linked to racism and oppression. statues of columbus have come down amid recent protest. >> attack on protesters in seattle has left one woman dead and another severely injured, early saturday just after midnight people were protesting on highways in seattle when this vehicle began speeding directly toward the crowd. some people were able to run out of the way and avoid it but two women were hit, a 24-year- old woman died, a second victim a 32-year-old woman remains in serious condition. a 27-year-old suspect was arrested at the scene.

protesters also happening in minneapolis over the death of george floyd and breonna taylor. demonstrators moved through downtown minneapolis to call for justice, they did so silently as opposed to most rallies that were chanting rapidly, they raise their arms in solidarity, and kneeled in floyd's memory. in chicago protesters rallied in downtown to honor one of the earliest settlers a black man who was the city's first settler, there was a hero banner saying "black heroes matter". protesters say the settlor was if he wasn't a black man he would have been notably honored in chicago. a 400 foot long message across a san jose strip, the activist who painted it on saturday said they chose that particular street for a reason. over 60 volunteers painted black lives matter's on the street, the message dressed up for three city blocks, in the neighborhood. this is definitely something

for sam accardo to see, a resident of this neighborhood, we've been sitting through days of city council meetings, people calling in and spending hours asking for change and it hasn't happened yet. this is to let everyone know, we are not losing speed. this is a movement, it's huge, people are willing to spend their times and it's not going to stop. the activists say that the message was about unity and solidarity and the call for change in policy in their community. in other news, the city of berkeley is offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to the gunman in a mysterious killing of a cal student. family members of 19-year-old seth smith came together to remember him in his home town on friday night, he was about to start his third year where he was double majoring in history and economics. >> late on the ninth of june 15th he was found shot and killed near white way in valley

the group acknowledges the need for food was high, people have been lining up for the event two hours before it started. president trump signed a bill saturday that extends the deadline for businesses to apply for a loan under the federal protection program. nearly 5 million small businesses have applied for $502 billion in assistance, 502 billion dollars since the loans are forgivable if a business uses part of the money to keep employees on its payroll. there is still money left about $130 million, businesses have until august 8th to apply. what would one do with the parking lots now that 203 sports teams are gone, i will have that story coming up. surgical green

that is still blanketing parts of the bay area, is typical for us to see his out there thanks to the inversion layer, usually what we see is an influx in moisture, but we have completely locked the marine layer, in terms of clouds and all of that, that turned off yesterday, a lot we are seeing here, there is some humidity, a lot of it is leftovers smoke from the fireworks, you can see it looking east, you can see it from treasure island looking back at the city, it does look cheesy out there, and the air- quality centers across the bay area particularly in the bay are still reading unhealthy levels of smoke. it will get better by the time we get to late morning, inversion layer always breaking up a bit by the time we get in, when that happens today it will allow whatever smoke is still here to clear out, but if you go on a regular basis, this morning my not be a good day to do that, put it off to the

afternoon or wait until tomorrow, i think your lungs will be grateful for that. let's talk about when the marine layer is coming back, it will by the time we get into tomorrow, we see a little bit by the coast, by the time we get into tuesday it's right there, we are getting back into more of our typical early pattern, where were going to turn the flow back on and we will bring in the low grade clouds for the morning we certainly don't have any of it out there today, it was nice to not have to worry about low clouds for the wind, or going to see an uptick as well, watch the surge, when we get to the early evening, where's seeing gus, that's a good sign the streamline here, tells us the flow turns back on a bigger way today, we get to cool back down inland, after this happens. we have until the afternoon today, tomorrow's numbers are going to be cooler, we get you out of the low 90s in the seven- day, one of the things to keep in mind there are still concerns at the beach today, there is a warning in effect

until 8:00, potential for riptide, sneaker waves, be aware of you have plans to be near the water today, daytime highs go to the mid-80s down in the south today, 85 in san jose there are mid-90s glenwood is at 75, santa rosa goes up to 89 those numbers are a few degrees cooler than yesterday but i doubt enough so that you will notice, here is what you will notice, the seven-day forecast on monday, after midnight is today, it is only mid-sadie mid- 80s tomorrow. we will start to bring back our beloved fog and marine layer clouds, the stuff that comes over by monday, it's that time of year for that, it will look a bit more normal, we got rid of it completely.

is 6:55 a time for a look at this morning's top stories, even though most of the firework shows were canceled because of the pandemic, people still found a way to set off fireworks across the bay area, legal displays could be seen across the bay, firefighters say several grass fires were burning in the park in the bayview district, before firefighters were able to knock it down. one oakland family is shaken up this morning they found a stray bullet in their home, it came right through the roof, and it appears it was from celebratory gunfire, the police say this is actually the fourth bullet they have found near their home in the last year. the state of california has rejected county's request to ease lockdown restrictions, that is after the county requested a variance on y ursday, local officials they are confused by the states rejection sent it has been granted leeway to other
