the wildfires continue to expand across the bay area with the level of destruction growing. some firefighting crews are facing added danger with residents that are refusing to move. >> if you're in the area and don't need to be there, please leave. >> tens of thousands of homes in danger in the north bay with one fire in particular posing the biggest threat. the fires in the area creating other setbacks for struggling bay area business. it is 6:00 on this saturday, august 22nd. good morning. i am emily turner. >> i am devin fehely and let's get to our meteorologist darren peck. >> we have smoke and hazy skies . the colors are pretty but weki unhealthy air

quality bay area wide. the te prettwarm for this time of the day. typical 57 in san francisco with marine layer along the coast. we have to shift the focus from talking about temperatures as we zero in on the air-quality. look at all the orange and red dots on your screen right now. that tells you it is unhealthy for sensitive groups, and flat- out unhealthy for everybody. if you could limit your time outside today that's a good idea. as far as temperatures, mid-80s at the bay and low 80s inland, a few degrees above average mo sunday night into monday morning. we have much more on that coming up. the firefighters andbattlin scorching over a half million

wildfires burning across the area. we begin with the santa cruz mountains. >> reporter: we watched the smoke go from gray to cole black with the fired destroying more structures, getting closer to boulder creek where i'm standing. we have watch them all day trying to stop the flames from nothing , buit's czu august lightning complex fire ripping through the mountains, begging residents refusing to evacuate to leave a look >> is difficult to maneuver around these narrow roads and to add the public is very difficult and very unsafe for firefighters. >> reporter: you decided to come back? >> we have to protect our property. >> we heard cal fire was understaffed.

cal fire said that depending on e fire behavior that more people could be forced from their homes. from boulder creek, maria medina, kpix 5. >> the complex fire covering 50,000 acres and only 2% contained. evacuation orders in effect in napa county and sonoma county were 12,000 people were ordered to evacuate. the walbridge fire and hennessey fire threatening over 30,000 homes and buildings which is part of the la new lightning complex. ú>> reporter: this is one of several homes that went up in flames with the fire ripping through the area. tonight firefighters are working tirelessly to put out

the flames before the wind she is and potentially it moves in the direction of the town of delta burke. >> reporter: here is a look at the devastation withetal all that is left with the blaze burning several homes in his path. those that evacuated are hoping this is not what they returned to. >> that is the tough part is that you don't know what is going on. >> reporter: mike rogers home of his parents is right in the middle of the blaze and they are wondering if it is still standing. the crews have been working around the clock trying to knoc remote areas west of the town of healdsburg. the shift of 24 hours on and 24 hours off does not apply to these firefighters. >> these firefighters working

72 hours straight. >> reporter: firefighters are desperately trying to contain the fire with wind out of the south this weekend meaning the town would be in danger. >> the concern of ours is that after the wihes it will challenge that side of the fire which is why that effort is going in up there. >> they want to be ready for the potential threat and those in the city are under an evacuation morning. >> we will be all right, surviving go again. >> reporter: we have not seen the smoke rising into the skies like the last few days but firefighters say do not be deceived. there are many hot spots burning throughout this entire area. in healdsburg, maria medina, kpix 5. >> the fires have killed are be at highway 128. we spoke with one man that lives nearby. >> what i met of the family

they seemed like good people. my condolences to the family. this is a tragedy. the largest group of fires is located in the hills east of firendome are questioning it 20 he evacuation orders were too large spread. >> we have about half the neighbors that stayed in half left. >> citizens are the most important thing to us and we have to change from the firefight to evacuating residents from their houses. >> cal fire reports it over 1100 personnel have been deployed toattle thre. that is woodward fire growing with the

ventilation to comply with the health department order. then comes the fires, and unheallevels othe air pollution. >> with the wildfire, smoking deer and ashes flowing around, many people are hesitant to come out to dine. >> reporter: the general manager said after the domes made headlines two weeks ago the restaurant was fully booked through september but now they see some cancellations. some restaurant in the bay area chose to close entirely due to poor air quality. maven posted on instagram that they would close on wednesday, but reopening tonight. the health department is not made any official moves to shut down outdoor dining but said this week that the pollution is so severe that everyone may start to experience health effects despite the smoke pollution, tonight there was a sizable turnout in the mission. >> yesterday sales were half

down and the day before was even more scary, brown, hazy and looks like the apocalypse. >> reporter: tonight air quality in the mission has improved since the fire first erupted >> the mayor, governor, and what are the city mandates? we have to decide when is unhealthy for our staff and ourselves. >> we will keep watching. the point of this is to safely give small businesses a fighting chance to survive. if air quality is too dangerous, we have to make a game change transition but so far that's okay. >> that was betty yu reporting. we go live to scotts valley where cal fire is giving a press conference on the czu fire. >> it is a long line from the fi engine we are vigilant working with local fire agencies that are keeping their

eyes open in areas where we don't have a lot of resources. they are helping us out by jumping on those and we can send in resources to assist and knock that out. we did have more structure loss last night but that will happen unfortunately until the resources get a better handle on the control lines. it has been reduced greatly from this last week. this is a big win for us yesterday. it was a fantastic drop with folks putting a good control line, the firebreak and the contingency line in the south fire. that cuts off the link between highway 1 and highway 9. the firebreak is just above the campus, community of santa cruz. it is not bulletproof or silver bullet strong hold andontrol point in which southward into the communities. we will continue to monitor that and staff that. we will use of various tactics to provide even greater

protection. where putting in a secondary firebreak. >> you were listening live to the cal fire press conference about the czu august lightning complex fire. for quick recap there was structure loss overnight but got a big win yesterday for putting a firebreak in the south part of the far between highway 1 and 9. that's a stronghold to keep it from moving in places like l capitola . in other news a dramatic moment with the golden state killer crime spree, the most ruthless in the state of california. joseph deangelo was sentenced to life in prison and our reporter asked if that apology was sincere, asking his attorney.

>> in all of your statements, each one of them, and i am truly sorry to everyone i have hurt. >> reporter: it is a shock to the victims of the east area rapist, joseph deangelo apologizing and he spoke to her room of the families that he hurt while thinking of his own. >> he has three dollars and a granddaughter. >> reporter: after the weeklong sentencing phase the notorious killer was forced the pace, to face the people whose lives he heinously ruined. >> my life is changed forever. >> he had difficulty making eye contact with the victims. >> reporter: do you think he feels remorse at all? >> he has expressed that to us many times and i know that will

be difficult if not impossible for a lot of the people to believe. that does not mean he does not deserve to spend the rest of his life in prison. >> under normal circumstances joseph deangelo would be transferred from the sacramento jail to state prison but more likely to stay in county jail for now due to the pandemic . coming up, an update on horses that managed to survive the flames in the santa cruz mountains, and how the owners found them again. taking the risky step of trying to slow down the advance of the wildfire.

we have an update on a remarkable story emerging from the ashes of the czu august lightning complex fire in nta cruz. onhrorseat escaped despite the fires around them. he spotted them friday morning and gave them water. the ranch manager is expressing gratitude and relief. >> it is amazing they were not burned >> i'm so glad they were alive and that we got them out. thank you guys so much >> a manager rescued the horses after seeing our video.

we needed some positive news. unfortunately not a lot of positive news in the weather. >> we could use about 10 more of the stories right now, emily. the air is just as bad right now as when you went to bed last night without much improvement. looking at the scene from the top of the salesforce tower, normally debut would be the marine layer but everything you see is smoke. it is locking your view of the entire east bay. you can only see two about treasure island. that's it with all the smoke lingering. this is probably the top concern as you step outside today in terms of what the weather will be. for what is going on in the atmosphere the smoke will be here. we have cooled away from the heatwave and hopefully you have noticed that. temperatures in the mid to upper 60s across the bay area. the air quality sensors show was

orange or red. neither is good but red is flat- out unhealthy for everybody. the orange is unhealthy for the thngn yoe groups. una eak over several dayt unhethy. ifou can smell smoke outside, it's a good idea to skip your morning jog today. why breed more of this in no in- 80s in the souh bay. 83 at san mateo, 82 in fremont with 85 in san jose. it will be hazy all day. the pattern responsible for keeping temperature's warmer than average is the same pattern that will not let the air stir a lot. near the coast we might get periods of actual good air quality if you are right in the city or along the coast line today. we have seen that happened the last two days but that's the only places getting it. everybody else is bringing in the same area ai

novato a ro as well and topping out in upper 90s in the far north bay. looking ahead to the weekend, the mass of clouds spinning off the coast of southern california, the forecast looking a little more likely. as we get into sunday night into monday morning we have another round of isolated thunderstorms heading into the bay area. we will not track that very closely as it gets closer to the time frame. you cannot really get too speci when or where. the general idea for more isolated thunderstorms bay area wide is with the sunday night into monday. of course the concern is twofold. the first is the new fire starts , and in addition thunderstorms . they brings strong and gusting wind with them, and they don't bring a lot of rain. we get the strong outflow when strong wind that could be

layer but all smoke trapped. that is held over the bay area with all of that smoke coming off of the wildfires on all sides of the bay. it is trapped and kept here. currently 68 in concord, and that is relatively warm. we will see you back in the mid- 90s for your daytime highs today. san goodign that we at least have the onshore flow of a marine layer at the golden gate and along the coast. that says we get some marine influence but not enough. air-quality unhealthy across the board. pretty much bay area wide. the headline for today is that there are more buyer weather concerns sunday evening into monday morning, and possibility of more isolated thunderstoremy mid to upper's in the bay and mid 90s still inland.

lightning is the last thing we need but we start a half hour with the big fire at the santa cruz mountain that started by lightning. the latest numbers with flames at san mateo and santa cruz county burning 57,000 acres with 2% containment. 97 structures have been destroyed, and that count will likely go up. we just heard from cal fire early this morning that ill go u crtrying to locate two miing people. reat resources th resources. typically in an area that size we resources to combat the fire but we simply don't have it. >> to add to that a group of suspected looters crashed their car trying to get away from the police. and all five people have been arrested. that fire is called the czu august lightning complex fire .

the flames are burning through acres of the thick forest forcing the over streets crews to navigate the rugged terrain in a fight to save homes. kpix 5 kenny choi reports from that evacuation zone. >> reporter: they are expressin but with dozens of fires burning in the region firefighters are going from home. more than 1000 firefighters are battling the flames burning the destructive path for the santa cruz mountains. >> my house burned down two days ago. >> my concern is that the vlley i know when love will not be here the boulder creek became the hardest hit area overnight according to cal fire. >> t area. >> reporter: home after home burned to the ground with the official tally doubling overnight.

firefighters are doing what they can with the limited resources that they have. >> we have a hard time combating the fire so we are doing the greatest good by assuming the defensive role, and going house to house. >> reporter: cal fire anticipates the 50 structures destroyed will increase with over 24,000 structures threatened. derrick borden leaves his home is okay but not that of his coworker nearby. >> e house across the street from me is burned to the ground with cal fire fighters actually putting out the flames. >> reporter: from 28,000 to 64,000 today. based on observations over the last few days we s ewer an fewer peopleng bd. om be loman, kpix 5. the number of crews battling the fires has doubled with over 1000 firefighters working on the lnu lightning

complex fire. that covers forestville and lake sonoma. kpix 5 wilson walker reports near healdsburg. >> reporter: in sonoma county officials say the spread of the fire has slowed which is certainly welcoming news for the thousands of people that dg e been affected by the >> it feels eerie and scary, but this is something we are used to. this amount of ashes falling i >> reporter: if healdsburg needed a reminder on what was happening west of town it was falling from the skies this afternoon. >> it looks like somebody emptied the fireplace out on top of tables . it's crazy. >> reporter: today the nearest active fire near dry creek valley. >> there is a lot ohomes and a lot of property, vineyards and wineries, and jobs for

people. >> reporter: the grapes were due at this vineyard with the skeleton staff trying to protect the property and keep the gears of the winery running. >> this is the agriculture business and mother nature, it does not stop for the fire or pandemic. we have to keep growing grapes. >> i have been on the fire line for the last four days. >> reporter: lawrence left one side of the fire only to find the other side of the fire looming over his family home. he and his mother used a garden hose to stave the fire in 1972. at that time the fire stayed on. f bought that e generator and i'm not going to stand by and watch this place burn. i will do my best to keep it here. >> reporter: they have done their o dole the number

irrchi we have seen throughout the day. they hope that the marine layer will contribute again tonight to the slowing of the spread of the walbridge fire. wilson walker, kpix 5 if you are planning to head to the beach at half moon bay and pacifica, you need to cancel those. the cities shutdown the beaches through monday and or urging people to stay away to keep the roads clear for the emergency vehicles. napa county is no longer listed on the state covid-19 monitoring list making it the first bay area county to come off the list since being added in july. businesses are not allowed to open printer operations yet until the state gives them the go-ahead. california reporting over 5500 cases on friday with 135 more deaths. hospitalization 3rd down, falling 17% over the last two e area has dipped a little bit.

emily. the more we can impress that upon people, the better. if you smell the smoke you are already breathing in more particulate matters harmful to your your lungs. let's start off by showing you how things have changed a little bit for the better. here is to be of the golden gate bridge. while we have smoke in the view there is smoke in every camera i show you. these are the marine layer, the onshore flow working its way in at least to the bridge, and along the coast. it is an excellent sign or a stronger assurance we are getting more humidity in the air. now let's change the view to the south bay. none of that is the marine layer. all of that is smoke. the hazy covering view of the skyline, you cannot make out the santa cruz mountains in the background. as we look at another view, this from the top of the salesforce tower, the sunrise looks pretty and you get pretty colors when you put a lot of

stuff in the air like this. but those brighter colors should be your sign that the air ality is very unhealthy. 68 in concord, 61 in oakland with livermore at 63 and san francisco at 57. temperatures in the mid to upper 50s in the city. that arose at 58 right now. looking at the headlines, air quality forecast for today, sensors will change every hour. in general they are all either orange or red. when you e for the urse of it tel it a day for the air quality. cons in addition to the air quality, of course, that heat is a big story. that is not as uncomfortable factor at this point but still above average. we will be in e upper 80s in the south bay for the daytime highs, bid 90s inland. that's contra costa and inland alameda county. we are only 5 degrees above

average at most. we are not getting the extreme heat that we were getting. 70s for the spay with upper 90s topping out. looking at the coast to the south you can see that spinning mass of clouds, and that is why we have the fire weather watch starting tomorrow morning and will not expire until tuesday morning. we have a possibility, as difficult as it is to hear or believe, we could have another round of dry lightning coming t onday. broad brushing idetihave learn very difficult to nail down. we know that the ingredients are there and that the possibility is there that we could see more isolated lightning. that brings a new point of concern for new fire starting in gusting wind on the fires we already have.
