expected to visit kenosha, wisconsin. the latest city racked by protests over racial injustice following the police shooting of a black man. mr. trump's visit comes as he and his democratic opponent joe biden trade barbs over who was responsible for the violent demonstrations that continue to rock the city after jacob blake was shot by police last month. laura podesta is in new york. laura, the former vice president came out hard against the president on this very topic. >> reporter: he sure did. good morning. at a campaign stop in pittsburgh yesterday joe biden said the president is to blame for the escalating violence throughout the country. but he was very careful not to appear anti-law and order saying if he were to be elected president he would not defund the police. in fact, he would add about $300 million in federal funding to their local budgets. >> rioting is not protesting. looting is not protesting.

jacob blake. >> it could increase the love and respect for our country. and that's why i'm going because they did a fantastic job. >> reporter: wisconsin is a key battleground state that mr. trump nearly won in 2016. voters are torn on his visit. >> i want to feel like i feel more safe and i don't feel that way. >> he's just showing support. >> reporter: president trump is not expected to meet with blake's family. when asked about kyle rittenhouse the 17-year-old trump supporter who shot and killed two protesters last week president trump did not condemn his actions and said the matter is still under investigation. laura podesta in new york. thank you so much. a new poll finds that president trump got a bit of a bump following the republican national revenge. according to national poll by anderson college, joe biden has 49% support compared to mr.

trump's 47%. biden's lead is down from four points in la d in jul the new poll was taken after the two parties held their conventions. liberty university announced it has opened an independent investigation into jerry falwell jr.'s tenure as president. that includes financial, real estate and legal matters. falwell resigned last week from the christian school after admitting his wife had an affair with giancarlo granda, a pool attendant. falwell claims granda tried to blackmail him. granda denies that accusation. today voters in massachusetts will head to the polls in a closely watched democratic senate primary. senator ed markey the longest serving member of the congressional delegation faces a challenge from congressman joe kennedy.yete t campaign trail a final time.

>> i think it's very clear i ran on a progressive agenda and we're seeing results all across the state. tomorrow i'll work as hard as i can to bring it home. >> some recent polls have given markey an edge but kennedy has never lost a campaign for congress in massachusetts. now to the latest on the coronavirus. cases in the u.s. have topped 6 million. california has the most with more than 705,000 cases. that's according to johns hopkins. it's followed by texas and florida. also the u.s. accounts for 24% of cases across the globe. this comes as the fda confirmed it would consider emergency approval for a covid vaccine before clinical trials are completed. the decision has raised concerns that there's pressure to get a vaccine approved before the november election. dr. jon lapook asked dr. steven

hahn if politics are playing a role in vaccine development in our series of racing to a cure. >> a really good question. >> reporter: dr. steven hahn insists the agency is not losing its independence when it comes to making a vaccine against covid-19 available. >> the public is concerned about the politicalization of the process. president trump tweeted about a deep state at the fda. there are people in the medical community being critical of the whole process. >> i can tell you our decision at fda will not be made on any other criteria than the science and data associated with these clinical trials. >> reporter: dr. hahn says depending on that study a vaccine could be available by election day before a phase three trial is finished. >> have you felt pressure to make a decision? >> i have not been pressured politically to make an incorrect decision. >> how about pressure to make what you think is a correct decision? >> there's been pressure throughout this pandemic.

anybody who doesn't acknowledge that would be kidding themselves. >> reporter: some vaccine manufacturers have said they could start delivering vaccines by the end of the year. >> if you felt pressure to make a vaccine available before it's ready, what would do you? >> we will not make that decision on the basis of politics. that's a promise. >> would that promise go so far as to say if you're pressured to make a decision you don't agree with you would resign? >> all options are on the table in that respect. i hope we're not in that position. >> reporter: dr. hahn says the public should have confidence in agency guidance. even if some vaccine doses are made available in the fall, dr. gottlieb said a vaccine won't be ready until next year. dr. jon lapook, cbs news. >> athletes are paying tribute to legendary basketball coach john thompson. the man known simply as big john was the first black head coach

to win the ncaa championship with georgetown in 1984. he coached there for 27 years. pacing the hoya sideline with his familiar white towel. he was a fighter for racial justice on and off the court. and a fierce advocate for players. many called him a mentor and role model. in a tweet iverson wrote thanks for saving my life, coach. john thompson was 78 years old. investigation is under way after a navy plane went down in rural virginia. the two pilots and two crew members on board were able to safely bail out. the wreckage was reported in the community of bloxom, northeast of norfolk. it crashed during a training flight. coming up on the "cbs morning news," joe biden responds to a heckler while he delivers pizza to first responders. and a supermarket scare. a bear is caught on video doing a little picnic shopping.

it includes accusations that jeremy who is now 67 years old sexually assaulted a 15-year-old girl at a party in 2004. the new charges which include forcible rape dates to this year. jeremy's lawyer says that his client intends to plead not guilty to the new charges. "the houston chronicle" reports texas is suing to stop more than 2 million registered voters around the city from receiving mail in ballot applications. the state's republican attorney general filed a lawsuit to stop harris county from sending applications to all its registered voters even if they do not qualify to vote by mail. texas is one of the few states not allowing more people to mail ballots in november because of the pandemic. >> and bloomberg reports joe biden offer up a quip to a

here's a look at today's on the "cbs money watch" amazon clears a major hurdle for drone delivery and a state hit hard by the coronavirus marks a major milestone in its recovery. naomi ruchim is in new york with more on this. good morning, naomi. >> reporter: investors are hoping wall street will continue its rising momentum as we enter september. august ended with a three major indexes marking their best month in at least 20 years. but yesterday was mixed. the dow dropped to 223 points,

the nasdaq added 79 points, and the s&p 500 lost 7 points.leje c again dine indoors. governor phil murphy says starting friday at 6:00 a.m. indoor dining can resume at 25% capacity and with social distancing in place. murphy says masks will also be required except while eating and drinking. movie theaters and performance venues will also be able to re-open that day. zoom is raking in the dough as the pandemic keeps many people across the nation working from home. thousands of businesses are now paying for subscription to the video conferencing service to get more control over their virtual megs. that's meant a big boost for the company and zoom's revenue between the months of may to july more than quadrupled from the same time last year to nearly $664 million. pretty soon your next amazon

delivery may come from the sky. the federal aviation administration has now granted the company approval to use dones to deliver its packages. amazon said it is still testing and flying the devices and did not say when drones are expected to be used for deliveries. we'll have to see how that goes and making sure nobody steals your packages. how do they control that? >> you read my mind. as long as a drone doesn't drop it at my front door in clear view of the street, porch pilots have done well by me in this neighborhood. >> maybe you invest in one of those doorbell video things or whatever. >> i have that. they got me for everything. it's so good to know. all you see -- i know. all you see is shadowy figures. you can't figure anything out. maybe i should like maybe invest in a good relationship with a federal agent with my neighbors. naomi ruchim, thank you so much.
