experience for hundreds of campers who got trapped by an out-of-control fire in california. the creek fire has burned more than 73,000 acres since friday evening in the sierra national forest. the only road out of a popular recreation area threatening the lives of more than 200 people. military helicopters got there in time, taking everyone to safety. cbs news spoke to one man who says he barely escaped. >> we're all in the water and we just -- we keep going down into the water to protect us from the embers. some of the embers the size of golf balls. wind's blowing 40, 50, 60 mile-per-hour in some cases, some of the gusts. we keep going under and under and under. in my mind i'm going, are we going to die from the fire or from drowning? >> 20 people had injuries ranging from burns to broken bones. more coming up ahead on "cbs this morning." a gender reveal party is to

blame for a wildfire east of los angeles. cal fire authorities said the el do fra generating pyrotechnic device used during the party. so far it has scorched more than 7,000 acres sie saturday morning. it is 5% contained. overnight, demonstrators gathered near a police precinct in portland to protest police brutality. in rochester, new york, demonstrators erupted for a fifth straight day for daniel prude, a black man who allegedly suffocated as police was taking him into custody. elise preston with more. were there signs of violence in rochester? matly peeful.yat protest a change from what we've seen the last several nights. ♪ we shall overcome >> reporter: protesters hit the streets of rochester, new york, for the fifth straight night with church members and community elders at the forefront to keep the peace.

on saturday, a peaceful rally turned violent when protesters lit fireworks and threw molotov cocktails. one set a man's feet on fire. police used teargas to disperse the crowd. 59 people were arrested. and according to police records, of those 59 arrested, the majority of them are from the portland area. a few suspects are from out of state. nanc >> elise preston joining us in new york. thank you. meantime, we are now hearing from jacob blake for the first time since a court hearing last week. he is a black man who was shot in the back in kenosha. he spoke publicly in a video shared by his attorney. >> every 24 hours, it's pain -- it's numbing pain. it hurts to breathe. it hurts tsleep. it hurts to move from side to side. it hurts to eat. >> blake remains hospitalized,

now to the presidential race. a new cbs news poll finds former vice president joe biden beating president trump nationally. among likely vots, biden has a ten-point lead over mr. trump. 52% to 42%. the surveys were conducted last week and are based on nearly 2,500 registered voters. the white house remains on the defense today. more inflammatory allegations from a soon-to-be released memoir by a trump insider were leaked to the press. this as democratic leaders and the administration reached an increasingly rare bipartisan agreement. i think the good news is the speaker and i have agreed that neither one of us want a government shutdown. >> reporter: ahead of congress returning back to session this week, treasury secretary steve mnuchin and nancy pelosi already informally agreed to a clean continuing resolution to provide funding for critical services and federal programs. t they're still at odds over

coronavirus relief package. >> we have to ma sure the public knows how we can solve this and why the administration is standing in the way of crushing the virus. so whher it $1 trillion or $1.5 trillion, again, let's not get caught on .'s ree this.a nuer >> reporter: after spending mu of the last three days fending off reports he disparaged veterans, the president is now facing attacks from one of his former lawyers, michael cohen. the former trump insider plans to release a memoir about his work for the president tuesday. cohen makes several allegations in the book, obtained by cbs news, including that trump made overt and covert attempts to get russia to interfere in the 2016 election and calls trump a cheat, a liar, a fraud, a bully, a racist, a predator, a con man. in 2018, cohen pleaded guilty to

financial and campaign finance crimes and lying to congress about his involvement in an effort to build a trump tower in moscow during the last id cn. the white house is calling cohen's book "fan fiction" and says cohen has lost all credibility. and campaign 2020 continues on as both candidates will visit shanksville, pennsylvania, friday to mark the anniversary of september 11th. no word yet if their appearances will overlap. cbs news, the white house. from co e packed bars and beaches this labor day weekend with some ignoring urgent warnings from top health officials to help curb the pandemic. yesterday more than 31,000 new covid-19 infections were reported. as of friday, more than two dozen states showed an increase in average new cases. and take a look here. this is what it looked like in miami. some people were spotted without wearing masks or practicing
