spread the flames, and at least 35 people have now died in dozens of out-of-control wildfires burning from washington state to california. in the small city of detroit, oregon, it looks like a bomb went off. the fast-moving flames have destroyed everything in its path. laura podesta has been following the story. what are firefighters up against today? >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. the wildfire forecast today and the next few days includes very hazardous air quality from los angeles to canada. unfortunately, rain is not expected until at least wednesday. the bobcat fire forced mandatory evacuations yesterday as it moved closer to homes north of los angeles. greg vanny isn't sure if his 100-year-old cabin survived. >> like the seven plagues, biblical sense. >> reporter: the raging tu down west coast and left everywhere

from california to canada with dangerously bad air quality. >> it looks post apocalyptic actually. kind of spooky. >> reporter: in northern california, the north complex fire has killed more than a dozen people. >> my mom was a really cool chick. >> reporter: holly cataraysick's mother milicent is among the victims. >> when i didn't hear from her when i woke up, i knew something was wrong. i knew if my mom had gotten out she would have called us immediately. >> reporter: today president trump attends a briefing with cal fire in sacramento county. >> i think he needs to see what's going on and see the destruction that's happening. >> reporter: the president addressed the wildfires last night at a rally in nevada. >> like the biggest we've ever had. it's crazy, it's crazy what's going on. thousands and thousands and thousands of acres. it's crazy. >> reporter: jay inslee, the democratic governor of washington, said president trump needs to take climate change more seriously. >> and these people whose homes were destroyed that i've seen ys, ey deserveion n the last few

ag >> reporter: in oregon, more than a million acres burned last week alone. double compared to a typical year. and president trump is blaming california's wildfires on bad forest management, though much of the land that's burning is federally owned. and scientists say that drought and high winds are to blame. anne-marie? >> hopefully mother nature will give a little bit of help today. thanks a lot, laura. and now to the other big weather story -- tropical storm sally is expected to slam louisiana and mississippi as a hurricane tonight. strengthen and pack up to 100 mile-per-hour winds with stronger gusts and life-threatening storm surge. right now hurricane warnings are posted for portions of southeastern louisiana and eastward to mississippi. the mississippi/alabama border that is. the storm drenched parts of

south florida over the weekend. sally could drop up to two feet of rain on parts of the central gulf coast through the middle of the week. and a $100,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of a shooter who opened fire on california police officers in an apparent ambush. it happened saturday night in compton. the video shows the shooter approach the parked patrol car and shoot several times through the passenger side window before taking off. the l.a. county deputies, ages 31 and 24, were critically injured and had to undergo surgery. the department's sheriff said it looks like they will be able to recover. and a sheriff's deputy in georgia has been fired after video surfaced of him beating a black man during a traffic stop. video shows roderick walker pinned to the ground and being punched several times. walker's lawyer says that the incident happened friday after the vehicle he was riding in with his girlfriend and two

children was pulled over because of an alleged broken taillight. >>hey apched demanded he have i.d. and when he told them he did not and cooperated with them, they became upset when he inquired like every american citizens have the right to inquire why are you asking me for my i.d. i'm not driving, and i have not done anything wrong. >> walker's being held in a jail hospital without bond because of outstanding warrants. a criminal investigation into the arrest is reportedly being turned over to county prosecutors. president trump visits arizona today after holding an indoor rally in nevada yesterday. the event not only violated state regulations but also went against his own administration's pandemic guidelines. still, mr. trump criticized democratic rival joe biden, telling the mostly maskless crowd that he'll be re-elected.
