i'm anne-marie green. we are going to begin with hurricane sally. people in its path have been urged to evacuate as the storm comes in. sally is a category 2 storm with winds of 100 miles per hour. it's eye is expected to come ashore tonight. storm surge expected particularly in southeast louisiana, mississippi and alabama. nancy chen is in gulfport, mississippi. how are residents preparing for this storm?. >> reporter: good morning to you. mandatory evacuations are in place for many low-lying areas. the winds here are already starting to pick up as the outer bands of sally are beginning to impact the gulf coast. life threatening storm surge when sally makes landfall. >> reportees

biloxi, mississippi boarded their homes and businesses. others got sand bags. the storm is moving slowly over the gulf of mexico, gaining strength from the warm water. >> the longer it stays out in the gulf of mexico the more and higher the likelihood is that it continues to grow in size and scope in severity. >> reporter: five named storms churned in the atlantic yesterday. the first time that's happened in nearly 50 years. hurricane sally is the focus right now for residents along the gulf coast. >> i'm very concerned. when they say evacuate, you have to go and i leave. we leave. my whole family leaves. >> reporter: while many low-lying areas are under mandatory evacuation orders some say they are not leaving because they've been through worse. >> i've been through camille, katrina, george. >> reporter: those staying put are watching sally closely.

>> it's lingering, meandering, d needomo. e' it h aap pntoo. be prepared, right? >> reporter: the storm is expected to dump as much as two feet of rain in some areas. and the storm keeps slowing as its forecasted track continues east creating more potential for that dangerous storm surge. nancy chen, gust port, mississippi. ahead on cbs "this morning" we'll talk to fema administrator our they are preparing for hurricane sally's landfall. bermuda took a direct hit from hurricane paulette. the storm packing torrential wind and rain. trees and power lines were knocked down. no serious property damage and

no deaths or injuries. firefighters on the west coast now will face another day of windy conditions. out of control wildfires have left at least 36 people dead and scorched 4 million acres across three states. the city of talent, oregon is in ruins. 22 people are missing in the state. governor brown has asked the president to declare a major disaster so oregon can get much needed resources like shelter and medical assistance. firefighters took this video from a helicopter over northern california. more than two dozen fires are burning in the state. the crews were called in to rescue injured firefighters. and those wildfires in the west have become a key campaign issue for both president trump and democratic challenger joe biden. natalie brand reports from the white house. >> it's my profound honor to

slightly a ahead but the presidt within the margin of error. >> you're an amazing group of people. we love you. we're taking care of you. and i'm never letting you down. >> reporter: an organization aimed at getting out the latino vote for biden announced it's spending millions of dollars on bilingual mail and political ad. the biden campaign has already dropped new political ads targeting black men in hopes of recapturing turn out numbers similar to those of former president obama's totals. the former vice president cast his ballot in delaware's primary monday morning with just about seven weeks left to the general election. natalie brand, cbs news, the white house. during president trump's visit to sacramento things turned a little hectic when protesters appeared to surround a california highway patrol vehicle after the presidential arrived at the airport. one man climbed on top of the car and got thrown off.

that protester in the red hat was thrown several feet on to the ground. he suffered minor injuries. chp said that officer feared for his safety and hit the gas pedal when the protester started to climb on to the vehicle. the reward is now $175,000 to find the person who ambushed two l.a. deputies sitting in their patrol vehicle. surveillance video shows a person walking up to the car and firing off several shots on saturday. one deputy is a 31-year-old mother who was shot in the jaw. but she still called in for help and even applied a tourniquet to the other deputy. both are still in the hospital and expected to survive. at this point there's no known motive for the shooting. the police chief in rochester, new york has been abruptly fired amid outrage over daniel prude's death.

the city's mayayor took the actn against the chief two weeks before he was to step down. she suspended her top lawyer and communications director as the death in march days after he was handcuffed and restrained by officers. >> i have apologized to the prude family and this community for the failures that happened along the way including my own as mayor and i own those failures. protesters clashed with police early sunday. authorities used rubber bullets and a sound canon to end the four hour standoff. so coming up on the "cbs morning news" a possible sign of life on the planet venus. what scientists discovered and welcome back alex trebek. business owners opposing the ruling. the owner of the barber shop which re-opened in may reacted to the decision. >> it brings tears to my eyes. we didn't have any money coming in from anywhere and it was awful. >> a spokeswoman for the governor says the administration will appeal the ruling. the "rapid city journal" said south dakota attorney general reported hitting a deer with his car. but it was actually a pedestrian he killed. investigators say he reported striking a deer while driving saturday night. the attorney general's office said he immediately called 911 after the crash and had not been drinking. the body of a 55-year-old man was discovered the next morning. relatives say the man crashed his truck in the area earlier and was apparently walking near the road. an investigation is under way.

and a "las vegas review journal" says the host of an indoor rally for president trump has been fined for violating nevada pandemic orders limiting public gatherings to 50 people. the trump campaign says about 5,000 people attended sunday's event in henderson. the business where the rally was held was fined $3,000. nevada health officials say they expect to see an uptick in new coronavirus cases after that rally and another one held for mr. trump on saturday. so, still ahead, an invitation to live like tv royalty. the mansion where the "fresh prince of bel-air" lived. it's available to rent. we'll show you the amenities. bel-air lived. we'll show you the amenities.

up there. macy's says this year's thanksgiving day parade in new york will be a very different one because of the pandemic. the 94-year-old holiday tradition will be scaled back. television only event. instead of a long parade route the giant balloons, floats and performers will be contained to a one block stretch in front of macy's flagship store. the balloons will be tethered to vehicles instead. being handled by volunteer. and search crews combing through an area destroyed by those northern california wildfires came across something absolutely remarkable. they pulled a puppy from the rubble on friday. rescuers found a small black dog in what appears to be the frame of a charred vehicle. it suffered some minor burns. the little survivor was given a new name, trooper. they tracked down the owner of the property who said they were not able to locate all of their dogs before evacuating but we really need a little bit of good

the pandemic still has many families staying isolated and that has many parents dipping their toe into a new service. nancy chen tells us what it is. >> reporter: this pool looks like something you might find at a resort with a waterfall, hot tub and lounge area. but it's actually in the queens, new york backyard of brian. it was built for the family to enjoy but the coronavirus pandemic changed that. >> i was laid off in march. my mom had to close her business. we had to find a new method of income. >> reporter: he turned to swimply. works similar to airbnb. homeowners can rent out their pool. the app has grown to include 6,000 pools in 30 states. business exploded during the pandemic with parents looking for a way to entertain the kids. >> really seemed to be the simplicity. i was kind of like why didn't i ever think of that idea?
