democrats in the battle over replacing supreme court justice ruth bader ginsburg.senatomitt he's on board with the senate taking up a vote on a nominee ahead of the election. he had been viewed as a possible holdout. meantime, a public memorial takes place today for justice ginsburg. her body will arrive in front of the supreme court at around 9:30 eastern. that is where laura podesta is just outside of the supreme court. what can we expect to see today? >> reporter: good morning. people are coming from all over the country to pay their respects to justice ginsburg. we're expecting some long lines, huge crowds. she will lay in repose at the top of the steps right behind me here from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. today and all day tomorrow. final preparations were finished yesterday outside the supreme court where justice ruth bader ginsburg will lie in repose today and tomorrow. >> important for us to come down and have our children see what an impact that she has made. >> reporter: next door at the

capitol, republicans are confident they have the votes to fill the vacancy she leaves behind. >> we will certainly do that this year. >> reporter: senate majority leader mitch mcconnell was asked if he understood why many americans view the vote as a double standard after he blocked president obama's nominee in 2016. >> i can only repeat that we have an obligation under the constitution should we choose to take advantage of it. >> reporter: president trump says he'll announce his nominee on saturday. he met with judge amy coney barrett for the second straight day yesterday. and he'll meet with another top contender, judge barbara lagoa, in florida on friday. >> now we're going to have to pick an incredible woman, billiant woman. and watch the abuse that she will take. >> reporter: senate democrats say their gop colleagues should not be rubber stamping a supreme court justice. >> you are setting a horrible precedent -- >> what an extraordinary thing

to already know how you're going to vote on a nominee who has not yet been nominated. >> reporter: only two republicans have voiced opposition to holding the nominating process this close to the election. and those two senators would be susan collins of maine and lisa murkowski of alaska. it would take a total of four senators to block a nomination. anne-marie? >> laura podesta at the supreme court. thank you so much. so cindy mccain, the widow of longtime republican senator john mccain, is endorsing joe biden. yesterday she tweeted there's only one candidate in this race who stands up for our values as a nation, and that is joe biden. president trump has frequently attacked her husband including in 2015 when he said he didn't consider mccain a war hero because he preferred those who were not captured. mrs. mccain's backing could give biden a boost in arizona, a key battleground state that her husband represented for 35 years.

so ahead on "cbs this morning," cindy mccain joins us to discuss just what led to her endorsement of joe biden for the president, along with how she feels about the state of the republican party now. president trump and joe biden will face off in their first debate in just six days. the event will take place in ohio and feature six 15-minute segments. we've learned that the candidates will square off on topics including the supreme court, the covid-19 pandemic, the economy, race and violence, election integrity, and their previous records. the fda is expected to roll out tough new vaccine standards this week if the trump administration wants an emergency approval of coronavirus -- of a coronavirus vaccine. the "washington post" says that the agency will issue stricter guidance to boost transparency and public trust. the decision will also make it very difficult for any vaccine to get the green light before

election day which president trump has been pushing for. this comes as the covid death toll in the u.s. passed 200,000 yesterday. now there are new fears that number could almost double before the year's end. danya bacchus from los angeles. >> reporter: 20,000 american flags cover the grounds of the national mall in washington, d.c. each one represents ten u.s. victims of the coronavirus pandemic. >> these flags are indicative not only of the lives lost but of the families left behind and suffering. >> reporter: house speaker nancy pelosi visited the memorial before leading a moment of silence on capitol hill. >> while i think it's a shame -- >> reporter: in march, president trump said if 200,000 americans were to die, it would mean his administration had done a very good job in protecting the public. >> i think it's a horrible thing, but if we had not done it right, you could have two million, 2.5 million or 3 million. but it's a horrible thing. should have never, ever

happened. >> reporter: vice president mike pence echoed that idea during a campaign stop in new hampshire. >> because of what we've all done together, because of the president's early action, putting the health of america first, i know in my heart that we have saved hundreds of thousands of american lives. >> reporter: health experts believe the coronavirus will surge again as fall gets under way and the flu season begins. one of the disease models used by the white house now projects the u.s. death toll will rise to more than 375,000 by the end of this year. 20 states plus washington, d.c., and puerto rico are now reporting higher numbers of infections in the past two weeks. it's been more than two months since the country has experienced that kind of increase. danya bacchus, cbs news, los angeles. vice president mike pence is safe this morning after his plane was forced to make an emergency landing. the video of air force two

appears to show a bird strike shortly after takeoff in new hampshire yesterday. the plane immediately circled back to the airport out of an abundance of caution. pence was on his way back to washington after speaking at a campaign rally. an administration official told the "ap" that pence and his entourage were not in danger. the vice president flew home on a cargo plane used by the secret service. a canadian woman accused of sending a ricin filled letter to president trump remains in federal custody. she made her first court appearance yesterday in buffalo, new york. the 53-year-old is charged with making threats against the president of the united states. she was arrested sunday at the u. authorities say that she had a loaded gun and a knife. the envelope addressed to the president was intercepted at the white house mail-sorting facility. coming up on the "cbs morning news," there are calls for california's disneyland to reopen to the public after a covid shutdown.

deputies' misconduct for sharing unauthorized photos from the site of the january helicopter crash that killed her husband, daughter, and seven others. the sheriff has admitted that eight deputies took or shared graphic photos of the scene. he said he ordered the images to be deleted. >> when deputies took the information, they didn't log it properly, they used it for their own benefit, showing people at bars, his response to tell them to delete evidence, now this isn't just evidence of an investigation. this is evidence of misconduct. >> the lawsuit seeks damages for negligence, invasion of privacy, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. the "south bend indiana tribune" says notre dame's game on saturday has been postponed. came after seven more fighting irish players tested positive for the coronavirus. yesterday notre dame said 13 players are in isolation because of positive tests.

another ten are in quarantine. the school says it is pausing all football-related activities until further testing is complete. the game will be rescheduled. and the raleigh, north carolina, "news and observer" says what was once hurricane paulette has come back to life and re-formed off the coast of africa. the national weather service had dubbed it a zombie tropical storm. paulette made landfall in bermuda as a category-one hurricane more than a week ago. the national hurricane center says what is now being called post-tripoli cyclone paulette should dissipate in the next several days. ahead, amazon prime day is coming. the online retail giant announces the date for its annual sale event. for its annual sale event.
