coronavirus. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne marie green. we begin with president trump's battle with the coronavirus. he remains hospitalized this morning. his doctors say he could be discharged as early as today. overnight, the white house released this picture of mr. trump working from a conference room at walter reed medical center where he is receiving treatment. the president was flown there friday. from outside of that hospital in maryland, what is the latest on the president's condition? what do we know? >> annemarie, the president has been receiving a variety of treatment. including a steroid that is normally reserved for those quite ill. still the president's doctors say he is the president wanted to make that point in person. >> he thanked the staff in a video he tweeted thursday

afternoon. >> the nurses, doctors, everybody here. i've gotten to meet soldiers and first responders. what a group. >> the president took a ride outside to see his supporters. with secret service in the car, the drive drew criticism. >> they might get sick. they might die. its responsibility is astounding. >> i learned a lot about covid. i learned by going to school. this is the real school. this isn't the read the book school. >> president trump has been receiving treatment here since friday. his physicians say he could be discharged today. >> the fact of the matter is, he's doing really well. he is responding. >> the president has been given supplemental oxygen twice. the doctors are tweeting hem with remds and dexamethasone, a steroid given to patients with severe cases.

>> he still has time to go. >> former fda commissioner says doctors are cautious. >> typically in the first week, you have the viral response phase. that second week when patients sometimes get in trouble. >> in a poll, 65% of americans believe president trump probably would not have been infected had he taken the virus more seriously. with election day now less than a month away and the president still here at the hospital, he's missing out on those famous, massive face-to-face rallies his supporters thrive on. he's's trying to prove his strength on social media and with that dry-by visit yesterday. >> speaking of that drive-by visit where the president was waiving to his supporters, there is a lot of criticism. how is the white house responding? >> the white house is defending that visit saying it was

approved by the doctors and his team here at walter reed. they released a statement saying appropriate precautions were taken to protect the president and all those supporting it, including ppe. the movement was cleared by the medical team as safe to do so. still other doctors that say that move was irresponsible and the agents will have to quarantine for two weeks. they call this visit theater. >> in maryland, thank you, naomi. contact tracing is under way for more than 200 people that were supposedly exposed to covid in new jersey. he traveled despite knowing one of his aids tested positive. he held a round table and delivered a speech. a spokesperson said that president did not have

interaction with staff or guests that would be considered, quote, close. when we all learned president trump was diagnosed with coronavirus, there was concern not only here in the u.s. but around the world. elizabeth palmer explains. >> i'm sure president trump is going to be fine. he has the best possible care. >> up beat words from a man who has been there, prime minister johnson. >> i shook hands with everybody. >> famously casual at the start of the pandemic, johnson caught covid back in march and almost died. his popularity soared when he got out of the hospital but it since slumed as britain widely criticized the handling. another leader that kacaught th virus was briz al yazilian lead

scored masks and called those self-isolating cowards. his approval rating went up after but that may have had more to do with food subsidies for the poor. >> other countries almost immediately doubled down on their own covid precautions. angela merkel diplomatically warded off italian prime minister. allies they might be but in the time of covid, this was getting too close. reporting for cbs news, london. the white house says vice president mike pence and his wife again tested negative. this is the third time the couple has tested negative in the past week. he is set to resume campaigning

for the president. before pence hits the campaign trail, he will face senator kamala harris in the first and only vice presidential debate. susan page will mod rate at the university of utah. there could be extra safety measures in place following the president's diagnosis. courses tell cnn the candidates will be separated by 12 feet. that is more than the seven feet originally planned. the audience will be made up of students from the college but it is not clear how many. >> amy coney barrett's quick confirmation is under pressure after three snartz tested positive. utah snars, north carolina

senator and wisconsin senator all tested positive. >> we just need to keep pushing ahead. we don't need to slow things down. the judiciary will do their job starting on the 12th. >> for mcconnell to go along with the hearing endangers the safety of snartz and staff who work diligently on the hill. they ought to be delayed. >> democrats acknowledge there is little they can do to block barrett's hearing but a final vote in the full senate would likely fail if one or more republicans is out sick. senators must be physically present on the floor to cast their vote. turning now to california where wildfires have now burned 4 million acres. the most land burned there in a single year. evacuation orders are in place in napa county.

stocks broke after word broke of president trump's coronavirus. the dow originally dropped 134, the naz 251 and the s&p by 32. >> republicans accused of blocking a bill that would give airlines and contractors nearly $29 billion to avoid furloughs for six month mores. it came in after many started laying off workers. flight travel is down nearly 70%. movie theater chain regal is closing its doors. the parent company announced it will be suspending operations of 536 theaters as of thursday. regal is the second largest cinema chain in the u.s. postponed movies including the latest james bond is hitting the
