good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we of course begin with the vice presidential debate. vice president mike pence and senator kamala harris squared off last night. their exchanges were relatively calm at least compared to last week's presidential debate. still, there were some tense moments on stage. so danya bacchus is in salt lake city where the debate took place. danya, what were some of the main points that they sparred over? >> good morning, anne-marie. right away the candidates paashed over the coronavirus they went on to spar over the economy, climate change, the supreme court, and whether justice was served in the breonna taylor case. the coronavirus pandemic was center stage last night with plexiglass dividing vice president mike pence and california senator kamala harris.

it. >> reporter: meanwhile, white house officials are pushing back on criticisms tying the covid outbreak there to the september 26th supreme court announcement. few attendees wore masks and there was no social distancing during that event. >> we actually know that some of the infection here within the white house did not come from that event. >> reporter: the president's senior adviser, stephen miller, is among the latest to test positive for covid-19. miller is one of several to test positive after attending white house. debate prep theeps saysffas tesd general garry thomas is the second senior military official to be diagnosed this week. he is suffering mild symptoms and staying at home. nearly all of the joint chiefs of staff are in quarantine after attending top level meetings last week. overnight, hurricane delta strengthened back to a category

2 storm packing winds of 100 miles an hour, is headed for louisiana, and a stretch of the u.s. gulf coast is under a hurricane warning. the hurricane slammed into mexico's yucatan peninsula yesterday morning. this is what it looked like in cancun. tens of thousands were evacuated, including american tourists. there were no reports of deaths or injuries. people in louisiana are now rushing to prepare for the storm's landfall which is expected tomorrow night. meteorologists say delta will likely hit as a major hurricane and drop up to a foot of rain. one man tells us he's ready for it. >> being from new orleans, everybody understands hurricane season from june to november, usually when we get something that will make us evacuate. hoping that poor folks in lake charles, they don't get it again, but it's got to hit somewhere. >> the governors of alabama, mississippi and louisiana have all declared states of emergency. several coastal areas have also begun evacuations.

the former minneapolis police officer charged with george floyd's murder is out of jail this morning. derek chauvin posted $1 million bond yesterday. video in may captured him pressing his knee against floyd's neck for several minutes as floyd said he couldn't breathe. last night protests erupted in minneapolis. several hundred people took to the streets demanding justice in floyd's name. >> hopefully some justice will be served in his name, but seeing as breonna taylor didn't get her justice, many other names never got their justice, i don't really see any hope. >> attorneys for floyd's family say chauvin's release is a painful reminder that the family is far from getting justice. chauvin and three other former officers are scheduled to stand trial in march. there are new developments surrounding the grand jury proceedings in the breonna taylor case.

>> that's video from inside a los angeles police station as a man attacks an officer and pulls the cop's gun out of his holster. the police department released video of last month's incident. the suspect entered the police station, knocked the officer ton pistol whipped him. he escaped but was captured after a high speed car chase and he faces several charges including attempted murder of an officer. the cop suffered cuts and bruises. well, investigators examined the cost of covid treatment for president trump, and a police shooting victim was transferred to rehab. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. the "milwaukee journal sentinel" reports jacob blake was discharged from a hospital and transferred to a chicago spinal cord rehabilitation clinic. blake was shot in the back seven times in august by a kenosha, wisconsin, police officer. his attorney says blake is paralyzed from the waist down. the shooting was captured on video and led to several nights of violent protests.

the officer is on administrative leave as the shooting is being investigated. the "new york times" looks at how much president trump's coronavirus treatment could cost or rather would cost most americans. mr. trump spent three days in the hospital being treated for the virus. he arrived and left by helicopter and received multiple tests, oxygen, steroids and an experimental antibody treatment. "the times" says for someone who is not president, all that would cost more than $100,000. all of the president's costs were covered by the federal government. and "forbes" says a nearly complete skeleton of a t-rex dinosaur sold for a record $31.8 million at a christie's auction. the 13-foot high, 40-foot long dinosaur named stan was expected to sell for around $8 million, but a 20-minute bidding war between two buyers drove up the price. the 67 million-year-old dinosaur

the restaurant chain has 7,300 employees. 7,000 of those have been furloughed during the pandemic, and many have not returned to work. airbnb is rolling out strict new coronavirus guidelines. the company says hosts on the site need to implement the company's five-step enhanced cleaning process or risk getting booted from the site. that includes sanitizing with disinfectant along with cleaning dust and debris. hosts will be prompted to commit to these guidelines starting next week and have until the end of november to comply. and soon, you can live like mario and luigi. super nintendo world theme park is set to open next spring at universal studios japan. as a preview, nintendo announced it's opening a new cafe next friday. the theme park shops and rides will be based on characters of the game, including a super mario kart ride. visitors can wear a smart wristband to collect digital coins and compete against other

our top stories this morning, last night's vice presidential debate. vice president mike pence and senator kamala harris sparred over the coronavirus, the economy, race and police reform. the debate was relatively tame in contrast to last week's presidential debate. and hurricane delta is on track to slam into louisiana tomorrow night. delta restrengthened overnight to a category 2 with winds of 100 miles an hour. it's forecast to drop up to a foot of rain. the governors of alabama, mississippi and louisiana have declared states of emergency. many college campuses are shut down or only allowing a limited number of students during the pandemic. that has millions of students taking classes on the web, and many are finding a new way to learn remotely.
