♪ this is the "cbs overnight news." >> to denver, a private security guard is? security after a deadly shooting at dualing demonstrations. it happened saturday in a so-called patriot rally and cameras captured the confrontation. a warning, the images are polices responded after a security guard hired to protect a news crew shot a man following an argument. the victim sprayed an unknown substance at the guard and he died later in a hospital.

the number of coronavirus cases is rising faster than we have seen in weeks. 50,000 plus new infections have been reported every day since wednesday. lilia luciano has the latest. >> reporter: president trump said that covid is behind him and soon will be gone from the country. >> a lot of flare-ups but it is going to disappear. it is disappearing. >> reporter: nationwide hospitalizations spiked last week in 41 states and deaths are rising in 18 states and puerto rico. >> they are shocked to hear about my grandfather's passing. you know, he had a discharge date and everything. and in a matter of days everything changed. >> reporter: many intensive care units are at capacity with covid patients. >> in terms of being better prepared for the wave, we have dramatically improved clinical car. >> reporter: a 75% drop in cases in arizona after the state put a

♪ this is the "cbs overnight news." >> thanks for staying with us. the u.s. death toll from the coronavirus has now topped 214,000. and parts of the country are seeing a new surge in cases. one hot spot is wisconsin. where drivers lined up in the cars for hours waiting to be tested. we have the story from milwaukee. >> right now, the state of wisconsin we are in a bad place. >> milwaukee mayor tom barrett said wisconsin's surge in coronavirus hospitalizations is quote, very dangerous. >> we continue to be in the top five in both the per capita and

number of cases and the total number of cases. that's not where we want to be at all.emand f covitests led to long lines and wait times of up to three hours. this wisconsin medical facility said hundreds of staffers are out sick or in quarantine. with hospitalizations up about 500%. health officials say a perfect storm of factors is behind the surge. >> we initially saw the increases in colleges and universities. that certainly spread well beyond the boundaries. >> i was going to die. >> angela wikowski contracted the virus in april and spent two weeks in the hospital, barely able to breathe. she still suffers from rashes and hair loss. >> i'm also a musician. i study clarinet and i used to be able to go for hours no problem. now i can go for 35 minutes and i'm having coughing fits.

essentially all it's doing is playing on conspiracy tropes that have been around for decades. >> reporter: this man is an associate professor that studies conspiracy theories. how many people believe in qanon? >> we get between five and 10%s. it's the least believed conspiracy theories that i poll on. which is a good thing. q has capitalized on beliefs that are already popular among americans sompt t americans. so the idea that there's a deep state is a belief. and so, many of the component parts of qanon on their own poll very well. and are more popular than qanon. >> it used to be the case that you had to do a lot of leg work if you were questioning who really assassinated jfk or who controls global finance.
