it's friday, october 30th, 2020. this is the "cbs morning news." four days out, the candidates for president crisscross the country, trying to shore up support ahead of next week's election. hear their duelling messages for voters as the clock winds down. record spike. the u.s. records more than 88,000 new coronavirus cases in a single day, the highest number ever. how some of the hardest hit states are trying to stem the outbreak. and breaking overnight, countersuit, why a louisville police officer involved in the deadly raid of breonna taylor is now suing taylor's boyfriend. captioning funded by cbs

good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we're going to begin with the election this morning. we're just four days out from election day. the president and joe biden are continuing their marathon push to make their final pitch to voters. they will hold competing rallies in minnesota today. the former vice president is set to appear at a drive-in car rally later this afternoon. while mr. trump will headline a rally shortly after biden's event. nancy chen is in washington. how are the candidates trying to lure the last minute voters? >> reporter: good morning to you. the candidates are crisscrossing the country, trying to reach as many voters as possible. especially in key swing states. president trump and former vice president joe biden have very different closing arguments. the race for the white house is being fought on familiar territory. >> five days from now we are going to win florida. >> florida goes blue, it's over. it's over.

>> reporter: the presidential campaigns converged on the sunshine state thursday. holding rallies in tampa, a few hours apart. >> i've never been more optimistic about america and america's chances than today. because i know the american people. >> we are doing good. see the numbers today? 33.1 gdp, the biggest in the history of our country. >> reporter: while president trump focused on positive economic data. >> we locked down, we understood the disease, and now we're open for business. >> reporter: democratic nominee joe biden emphasized the white house's handling of the coronavirus. >> donald trump has waved the white flag, abandoned our families and surrendered to the virus. >> reporter: today, both candidates will be in the upper midwest, a region where covid-19 cases are spiking. yesterday, house speaker nancy pelosi formally ended pandemic relief talks with a trump administration. >> i feel very confident that joe biden will be elected president on tuesday. so while we don't want to be overconfident or assume anything, we have to be ready

for how we are going to go down a different path. >> reporter: while negotiating a new relief bill, pelosi and the trump administration remain at odds over testing, aid to local governments and business liability. the latest count shows more than 81 million voters have already cast their ballots this year. the numbers suggest 2020's turnout could be the highest in more than a century. anne-marie. >> well, i suppose that is good news, more people being involved in this process the better. nancy chen in washington, thank you so much. so we have reached another grim milestone in the battle against the coronavirus. more than 88,000 confirmed cases were reported yesterday in the u.s., setting a single day record. now, that beats the previous record set just last friday and saturday. on those two days, more than 83,000 new infections were reported. naomi ruchim shows us which states are being hit the hardest.

>> reporter: the surging covid-19 cases across the country are not just due to more testing, according to dr. anthony fauci. >> we're going to have many more hospitalizations, and that will inevitably lead to more deaths. you're using the word mandating masks, yes if that works, let's do it. >> reporter: the governor of kansas is considering a mask mandate with record-breaking cases, overstrained hospitals and rising deaths. >> the state did not reach 500 covid deaths until september. roughly six months after the pandemic began. it took a little over six weeks for another 500 kansans to die. >> reporter: missouri and indiana are seeing a dramatic rise in hospitalizations and indiana set a daily high for covid cases. finding the balance between the economy and keeping people safe remains a challenge. new york city is allowing 40,000 stores to sell goods on the sidewalk. >> if the stuff is on the street

already, it would help a lot. >> reporter: in massachusetts, many restaurant tents are coming down due to cold weather. >> it is concerning. the tents definitely helped us to keep our heads above water. but with all of this now just going indoors, it is concerning. >> reporter: the virus continues to claim lives, like 65-year-old sharon hunt, a retired teacher from milford, ohio. her heart broken family says many are not taking the virus seriously. >> when they go around and saying, it is less than 1%, when that less than 1% is your mother, it opens your eyes. this isn't a percentage. it is somebody's family member. >> reporter: hunt's husband says he also thought the virus was a hoax, until recently. naomi ruchim, cbs news, new york. clemson tigers star quarterback trevor lawrence is out of tomorrow's big game against boston college after testing positive for the coronavirus. the 21-year-old is currently in isolation.

lawrence took to social media saying he has mild symptoms adding the only thing that hurts is missing this weekend's game with his teammates. breaking overnight now, a louisville police officer who was shot during the raid that killed breonna taylor is countersuing taylor's boyfriend for alleged assault. sergeant jonathan mattingly alleges that kenneth walker shot him in the leg during the botched drug raid at taylor's apartment in march. mattingly and two other officers returned fire shooting 32 rounds into the apartment and surrounding area. taylor was shot six times. no officers were directly charged in her death. last month, walker filed a lawsuit against the police department, and the city of louisville, for police misconduct. he sat down with gayle king earlier this month and walker said police did not announce themselves before busting down the door. >> so the doors fly off the hinges. >> i let out one shot, and, you know, i'm figuring somebody is trying to break in or something.

they're not going to want to do anything after that. >> after that, what happens? >> gunshots all at the same time. >> the officers claim they did announce themselves as police. mattingly is seeking a jury trial, damages and attorney fees for, quote, battery assault and intentional emotional distress. at least six people are dead and at least 2 million customers remain without power this morning after zeta lashed the gulf coast and rushed inland. zeta has weakened and moved off shore after making landfall in hurricane-ravaged louisiana as a category 2 hurricane on wednesday. the powerful storm raced through the south yesterday with winds up to 100 miles an hour. the storm peeled off roofs, toppled trees and knocked down power lines in alabama, georgia and mississippi. france's anti-terrorism prosecutor says the suspect in a deadly knife attack was not on the radar of intelligence

agencies as a potential threat. three people were stabbed to death yesterday after police say a young tunisian man carrying a copy of the koran pulled a knife on them in a church in nice. authorities say the attacker arrived in italy last month and traveled to paris about three weeks ago. the suspect was shot by police and is hospitalized in critical condition. so coming up on the "cbs morning news," former liberty university president jerry falwell jr. fights back against the school. and sidewalk shock. a man in new york city falls into a hole filled with rats. this is the "cbs morning news." here's to the duers. to all the people who realize they can du more with less asthma thanks to dupixent, the add-on treatment for specific types of moderate-to-severe asthma.

yesterday to protest the new measures. president emmanuel macron imposed the new shutdown to help stem a surge in coronavirus cases. paris has been living under a nightly 9:00 curfew since october 17th. the new nationwide lockdown will last until at least december 1st. jerry falwell jr. is suing for defamation and a former intelligence official weighs in on election security. those are some of the headlines on "the morning newsstand." cbsnews.com reports former director of national intelligence dan coats says russia is the new england patriots of messing with elections. in his first television interview since president trump abruptly replaced him last year, coats told "cbs evening news" anchor norah o'donnell that russia is trying to undermine americans' confidence in democracy. he also said he's worried about potential riots and violence after the election.

>> the nightmare scenario is that election night people will draw conclusions or days after will draw conclusions that their candidate has been denied the victory. >> coats says he has no reason to believe that this won't be a fair election. the associated press says jerry falwell jr. is suing liberty university. the former president and chancellor claims the evangelical school damaged his reputation in a series of public statements after he resigned in august. falwell alleges that liberty officials accepted what falwell says are false claims about his involvement in an extramarital affair between his wife and a business partner. there was no response from the school. and "the new york times" says a man waiting for a bus experienced a new york nightmare. he fell through the sidewalk and into a rat-filled vault. surveillance video shows the 33-year-old man waiting for a

bus in the bronx on saturday, when the sidewalk gave way. he dropped 12 to 15 feet into an underground space teeming with rats. his brother says he was trapped for about 30 minutes before firefighters pulled him out. >> rats crawling on him, can't move, he's just -- he didn't want to yell. it was so bad, he didn't want to yell, because he was afraid it was going to be rats in his mouth and stuff. he was just there. >> the man suffered injuries to his head and arm. his family says he's traumatized by the incident and he's considering legal action. all right, so still ahead, promoting safety at walmart. the retailer pulls displays of guns and ammunition from its stores in the u.s. mornings were made for better things than rheumatoid arthritis. when considering another treatment, ask about xeljanz... a pill for adults with moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis

on "the cbs moneywatch" now, walmart removes its guns displays, and it will cost more to stream netflix. diane king hall is in new york with those stories and more. good morning, diane. >> good morning, anne-marie. investors will get another look at the health of the economy today when the latest consumer spending numbers are released. it comes after stocks closed higher yesterday, fueled by a pair of stronger than expected economic data releases. the dow gained 139 points. the nasdaq rallied 180. and the s&p 500 added 39. walmart says it has removed ammunition and firearms from displays at its u.s. stores. the world's biggest retailer made the decision based on isolated incidents of civil unrest. walmart cited safety of its workers and customers. the action comes as philadelphia grapples with looting and violent protests after officers shot and killed walter wallace

jr. walmart made a similar move in the wake of the police killing of george floyd. exxonmobil is planning to cut its workforce as oil prices crumble again. the oil giant is anticipating that 1900 workers will be affected by the reduction through voluntary and involuntary methods.ts a largel place at the company's management offices in houston. like other energy companies, exxonmobil says the pandemic is hurting its business. and netflix is making a change to prices. it is hiking subscription costs. the streaming giant standard plan is now up a dollar. it will cost new and existing customers 14 bucks. the premium plan is now $18 versus the previous 16 bucks. the price of the basic netflix plan will stay the same. new members will see the updated prices right away. current users will receive a notification 30 days ahead of the price increase. folks can now buy airplane meals at the supermarket. finnair started selling meals at

grocery stores. it was made to prevent job cuts at the catering unit due to covid-19. the main courses up for grabs grilled spring onion and rice or smoked arctic char with risotto. the meals sell for about 15 bucks a pop, they are apparently a hit. 1600 meals sold within days at one supermarket. anne-marie? >> got to scratch that travel itch, put you in your dining rooms, right next to each other, watch a movie on your tablet and get up after two or three hours. >> right. i think this is a better idea than when people were going to the airport to sit in a plane for that restaurant pop-up. this is better. >> yes. i agree. a lot safer. diane king hall, diane, you're in new york, diane, have a great weekend. >> you too. so up next, a record-breaking flight, hundreds of cats and dogs go on a long journey in search of a permanent home.

he tweeted this photo after apparently meeting with the president last night in florida to discuss criminal justice. lil wayne is the second hip-hop artist to work with the president on what is called the platinum plan. the plan is a list of proposals aimed at increasing wealth within the black community. president trump's team says that they are also working with ice cube on the plan. meanwhile, rapper 50 cent recently posted an instagram supporting the president, but then later backpedaled and said he does not support him. more than 600 cats and dogs were flown from hawaii to the mainland united states in what is reportedly the largest animal airlift rescue in history. the animals were loaded on to a chartered plane wednesday for operation paws across the pacific. they were relocated because the pandemic has led to overcrowding at hawaii's pet shelters. the flight landed in seattle yesterday and the animals will be sent to shelters in several western states.
