results in a prime time special cbs news . i it's tuesday, november 3rd, 2020. this is the "cbs morning news." this will be the most important election in the history of our country. >> my message to you is simple, the power to change this country is in your hands. in your hands. >> decision day. it all comes down to tonight. will president trump stay in the white house or will voters choose joe biden to lead the nation? we're taking a look at their closing messages, the anxiety across the country and the tiny township that already released its election results.

good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. of course we begin with an election day unlike any other in u.s. history. after months of aggressive campaigning, president trump and joe biden now leave it up to the voters. about 98 million people have already cast a ballot. that is the biggest early vote total ever and more than 2/3 of all the ballots cast in 2016. so skyler henry is outside a polling location in alexandria, virginia. skyler, what are the chances that we may see results from this hotly contested race, i don't know, by tonight? >> reporter: hey, anne-marie. good morning to you. every indicator we've had up to this point essentially says patience will be a virtue as it will take some states days to get their final tallies in. we could see a few early indicators, especially as polls close in some key battleground states in the south. but as you mentioned, we've already seen historic voter turnout thus far with people in some cases waiting hours to cast

their ballots as the candidates make their closing arguments as to why they should win the white house. president trump and joe biden visited cities with historical significance. >> we can be a little bit superstitious. >> they held a midnight rally in grand rapids just as he did after his 2016 victory. >> tomorrow we're going to make history once again. >> reporter: the former vice president was in pittsburgh. >> because you represent the backbone of this country. hard working families who are asking for nothing but a fair shot. >> throughout the day both candidates urged americans to vote. >> get your families, get your neighbors, get your boss. grab him by the tie and say, let's go, boss. >> i believe the message is going to be loud and clear. it's time for donald trump to pack his bags and go home. >> reporter: voting during the coronavirus pandemic has reshaped the election process. at least 98 million ballots have

already been cast. that's more than double the early vote in 2016. >> reporter: five voters in dixville notch, new hampshire, kept their ballot alive. in some states it may take patience. >> what would be a failure is if we fail to count legitimately cast ballots simply because of some arbitrary cutoff. >> reporter: president trump plans to spend tonight at the white house while biden has two more events in pennsylvania todaday. according to our cbs news battleground tracker, while joe biden may have an early lead, nearly 70% of president trump supporters say they are going to submit their votes today, and that's something the president is leaning on heavily, anne-marie. >> all right. skyler henry in alexandria,

virginia. thanks a lot, skyler. so as skyler mentioned, joe biden was declared the winner in dixville notch, new hampshire. small township among the first in the nation to reveal election results. the former vice president got all five votes. by tradition voters cast their ballots minutes after midnight. despite the attention this township gets, it does not always predict the eventual winner or even the state's pick. there was also midnight voting in mills field. mr. trump had 15 votes and mr. biden 5. hart's delayed their vote. the judge yesterday said that those who oppose the drive throughs had no standing to bring a lawsuit. four republicans argued state election code in harris county does not allow drive through voting.

they claim that it's the same as curbside voting, which is only allowed for people with disabilities. today only one drive through polling station will be open though. the plaintiffs plan to appeal. and parts of the country are on edge. anxious about what will happen after election day. some businesses, retailers and government offices are all boarded up. there's even steel fencing around the white house. deborah alvarone has more on preparations for possible unrest. >> reporter: demonstrators who gathered to protest a make america great rally scuffled with police in new york city. the caravan of president trump supporters didn't make it there but instead blocked a bridge and a major highway outside the city. in houston, protesters gathered outside the courthouse where a federal judge dismissed a republican challenge to 127,000 drive-through ballots while the gop argued drive through voting is illegal, the judge ruled the

gop didn't have standing in the case. >> people are rising right now because they don't like it when people try to take away their votes. >> reporter: and voters in grand, north carolina, who were pepper sprayed by police after marching to the polls over the weekend say they will be back across the country, federal, state, and local officials are preparing for potential unrest on and after election day. >> chicago police department will increase its patrol. >> i have also directed general stencil to call up our national guard should their services be deemed necessary. >> we do have assets in place if things do go to the side of civil unrest. >> reporter: many retailers and property owners are installing plywood on doors and windows from new york city to southern california. here in washington, d.c., many businesses near the white house and capitol have already boarded up and d.c. police say they're going to have every police officer working on election day. workers installed steel fencing

around the white house in the event of protests. beverly hills will close rodeo drive to cars and pepedestrians >> it's a shame to see this happen over what should be a democratic process. >> reporter: over the weekend people gathered to support president trump and appeared to clash with counter protesters. well, our cbs news team will bring you election results in primetime in a special tonight. cbs news 2020 election night. america decides. norah o'donnell will bring us the covererage from times squar. starting after the 7 p.m. evening news. the death toll has risen to at least four in a shooting in vienna, austria. a government official calls yesterday's attack an islamist terrorist attack. six shots were fired at locations including outside the city's main synagogue. a suspected gunman was killed by

protest shooter. those are some of the headlines on the morning newstand. the milwaukee journal sentinel reports bail was set at $2 million for an illinois teenager accused of killing two men during a demonstration in kenosha, wisconsin. 17-year-old kyle rittenhouse faces charges for allegedly shooting the men following the police shooting of jacob blake. rittenhouse is also accused of wounding another man. during a zoom hearing yesterday the father of one of the victims testified that rittenhouse is a flight risk. >> kyle rittenhouse thinks he's above the law. he's been treated as such by law enforcement and so he believes he's justified in this case and for him to run wouldn't -- wouldn't surprise me. >> rittenhouse's attorney says that he acted in self-defense and tried to turn himself in to police moments after the shootings, but officers did not stop him.

and the daytona beach news journal says that hurricane eta is strengthening as it nears the coast of nicaragua. the category 4 hurricane is packing maximum sustained winds of 150 miles per hour. that's almost a category 5. the nicaraguan army scrambled to evacuate people. they are warning of catastrophic winds, massive flooding and landslides. nearly three feet of rain could fall on nicaragua and honduras through friday. and the washington post says a run away train was saved by a whale. the train ran past the end of the elevated tracks in the netherlands yesterday but instead of plummeting more than 350 fe 30 feet to the ground, it came to rest on a giant plastic sk l sculptu sculpture. ironically, the sculpture's name was saved by a whale's tale.

added 40. walmart is giving chef scanning ro boots the boot at about 500 of its stores. it ended its relationship with startup bosa nova robotics. they identify out of stock or misplaced products. walmart found human workers could give similar results. apple is slated to host a third product launch next tuesday. the company didn't give any hints on what it planned to reveal, but the event is titled, one more thing. it is likely something to do with the first mac product powered by the apple silicon chip. they announced they were developing its own chips for the mac in june but hasn't revealed any details about the products yet. move over, kids. hasbro is out with play-doh products dubbed grownup scent. lawn smell, grill king, over priced latte.

the city's famous shopping area, were turned on yesterday. this year's light display features messages of hope to celebrate people who have donated their time and efforts to help others during the pandemic. organizers call them the silent heroes of 2020. daytime tv talk show host jeannie mai was forced to withdraw from "dancing with the stars" after undergoing surgery for a life threatening throat condition. she underwent the operation on sunday for a condition that could have potentially closed her throat and blocked air flow to her lungs. she said that she was heart broken that her "dancing with the stars" journey had to end here. and another daytime tv talk show is making news. eve, a host on cbs's "the talk" announced she is leaving in december to put her personal life first. the grammy award winning rapper and actress joined the show in 2017. >> i have had the most beautiful

election day to be the most tense day of their lives. the younger people experiencing the most stress. so it's no surprise that meditation apps are seeing a spike in usage as people look for ways to cope. nancy chen spoke with one new user who says the proof is in the practice. >> everybody talks about meditating and i was like, no, that sounds like hocus pocus. how is that going to help? >> reporter: for 31-year-old katie richmond sitting in silence seemed like the worst thing ever for her anxiety, but since june she's been meditating every day for ten minutes and says it's changed her life. >> i am able to sleep better. now i feel like i'm able to handle the daily stressors better. >> begin by taking a big, deep breath. >> reporter: meditation app head space says the downloads are up 20% since mid march and calm reports its daily downloads have doubled. experts say meditation can
