the cdc is worried that small get togethers could turn into super spreaders. there are 88,000 people in the hospital with covid-19 in the u.s. that's a record according to the covid-19 tracking project. the number of deaths yesterday topped 2100. the most since early may. and johns hopkins says the u.s. has recorded 22 straight days of at least 100,000 daily cases. we have a reporter in washington. health officials fear it's going to get worse. >> yes, tom. because even though thanksgiving travel is way down this year over last, still, a million people a day packed airports across the country last weekend. many americans are scaling back thanksgiving this year. >> we're going to do a zoom call or face time. we'll make some type of contact and, you know, give thanks just

to be over the phone. >> health officials say small gatherings are the biggest spreaders of the coronavirus. >> the risk is high for families. there is just no way to sugar-coat that. >> still, triple-a expects up to 50 million americans to travel for the holiday. >> my son moved here with my grandkids. so thanksgiving, here i am. i didn't want to come. but i did. >> some are getting tested before seeing family and friends. >> that's a lot of people getting tested. everybody wants to make sure they're safe. >> a negative test may be a false security blanket. >> it is not an invitation to interact with others because you could test positive in the subsequent few days. >> skyrocketing cases and hospitalizations have forced state and local governments to put in new restrictions. without any new stimulus packages, businesses are struggling. >> for every restaurant staff

janet yellen is rumored to be the front-runner for treasury secretary if approved by the senate. she would be the first woman to run the department. severe storms rolled through north texas overnight packing torrential rain and destructive winds. check out the damage in arlington. tornado warnings were issued in several counties including dallas, tarrant and denton. there was no confirmation if a twister touched down in the area. but storm sirens were heard blaring in the affected counties. no deaths or injuries were reported. three, two, one, zero. ignition. liftoff. >> well, it's liftoff again for spacex. the company fired off a falcon 9 rocket from cape canaveral florida last night. marking the 100th launch. it sent another set of 60 satellites into orbit. the mission set a record for spacex rocket reuse program. for the first time, a reusable

utah desert. and we have an update on a missing fishing crew. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. the cape cod times reports the coast guard suspended the search for the four member crew of a maine fishing boat we told you about yesterday. the 82 foot boat sank monday about 20 miles northeast of province town, massachusetts. the coast guard says it discovered debris and an empty life raft. authorities say the crew did not make a distress call. coast guard was alerted when the vessel's emergency beacon made contact with the water and sent out a signal. the tampa bay times says tampa bay rays rookie outfielder ray arozarena was arrested in mexico following a family dispute. the player's agent says it's the result of an parent domestic dispute. he was detained for problems letting to his ex-partner. it's unclear what charges he's facing. arozareno won the babe ruth
