coronavirus are surging after thanksgiving. the u.s. is topped over 200,000 infections and only one day. the cdc will hold an emergency meeting next week to decide who gets the first vaccines. tragedy overnight, shots were fired sending black friday shoppers running. one was killed and another was critically injured. businesses got slapped with covid-19 violations as the black friday crowds shopped at the stores. >> i am a visual person and i have to see it and tried it out. good morning. it is november 20th. i am devin fehely. >> i am emily turner . taking a look at the current temperature, 35 in concord, below freezing in santa rosa. the in the land areas like the

valley is where we will likely see frost this morning. you can see the locations on the water, san francisco and oakland are the only ones in the 40s. cooler temperatures overnight by 10 to 15 degrees cooler. along the coast at 56 degrees, around the bay at 60. 64 degrees and lined with temperatures climbing in the afternoon. the story is pretty much clear and cool in the morning with warm and mild temperatures in the afternoon. 67 in santa rosa, 61 in pacifica , and 64 and san jose. we will not get close to 70s today. it will be a 60s kind of day. it is a grim milestone for train 28, the first county in the bay area to report over 500 deaths from covid-19 with over

500 cases reported on thursday. the seven-day positivity rate is down slightly, hovering just above 6% with 19,000 confirmed deaths in california since the beginning of the pandemic. if you went to visit family during thanksgiving the advice today's to get tested. millions went to see friends and family despite warnings from health officials and they hope to do contact tracing through your phone. kpix 5 susie steimle has the latest. >> reporter: drivers rolling into the santa clara found grounds to get tested. >> at some point you need to be with your family. >> reporter: this is what the county is asking people to do. >> we are asking people to stayed home and not gather as much as possible, but if you did, please get out and get tested.

>> reporter: they hope that cell phones will hold the key to the contact tracing. >> the more people that answered the phone calls and text messages the better we can handle the spread of covid-19 in san francisco and reopening our city. >> reporter: you will get a test text asking you to fill in the blank for the contact tracers. they have more than 900 a week. >> we have large surge of infections widespread across the city. the numbers have been increasing sharply. >> reporter: the search started before the holiday season with contact tracing, and they expect the surge will continue through the summer. >> we solved the spike in the summer and the quicker we get it under control the better off we are in the long run. >> reporter: susie steimle, kpix 5. >> if you get a positive test health officials are hoping you will respond if you get a text message. the more efficient you are at

texting, the more efficient they can be in stopping the spread. you can see the number of cases in the u.s. has the past 13 million. another daily record was set yesterday with the country saying over 205,000 new infections and only one day with 264,000 people in this, in the u.s. have lost their lives due to covid-19. plans are being drawn up for distributing vaccines. cbs elise preston has a report from new york. >> reporter: the cdc will hold an emergency meeting next week to determine who will get the coronavirus vaccine. the committee will hold a nonbinding vote on which group should have authority, priority with help group providers with long-term care facilities followed by first responders, frontline workers. and then those over 65.

pfizer and moderna are seeking emergency use authorization for the vaccines and the fda will rule on the pfizer request december 10th. if approved vaccines will arrive with the pandemic spreading out of control across much of the u.s.. 32 states now report higher infection numbers. new records were set in pennsylvania, arkansas and massachusetts this week. >> we are almost full, kind of every day. >> reporter: on thanksgiving day over 90,000 covid-19 patients were hospitalized in the u.s. which is also a record. the new number has been rising steadily for weeks. many stores have reported fewer customers on black friday, the traditional start of the holiday season start. in some places the social distancing rules taming the

often frantic event. >> we were a little bit worried about the crowd size but the crowd size was small so we were able to social distance. >> reporter: health officials are bracing for another covid- 19 surge after the holiday weekend. >> what's done is done in terms of the thanksgiving day gathering. if you learn someone in your gathering has covid or comes down sick, you definitely want to quarantine. >> reporter: an estimated 50 million americans ignored the advice to stay home, and traveled somewhere this week. 6.5 million glued to their destinations. elise preston's cbs news new york. people in los angeles county are getting ready for another stay-at-home order taking affect on monday, and everyone has been asked to state home as much is possible, wear a face covering outside and the county is banning

gatherings outside of the house sold, and putting more restrictions on businesses. the order will last at least until december 20th. the search is on for a gunman that killed a young man and critically injured a young boy at a mall in sacramento. this happened just after 6:00 at the southwest entrance at the arden fair mall. the shooting triggered evaluations as investigators examined the crime scene. they heard 8 to 12 shots according to witnesses. they are looking for the suspects seen on the surveillance video, 18 to 25 years old. the community activists spoke with the relatives of the victim. >> i know it was an isolated situation, and the young man did not see it coming. these people knew each other and it ended up being violent and tragic for whatever reason. >> the man that died was only 18 years old. of 15-year-old boys in the hospital with life-threatening

injuries. the thanksgiving tragedy highlighting the dangers of the bay area coastline. a four-year-old girl drowned thursday afternoon at mcclures beach at point reyes national seashore with waves between 8 and 12 feet high when she was swept out to sea. her father jumped in and tried to save her but it was too late. there was an incident at 6:00 last night at front and laurel streets and it was a violent attack. the police said that a man and woman were transported to the hospital. mike friday is in the books as we turn the page to small business saturday. the economic fallout due to the pandemic has been especially hard on small businesses and they hope to get a chance to recoup some money they lost with 100,000 small businesses nationwide already shuddered during the pandemic. still ahead on kpix 5 and

here is a live look at the white house this morning, and one day after say he would accept the electoral college results, this morning is setting a new bar for joe biden to enter the white house. this comes after the federal judge delivered a stinging rebuke of the latest challenge. >> reporter: before hitting the golf course for the second day in a row, president trump was already teed off, already declaring that joe biden can only into the white house as president if he can prove that is ridiculous 80 million votes were not fraudulently or illegally obtained. twitter flagged the tweet because there is no evidence of widespread fraud. >> i am the president of the united states. do not ever talk to the president that way. >> reporter: he again refused to concede warning the electoral college not to certify mr. biden the winner. >> if they do they made a mistake because this election was a fraud. >> reporter: the presidential campaign hit with another

stinging defeat after a last attempt to overturn the win in pennsylvania by joe biden. the federal judge said calling the election unfair does not make it so, that charges require specific allegations and prove. we have neither here. the campaign will appeal to the u.s. supreme court even at the trump administration transition to president-elect joe biden well under way. mr. biden is spending the holiday weekend at the delaware beach house and expected to receive the first presidential daily intelligence brief on monday. >> certainly i will, and you know that. >> reporter: president trump said he would leave the white house on january 20th. that is if the is not declared the winner and will not say whether he will attend the biden nomination. the california christmas tradition may not happen this

year but in this case the coronavirus is not to blame. whales have stayed longer off the waters of the california coast meaning that the crab season is delayed. the wildlife is concern that whales would get caught in the fishing gear so crabbing season is set back to december 16 when they hope that the whales will be gone by then. >> if you were a whale in an area with nothing but good food, and not a bunch of weather to fight, why would you leave? >> in the next few weeks the california fish and wildlife will flight over the fishing ground to see if the wheels have moved, and hopefully in time for christmas. that fisherman is right, we will be absolutely calm and clear this morning. here's a look at the temperatures with the live picture from the treasure island camera. it is chilly with 30s in most spots with the exception of oakland and san francisco, in

the 40s due to the influence from the water. 45 in concord, 30 in santa rosa. we will warm up in the afternoon. we will be 3 to six degrees above high for the maximum half of the day. this high pressure system is dominating the pattern right now. it is parked and will stay around for quite some time. that will keep the skies clear. we could see a few clouds from the low pressure system to the north of us, but for the most part it will be really clear. here is the future cast, and not a lot to show. only clouds off the coast showing you moving forward over the next 48 hours. pretty much the same story at marin county and along the coast . it is a chilly morning, especially inland and the valley. some frost on the windshield and you will need your jacket while walking the dog. in the afternoon dry weather

continuing over the next six days and chances of rain are not good. monday through thursday is that low pressure moving through. that is an off chance. we are not doing well when it comes to the drought. most of us are in a severe drought, and some are in an extreme drought area. that will not change anytime soon. we don't expect rain until at least the middle of december for any significant precipitation. 62 in half moon bay, 65 inland and 63 in vallejo. we have mix of 60s and 70s in the bay area. at the far north bay we will be a little bit warmer. we have a temperature dive at the beginning of the week before we start to climb slightly toward the end of the week. for them most part a rinse and repeat of cool mornings and clear skies. it is black friday shopping

with all businesses closing up shop by 10:00 p.m. betty yu has the report from san jose on how businesses and shoppers follow the rules. >> reporter: despite the pandemic many shoppers were determined to carry on the black friday tradition. this mall had a socially distance online with retailers allowed to operate at 25% capacity. santa clara county is in the purple tier. at santana, this story had a moderate wait. >> it is a good run, and we will run in and out with our mask on, and play it safe. we want to keep up with the traditional spreading love, getting dressed up and enjoying what we can. >> reporter: this year more shopping happening online with the national retail federation expecting sales to grow by 30% over last year holiday season. the trade group said americans

are expected overall to spend more this year. >> it's much more convenient online. i'm a visual person and i like to see it, try it out. i like going to the stores better. >> reporter: santa clara county said enforcement officers generally did not find large crowds early in the day with primary violations failure to submit and post a revised social distancing protocol. the county said they will have more compliant staff visiting high-traffic shopping areas to look out for the public safety through sunday. >> it's not too crowded or crazy. everyone is socially distancing and wearing a mask. >> reporter: the staff help to direct cars and control traffic, and deandra usually avoids the black friday crowds. >> this time there's not many people out i feel like due to the pandemic. it is nice to walk into the store since we have not really

been able to shop like that. >> reporter: or the holiday lights in mild weather, the main reason people chose to leave their homes. santa clara county is reminding retail businesses that they must comply with the 10:00 p.m. through 5:00 a.m. stay-at-home order. from san jose, betty yu, kpix 5. santa clara county said they want to keep the public as safe as possible this a holiday shopping weekend and already issued 76 violations for noncompliance for the covid- 19 protocols by noon on black friday. how a group and san francisco gives back to the community. steph curry shows off his golf game and not just his putting drawing criticism. ♪

live from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix 5 news . welcome back. your time is just about 6:30. thank you so much for joining us. i am devin fehely. i am emily turner. let's begin this half-hour with the weather. it is clear and chilly, especially in the inland valleys. that is because we have no cloud cover to keep that warm temperature close to the earth. looking at the visibility map, no problems to report right now. you are in the 30s in some areas.

right along the water is where we see the warmer temperatures with 40s. your 24-hour temperature change showing us more chilly than yesterday at pretty much every spot. temperatures dropped overnight, and they will be climbing during the afternoon hours. it will be warmer than average. along the coast in the 50s with a few clouds, but for the most part clear. 60 along the bay and inland 64 degrees. it is a mix of 60s pretty much no matter where you are. at the coast you could dip down into the 50s. health officials in san francisco avenue strategy to keep cases under control. it involves your phone, like many things this day. there is hope behind the new plan. >> reporter: the coronavirus pandemic is raging throughout the country and the cases are rising in san francisco. the city is averaging 130 new cases of covid-19 per day, over

900 a week. because of that the 200 contact tracers at the department of public health are adjusting the strategy. it is from phone calls and visits to text messages. >> is the easiest way to get a hold of people and get responses, definitely. >> i would respond to that for sure. >> reporter: there are forms to fill out about safely isolating, and who you may have been in close contact with while infectious. the program will even backdate to when you may have begun spreading the disease. the epidemiologist says it takes advantage of the cell phone permanently attached to most people's hands, and precept contact tracers for those not so tech proficient. >> it's been successful at the university of arizona, for instance, to notify people about contact tracing. >> reporter: the text option will bypass the screening they do with the old-fashioned phone

calls in this era of incessant spam. >> you know who you're talking to and phone calls these days are mostly scams. >> reporter: the department of public health said tracing the contact of those that are sick with covid is the best way to stop the spread. >> the more that into the calls and text messages, the better in preventing the spread of covid- 19 in san francisco, and speeding up the reopening of our city. a popular pancake restaurant on the peninsula is temporarily closing down due to the coronavirus restrictions and the millbrae pancake house is been a mainstay since 1950 now. managers saying operating at reduced capacity due to covid-19 has turned out to be unworkable. after the final round of service tomorrow the restaurant will shut down until next year. 44 employees will be furloughed . here's a live look at the

east bay where there is a push to reclaim the ingenious land. several indigenous groups in the bay area are urging people to contribute to the land tax. they say it is a way for nonindigenous people living on the land to get back. they call it is attacks but it is voluntary. it's essentially a donation going into the land trust to be used to build ancestry us cemeteries and for business people to live together. the archbishops wilton gregory will be decorated as a cardinal and rome and is currently in washington dc. his predecessor resigned after mishandling sex abuse allegations in the church. gregory will have a role in electing the new pope when the need arises. the supreme leader of iran

is calling for definitive punishment for those killing the country top nuclear scientists. they have blamed israel for the killings but so far israel has declined to comment. investigators are investigating an apartment fire in the russian hill neighborhood. it broke out last night in a building above the broadway tunnel. crews got it under control fairly quickly, and no one was hurt. in novato neighbors came to the rescue after car crashed into a house. here is the damage at the fiery scene co. where the driver lost control. he slammed into the garage of this condominium. neighbors heard the commotion and jumped into action. >> i grabbed his arm and we both got him so far. we could get him a little ways and then we heard the car popping, and the flames were getting bigger.

we thought that the car may explode. i don't think you can think about how scared you are from something at that moment. we just wanted to make sure we got him out of the way. >> the two victims were rushed to the hospital but it's unclear how they are doing at the moment. the car caused a ghastly and pg&e was at the scene to repair it. there is an investigation into suspension failures. 150,000 electric vehicles are in danger of recall. the ntsb has said 43 complaints of the front joint yours which can lead to damage. it's the model s and model x suvs from 2016 through 2017 falling under the probe with no injuries reported. sleep is critical for children to have their physical and mental health but many kids do not get enough. it is a new sleep order identified affecting children. cbs nancy chen tells us what to look out for. >> reporter: nine-year-old nancy

tonight, 48 hours exams the case of a college student that bandaged vanished over two decades ago. >> it is the disappearance of kristen smart, a college freshman that bandaged in 1996 after attending a party off of campus at cal poly. the police had a suspect early on but a series of missteps hampered the investigation. it is more than two decades with the podcast helping to integrate the case. will take you step-by-step on the latest in the investigation. we tracked down paul florez, the last person to see smart alive. he has never been charged in the case and the family consistently denies his involvement in her disappearance and that may surprise you coming up on 48 hours.

hitting the beach during the first heat wave of the summer and temperatures sitting 160 degrees in parts of south wales. the total fire bans were issued in four states as they prepare for the catastrophic fire conditions. in the state of victoria after the australia covid-19 epicenter went 29 days with no new infections. the second wave was stopped by the 112 they lockdown through

the winter. nonessential businesses were closed, and no one was allowed out at night. after the devastating fires in the north bay more than a month ago one chef gives first responders the star treatment. sharon chin introduces us to the jefferson award winner for this week. >> you can see behind me that we are still standing. >> reporter: getting the order to close the sonoma restaurant temporarily when the grass fire swept through the north bay, destroying hundreds of homes. >> we were unable to operate even though the fires did not come close to us. >> reporter: the chef proprietor glen ellen starr and park avenue catering wanted to do something positive. >> our first response was to feed the first responders. >> reporter: he and his staff baked 150 pizzas a day for firefighters, pg&e and other first responders. >> they were appreciative with

fist bumps, hugs, and it felt great. >> reporter: giving away 1000 pizzas and partnering with other restaurants to feed the emergency crews, and he publicized the project over social media with $40,000 of donations pouring in. that allowed arie to keep giving. >> reporter: the nonprofit said that arie generously provided hundreds of bills at their workplace workshop, and they cope with trauma, high stress jobs. >> it's not just for the moment in the limelight, which is all about character and integrity. arie said he is just thinking is community for keeping them afloat during the pandemic, out in the cold and rain. >> they really stand up and support you.
