fears this morning as thanksgiving travelers return home. the tighter restrictions now in place for one bay area county. every minute we lose money. >> san francisco placed in the purple tier after explosive virus case rates. the businesses now being hit the hardest. >> and disruption for the 49ers. they have been banned from playing at levi stadium, and there are questions about where the team will play next. it is sunday, november 29th. >> let's start with a check of or weather. it is a chilly morning, pretty much the same story as yesterday. we are going to be waking up to cool temperatures, cold in some spots, down into the 30s in santa rosa.

30 degrees there. concord 36. only in the 40s really in oakland and san francisco. i feel like i said this exact same thing yesterday. that's pretty much what i'm going to be repeating through the week. current temperatures will start to warm up but it's the lack of a marine layer and any kind of visibility out there that is really causing that temperature to dip down and let everything cool down overnight. chillier in some spots than it was yesterday though we will start to warm up to seasonal temperatures. sunny for everybody. mid-60s inland. that is going to be the story for the remainder of the week. 65 in san jose, 67 santa rosa, 59 degrees in pacifica. it is going to be that story for the rest of the week. but i'll tell you a few variations just ahead. taking a live look at sfo where tens of thousands of

holiday travelers who flew out of bay area airports this week are about to head back as coronavirus sores. officials are keeping a close watch on the covid-19 rates after the thanksgiving holiday. the bay area is a sea of purple except for marin county which remains in the red tier this morning. according to the johns hopkins tracker, california saw more than 15,000 cases reported yesterday. the average positivity rate over the past 14 days is now up to 6%. and there are currently just over 2,000 icu beds available in the state. san francisco will be back in the most restrictive purple tier at noon today forcing most indoor activities to shut down including museums, movie theaters, gyms, and places of worship. the city must now comply with the state's curfew which bans people from gathering between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. restaurants offering late-night outdoor dining will be massively impacted. >> a lot of our business is going to be until 10:00 and

then later. we have a lot of dates and a stuff like that. up fortunately this does dig completely into, you know, our regular dinnertime. >> san francisco is seeing on average more than 900 cases per week compared with more than 200 during the of october the 12th. san mateo county will also slide back into the purple tier. most indoor retail stores as well as service providers have to reduce capacity to 25%. outdoor dining will still be allowed to continue but only until 10:00 p.m. as well. county supervisor david says that people are getting too comfortable around their family and friends. >> we don't have healthy communities. we don't have healthy economic communities. the spread takes place, according to our health officer, in those social settings more than it does at restaurants, more than it does at malls. and so therein lies the problem. we all have what's called social responsibility.

>> san mateo county is reporting a roughly 85% increase in new cases just from october to november. as with san francisco, san mateo will be under the state's new curfew starting tomorrow night at 10:00 p.m., requiring everyone to stay home except to kerr out essential activities. santa clara county has dramatically tightened its covid restrictions going well beyond state guidelines. the latest numbers show 760 new cases in one day. that shattered the previous one- day record of 545. there's also more people with covid in the hospital in the county than ever before. that number has more than doubled b the past two weeks. hat grown to 239. all contact sports are being banned from holding practices and games for the next few weeks in the county. that means the 49ers won't be allowed to host their next two games at levi's stadium or practice at their facility. the team has not said where they will play because of this latest emergency health order.

kpix 5's kenny choi reports on the county's new guidelines. worshippers inside their cars gathered for mass unsanta clara. under the new guidelines outdoor gatherings including religious services and protests will be limited to 100 people. >> this pandemic is like a high- speed train, and our projections tell us that we are on target to derail by around the third week of december if we don't apply brakes right now. >> reporter: displaying charts showing a record number of new cases in a single day a, officials believe hospitals are at risk of exceeding capacity very soon if current trends continue. stores including hair salons and barber shops will be forced to further reduce capacity to 10%. >> just trying to make ends meet. lowering the amount of people we can have in here. seems like it's taking away from how much he we can make. >> reporter: essential stores like groceries and pharmacies will be allowed he to operate

at 25% capacity but the added lockdowns mean even more difficult times for he retailers in the middle of a holiday shopping season. >> with these new restrictions we're praying and hoping we don't have to close the doors, we do e-commerce, but because of also the mailing restrictions, that imposes a very difficult time for us. >> we keep seeing these restrictions coming out, and it just gets harder and harder for the small businesses to stay in front of the changes. they're just come sog rapidly. >> reporter: hotels can only open for essential travelers or for people to quarantine. anyone traveling more than 150 miles is also required to quarantine for 14 days upon returning, with some exceptions, including healthcare workers. in santa claire remarks kenny choi, kpix 5. coronavirus cases are spiking across the country as well. four million new cases were reported in november alone. cbs news correspondent danya bacchus has more from los angeles where a new stay-at-

home order is about to go into effect. >> reporter: under new coronavirus restrictions millions of los angeles county residents will only be allowed to gather with people from their own households. the rule goes into effect monday and a is set to last three weeks. >> even if you are not feeling sick the simple act of gathering with people outside your household puts everyone at risk. >> reporter: even before thanksgiving gatherings covid- 19 cases were increasing in 32 states with pennsylvania, arkansas, and massachusetts breaking records. the nfl is suspending in-person team activities on monday and tuesday after a number of players and staff hosted out-of- town thanksgiving guests w. coronavirus hospitalizations at record levels, facilities are feeling the strain in many states, including colorado. >> if the growth continues on track with no change in that trajectory, at some point we won't be able to keep our finger in the dike any longer and would have to move to

terence mcarea rei junior and 20-year-old craig fletcher cooks were shot and killed at a birthday party held outside an art gallery. investigators say fletcher- cooks was shot defending his girlfriend after a group grabbed her. mcarea rei died after being shot by a stray bullet. if you have any information you can submit an anonymous tip through crimestoppers. new this morning, canada is clashing with the u.s. over shipments of prescription drugs. the canadian government is blocking bulk exports of medicines if it creates shortages in their country. the decision comes after president trump touted a rule that lowers prices for americans. canadian drug suppliers must give information to the health ministry before making any exports so potential shortages can be assessed. well, the time now is 6:10. still ahead on kpix 5 and

governor newsom is blocking the patrol of charles mansion follower leslie van houten. right now she is serving life in prison for her involvement in the killing of los angeles grocer bianca and his wife. her attorneys say they will appeal the decision. taking a look at the white house, president trump spent around $3 million on a partial recount in wisconsin, only for president-elect joe biden to gain votes in the state's largest county. this weekend donald trump has been splitting his time between camp david and the golf course. cbs's ben tracy has the latest. >> reporter: marine one dropped president trump off at his virginia golf club, his third day in he row of hitting the links. but his efforts to overturn the election results are going nowhere. in wisconsin, milwaukee county completed the recount paid for by the trump campaign. out of 460,000 votes cast, the

people for key roles including his economic team. mr. biden is also expected to receive his first presidential daily intelligence briefing on monday. ben tracy, cbs news, the white house. to southern california, an apparent road rage crash involving two vehicles with make america great again flags saw a black sedan flip onto its side. here's the latest from hermosa beach. >> oh my god! oh my god! >> reporter: this video from tmz which shows several vehicles waving american flags, apparently at least one had a trump 2020 flag on it. then you see a black sedan lose control and flip on its side. the wreck happened late saturday evening in hermosa beach. witnesses told us people in one car ex he changed words with the folks riding in the vehicle with a maga flag. moments later one of the cars, mustang, lost control and hit a row of parked cars before flipping over. people who heard the commotion

told us what it sounded like. >> so we came outside. we walked down the street, and lo and behold there's a car flipped over. so the thing about hermosa avenue is that there's not many streetlights -- or street science so a lot of people speed. >> reporter: we're told a young child was inside one of the vehicles. fortunately no one was seriously hurt. at last check police had not made any arrests. reporting in hermosa beach, cbs news. a beloved peninsula breakfast spot is preparing to flip its final pancakes today. the owners say it's only temporary, and hopefully this will give them and the economy a chance to recover. after nine months they say there's nothing more that they can do. >> it's heartbreaking. we grew up in this business. you know, this is our family.

the employees are our family. it's a really difficult time right now for all of us. i mean, i've been working here for like two years, and it just -- the community here is everything to us. >> they hope to be flipping pancakes once again by spring. well, let's take a look at our weather out there. it is going to be absolutely beautiful today. if you haven't got your christmas tree, if you want to do something outside safely at a distance this is the day to do it. but you might want to at least throw on a jacket if you're headed out early. taking a look at current conditions, 36 degrees in concord. san francisco 45, oakland still in the 40s at 43. but chilly and below freezing up there in santa rosa. that's pretty much going to be the story moving through for the remainder of the next seven days. we're going to wake up with clear, very cool, sometimes cold morningings, especially in those inland valleys that will warm up into the afternoon hours. thanks to those clear skies where we're going to have

beautiful weather. pretty much in the mid-60s no matter where you are. cooler along the coast. but that high pressure system that you see parked both above and below us that is really dominating our weather pattern. that is pretty much keeping any kind of precipitation, cloud cover, big changes all away from us. but that low pressure system is going to start to drop in, and we may see a few clouds over the next he seven days. what to expect. when you wake up, another chilly morning inland. it is going to warm up to a sunny and mild afternoon. not a cloud out there today. but that dry weather is going to continue. we do not see any rain in the futurecast north of us, to the east of us over towards the rockies, the four corners states, but here unfortunately we're not going to sea any. it is not looking good for our drought predictor. looking at futurecast as far as the clouds are concerned you've really got to pay attention to make sure that it is going forward. just a few offshore clouds.

maybe marine layer, but not building in too deeply. keeping everything clear and cold overnight. we are going to see a seven-day forecast that looks really similar pretty much every single day. we are going to see a few clouds that are going to move in on thursday, but for the most part we are going to be in the mid-60s right around the bye and inland areas. nice and clear. a little cooler along the coast. but you can rinse and repeat this all the way through the next seven days j. another mystery this morning. the statue which strangely popped up in a desert canyon in utah has now vanished, and no one knows who took it. the statue was named the monolith and is quite the mystery. it appeared last week. no one knows how it got there and no one knows how it left. the borrow of land management said although it was put there illegally they didn't remove it. and new this morning, michigan's first black-owned brewery is celebrating the launch of some new creations.

the 49ers are set to play the rams tomorrow but what happens monday could have a bigger impact. stricter protocols yesterday could include teams not being allowed to practice or play games there for the next three weeks. the 49ers are scheduled to play two home games during the stretch, and they also have a

home game in january, the last week of the regular season. the team is reportedly looking to relocate to either arizona or maybe texas. the restrictions also impact stanford and san jose state football as well as the cardinals, spartans, and santa clara basketball programs. how about some good news? the 49ers did activate three players off injured reserve, including richard sherman. trent williams was taken off the covid list putting all four in line to play today. the broncos currently have no quarterbacks on their active roster heading into their game against the saints. backup jeff driscoll tested positive on thursday, and the remaining three were ruled high- risk contacts and are ineligible to play. denver will likely use practice squad wide receiver kendall hinton or running back royce freeman. even before the news came

down santa clara had already been impact. the spartans' game at boise state was canceled yesterday morning due to contact tracing in the broncos program. last week san jose state dealt with a cancellation after fresno state had an outbreak. both games will not be made up. that leaves the spartans with only two games remaining this season. they are scheduled to host hawaii next saturday but will need to find a venue outside of santa clara county. ,well, a goalie on the school's soccer team filling in as the kicker yesterday at missouri. she handled the opening kickoff in the second half to become the first woman to play in a power five conference game. that was the only chance she got because missouri, unfortunately, shut out vanderbilt 41-0. >> i've had girl dads come up to me and they're like, you are inspiring my little girl.

welcome back. it is 6:29. >> let's start this half-hour with a check of our weather. it is going to be a very similar story to yesterday. tomorrow will be very similar to today. you can pretty much put that on repeat for the next seven days. temperatures very similar to yesterday, though slightly cooler as you're waking up. 36 degrees in concord, 30 in santa rosa. you are going to see some frost on your windshield. thanks to those inland valleys, that's where you are going to see the temperatures the coldest this morning. that's because we don't have any cloud cover. look at just how clear we are. that allows all that heat to escape overnight and those temperatures to really drop down. but that will also allow those temperatures to rise and to be

nice and warm, or mild, i should say, for this time of year. but we are a little chillier than we were yesterday in some spots with the exception of napa slightly warmer. our outlook for the day, it is going to be the low 60s right there around the bay. mid-60s in inland areas. the coolest along the coast at 59 degrees. sunny and cool no matter where you are. sunset 4:51. earlier and earlier and earlier. taking a live look at sacramento where police are still searching for the gunman who killed two teenagers. police say that a motive is still in clear. it leaves some shoppers not sure if it's safe to come back. a a 17-year-old and a 19-year- old was shot. the mall opened back up for a big holiday shopping weekend less than 24 hours after the shooting. although some people were hesitant. surprisinglily a good number of people were not worried about returning. >> i know usually these kind of things don't happen two days in

a row. >> it ain't the first time something like this happened at our mall. >> sacramento police are calling this an isolated incident. new this morning a security team for the l.a. county district attorney opened fire during an attempted car theft. it happened in the grenada hills neighborhood. police say security officers were parked in two cars outside of the home of d.a. jackie lacy. two people pulled up. one tried to get into an empty car. that's when the officers opened fire. >> the suspects fled and subsequently crashed not very far from here. those suspects in another vehicle fled. >> no one was hit by the gun fire. investigators do not believe the attempted theft was linked to the district attorney or her home. ms. lacy will be leaving office in january. california republicans have

reclaimed a u.s. house seat they lost two years ago. former congressman david valadeo defeated t.j. cox by a razor thin margin after losing to him by a razor thin margin two years ago. he will once again represent the 21st district in the san joaquin valley v. the 11 house seats, republicans have gained in this election, three of them are here in california. on monday crews are set to break ground on a two-year improvement project to make a major san francisco thoroughfare safer for pedestrians. the first stage of the 19th avenue project will stretch from lincoln to norillega street. the second span of improvements will span further.

drivers should expect delays when work is underway which will be from 7:00 in the morning to 5:00 p.m. monday through friday. the $46 million project is expected to run through february of 2023. small businesses hopefully getting a revenue boost this weekend. saturday was the 10th annual small business saturday. it's meant to drive traffic and dollars to local independently owned shops. for many merchants this year could be he a make-or-break season. >> this is a high stakes holiday year. specifically for black businesses, nearly half are shutting down currently right now in the country, and so this year more than ever it is crucial that folks go the extra mile to shop small. >> i feel like it helps the community. i also want to support businesses i really like, and i want them to stay. >> cbs reporter michael george has more on why small business saturday took on added significance this year. >> reporter: black friday 2020 was the second biggest spending

day in u.s. history. but it wasn't foot traffic that drove sales. that happened online. $8 billion in sales were made, according to adobe. but for some businesses, many of them small independents, it's too little, too late. in new orleans, nearly half of the shops have closed. bryce sanderford says coffee is about more than beans and water. >> the pandemic happened, and our business just ground to a complete halt. >> reporter: since the start of the pandem you can about 29% fewer small businesses have their doors open today. revenue has dropped 32%. and hundreds of companies that received government ppp loans have filed for bankruptcy since august, according to the wall street journal. hundreds of philadelphia's business owners are hoping this idea sticks and bolsters their bottom line. chris manages unique photo store. >> it's definitely important to

right here on kpix 5. new this morning a baby in singapore may have antibodies against the coronavirus. a newspaper in the region reports that the baby was born this month without covid-19 but with virus antibodies. the mother was infected back unmasn when she was pregnant. the woman's doctors believe that the antibodies were transferred during the pregnancy. the world health organization says it is not known whether the virus can pass during pregnancy or delivery. many hospitals in the midwest are becoming overwhelmed with the number of coronavirus patients. in topeka, kansas, one hospital just hit a devastating milestone. 100 covid patients and 100% capacity. covid patients are now on four floors of that hospital including most of the intensive care yont. a doctor would oversees the icu says they are facing grim prognosis. >> unfortunately many of these patients can't talk. they are on ventilators. many of them may not live to be

did laps and tried to keep the house wet. >> the fire danger rating is now at its highest level since fires tore through parts of australia last summer destroying 3500 homes. the good news here is we do not have fire weather. slight offshore winds but not strong enough for there to be a red flag warning here. it's pretty much going to be clear, cool, and during the day nice and mild. taking a look at your current temperatures or your current visibility, rather that marine layer out there pretty much nonexistent. without that acting like a blanket, that's allowed the temperatures to start to dip. current temperatures, you are below freezing in santa rosa, right at it in livermore. inland valleys are going to see the coldest temperatures. as you wake up this morning you are going to need a jacket. you can keep that on through midmorning. it will start to warm up as we get later into the day. the high pressure system is what's dominating our weather patterns keeping clouds to the

north of us. in fact, if we look at the futurecast eventually it is going to be clear. but in the meantime a chilly morning in those inland areas especially. sunny and mild temperatures this afternoon. that's going to be the story through the remainder of the week as that dry weather continues. unfortunately no chance of rain for us. pretty much all the way until the middle of december. we are going to see some of it to the north of us, but eureka is as good as it is going to get. that futurecast shows not much. just a little bit of cloud cover as it moves in and out in the overnight hours, and then it moves back out as we get towards the beginning of the week. and that's going to be the case all the way through the next seven days. our high temperatures for the day are going to be a mix of the 60s, no matter where you are, except for the coast where you'll be in the low 50s in those inland areas. it's going to be the same story. just cooler there closer to the water. and the far north bay, you are going to get warmer there. that seven-day forecast shows the rinse and repeat pattern of

>> i feel like i have his support, that he is hearing me out. >> reporter: and recommend the richmond resident has a lot of good news. she graduated from uc berkeley and landed her first job at a nonprofit helping other young people succeed in school. but then 2020 took a turn. >> father's day we were at the cemetery. we noticed that my mom was really not feeling as she had energy. >> reporter: cynthia rushed her mother to the hospital. the next day she would be diagnosed with covid-19, admitted, then you know you the baited, two years to the day her dad was killed. cynthia would not see her mother for over month. >> suddenly no one was there for her. no one was in the hospital to be with her. but also that was my father's death anniversary, so it really was just so many mixed emotions all at once. >> reporter: she fills her day with work, took care of younger

it is 6:56. time now for a look at this morning's top stories. public health officials are keeping a close eye on coronavirus case numbers as holiday travelers are set to return. the level of concern is heightened since covid-19 cases are already soaring in the region. and in santa clara county, 49er games and practices are banned now for the next few weeks. hair salons must reduce capacity to 10% while groceries and pharmacies have to drop to 25%. san francisco and san mateo counties are sliding back into the purple tier. most indoor activities will shut down today at noon. tomorrow they will follow the state's nighttime curfew banning gatherings between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. j. an attempted car theft went
