a new ring. >> and that's the overnight news for this wednesday. reporting for the nation's capito i'm jan crawfor it is wednesday, december 2, 2020. this is the cbs morning news. breaking news, a covid vaccine is approved for emergency use by britain. it will start vaccinating its population next week how soon could it happen in the u.s.? bribery investigation. the justice department looking at potential scheme involving a money for presidential pardon. coming out. "juno" announces he is transgender. >> good morning. good to be with you. we are going to kbin with the breaking developments of the fight of the coronavirus. britain approves the pfizer vaccine for emergency use.

the world's first shot backed by rigorous science. pfizer and partner bio-n-tech announced they approved the use of vaccine in britain. country to be vaccinating its population. the u.s. is not too far behind. two vaccines awaiting approval. the first americans could receive a dose in 13 days. first in line, health care workers and seniors in long-term care facilities. nearly 2,600 people died from covid yesterday. the second highest since the pandemic started. almost 100,000 people are hospitaled. the growing number of cases is overloading hospitals and some economic relief could be on the way. >> reporter: a panel of experts held by the cdc held a meeting.

voting on which americans will receive a coronavirus vaccine first. approximately 20 million doses that could be made available by the end of the year will go to health care workers and nursing home residents. federal documents obtained by cbs news point to december 15 for states to start receiving the pfizer vaccine. the moderna vaccine would be a week later. both awaiting emergency authorization. americans struggle, a bipartisan group of lawmakers approve a $908 billion package. >> we cannot abandon the american people, the families who are suffering at this time. >> this four-month covid-19 emergency relief package will help get us through the hardest months of winter and into a new administration. >> most of california already under a mandatory curfew, the governor warns he may institute a full stay-at-home order.

>> rhode island has opened two field hospitals to deal with the flood of patients. in michigan, the family mourns after losing both parents to covid days before thanksgiving, one minute apart. i need for this to never happen to another family. >> they had been married 47 years. reporting for cbs new its, los angeles. the cdc also reporting that the virus was in the u.s. as early as last december. the study found evidence of the virus in blood donations to the red cross in nine states. >> you won't have to quarantine for 14 days anymore if you are exposed to someone with covid. now people can resume normal activity after 10 days.
