good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. overnight, tens of thousands of people in california were placed under new lockdown orders. across the u.s. yesterday, there were 175,000 coronavirus cases according to johns hopkins university. since the start of december, there have been more than a million cases in this country. there are currently a record 100,000 patients 100,000 patients hospitalized. a new round of lockdowns in most populated states. >> debra, we are talking about california. what are some of the new restrictions that are going into effect there? >> it is a stay-at-home order, anne-marie green. that means people need to stay at home as much as possible. if you do leave, they are asking you to wear a mask 100% of the time. there are restrictions on

businesses and all until after christmas. >> much of california is under a stay-at-home order for the next three weeks to slow the spread of the coronavirus. >> these patients are not going to just stop coming. >> the measure closes businesses like restaurants and bars and limits restaurants to take out and delivery. >> we are a little nervous we are not going to make it. california is one of 25 states reporting record hospitalizations. >> we are going to see a peak of deaths and hospitalizations probably mid-january. as bad as things are right now, they will get worse. >> here on capitol hill, group of partisan lawmakers are looking at a $900 billion relief

are really under the gun. often local hospitals are under strain like in brazil. after a dip earlier in the fall, the number of infections and death there's are rocketing up. in turkey, the first full national lockdown since may. developing countries which rely on the w.h.o. for their vaccines will not see anything like this for months maybe even years. this is russia's program launched this weekend. even though its sputnik vaccine hasn't been fully tested. but it does make it the first country in the world to offer wide-spread covid inoculation. ahead on cbs this morning, we'll speak with dr. celie. a member of president-elect joe biden's coronavirus advisory board.

president-elect joe biden is set to announce his health and human services secretary as early as tomorrow. cbs has learned california attorney general javier becerra. will be selected. the first latino in the senate. and also rochelle walensky, currently chief of medical can center and professor at harvard medical school. a pair of debates in georgia last night. kelly loeffler refused to acknowledge the results of the election. >> president trump has ever right to use every legal resource available. in our own state, we have seen time and again that we have investigations that need to be completed. >> here we are several weeks after the election and kelly

loeffler continues to cast doubt on an american democratic election. >> meantime, democrat john osoff debated an empty podium and blasted his challenger for refusing to participate in the debate. the outcome is huge since it wll determine which party controls the u.s. senate. georgia governor told lawmakers he will not call a session to overturn georgia's election results. president trump was in the state over the weekend and continued to spread false claims of wide-spread fraud. >> president trump said his primary purpose was to campaign in two crucial runoff elections in january. >> at stake in this election is control of the u.s. senate, that really means control of this country. before the crowd, the president spent most of the rally complaining and repeating false

dow gained 248, nasdaq added 87 and s&p up 32. talk about a food fight. chick-fil-a is suing its top producers alleges companies like tyson foods and others fixed price and included increased costs. saying chick-fil-a's claims were unfounded. purdue didn't comment. kia is recalling 295,000 vehicles in the u.s. because the vehicles can stall or catch fire. the sorrento, forte, forte coupe and others the vehicles all part of the recall ranging 2011 to 2015. the automaker says no manufacturing defect has been found but is recalling as, quote, a preventative measure. affected drivers should have
