the u.k. started administering the first doses of the widely tested pfizer vaccine. this went to margaret keenan who turns 91 years old next week. the grandmother said she was privileged to be the first person vaccinated against the virus. here in the u.s. the fda could authorize pfizer's vaccine as early as the end of this week. meanwhile, the trump administration is denying a "new york times" report claiming it failed to lock in more pfizer vaccine doses over the summer which could delay more americans getting the shot. debra alfarone is in washington. debra, finally some hope in the battle against this virus. >> reporter: absolutely, anne-marie. all eyes are on thursday. that's when a panel from the fda will be looking at these new vaccines. after that there could be a vote to authorize emergency use and 24 hours later the vaccine could roll out here in the u.s. they're calling it v day in the

united kingdom. >> it's the beginning of the end of this pandemic. >> reporter: today the country kicks off a mass coronavirus immunization program. >> top of that priority list includes people in care homes as well as the over 80s. >> reporter: 87-year-old doctor hari shukla is one of the first to get the vaccine. >> it's already a crisis. >> reporter: here in the u.s. the food & drug administration may authorize the pfizer vaccine. today president trump hosts a white house summit to promote the rapid development of covid-19 vaccines. >> it's very transparent because the data upon which they base that decision will ultimately become totally public. >> reporter: a report from "the new york times" says the trump administration passed up the opportunity to buy more doses of the pfizer vaccine beyond an initial 100 million. the decision could delay the delivery of a second batch until june, but the administration says the report is false and

points to five other candidates including moderna's, which the fda could authorize later this month. >> operation warp speed seems poised to be on an almost miraculous timetable. >> reporter: they continue negotiating a coronavirus package. >> it will take a sense of urgency now. >> reporter: it's held up on aid to state and local governments and business liability protections. >> reporter: and while the vaccine might move forward this week, this vaccine we're hearing from senator mitch mcconnell, we might have to wait until next week to get movemen. >> they have to get on it. debra alfarone in washington. thank you so much. so despite mounting court losses, president trump is not giving up his fight to overturn election results. he reached out twice in the past week to the pennsylvania house

speaker asking about legal votes. sources tell the associated press that he pressed the state's legislature to replace the electors with people loyal to president trump. they say the legislature does not have the power to make that kind of move. meantime, president-elect joe biden has made an historic choice for defense secretary. we could find out very soon his choice for attorney general. natali brand has details. lloyd austin has emerged as the pick for the pentagon. he's the first black defense secretary. earlier monday biden's transition team announced key members of their health team. they include california attorney general xavier becerra for health and human services secretary. dr. vivek murthy and dr.

roichelle walensky. the president-elect also plans to appoint dr. anthony fauci as chief medical advisor on covid-19 tweeting dr. fauci isn't just one of our foremost experts on combatting viruses, he is a goodman and a tireless public servant. dr. fauci will appear virtually at an event tuesday with president-elect biden and vice president-elect kamala harris introducing the health pick. natali brand, cbs news, wilmington, delaware. the army is set to fire a significant number of officers and soldiers at fort hood over violence at the texas base. the action comes as the army will release the long-awaited report on the investigation into the command culture at fort hood which is believed to have failed to have addressed murders, sexual assaults and suicide. it was launched after the murder

of specialest vanessa guillen in april. hers was one of five on the base this year alone. this morning we are remembering one of the world's greatest aviators, chuck yeager. his wife took to twitter to announce his death last night. in 1947 he traveled at nearly 700 miles an hour in an experimental aircraft flying faster than the speed of sound. his flight helped pave the way for the country's superiority in military design. he was featured in the book and the movie "the right stuff." chuck yeager was 97 years old. coming up on the "cbs morning news" now, what an intruder was doing when he was found in tom brady's mansion in massachusetts. colonel sanders like you've never seen him before. a new lifetime movie features the kfc ambassador. this is the "cbs morning news."

the trump administration complied with a federal judge's order and restored the obama era daca program. it shields hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants who came to the u.s. as minors from deportation. the trump administration ended the program in 2017 saying it was unconstitutional. the department of homeland security says it is now accepting new applications and renewal requests. an intruder was arrested at tom brady's home and new developments in a football harassment investigation. those are some of the headlines on the morning newstand. the washington post reports an nfl investigation into alleged sexual harassment involving the washington football team. uncovered a confidential settlement from a decade ago. the details and names of those involved have not been made public. court records reveal an emergency motion filed yesterday show that the team owner, daniel

snider, plans to intervene in a legal dispute where details of the settlement can become public. the richmond times dispatch says two of breonna taylor's aunts watched as governor northam ceremoniously signed a bill banning no knock warrants. northam formally signed the bill in october making virginia the third state with such a ban. none of the officers involved in the raid has been directly charged with taylor's death. >> we are so grateful and honored for these gestures and these laws, but let us not forget that breonna taylor still needs justice. >> the virginia law prohibits police from going into a home without first announcing themselves. it goes into effect in march. "the boston globe" reports police arrested a homeless man

our our top stories this morning. health officials in the u.k. started administering the first doses of the widely tested pfizer vaccine today. the first shot went to mark ret keenan, a grandmother who turns 91 years old next week. the u.s. could grant approval for pfizer later on this week. chuck yeager, the u.s. air force pilot who became the first person to break the sound barrier has died. he broke the sound barrier when he tested the bell x 1 in october of 1947. the fete was not announced to the public until the following year. yeager was 97 years old. today marks 40 years since one of the greatest tragedies in
