i'm anne-marie green. today is a historic day in the fight against the coronavirus. as we take an important step in the return to normalcy. the vaccines are expected to be given out today in the united states to front line health workers. you can see the first shipments of the pfizer vaccine arriving in kentucky yesterday. they are expected to arrive in 145 distribution centers today. debra alfarone is in washington. what can we expect to see? >> you can expect health care workers to be first. some states are ready to go. other states are receiving shipments and will ready to go with vaccinations by this afternoon. >> the first boxes rolled out of pfizer's plant yesterday. this ups plane took the first batch to kentucky. hanna helped unload the

shipment. >> it feels like i can finally do something about these problems instead of just staying at home, it feels great. >> health care workers are expected to start receiving vaccinations today. >> it's our moon shot. our generations man on the moon. to think of it any other way is to do it a disservice. >> pfizer will ship 2.9 million doses this week. >> the primary emotion i feel is hope, which is something we haven't felt in months. >> that comes amid the pandemic darkest days of hospitalizations and more than 2,000 deaths a day. >> we are seeing hopeful signs around the nation but you are seeing accelerations in the east coast and west coast. >> yesterday, california reported more than 30,000 new cases and more than triple than one month ago. >> it has been ramping up over the past couple of weeks and more quickly over the past

several days. >> starting today in new york city, indoor dining is banned as the city tries to slow the spread. >> in virginia, they will have a curfew there. between midnight and 5:00. those vaccinations will take a long time before there is any affect on this. it will take until the summer for most people who want the vaccine to be able to get it,. we'll speak more about the pfizer roll out. should be an interesting conversation. vaccinations have been under way more than a week in the uk. elizabeth palmer has those details. >> this was the first shot in

chinese sinovax is under way. this load arriving in indonesia which saw the highest number of covid deaths this week. russia is sharing its sputnik vaccine. it arrived in serbia and is in trial in brazil where they had one of the worst infection rates on earth. this is what the beginning of the end of the pandemic looks like but it will be a long slow haul. reporting for cbs news, london. today, a bipartisan group of senators will release the details of a covid-19 relief bill split into two pieces. one $748 billion bill which includes money for vaccine distribution and loans for small businesses. billion bill for money for governments with a temporarily liability shield. the senate majority leader mcconnell said he would sign the

bill without the latter. while democrats say the money for states and cities is their top priority. members of the electoral college will cast their official ballots today for the president. a key step in formalizing the victory for joe biden. still president trump said he will push forward with plans to overturn the results. former republican new jersey governor called mr. trump's legal efforts an absurdity. >> the same reason the court is not taking this, it is a lack of evidence. >> the latest cbs poll finds 62% of americans say the election is over and settled. about 79% of trump supporters say it should still be contested. the u.s. government is looking into a major cyber attack impacting

the treasury and commerce. experts say russia could very likely be behind it. nancy chen has more. >> commerce department confirmed one of its bureaus was breached. the department asked the government's cyber security and security agency and the fbi to investigate. the hackers are believed to have exploited the vulnerability and widely used service software called solar winds. issuing a statement it is cooperating with the fbi and u.s. intelligence and the investigation. it says it is aware of the potential vulnerability related to software updates between last march and june. the company's president and ceo said they believe the company is part of a highly sophisticated targeted and manual supply chain

complains of harassment. and a shooting outside a new york city cathedral. a report of a gunman shot by police. he started firing just as an outdoor christmas concert was sending at st. john the divine. about 200 people were outside. people inside left the church with their arms raised. >> he made his way up. that's where he sort of appear. we have multiple witnesses in the scene of the shots fired and telling our detectives he was yelling, kill me. >> investigators found two semiautomatic guns at the scene and found a bag containing gas owe lean, knives, rope, wire and a bible. no one else was hurt. new york times is reporting on the death of john le curre.

who died on saturday in england. a real british spy who became a novelist known for "tinker, tailor, soldier, spy. he was 89 years old. a former aid to new york governor cuomo is accusing him of sexual harassment. in a series of tweets yesterday, the 36-year-old lindsay said he harassed her for years when she was an economic development aid and said she has no interest talking to journalists. a spokesperson for the governor denied the allegations. cuomo is under consideration to be attorney general to the biden administration. still ahead, breaking another barrier. we'll show you how sara fuller made history once again in college football. sara fuller made history once again in college football.

like the rest of america, investors are watching for the first roll out of the vaccine. wall street will keep an eye on a slew of data along with the federal reserve's final policy of the year. stocked ended last year mixed. dow gained 47, nasdaq fell 27 and the s&p slipped 4. astrazeneca struck a $39 billion deal to buy alexea. approving the acquisitions which is the largest deal of the year. they are one of the companies involved in the efforts to roll out a covid-19 vaccine. tesla is reportedly shutting temporary ary production of model x and s for christmas eve.
