good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. a wintery snowstorm is hammering the east coast affecting some 70 million people. some places might get up to two feet of snow. so far there are at least two snow related deaths. in pennsylvania, a man was hit by a plow truck and north carolina, a driver died after going off the road. there was a 19-car pile up in new york city last night. at least six people went to the hospital. tom hanson is in new york. the storm has caused a lot of damage. >> that is correct, this powerful nor'easter dumped powerful snow and winds. were expecting more of that as we head into the morning hours. many places like here in new york city, this is the biggest storm we have seen in years.

paramedics in western pennsylvania were checking on a minor accident when a truck nearly missed everyone after losing control on the snowy road. the snow knocked out power to thousands and caused accidents for many up and down the east coast. >> if you don't need to be out, stay home. >> for many, this also was the first heavy snowfall since the coronavirus began. >> i've been in my apartment for like seven months now, what's another day? >> in new york city, indoor dining has shut down. many restaurants have outdoor setups that snowplow truck drivers have been trained to work around. >> our operators will go slowly and do their best to control their speed. >> the city received more snow from this storm than all last winter. >> i didn't think it was going to come down this crazy. schools will be doing remote learning but others have taken the snow day.

west virginia schools emailed parents to say, this is one thing our kids won't lose this year. children in philadelphia didn't lose the opportunity to play last night. >> really fun going down the hill, it was amazing. >> state and local officials have made adjustments to make sure the shipments of the vaccine continue despite the storm. this is a critical time in the coronavirus pandemic. we just began distributing the first vaccine in the u.s. days ago amid a surge in cases. experts like health and human services secretary alex azar do not expect a disruption due to the storm. >> that is some good news. tom hanson in the city. thank you. stay warm, if you can.

it could be a second shot of hope. a panel of experts is expected to vote today whether to authorize the moderna vaccine. it is said to be 94% effective against the virus. right now, front line workers and nursing home residents are receiving the pfizer vaccine. some of our nation's leaders will be rolling up their own sleeves for a shot. >> nursing homes in florida have started to receive the vaccine. >> residents of long-term care are more susceptible to negative out comes. >> front line workers from coast to cost continue to get the first dozes of the vaccine. >> didn't even feel it. >> a shot in the arm offers relief in the battle against the virus. >> we hope the overwhelming percentage will accept the vaccine. if we do that, we would get a veil or umbrella of herd

immunity. >> vice president mike pence, second lady pence and jerome adams are set to receive the vaccine publicly at the white house and president-elect joe biden is expected to get it as early as next week. new promise for a second vaccine. an fda advisory panel has confirmed the safety and efficacy of one produced by moderna which could be approved for emergency use as early as friday. >> as the roll out continues, hospitals in the northeast scramble to get shipments ahead of today's major winter storm. these health care workers rolled up their sleeves and tried to build confidence in the vaccine. >> you have to do their own research but not to be afraid of the vaccine. >> central and southern california, nearly 90% of icu beds are full. the governor is putting more mobil morgues on stand by and

sending another 5,000 body bags to hot spots around the state. reporting for cbs news, new york. a health care worker in alaska was hospitalized after a serious reaction to the pfizer vaccine. we are told she felt flush, short of breath and elevated heart rate after getting the shot yesterday. she was treated. she did not have a history of allergies but is now okay. >> lawmakers appear close to striking a deal on coronavirus relief package. top democrats and republicans are working on a $900 billion deal. it would revive subsidies for businesses hit hard by the pandemic, help distribute new vaccines and renew jobless benefits set to expire next week and looking to approve new direct payments of $600 to americans. they are very close to a deal.

>> president-elect joe biden formally selected pete buttigieg. to lead the transportation department. he praised the leader from indiana as a new voice. with new ideas determined to move past old politics. buttigieg says he's ready to take on the role noting its significance. >> newer generations have a lot at stack in infrastructure that must contemplate the immediate and long term. the question of how america will look by the middle of this century, the competitiveness of our economy, the security of our climate. for me, this isn't academic, it is personal. >> buttigieg would be the first openly guy man to be confirmed by the senate to the cabinet. the u.s. is reportedly planning new charges of the 1988 bombing of a pan am jet over scotland.
