b.c. not sure how old he is. pretty old. >> you look good at 39/40. we recorded parts of this broadcast in the days leading up to this holiday. right now let's head to the newsroom to check this morning's headlines. they are live there. >> good morning. merry christmas. i'm jamie yuccas. officials now say they believe a massive explosion in downtown nashville, tennessee, this christmas morning was an intentional act. you can see the aftermath here. fire, heavy smoke and multiple damaged buildings. the blast was linked to a parked vehicle of some kind. the fbi is investigating, along with local police. there are no reports yet of any injuries. the cdc announced new rules to fight a new strain of the coronavirus found in england. starting monday, anyone flying to the u.s. from the uk must show they've tested negative for covid-19 within 72 hours of

departure. it's also an uncertain christmas financially for millions of americans with unemployment benefits set to run out tomorrow. congress did pass a covid relief bill this week, but president trump opposes it. paula reid is near mar-a-lago where the president is spending christmas. a very merry christmas to you. thanks for working. >> good morning. merry christmas to you, too, jamie. that stimulus bill was flown down here to florida for the president to sign, if he wants to. but he's previously threatened to veto the bill unless payments to individuals are tripled. and yesterday house republicans rejected an effort by democrats to increase those payments from $600 to $2,000. and now members of both parties are just calling on the president to sign the bill as is. yesterday the president and the first lady released a holiday video, but made no mention of the economic relief. but the president did refer to the coronavirus vaccine as a, quote, christmas miracle.

now while the president is down here in florida, he has no official events on his calendar, though it does say he'll be taking meetings and calls, but the white house has not provided any information about who he'll be talking with or what they'll be talking about. and yesterday the only time we saw the president publicly was when his motorcade pulled into his golf club down here. today, jamie, we do not expect to see the president. >> all right, paula, thank you. a storm system packing torrential rain and damaging winds is hitting the east coast this christmas day. forecasters are warning of heavy snow and flooding from tennessee to maine. people in the upper midwest and the plains are digging out after getting buried by the system. blizzard conditions and icy roads made travel there extremely dangerous. multiple car accidents were reported, including a crash in nebraska that killed

a time for families to gather, honor traditions and exchange gifts, but for many this christmas will look a little different. still, a gallup poll found 93% of americans are expected to celebrate christmas in some way today. >> i sure hope so. in another recent survey, 60% of adults say they just feel overwhelmed by the number of issues the country is facing. understand that, too. bishop t.d. jakes is senior pastor of the ports house. a 30,000-member church in dallas. welcome and merry christmas to you, bishop jakes. >> thank you. it's a real pleasure to be with you. thanks for having me. >> we're so glad you're here. i think you are one of the most optimistic people i know and smartest thinkers i know. it's perfect you're here with us on this christmas morning. 2020 has been a really rough year. social upheaval, economic upheaval, health upheaval. yet, i've heard you say you are still optimistic and you still have hope. please share. >> yes, i think it's very, very

important that we remain optimistic because of the challenges that we faced in the vicissitudes of the past year, but this year in particular has been particularly devastating. that gives us a reason to celebrate our own survival that we made it through it, that we're still here. we have more reason to celebrate than we ever had before because we've never been this challenged as we are right now. so to celebrate that you're still here, whether you have a lot of gifts or a few gifts to celebrate that you have endured, and i know that there are people who have lost loved ones and that sort of thing. and that's a very painful thing to go through. but god still has a purpose and a plan for your life and you have to explore it and live your life to the fullest. that is your gift to the people you lost. >> bishop, you believe the challenges of 2020 are actually making us more connected than ever before. how so?

>> well, we're more grateful. we're more appreciative. we're more polite. we've learned not to take our loved ones and our friends for granted. we're checking on each other more. we're more concerned about each other. and i think that we've gotten back to what really matters. we were carried away with so many temporal things and now we're learning to latch on to the intangible values of family and love and god and life itself. >> bishop, all this separation may make us value our family even more this christmas, even if we're still apart. but at the same time, there is divisiveness in the country like we have not seen in decades, really. people can measure it. they say the polarization is very extreme. how do we fix that in the year to come? >> i think it's going to take time. you know, whenever there's a laceration, healing takes time. you can't instantly heal, and i think the lacerations have been

so deep that we have to give ourselves time to heal. and we're going to heal one on one. we're going to heal in elevators, on the sidewalks. we're going to heal in the way that we treat people that we can't label. what we're really upset about is labels. not people. and when you actually meet people outside of their label, you find out there's more to unite us than there is to divide us. >> you know, this is the first holiday for a lot of people where there is that empty chair at the table. i often find when you lose someone, the first holidays, that first year is always the hardest because you're going back to what it was like last year. but you say we have to get ahead of the grief. what do you mean by that, and how do you do that? >> when you see it's coming and you know that it's going to be tough and a certain place is going to be tough or a seat is going to be empty, change the game. rearrange things. break your tradition. go for a ride. take the family on a ride, go

skiing, do something that's out of your norm so that you're not sitting in the misery of yesterday. you have to create a new future and a new paradigm for you and your family. >> bishop, because of the holidays -- i'm sorry, because of the pandemic, so many people are having difficulty sort of trying to figure out how to celebrate this year. i've heard that from a lot of people. it's like they need the season but in some ways, they aren't quite sure how to embrace it. and, of course, a lot of people can't be with their families which is also very difficult. how do we celebrate, do you think? >> i think that it has to be a myriad of things. we have to take advantage of the technology that we have. we have to zoom and facetime and do all of the things that we can to be connected with people that we're far away from. but we also have to enlarge the understanding that being by ourselves doesn't mean that we can't be celebratory. to have some me time.

to do something for you. i think that's important also. >> what's your tradition of this day? i know you and your wife certainly have a tradition at the house. i hope it involves banana pudding. i will say that. he makes great banana pudding. i hope it involves that. >> yes, yes. everything involves food in our culture, you know how that is. when you're born, when you die, anything, we bring food. so there will be plenty of food. our problem is, there's more food than there are people to eat it, and that becomes a problem, but my kids, you know, the ones that are local, we will be connected and we normally have huge gatherings and bring all the college kids who couldn't get home and the people who lost loved ones, and we have huge gatherings on christmas. but this time, it will be much smaller, just our family. but we'll still have a good time. >> yeah, i think it's important that we figure out a way to do that. thank you very much, bishop t.d.

my parents own a meat locker and they are my frontline heroes because they've done so much during the pandemic. >> it wasn't an option to close. not in our eyes. he's got a whole crew of people down there that rely on him. they work their butts off. and it's hard work. i mean, they are pulling thousand pound beef and they don't complain. i don't know how he does it. it's been nonstop since march. it's what rural iowa is about. it's rough work. he gets up and does it every day and doesn't complain. >> my name is mandy. i'm from oklahoma. my frontline hero is my mother-in-law, vivian. she's 71 years old. she's diabetic. she has asthma. and then five years ago, became a single parent to her great, great nieces. any of these things could have prevented her from working her cashier job on the front lines during this pandemic, but it hasn't. my husband and i voiced our concerns to her regarding her working on the frontlines. her response was, i have the

girls to think of. so she's definitely an inspiration for myself and everybody that knows her. >> i'm not a hero. i'm doing what everybody else would do. i'm doing what thousands of people around this country does. you do what you have to do. but i'm not a hero. >> we call them essential workers. >> yeah. >> and the definition of essential, i think, it really has been redefined in people's minds. the people you count as the most important people in your day-to-day life, the pandemic has clarified that for a lot of people. >> exactly right. frontline heroes. frontline workers has a total different meaning. you can find them everywhere. and thank you again. > you may not have known your delivery worker, your teacher, those were frontline workers. they are, and they have been. >> they got us through. >> and they're still doing it. >> that's right. >> they're still doing it. much more news ahead, including christmas at the

quite the collab. your local news is next. good morning. it's 7:26. i am len kiese. bay area hospitals showing the strain from coronavirus cases. thursday ambulances took people away from el camino hospital in mountain view because it could not handle more patients in the emergency room. people in the bay area gathered for christmas eve mass with coronavirus restrictions in place. at divine mercy church in oakland a large parking lot was used to host an outdoor ceremony. delivering meals to homeless encampments. this is part of a yearly partnership between glide and the restaurant. taking a look at high def

doppler. the rain looks right off the coast but the showers will take a little bit time to get here, perhaps through late morning we see light showers across north bay. late morning into early afternoon, we'll see better organized bands of rain. by the time we get to late afternoon and rain starts to move through peninsula and south bay, there is not a lot left. we'll probably only get a tenth of an inch of rain. other locations, we'll see a half inch of rain in the north bay. there is your view. the top of the mark hopkins hotel to the west, a beautiful sunrise as clouds have made a wonderful palate. it not raining at this point. give it time and then expect most noticeable rain through the early afternoon today. another rainmaker gets here for the second half of the day sunday and that should rain

welcome back to "cbs this morning." it's christmas morning and i feel like i should have some speckles on, bifocals and a giant children's book and all the children from the whole town around my feet. >> we can sit at your feet if that would make you more comfortable. >> no, because everybody would be able to see your shoes, which are amazing. >> we have some newsyish pieces about christmas around the world. the pandemic has altered traditions all around the world including christmas in bethlehem. only a handful of people attended the annual tree lighting ceremony and fireworks in the city known as the birthplace of jesus. the preservation of life took priority, of course, as most events were shut down. normally thousands of tourists

would attend. and imtiaz tyab shows how the city is keeping the christmas spirit alive. >> reporter: bathed in the shimmery winter sunlight, all the trimmings of a holiday wonderland. while the tree is up and the ornaments are on, the crowds are missing. bethlehem's manger square is bracing itself for a christmas like no other. >> christmas will look a bit sad, but we know that maybe by praying, by raising up our voice to god that things will change and coronavirus will disappear. >> reporter: last year, this is what christmas was like in bethlehem. streets heaving with tourists and pilgrims from around the world, soaking up the festive cheer was jesus was born. but in march, the gates to the biblical city were slammed shut after the israeli occupied west bank's first major outbreak of covid-19 erupted here.

there have been over 65,000 cases in the palestinian territory and more than 620 deaths. resulting in strict lockdowns that have spelled doom for many of bethlehem's small businesses. >> people are afraid. in a city, you feel the spirit of the birth of jesus, but these days, you don't see any spirit. it's sad. >> reporter: the eerie silence isn't just on the streets. it's also in the churches. here at the church of the nat e nativity where it's believed jesus was born on this very spot, there are no crowds, no choir singing and just the precious few of the faithful. but for carmen who speaks for bethlehem's local government, it's an opportunity to get closer to the teachings of christ. >> this year we go to the essence of the christmas. we go inside ourselves. think about the spirit of christmas. the religious meaning of christmas. we think and we feel with our

that's brittany howard, the fabulous front woman of the blues rock band alabama shakes singing their hit "hold on." howard has won acclaim and four grammys for her work with the band. she's up for five more grammys next month for her first solo album nominated in four different genre categories. we spoke to her before the nominations were announced. these days, you're likely to find brittany howard knee deep in the elk river in southern tennessee. it's where we would have caught up with her if not for covid. >> i was really hoping to go fishing. >> i was really looking forward to taking you fishing. >> the alabama-born singer has become known for her other worldly presence on stage.

♪ howard was raised in athens, alabama, where the video for her song "stay high" was filmed. ♪ i just want to stay high with you ♪ >> kind of like the unofficial mayor. everybody knows it. everybody recognizes his laugh. big laugh. >> her dad ran a junk yard with her mom when brittany was growing up. when you started with the alabama shakes, you were actually still working delivering mail, right? >> that's right, yeah. working like a 13-hour day delivering mail and whatnot and then speeding over to rehearsal because i didn't want to miss rehearsal. it's my favorite thing in life. ♪ >> alabama shakes' debut album in 2012 immediately put them on the map.

and would sell more than a million copies. their follow-up went to number one and earned three grammys. but howard heard another voice within her, and in 2017, went out on her own. >> whether people believe it or not, it takes courage to do it because you have to be prepared to fail. you know, you also got to be prepared to succeed. ♪ >> howard's new music is her most vulnerable. georgia is a love song from one girl to another. >> i kind of wrote it from a perspective of like an innocent love and realizing when you're young that you're different. >> reporter: another song, goathead is a true story. about the harassment her parents faced as an interracial couple. >> but what i really want to

know is, who slashed my dad's tires and put a goat head in the back? >> a story they only shared with her years later. >> because my parents were trying to do a really good job of making me not fear where i live or the people that's around me. i didn't grow up that way. i didn't grow up in fear. >> during the pandemic, howard has had time to reflect. do you fieel like your voice is more important in this moment? >> i don't know. it seems like everybody is important. i've been blessed to have a life of duality. i've been impoverished and wealthy. i have a white side of my family and black side of my family. i'm gay. i've tried to be straight. tried to do all those things. it's blessed me with such an expensive knowledge of empathy. >> it's hard to find things to look forward to right now. what are you looking forward to? >> i look forward to catching my

good morning. five minutes before 9:00 this christmas day. i am anne makovec. an explosion tore through a city block in downtown nashville this morning shattering glass, damaging buildings, setting cars on fire. it happened at 6:30 local time. police are calling it an intentional act. so far, no word on suspects or a motive. at least three people are in the hospital with injuries though none is in critical condition. the fbi is taking the lead on that investigation. a dublin custodian is dead and another hospitalized from a possible fentanyl overdose. police say they found the powerful drug inside the library of fallon middle school but the family says they think a chemical used to spray the
