californians are facing a bleak start to the new year. a potential government shutdown with the president refusing to sign a new bill. hospitals are bracing for a new search concern this morning the new virus strain may have made it to california. a suspected suicide bomber as federal agents are looking for a person of interest under the rv explosion in nashville. good morning. let's start with a check of our mother. >> we are waiting for tonight's rain.

but since it isn't getting here until tonight let's not be valid most of your sunday is going to look like. it's just a few clouds today. the rain gets here after sunset and we have cold mornings coming up. going to show you just how cold here is an upcoming book into the late afternoon and early evening. we still haven't seen the rain yet. you can see them sitting out here. they are going to be focused in the south bay and arrived when we get to the evening tonight by about 10:00 a.m. it is raining. then, as we go into the overnight hours, here we are, that rain has rotated back up into the north bay. we continue to see scattered showers develop until he gets in the late morning tomorrow. not a lot of this. i will say those rainfall totals coming up and a look at why this potential storm is a

bit more of a concern for those burn scars. back over to you. a live look at capitol hill. emergency unemployment benefits expired overnight. they report on the anxiety that many jobless people are feeling during the pandemic. >> the wait for another round of checks continues for millions. for those who have seen the bank of america unemployment benefits account drain. even more frustrating. >> how much was taken out? >> widen $9000. >> he says he still waiting for a resolution. >> i spend hours on the phone. >> being my predicts 750,000 will stop receiving benefits by the end of the month. the federal stimulus approved

would add $300 per week to unemployment benefits. >> it cushions the blow and is positive in terms of californians. but this is going to have very limited impact for new hiring. >> part of the package includes 285 billion that provides forgivable loans for struggling small businesses. >> it is additional layoffs. i don't think that until we have the vaccination widely. until we have the lockdowns lifted, until people are confident we aren't going to see that uptake. >> one of the major differences is in the third round those who have already borrowed to take out a second loan. nancy pelosi has scheduled a houseful to increase payments from $600-$2000. a play that they support.

>> developing this morning, dna testing carried out on human remains in nashville. law enforcement sources say the leading periods that the suspect may have been killed in that explosion. jeff has the latest on the investigation. >> federal agents raided the home in connection with the explosion. they have identified him as anthony warner. this image shows an rv behind the wooden fence matching the description of the vehicle that exploded in nashville and the directorate said that one had a similar rv and the google street view shows an rv park in the yard of the home. part of the downtown area remains a crime scene. >> it's like a giant jigsaw puzzle that those pieces of

evidence across city blocks. >> they have been able to trace their movements. on friday, it was at the intersection of veterans boulevard and second avenue south. at 5:28 a.m., a 911 call reported that shots were fired in the area. later there was another call from somebody telling that the recording was saying a bomb is going to explode. when police arrived on the scene the rv was spotted outside of the at&t building. they noticed blinds and clothes covering the window. shortly thereafter, the warning of an imminent bomb started coming through the streets. >> this is an explosive device. >> after the blast they say that shell casings were found

at the scene. perhaps that off by the large explosion. or leads for investigators to follow along with about 500 text. >> a possible motive may be tied to the at&t building the other side of that explosion. they are looking into whether any threats were made against the company. now to the latest on the coronavirus with the coronavirus infection smashing records there is new fear. california has confirmed 30,000 new cases 36 additional deaths and nearly 20,000 patients in the hospital within 4000 in the intensive care. the surge in cases is prompting to postpone nonurgent surgeries until the new year these procedures will be delayed to january fourth. at facilities across northern california. in a statement they say that

the command centers continue to monitor the situation to ensure that we have the resources, capacity, and staff to care for the rapidly increasing patients. >> they are concerned about a new virus. the governor says there's no new confirmed cases but los angeles county is starting to test what. it requires them to show a negative test 72 hours before the departure. they believe the new variant is more contagious but there is no evidence that it's any deadlier. the good news is they believe that the vaccines will work against them. >> it seems to be more contagious the severity of the disease from somebody who gets it is about the same as people who are all older who have those core morbidities including diabetes and a high risk of needing oxygen and going to the hospital.

5.5 magnitude earthquake struck turkey. it was just under 10 miles deep. it happened in the same area which was struck by 6.8 earthquake in january. that killed 39 people. a live look at oakland one of the places where the pandemic is having an odd side effect on the housing market. donlon reports on the upward trend that nobody saw coming. >> the common belief is that the pandemic would cause housing market to collapse. 10 months in, the prices have changed. >> they reported in october the

median price $1.34 million. is 16.5% more than last year. san francisco has the same medium price $1.57 million. almost a 10% jump. but a much smaller gain due to the slowing demand. let's go across the bay. this association reports the median price for single-family homes is $810,000. that is a 27% increase compared to last year. in alameda county, a 15% increase. it may surprise some people. oakland's price hit $1 million. david stark explains who is by during the pandemic. >> the fact that you can work

from home and you don't have to deal with the commute is making the east bay even more desirable. this pandemic hasn't impacted everyone equally. >> they say many of those buyers had been largely on impacted. >> working from home makes them realize that they need more space. >> another big factor is low interest rates giving people more buying power. the inventory remains low. >> everybody wants to know, what's the outlook up or down? they say it all depends on the interest rates. federal policies and how quickly the economy recovers. they don't proceed across a crash. >> realtors say unlike single- family homes condos have drops in prices. the wet weather is causing some concern in the santa cruz

mountains. they are worried about how the burn scar will hold up to heavy rain. they are worried that rain could cause debris flows which may endanger entire homes. fire crews raised the alarm in september before the 86,000 fire was contained. >> there was significant potential for the debris flows in those areas. we have developed its own specific to those areas and we have notified the public and there is an application that the community has been made aware of where they can go and look for the specific zone if they are impacted by it. >> they released a map for areas under the hazard advisory. however, it could change with the weather. let me show you by there be more concerned. i showed you the futurecast for tonight's drain at the top of the newscast. has the rain coming in after sunset raining overnight.

i just want to go back to the again and put this into perspective. all of the red outlines showing you the fires from just this year. the one right here that is the fire that burned through the santa cruz mountains. as they played this ahead, there was something unique about the way that the rain is coming into northern california. it's coming in from the southwest which means it's heating the face of that hat on. which means it's got to rise up to get over it. that's what forces these clouds to drop more rain. watch this direction coming in from the southwest. rainfall totals will be a little bit heavier. because of the direction but also because the storm wants to bring most of its rain not only to the south bay but really further south than that. this is going to be focused on big sur and down into southern california. here is one more review.

this is until we get past 11:00 p.m. that we are seeing that rain. there's a lot more the storm that goes down. however, into the overnight hours, it is able to throw rain into the heart of the bay. we get a few light showers. we may even see some light rain developing over the north bay. if we look at those rainfall totals. from sunset tonight for about sunrise tomorrow, there really isn't a whole lot here. couple hundreds of an inch. and then, as we come down into the south bay will notice the numbers are higher rate here. specifically the numbers right here in the santa cruz mountains. we could see as much as a quarter of an inch of rain. which is a reversal of fortunes. usually it's the south bay getting left out. but the storm is a different kind of pack. as far as these morning lows,

we are already pretty much down into the morning hours. this will be into the upper 50s. that's today. the concern for temperatures isn't so much for those highs. we will show you how we are going to bottom out by tuesday and wednesday morning. to go along with the idea, the snow develops in the south and it works its way north. it just looks weird if you're used to looking at the accumulation map. we had about four inches of snow here. we will get enough of this down to the lake level. about southlake. we will also see snow to about 5000 feet as you're driving up on 8450 means of this will have an impact on the drive for anyone going into the cr. daytime highs staying in the upper 50s the next few days. morning lows on tuesday and wednesday. those will be the two coldest days of the week. see morning lows getting into the upper 20s.

let's start with a check of our weather. >> is going to be the clouds today. it doesn't rain until after sunset in late tonight. so, for today you will notice a few clouds. the rain after sunset and when that storm clears out we are going to see morning lows getting pretty cold for parts of the bay area. i will see that in detail. but let me give you the overview. here we are past 10:00 p.m. tonight. this is the showers slowly working their way up towards the rest of the bay area. most of this is falling in the south bay. this will come late sunday night and into monday morning. most of us will sleep through it and not even notice it. when i shave the rainfall totals you will see why many of us may not even notice it. we have a huge spread in the

numbers once again from our cold spot at 37 will be seeing lows of about 10 degrees colder than that. by the time we get to tuesday and wednesday morning. but for the rest of the bay area this is our cold spot. see what the rest of this forecast is doing. a live look a capitol hill. uncertainty continues over the fate of a spending bill which includes $900 billion in coronavirus relief. congress passed it after months of negotiation. so far president trump is refusing to sign it. he repeated his demand that relief checks be increased from $600-$2000. now the delay is increasing the chances of a government shutdown starting on tuesday morning. it's also causing an interruption in federal programs that expand unemployment benefits for millions of people. >> we have people calling us and

we don't know where it's going to come. the safest thing to do is to continue to file. if you are blocked from filing take a picture of that message as proof that you tried to file. >> a left-leaning think tank estimates 12 main americans are now losing their jobless benefits. stomach to the coronavirus, a firefighter was diagnosed with the coronavirus in july. as melissa reports, months later he is still dealing with the long-term impacts of the virus. >> extreme body aches, fatigue, nausea, i couldn't keep anything down, >> it was early july when the sacramento firefighter was diagnosed with the coronavirus. fighting a 103 degrees fever he spent two weeks isolated in his trailer alone away from his family. >> just walking to my front yard. >> he lost 25 pounds in two weeks and months later he still feeling lingering symptoms. >> that includes not having

>> that was marissa perlman reporting. he still has no data on when he will be able to return. right now he is working on providing testing at senior care facilities across the area. authorities are investigating multiple homicides. they found the bodies of five females. at a home on christmas day. it is northwest of little rock. the youngest victim was just eight years old. they say the suspect is among the dead. in illinois three people are dead and three others are injured. it happened in rockford. about 80 miles northwest of chicago. they believe it was a random attack. a person of interest has been taken into custody. a bizarre crime where they say a man dressed in a donald trump mask shot a 77-year-old former brother-in-law yesterday. it happened on manchester avenue. he was hit twice but he will be okay.

they spotted the 75 suspect trying to drive away. they blocked the road. there is nowhere to on the motive. >> doesn't gather this weekend to mark two years since the k-9 officer was gunned down in the line of duty. the group gathered to remember the life of the corporal who was an immigrant from fiji and had been an officer for seven years. investigators say that he was shot during a traffic stop. he was arrested in bakersfield after a two-day manhunt. stomach still to come, how a bay area resident stepped up and hoped to save a much beloved piano. >> hoping to retrain police in the bay area. the usual gifts are just not going to cut it.

one in five young people on the spectrum are expected to have some kind of contact with law enforcement before they turn 21. >> it's not always obvious that people have autism. >> using the video they explained that some on the spectrum can go to school or work but others may not speak or be able to take care of themselves. often they may not follow social rules. >> like personal space. >> it can lead to miscues or misunderstandings. >> because of the training and now clicks in your head. possibly this is somebody who's on the spectrum. >> they even had been visiting the center to foster connections and cooperations. >> sometimes we have hundred on our campus interacting with their students and clients. it's a great way to explain to my students that these are people who are here to help. >> he says the training equips them to recognize and react to

department how to keep our homes safe when using heaters. >> traditionally, a lot of families will have a holiday treat. it's usually been up for 30 days. or more. that's going to impact how it is. it's going to take a dry christmas tree or a holiday tree. you have a space heater. because it's cold in san francisco. especially during december. that heater, let's say really this is how far away from the tree it is. that's it. the radiant heat, the heat that's coming off of that heater can actually cause the tree to a wrapped into flames from that heat transfer. so, we are asking to try to move the tree as soon as possible. if you are in san francisco, they will pick up your trees are free. that is our garbage and

my cat. it's my dog. whatever it is. so, their family members. we want to make sure that they are safe and secure. >> the lieutenant says that you should remove decorations as soon as you can because they can be a choking hazard. we have rain coming in later tonight. really not until we get past sunset. today you're just going to see clouds out there. but you'll be able to tell the clouds are increasing. daytime highs will climb into the middle and upper 50s. but for right now it's cold. we are in the 30s. it is 40 in livermore and oakland sitting at 46 right now. it is a cozy 50. let's timeout the rain. sunset the first line of showers works its way into the santa cruz mountains. then the rest of the south bay. by the time we got into the predawn hours we are seeing rain in the north bay.

by sunrise it is gone. in the north bay is not going to rain a lot. you'll pick up only a few hundredths of an inch of rain from that. it will happen while he was sleeping. you probably won't even notice this at all. this look at the rain gauge down here in santa cruz mountains. about a half an inch of rain. and in san jose, because of the direction and the nature of the storm, you should do better with the sun. but it's still not going to be that. you get 2/10 of an inch of rain. you can see the east bay. coming in around 2/10 of an inch of rain. snow coming up from the south looks a little weird. but that's what happens when the storm originates and throws the snow back over his shoulder let's come in for a closer look at tahoe. we will pick up about three inches of snow at the pass. snow gets as low as the emigrant gap. if you've never taken that gap. that's where you will hit that at about 5000 feet. a little less than an inch in

the tahoe basin. truckee gets about two inches of snow and you can see what it looks like in the tahoe basin on a closer look. let's talk about these morning lows. at 34 this morning for santa rosa, that's not all that bad. now, look at tuesday and wednesday. the reason why this is the coldest is because by that point, whatever cloud cover we've got is gone. monday morning we still have plenty of clouds maybe even a chance for a sprinkle in the coldest parts of the night. but on tuesday, with no clouds, cold air being dragged in by the storm, that's the mornings you're going to feel the cool down. let me say the other side of the spectrum. the average morning low is 42. and we're pretty much in that neighborhood for today and tomorrow. then on tuesday, it gets colder. middle to upper 30s. not nearly as bad as the north bay. but, still cold enough that you will notice a change. here is a seven-day forecast. the daytime highs even warming

up to the lower 60s. got the clouds here. there is a small chance for wednesday the second half of the day thursday morning. we may pick up a few light showers. that it just doesn't look like the most impressive system at this point. we will keep a closeeye on that and we will have updates on that chance. as we get closer to it. >> so, you said that we would have some sunshine when that storm moved through. you are true to your word. it was really beautiful. is it going to be kind of cloudy today? leading up to the rain this evening? >> the later we get in the day obviously the more you will notice the clouds. but there still should be points of the day particularly through the late morning. where you will see a few more breaks of those blue skies. >> last that was the first night of kwanzaa. heritage and family. >> is a mac san francisco
