been looking forward to for months, the start of a new year. celebrations took place around the globe, but instead of the usual packed crowds, there were largely empty streets due to the pandemic. naomi ruchim is in new york city's times square. what does it look like at the crossroads of the world now? >> reporter: well, diane, now that many of the barricades have come down, there have been a few small groups of people coming to check out the party that was last night. an unusual beginning to a new year. the party did go on, though, despite the barricades. and despite the smaller crowds. confetti and all, for a broadcast audience. now many folks telling us they are ready to close the book on 2020. from sydney, australia, to athens, greece, the world bid good riddance to 2020. >> i just want to say good-bye to being bored at home. >> reporter: and welcomed 2021 with optimism. >> it is getting off my butt and finally doing a lot of things i've been telling myself i'm going to do for years.

2021 is the year to go do it. >> reporter: midnight celebrations around the world were scaled back due to coronavirus restrictions. with some city centers void of any revelers. in new zealand, the party went on like any other year, after the country successfully kept the virus under control. >> we did the right things. now we can celebrate. >> reporter: more than a million people typically cram in to new york's times square to watch the crystal ball drop. however, this year, only a small number of frontline workers were allowed into the area. ♪ new york >> reporter: the ball dropped without a hitch and new yorkers are looking ahead to better days. >> stamp this virus out and get on with our lives. >> reporter: with a record 125,000 americans currently hospitalized due to covid-19, the pandemic is far from over. >> we do not have enough healthcare workers. >> reporter: pulmonologist dr. aaron millstone hopes 2021 didn't kick off with super spreader events. >> if you go to a large new year's party, it is highly

likely somebody at that new year's party is going to be infected. >> reporter: in wuhan, china, where reports of the coronavirus first came out on new year's eve 2019, masked revelers crowded together and released balloons as the clock hit midnight. and the handful of people invited to come watch live last night included an er doctor, a schoolteacher, a grocery store worker and a pizza delivery driver. truly some of the real heroes of 2020. one small piece of silver lining here today as well, with smaller crowds, a lot less to clean up, diane, which as you can probably hear and see behind us, they're working on right now. >> yes, indeed. >> reporter: happy new year to you. >> i can hear the cleanup happening behind you. happy new year. naomi ruchim in times square. >> reporter: thank you. >> thank you. a variant of the covid-19 virus has shown up in another state. florida has become the third state to report the new

contagious strain first seen in the uk. in a tweet last night, the florida health department said the virus was detected in a man in his 20s, with no history of travel. it is now working with the cdc to investigate the case. meantime, three more cases of the new coronavirus strain have popped up in california. it has now become the third state to pass 25,000 covid-19 deaths. in los angeles county, many funeral homes are filled to capacity. and healthcare professionals feel as if they're under siege. here is carter evans. >> reporter: hospitals in southern california are at the breaking point, with one in five covid tests coming back positive. >> it is just utter chaos. >> reporter: this nurse runs the er in anaheim global medical center where even the outdoor tents are filling up. >> it is a war zone where we have ambulance run after ambulance run. >> reporter: and hospitalizations are on track to double in january. how can l.a. hospitals handle

twice as many patients? >> the simple answer is we can't. >> reporter: los angeles mayor eric garcetti put it in blunt terms. >> people will die in the hallways of our hospitals. our behavior will dictate whether people live or die as much as any actions a hospital takes. >> reporter: and for garcetti, the pandemic is now personal. >> our own daughter, she went on a fast food run and one shopping run, she got positive covid-19 test and she did everything right and still it came to our house. >> reporter: carter evans, cbs news, los angeles. meantime, a milwaukee area hospital pharmacist was arrested for allegedly deliberately ruining hundreds of doses of the moderna coronavirus vaccine. police say the unidentified pharmacist removed the vials from a refridtgeratorefrigerato sit out, and put them back in last week. it was enough to inoculate almost 600 people. there was no word on a motive.

dozens of people who received the ineffective vaccine have been notified. vice president mike pence is asking a federal judge to reject a lawsuit filed by a group of republicans that would give pence the authority to overturn the presidential election results. next wednesday, pence will oversee congress when it meets to certify the electoral college votes declaring joe biden the winner. the suit allows pence to ignore the electoral votes of several states where republicans falsely claim there was voter fraud. pence argues he is not the right person to sue over the issue. there is new video of a hotel confrontation in new york city. a woman falsely accused a black teenager of stealing her phone. she is talking about the incident for the first time. here is jamie yuccas with more. >> reporter: the newly released video shows the woman tackling 14-year-old keyon harrold jr. in the hotel lobby. >> you see two black people -- >> i'm not letting you walk away with my phone. >> reporter: the day after christmas accusation was false.

she actually left it in an uber, the driver returned it a short time later. >> that's mine. give it back. >> are you kidding me? >> reporter: grammy winning musician keyon harrold filmed the incident as he tried to protect his son, all playing out in the new york hotel where he and his son were guests. >> we literally were coming downstairs, to have brunch. >> reporter: cnn says the woman claimed she was attacked and hasn't apologized for the false claim. the family wants her charged with assault. >> no 14-year-old boy should be scared and threatened. they shouldn't have to feel scared or feel like they're threatening anybody. >> reporter: jamie yuccas, cbs news, new york. georgia senator david perdue is in quarantine just five days before his senate runoff election. his campaign said perdue and his wife learned they came in close contact with a staffer who tested positive for covid-19. they're both doing fine and have tested negative so far.

espn reports the nba will require players, coaches and other team personnel to wear contact tracing sensors. starting thursday, they will have to wear sensors during all team activities outside of games including while traveling. the sensors do not record gps locations, they will activate when someone comes within six feet of another person wearing one. those not wearing the sensors are subject to unspecified discipline. the associated press says back pain caused pope francis to skip new year's ceremony at the st. peter's basilica. a vatican spokesman said francis could not preside over last night's prayer service because of sciatica. the pope was also missing a new year's day mass. a cardinal read the pope's previously prepared new year's eve homily. francis encouraged the faithful trying to make sense out of 2020 to banish any idea that god is cynical and pitiless. still ahead, hanging up on anxiety. we'll tell you about a phone hot line that allows you to just scream.

here is a look here is a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. the first meteor shower of 2021 is happening tomorrow night. nasa says it will last about six hours. you'll have the chance to spot up to 200 meteors per hour. they'll be traveling at 25 miles per second. the best chance to view the shower will be in the predawn hours of sunday morning. you'll want to stay away from any bright city lights to see the show. on "the cbs moneywatch," investors are optimistic about 2021 and the hot line that lets you scream it all out in the new year. here is naomi ruchim.

>> markets are closed this new year's day as the world celebrates the start of 2021. 2020 is the year that will go down in economic history books as the pandemic delivered a crushing blow to the job market, and many businesses were forced to close. parts of the economy bounced back, though, with the stock market surging to record highs amid government relief programs and optimism surrounding a coronavirus vaccine. if your plans in 2021 involve a long overdue vacation, you may need a special kind of passport proving you're either vaccinated or have recently tested negative for covid 19. the commons project is teaming up with the world economic forum in geneva, switzerland, to launch an app called common pass, which would allow people to track their covid status and make sure it lines up with requirements for each country. airlines, airports and medical facilities around the world are all involved in the project. and perhaps the year gone by left you feeling so frustrated you could just scream.

with the covid curfew. the bar owner said the shoe must go on. here in the u.s., a new year means new laws. from drug prices to police reform, and even protecting the dead. chris martinez explains. >> reporter: as coronavirus cases keep spiking, some 2021 laws deal directly with covid-19. some give help to essential workers, others boost unemployment benefits or require time off for sick employees. one unusual measure in alabama encourages fist pumping rather than handshakes. several states are limiting monthly out of pocket insulin costs and washington state the cap is $100. in connecticut, diabetics with less than a week's worth of drugs and devices must be allowed a 30-day emergency supply with a price cap. oklahoma is expanding medicaid, to include some 215,000 low income residents starting in july. new jersey, arizona, montana, and south dakota all legalized

recreational marijuana. and in oregon, voters decriminalized the possession of small amounts of street drugs, including cocaine and heroin. those caught will avoid jail time. instead they'll pay a fine and attend an addiction recovery program. >> black lives matter. >> black lives matter. >> reporter: the death of george floyd in minneapolis prompted a ban on police chokeholds in states including california, delaware, iowa, new york, oregon, and utah. other laws create more oversight and reporting about police-involved incidents. georgia created a new crime to find as bias motivated intimidation, applying to the death or serious bodily injury of police, firefighters, and emergency personnel. georgia will also require an audit before movie and tv productions get the state's 30% tax credit. and even the dead are covered. under a new law in new york, in late may, anyone who dies there has the right of protected

publicity. chris martinez, cbs news. 2020 ended on an ugly note for tulsa and mississippi state in the armed forces bowl yesterday. >> bowl teams desperately trying to keep these teams apart. >> oh, yeah. look at that. those are -- >> both college football teams got into a fight after the game. players threw punches and kick as coaches tried to break it up. at least one player was treated for a possible concussion. it is unclear if anyone will be disciplined. the league plans to review the incident. the final episodes of "jeopardy" with alex trebek will air next week. all five episodes were taped in late october. trebek died in november of pancreatic cancer. he hosted more than 8,000 episodes dating back to 1984. the game show will continue airing new episodes starting january 11th with interim guest host ken jennings. coming up on "cbs this morning," we revisit gayle king's interview with superstar

our top stories this morning, florida is the third state to report a case of the new more contagious coronavirus strain first seen in the uk. in a tweet last night, the state health department said it was detected in a man in his 20s with no history of travel. the new strain has also been seen in colorado and california. and subdued new year's celebrations were held around the world without the usual packed crowds due to the pandemic. the streets were virtually empty in new york's times square as the iconic crystal ball dropped ringing in 2021. it is first time since 1904 that crowds have not been allowed to gather for new year's in times square.

with traditional new year's eve parties discouraged this year, many people most likely cracked open a cold one while celebrating at home. but some small beermakers are having trouble getting their brews on store shelves. danya bacchus explains why. >> reporter: business fizzled when the covid crisis hit. with less people buying beer in person, the southern california company started canning it. >> it is a new avenue that we never really thought would be there. >> reporter: many tap rooms and brew pubs have adopted the same sell strategy during the pandemic. the craft brewers including fulton brewery in minnesota now face another challenge. there is a limited supply of aluminum cans to put the beer in. >> a lot of other brewers, beverage companies are experiencing shortages. now we're looking at periods in the future where we know that we're going to be not able to have the container that we need to put the beer in. >> what we have seen is not necessarily a change in the

total level of beer consumption, but a huge shift in where people are drinking beer. they're drinking a lot less beer at bars and restaurants and they're buying a lot more from grocery stores, convenience stores and other package stores. that means that demand for beer packages, particularly cans, is really skyrocketed in recent months. >> reporter: barb watson says aluminum canmakers were facing high demand even before the pandemic. with many beverage companies switching from plastic to more environmentally friendly aluminum. that has places like barrel house z in massachusetts paying a premium. >> we paid through the nose to secure what you're seeing here, but this is about, you know, two, three months supply for us. >> reporter: can suppliers were working to open new manufacturing sites. but experts say the shortages will continue until the end of 2021 and possibly longer. danya bacchus, cbs news, los angeles. coming up on "cbs this morning," we revisit gayle king's interview with pop superstar katy perry as the singer opens up about motherhood and the importance of mental health.
