7:09 am
what should we be asking our doctor as we show up for the first time in maybe a year. >> you said it, tony. so many americans missed those important medical visits this past year. now is a great time to circle back with your primary care provider. i like to call them the quarterback of the team and really have a discussion about what important tests, particularly screening tests, things like mammograms and colonoscopies you need to catch up with. also talk about vaccinations and what you might be behind on and a great time to have a discussion with your primary about any questions you have about the covid vaccine. certainly patients who have any chronic medical conditions so cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, diabetes, you need to be in touch with your specialists who are managing you to make sure that you are on top of those conditions. i like to say that it's also a good time to take a medication inventory. so many people end up on medications that they're not sure why they're on them or maybe they're interacting with other drugs they're taking.

stressful for everyone. >> bravo. dr. narula, thank you. gayle, there you have it. most new year's resolutions are given up after about two weeks but dr. narula made it the whole year. and she had a good one, mindfulness. >> bravo. i can also suggest head space. calm is good but so is head space. during this pandemic, the impact of social distancing and stress have certainly taken a toll on many people's mental health. recent gallup poll shows americans' mental health is worse than at any point in the last two decades. we all get that. psychologist and cbs news contributor lisa de more joins us with how to better focus on our well-being and staying positive in 2021. lisa, really good to see you. we're talking a lot about polls today and one of the latest shows that many americans are just struggling to survive day-to-day. so how in the world do we concentrate on self-care when we're just trying to live? >> you know, it is hard. and happy new year to all of
7:13 am
you. what we want to do as an important new year's resolution is to commit to excellent self-care. and we have to recommit to this. and by excellent self-care we mean getting a good night's sleep, getting plenty of physical activity, eating well, finding happy distractions. and doing this goes a long way to buffer the stress of the pandemic. the challenge, of course, is the pandemic is going on so long that we can get kind of lazy about this. you know, it's easier to get in bed and just scroll on your phone than to have a disciplined routine that helps you fall asleep quickly at night. but the way i have come to think about it is it's like the pandemic is a really long rain storm and excellent self-care is like our rain gear. it helps to protect us from the pandemic. so getting out your umbrella, putting on your rain coat, rain boots, it doesn't stop the rain, but it makes the storm easier to weather. and that's how we want to think about self-care now. >> yeah, listen, it's a new year
7:14 am
but this pandemic is still very much alive and well, so to speak. you say that we should avoid an all or nothing way of thinking. what does that mean? >> so when we feel helpless about so many things in our lives, it's easy to start to feel helpless about everything. to start to feel like, if i can't have this go the way i want it to go it just can't happen. that's all or nothing thinking. and we want to steer clear of that. instead, what we want to do is to think about what we can make happen. so we can't celebrate birthdays in the ways that we like to, but we can still make them a special day. we can't see people in the same ways we want to, but we can still stay meaningfully connected. and it's important for us to acknowledge what has been disrupted to let ourselves be sad and frustrated about that. to do that work of kind of coming to terms of what we've had to give up and when we do that work, it actually creates space. it sort of sets the stage for us
7:15 am
to be open to what can happen. it lets us be creative. i think the way we should think about it is, it might not be great, but it can be good enough. >> you also say it's important to accept the reality that some things are just beyond our control. how do we do that, and why is that so very important to do? >> it's hugely important. especially in the pandemic. for us to really take account of what are the things in our control, maybe at work or at home or in terms of our own self-care, and what are the things that are beyond our control? how long the pandemic is going to last. what the summer is going to look like. and the way we can actually size this sup is to think that we wat to preserve our energy. the pandemic is stressful. the pandemic is tigering. we're going to be better off on sown many fronts, mental health included, mental health especially if we point our energy at the things we really have say, where we can really make a difference. and don't put too much energy
7:16 am
into worrying about or thinking about things where we really don't have control. >> also, i like the practice of expressing gratitude. i know that that really helps and makes a difference. i always think it's better to focus on what you do have rather than what you don't. can you just give people a sentence on why we need to do that on a regular basis? >> absolutely. having a gratitude practice, thinking about what you're grateful for, is one of the simplest and most effective ways we know in psychological research to increase well-being and life satisfaction. it is worth taking the time to focus on what you've got. >> all right. i wake up every day and say, breathing. that's gratitude number one. thank you, lisa damore. happy new year. >> thanks, gayle and lisa. i always feel calmer after hearing from lisa. now ways to improve our money habits after a challenging economic year. recent study found nearly 4 in 10 americans believe they'll be in financial survival mode in
7:17 am
2021. cbs news business analyst jill schlesinger joins us with some financial tips for the new year. happy new year. good morning. as i said, so many people are struggling right now. what can they do, what should they do to try to regain some financial control? >> well, happy new year to you, and i think the core concept we always stress is, number one, track where your money is going. you've got to account for what's coming in, what's going out, and that will allow you to prioritize your goals and objectives. now technology maybe makes it a easier. big banks all have apps that help you do this. there's clarity money. there's mint. this is important, whether you have a job, whether you're unemployed, you've got to understand where your condition lies and only by tracking your money will that allow you -- will you be able to do that. >> jill, 1 in 3 americans,
7:18 am
adults, has dipped into their savings or retirement accounts. how do we begin to rebuild that? >> well, once you've got that tracking of your expenses down, now you can kind of figure out what your priorities should be. and i think we all learn this lesson throughout the pandemic. it is vitally important to have an emergency reserve fund. this is the first concept that i call of my big three. and, you know, 8 in 10 americans right now are focusing on rebuilding those emergency reserve funds. you want to strive for 6 to 12 months of your living expenses. the next aspect of the big three, number two, pay down that high-interest debt like credit card debt. do your best to get a jump on that. and the third part is to fund your retirement plan to the best of your ability. now, look, use technology to help you with all of this. you can automatically transfer funds so easily. you can set up automatic payments to get rid of that
7:19 am
debt. and you certainly can up the percentages that you put into your retirement accounts. these are your three cornerstones of how you can achieve some financial success in 2021. >> it's still a very uncertain time, jill. markets remain volatile. if you have money to invest, what should you be doing with it? >> boy, 2020, what a year of learning for every investor. and what we really take away from that, or what i take away with that is you don't know when the market is going up or down. back in the spring, if you thought the world was coming to an end you might have sold everything. but then it's really hard to get back in. so you have got to make sure you don't try to time the market. you want t stick to your game plan. if you don't have a game plan, now is a good time to start one, right? and you've got to make sure that your emotions don't creep in. if you're going to make a change, pinky swear with yourself you'll not be swayed when the market moves one way or
