studios this is kpix 5 news . >> a dramatic rescue in san jose overnight as one man was trapped in a vehicle after crashing over a bridge, how fire crews was able to pull them out. and house speaker nancy pelosi's home was targeted, the message being delivered loud and clear. and a record number of coronavirus deaths in california and doesn't mean that stay-at-home homeowners in the bay area will be extended. in morning, let's get to the top story. breaking out of san jose, firefighters rescued a man overnight after a car he was driving plummeted off a bridge falling around 30 feet and landing in a river below. the crash happened around 1:30 am on willow street near minnesota avenue west of highway 87. rescuers found a small sedan partially submerged in the guadalupe river and they climbed down a rocky and drive embankment to get to the driver

and about a dozen firefighters worked to pull him out of the wreckage.>> we had to use the jaws of life, the spreaders and the cutters and hydraulic tools that were brought by the cruise. he was trapped and they were able to force the door and extricate him safely. >> the driver is now at a local hospital and firefighters say he has mild to moderate injuries been time for check of the weather right now with meteorologist darren peck.>> might rain showers across the bay area, part of the same system started last night a little after sunset in the north bay which has taken its time to get down into san jose. we will look more closely at the rain in a second but while you were sleeping this is how we did. one 10th of an inch of rain around the north bay overnight and it has been 100th of an

new annual traditions. be really careful near the water until we get to 9 am in the morning tomorrow to see where that surf advisory extends with the mendocino coast line all the way towards monterey. just be aware when you get near the water. look at the pacific. a lot of energy streaming across it. when you look at the actual rain here this is where the next storm is coming from. that is monday morning and here comes a widespread rainmaker for the bay area as a whole. if we look at how much rain we will likely get on monday we picked up just a little under half an inch of rain from this. that will be more noticeable than last night but also what is more noticeable is the timing. right now looks like a late morning arrival after about sunrise. then it will rain into the early afternoon. the first part of the day on monday it should be done by late in the day on monday it

it shows 50 thanks to all the clouds. the latest check in a closer inspection shows that san jose it could be a chance that it will not be a lot. the rain is falling mainly in the hills and not on the planes. if they get up into the diablo mountains to find any rain being forced out of these clouds there we saw light rain move across fremont and milpitas. now this is what to expect, we will keep a few lingering showers until noon. anything we have that would barely be noticeable but i don't want to be taken off guard. if you notice light rain between now and noon. there are more storms on wednesday next week. we will look at all that a much more detail coming up in the complete forecast coming up. new details about the victim of a deadly hit-and-run on new year's eve in san francisco.

john ramos fort moved to san francisco last year to meet a real estate firm and on thursday she and a woman she did not know were both killed while walking in a crosswalk. a car ran a red light and plowed into them on mission street at second and the alleged driver, troy mcallister, was on parole for robbery and have been arrested twice recently with the da said each time a state parole officer allowed him to go free. the das office said there can be no question that every justice agency involved in this including our office must take responsibility for preventing tragedies like this from happening. we are carefully reviewing what happened and thinking critically about what could have been done differently in this case. police said inside the car the 45-year-old suspect was driving, they found a handgun with an extended magazine and also found drugs believed to be and methamphetamine. they say the suspect tried to run from the scene but was ultimately arrested. then coronavirus numbers

now this is one of the airports were holiday travel may be tapering off of the tsa is reporting a drop off in screenings around the nation. on new year's eve the number of people passing through security checkpoints opt below 1 million for the first time since christmas day. roughly 875,000 passengers were screened on thursday. that is well below the previous daily numbers.>> tracking the light rain that has moved across the bay area over the course of the evening and are so light showers, mainly the south bay but for most of the rest of us from the bay bridge northward it is just clouds. look at the view from treasure island. the clouds are obscuring the tops of the buildings. you can see it is cloudy and it will also be a bit damp. looking at the doppler you see light showers in the east bay hills and santa cruz mountains.

not a lot is falling in the valley but there is a chance we could see light rain. better chance of looking at this would be to watch it on future costs. we will keep the possibility of a few isolated hit and miss sprinkles between now and noon. and into the early afternoon it will turn off but it will say cloudy with the system as it persists with the clouds. any rain we get from here on out it will be really light and done by noon. currently it is warm, relatively, the coldest number i have here is the 49 for santa rosa. six in livermore and fairfield. 46 a warm morning by comparison thanks to the clouds. upper 50s today with all the clouds around and there is a high surf advisor at the coast, expiring tomorrow morning at nine, the entire coastline down to monterey. so be careful at the waters

edge. a lot of energy streaming across the pacific and the next chance of rain is mixed in with all of that. this is the big view on monday morning with a widespread band of rain, this will give us the next chance of widespread rain and it basically covers the first half of monday monday morning into the afternoon and if we get lucky we will get close to half an inch of rain in some spots. that is monday the first half of the day, and watch in the sierra. it will snow likely the remainder of the weekend but monday storm is the one that comes with a bigger punch and will give us close to and a half of new snow in the mountains that it does me travel will be difficult. sunday night into monday night, anyone traveling over the passes you will need extra time as it will be a bit of a slowdown in chains are required. in the seven day forecast we have monday's storm, the timing

2021 educators are noticing a large number of kindergartners are missing from the roster this year. as cbs explains many families are opting for so-called a kindergarten gap year.>>reporter: they were decided that their three daughters will be in the same school with their youngest making the cut off before kindergarten but they chose to hold her back in part because of the pandemic. >> kindergarten is sitting in a plexiglas cube with a mask on and hit me like oh my gosh this is not in the best interest of riley. >> it is a trend in many school district around the country, a recent survey of nearly 500 district leaders and principles found more than half are seeing a decline in kindergarten enrollment. >> kindergarten is a really big step. >> the president and ceo of the present parent institute for quality education says many young learners are feeling behind because schools had to close last spring and they missed out on far more than

academics when not in the classroom.>> things that we think are so important as educators are around creating retains and habits, things in their soothing. >> kindergarten is not required in some parts of the country so some are opting for kids to skip it altogether. >> we were at the impact that not having children purchasing these educational opportunities will have, in the short term and the long term. >> rebecca chose to send riley to preschool again to avoid virtual learning.>> just forcing her to do the remote learning can do and i've seen a huge improvement with her academically and she's excited to show her letters and numbers. >> she thinks her daughter will be more than ready for kindergarten next year and hope things will be more normal by then.>> school leaders are worried about a drop in enrollment and the impact that will have on state funding.
