live from the cbs bay area studios this is kpix 5 news .>> an officer involved shooting a berkeley overnight and how police took a robbery suspect into custody and the multiple weapons officers used. dozens of kaiser permanente workers tested positive for coronavirus in san jose and how health officials say that outbreak can be traced back to one christmas event. larry king is in the hospital this morning, 87-year-old has been battling the coronavirus for more than a week. good morning it is sunday. good morning it is sunday, january 3 i am devin fehely, let's start with a check of our weather with meteorologist darren peck.>> a foggy morning

start, typical after the rain comes through with a lot of humidity in the air, kind of pretty looking out over the downtown but it gets foggy down on the ground in some spots like the tri-valley. but look at the visibility map, you see concord is reporting fog, livermore obviously in san francisco. when we go to the map look at all the areas where the visibility is below 1 mile, livermore, concorde, fairfield, san francisco and santa rosa, all of these places this morning when issues with bob on the roadway and it stays this way the next few hours and then will burn off when the sun comes up. and while we are done with the rain from yesterday we do have plenty of clouds and we will get breaks a blue sky and by the time we get into the afternoon around 4 pm there is an opening because it doesn't last long though, overnight there comes the advance of monday morning's rain. when we checked back with the complete forecast we will timeout the rain for monday morning's commute.

but blue sky today and then rain arrives monday and more storms next week. all of that coming up. breaking this morning, police in berkeley shot a man overnight was apparently threatening officers with a long chain. police say the 51-year-old suspect allegedly robbed the walgreens on shattuck avenue after apm and officer say the man did listen to instructions as he came towards them. they tried less lethal weapons before the officer ultimately fired at the man who was shot in the mouth and now taken to the hospital stable condition. the incident is being investigated by the homicide unit and internal affairs and the officer involved will be placed on a ministry leave a live look at san jose this morning were kaiser permanente said dozens working in the er tested positive for covid 19. officials confirmed 43 staff members and its emergency department tested positive between last sunday and friday and the hospital is working on isolating infected and exposed people through contact tracing.

all er employees are being retested and right now a second related investigation is underway. a staff member went to the er on christmas day wearing a costume and kaiser permanente said the employee was trying to lift people's fears and did not appear sick. an official said any exposure would have been completely innocent and accidental. the company released this statement saying even as the vaccine is beginning to be provided in our communities we are all still vulnerable and remains critical for everyone to continue using the methods help protect ourselves and others. despite the outbreak the facility in san jose is open and allegedly safe for staff and all those who need care as for potentially exposed patients kaiser tells us it is in conducting an investigation and will reach out any patient who needs to be tested. broadcast legend larry king is reportedly has lies in los angeles for covid 19. at 87 his age and past health

tran9.>> it will be two weeks before the city for understanding about her traveling gatherings over the holidays and the new year. this weekend we saw plenty people doing due diligence and lighting for covid test after the holidays. there was a steady stream of parts of the driver test site at the san mateo county event center and health experts said the post-thanksgiving surge did finally run out of steam but it is soon to tell if christmas and new year's will fuel another. the holidays and weekends have reduced testing and have led to lags in reporting. uc san diego, getting a covid test is getting easier, it is as easy as getting a soda. there are multiple cell testing vending machines around campus stocked with plastic tubes containing cell testing kits and students can pick up a test and take a sample to a nearby drop off ben and students and faculty are required have routine testing throughout the quarter. looking at capitol hill, a group of republican senators plan to reject the results of

overnight making for tricky road conditions and a winter storm warnings in effect for tomorrow with predictions of heavy snow and strong wind. snow has been falling in southern california, and in los angeles county people venture to the top of the mountain to enjoy fresh powder, some made snowmen and others road on snow slides and this is a much- needed break for many from staying home during the pandemic. >> we have been isolated and quarantined. it is good to be out. social distancing is important, we do not go near anyone.>> everyone is being sent out here and every one has their masks on. everybody is cool here. >> an aerial view shows a coating of snow in the san gabriel mountains northeast of los angeles. >> we will get more snow here in the local theater as well from the next storm which primarily will happen tomorrow. but let's talk about today, the number one issue is it is foggy. you can tell with our camera looking out over the tri-

valley. let's show you what it looks like on the visibility map, temperatures right around 50 at most spots is relatively warm. all the places you see here are the visibility was less than a mile, livermore and concord, santa rosa, san francisco and low everywhere else that it is the places where it is below 1 mile where you have issues on the road to give yourself extra time this morning. as far as the rest of today we start off cloudy. this is sunday. we get breaks a blue sky for the afternoon but it doesn't last long because once we get overnight there comes the rain for monday but it starts as early as late tonight. that's is 11:30 and we have already seen light showers but let's get into the real noticeable stuff. his gets us into tomorrow morning. here we are at 6:30 am monday morning, better organized rain moves across the north bay and we continue to watch this, late in the nine a clock tower and it is widespread and then by noon it is focus from the city,

peninsula and southward and it continues to rain until around two or three in the afternoon and then it will clear the south bay and that is it. the timing on this is pretty much bracketed, the first part of the day on monday. i late afternoon the rain comes to an end and things clear out and affect things clear out overnight monday night and tuesday when we see clear skies, to say likely cold and probably patchy fog. it will also be windy when the rain comes through. one other important aspect on this, at seven tomorrow morning when we see the leading edge of the rain we've noticed the rain and the wind picking up but notice the direction is out of the south, watch a change, he flips around by the time we get to 2:30 the wind will change direction. and that also tells us when you will likely notice some of the strongest wind. just as the cold front passes through and here we are in the early afternoon and we see all the guests in the purple shades to the mid-20s, not bad enough

for wind advisory for this will be a noticeable impact from the system tomorrow. yes we will get rain but the wind will make it feel a little more unpleasant to be outside and that will come primarily in the afternoon. the daytime highs today come up into the low 60s for most spots. look at the rainfall totals for tomorrow. we pick up half an inch of rain in the north bay and less than that and the south bay, probably more like 210 7 inch of rain and that snow in the sierra focused on monday, watch what happens on monday, that gets us up to just over 1 foot of snow throughout the day monday to tuesday and because of that we have a winter storm warning that starts at 4 am tomorrow. it doesn't expire until 4 am on two. more rain coming wednesday by the way. here is the rainfall just for wednesday and tuesday will be a day off with no rain, but wednesday the neck system comes we pick up about a quarter of

welcome back it is 6:29 am, and for joining us i am devin fehely now let's check the weather with meteorologist darren peck >> talk about the rain coming tomorrow but first things first, it is foggy to start this morning. you can see that from our camera in dublin looking out towards the tri-valley look at those lights and let's but the visibility on the screen, low 50s most spots and the clouds of kept us relatively warm. all the visibility rings that are less than 1 mile are the places we need to watch for.

liver mere, livermore, concord, fairfield, san francisco, anytime visibility drops below 1 mile will tell you that you like to hit spots on the roadway with low visibility, san jose included. it is very foggy and it is cloudy. it will stay cloudy the first part of today, no rain today, just clouds will get breaks in the clouds were little bit of blue sky but the rain arrives later tonight. you see the timing, to get it early tomorrow morning we see the leading edge of the showers arrive for much of the bay area. the headlines today, they basically cover everything that we just discussed. the main thing to keep in mind is it is just clouds today with breaks a blue sky, better rain on monday and more storms arriving after that next week more on that in just a bit. a sad and sobering milestone reached this morning in the coronavirus pandemic johns hopkins reporting the united states has reached more than 3 to 50,000 covid deaths putting 10,000 deaths in the

hospitals in the united kingdom are poised to administer newly approved coronavirus essenes. staff at the national health service will be among the first in line or shots developed by astrazeneca and oxford university and the united kingdom just recorded its highest daily number of covid 19 places of more than 57,000 on saturday. meanwhile drug regulators in india have granted emergency is authorization to the astrazeneca vaccine. so far that vaccine has not been approved in united states. a truly tragic story out of the central valley, nine people died in a fiery head-on crash seven of the victims are believed to be between the ages of six and 15. the accident happened around 8 pm on new year's day and highway 33 s. of fresno. chp says the driver of an suv straight onto the shoulder of the road, must control and then veered back into oncoming traffic slamming into a pickup truck.

the 28-year-old man in the suv died on the scene and the head- on impact caused truck to burst into flames. >> when the fire was extinguished, tragically it was discovered there were eight occupants, seven of which appear to be juveniles inside the ford. >> chp said the pickup with eight people inside only had seatbelts for six. investigators are working to determine if alcohol or drugs or factors in the crash. a small plane crashed into a home in michigan killing three people in the aircraft. this happened yesterday in oakland county near detroit. video from the scene shows the plane in pieces and major damage to the house local sheriff said the plane hit the living room and luckily the family of five were in other parts of the house at the time. the plane's pilot and two passengers were killed. also this morning residents in tennessee are on high alert since the bombing in downtown nashville nine days ago.

the world's oceans from microscopic fibers and plastics. many of the fibers or strands being a shed from synthetic fabrics in our clothes and they also include fragments of plastic products like bottles and bags. scientists estimate around 3 million tons of microfibers pollute the oceans and some of that position is reaching the ardor and water of antarctica. >> it is being found in the stomachs of fish and it accumulates all the way up to the food chain. >> all the way to human beings? >> possibly. >> a greenpeace lab looked at the waters from an article and as i just found microfibers from every sample summer to what they found in the same place two years earlier.>> is a piece of micro plastic and all yester floating in antarctic waters and we don't know what the biologic consequences are at the moment that we do know

these micro plastics are there and that exposure is occurring and it really should not be occurring. it is part of a man-made problem that has now gone global. >> environmentalists say their solutions like using special filters and washing machines to catch some of those fibers but the best long-term strategy is to make and use less plastic and focus on buying clothes made with natural materials. our attention now turned back home and the next rain coming on monday but before we get to that let's talk about the fog on sunday morning. this is the view back towards the bay area bridge. you can just see the roadway and everything above the roadway is covered by the clouds. and that is low enough that many spots it is fog on the roadway. look at all of the 1/4 mile readings showing up for livermore, concord, it had gotten a little better in santa rosa, and san jose. that number four is one limited reading coming from the airport, there will be patch

areas a fog anywhere in the bay area so give yourself extra time on the road comely reporting stations are saying fog, relatively warm temperatures right around 50. now we keep the clouds around for a good part of today with some breaks a blue sky but more clouds than anything else. and then around midnight the first bands of rain arrived, it will be pretty widespread. and then 7 am most of the north bay included, then close to 10 still focused primarily in the north bay, but it moves south over the city, peninsula and the south bay and by late morning, noon we continue to see scattered showers. and then once we get passed around 2:30 in the afternoon it is clearing out so it is really the first half the day monday with the rain and it will get windy. similar timing, late morning into the early afternoon when we see stronger wind picking up

as the front passes with 24 mile-per-hour wind gusts. so whatever rain that we do see some will be going sideways, it adds to the overall, not so pleasantness of being outside on a day like that. as far as rainfall totals, still looks reasonable to get close to heaven is rain around the north bay and likely less than that down in the south bay we pick up 2-10 of an inch. monday snow will cumulate in the sierra that takes us into wednesday in fact. about 1 foot of new snow around on her past, also echo summit and that is where the national weather service issued a winter storm warning that goes into effect at 4 am monday and it doesn't expire until 4 am tuesday. the next storm gets your wednesday. no rain on to say that for wednesday we see another system and wednesday to thursday we pick up perhaps another quarter of an inch of rain.

now today the daytime highs come up to right around 60 under the clouds. and in the seven day forecast we have that monday rain, then there is the wednesday night rain and a leftover shower on thursday, then perhaps quieter and a little bit of a break towards next weekend. things will quiet down just a little bit for us by the time we get to that point. happening today, the swedish environmental activists, greta there amber, a leading voice and climate change and an outspoken advocate many conferences and summits, r-maine messages politicians should listen to the science and take action and she's turning 18 today, she has now a right to vote in swedish elections. with a pandemic forcing many businesses to change or operations, even entertainers about a shift, michelle griego spoke to the magician from palo alto who is performing tricks virtually to make ends
