>> good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we are beginning with the president's most daring move yet to overturn the election results. some people are calling it an abuse of power. in a shockling call over the weekend, president trump is pressuring the georgia secretary of state to find the ballots needed to flip the state in his favor. there are now calls to maybe even a criminal investigation into mr. trump's actions. >> yes, the senator from illinois is calling for an investigation saying what the president did amounts to intimidation by calling up t georgia secretary of state asking him to find votes and basically threatening him vaguely with some sort of criminal offense. >> president trump made his boldest attempt yet to overturn

the election. >> i just want to find 11,780 votes, which is one more than we have. >> an audio first obtained by the washington post, president trump pressed georgia secretary of state to change the vote count citing disproven claims of fraud. so dead people voted and i think the number is close to 5,000 people. >> georgia recounted multiple times before the republican fact checked the president in real time. >> mr. president, the challenge you have is the data you have is wrong. >> two people that were dead that voted sos that wrong. >> they've lost dozens of legal challenges in several states. >> that was desperately the voice of desperation. >> lawmakers were sworn into

picked up 216 votes with the slimmest house majority in two decades. the republican house minority leader received 209 votes. members this year were broken up into groups rather than gathering on the floor at once to get sworn in. newly elected and returning members of the senate also took the oath of office yesterday. senate majority leader mcconnell added he understand the challenges and said with the rollout of the vaccine, 2021 looks bright already. breaking developments in the fight against the coronavirus. this morning, britain began inoculating people with the new astrazeneca oxford vaccine. an 82-year-old man was mopping the first to get the shot.

the u.s. passed more than 20 million cases over the weekend. the death toll now just over 351,000 people. new york became the fourth state to record more than 1 million cases. with the virus raging, there is concern that holiday gatherings are fuelling a new surge. a report from los angeles. >> the nations stalled vaccine roll out can't keep up with new year's resolutions to get back to normal. >> airports are packed. tsa screened 14 million travelers. new year's eve parties like this one have officials worried. in lockdown, los angeles, this illegal event had 1,000 people. miles away, refrigerated trucks are storing the dead as morgues overflow amid another surge. >> in this battle, we are so outnumbered.

u.s. surgeon general adams discussions a post holiday surge in covid cases. a man is in custody this morning after he allegedly shot and killed a pastor at an east texas church. he had been on the run and hid in the bathroom of the starrville church bathroom. the pastor was shot and killed after he discovered the gunman. >> the pastor who had a firearm himself drew his arm and ordered him to stop. he starts coming towards the front door and turns around and lungs at the pastor and disarm the pastor at this time. >> two other people were hurt and the man was arrested after he took off in the pastor's vehicle. coming up, two men cause panic after parachuting from a nashville bar in a new year's

this year. those are some of the headlines on the morning news stand. the associated press reports president-elect joe biden's inauguration will include a virtual parade. mr. biden is said to take part in the event. it will happen after the swaring in ceremony in front of the capital on january 20. they will forego the traditional parade to follow covid protocols and receive the traditional presidential escort with representatives from every branch of the military to the white house. according to the detroit free press says a witness saw a small plane strike a tree before crashing into a home. the incident happened saturday afternoon in michigan. the plane crashed into the two-story home causing a massive fire. people in the neighborhood raced to see what happened. >> i heard the low roar of the

plane and a loud thud. >> you can see the whole front of the plane. it was all smashed in. we were like, my god, this could happen to us. >> five people were inside the home at the time and were not hurt. the pilot and two family members on the plane were killed. the ntsb is investigating. >> the new york times is said to award the presidential medal of freedom to two of his most ardent republican defenders in the house. officials tell the paper california congressman nunes and jordan will receive the highest honor. he wants to honor them in their leading rolls defending him against the fbi's probe of russia interference and the house's impeachment inquiry. still ahead now, a late

betting site suffered an outage. good morning. >> good morning to you. wall street opens the first day of trading for 2021. on thursday, the benchmarks ended the year. dow climbed 196 to close at a record high. nasdaq added 18 and s&p 500 gained 24, also hitting a record high. bitcoin rallied to a new record, the digital currency soared past $34,000. since march, it has increased almost 800%. gaining the trust of investors. weeks after bitcoin surpassed $20,000 for the first time ever. tesla missed its target for 2020. before covid hit, elon musk set a goal.

it fell short. they stuck to the goal only after its assembly plant closed for weeks because of the virus. with plants opening in germany and texas. sports fans could not place bets after fan duel had a wide-spread outage. down a couple of hours on the last day of the regular football season. some people complained they couldn't draw bets they placed. according to the company, there are more than 6 million registered users. i'm not a huge football fan but my twitter was full of people complaining on this one. a big day for football.
