i'm anne-marie green. we are going to begin with the critical pair of senate runoff races happening today in georgia. the high stakes contest will determine which party controls the chamber. yesterday president trump and president-elect joe biden were in the state trying to shore up last-minute votes for their respective parties. meanwhile, mr. trump continued to make false claims about election fraud. debra alfarone is in washington. debra, how did these two men rally the voters in the 11th hour? >> reporter: well, anne-marie, president trump appeared at a rally in northwest georgia and he told the crowd without evidence that democrats were trying to steal the white house so the people in the crowd can't let them steal the senate. now joe biden, the president-elect, he was in atlanta and he encouraged people there to vote saying you can change america. the balance of power in washington will be decided in georgia today. >> one state can chart the course, not just for the next

four years but for the next generation. >> reporter: voters head to the polls for twin runoff elections with control of the senate at stake. the state turned blue for joe biden in november. yesterday he urged georgians to rally behind democrats jon ossoff and raphael warnock. >> they're principled, qualified, decent. >> reporter: last night president trump held his own ral rally. a win by either candidate keeps the senate in republican hands. >> this could be the most important vote you will ever cast. >> reporter: the president also continued his baseless attack on the 2020 election. >> there's no way we lost georgia. there's no way. >> reporter: democrats are now calling for a criminal investigation into president trump after his phone call pressuring election officials to change the results. >> i just want to find 11,780 votes, which is one more than we have. >> reporter: georgia secretary

of state brad raffensperger spoke to cbs evening news anchor norah o'donnell about that call. >> why do you think the president wanted to speak to you directly? >> probably to see if he could influence me to change my plans. >> another shot down the conspiracy theories. >> everybody's vote is going to count. everybody's vote did count. >> reporter: more than 3 million georgians cast ballots during early voting for today's runoffs. and because of that we may not know the results of these elections for several days, anne-marie. >> oh, my goodness. sounds like a repeat of something we just went through in this country. debra alfarone in washington. thank you so much, debra. so the national guard has been called in ahead of tomorrow's planned protests by trump supporters in washington as congress certifies the electoral college vote. more than 300 members of the national guard will be deployed to help local law enforcement handle any violence. the mayor has asked residents to stay away from downtown

washington today and tomorrow. at least three groups have submitted paperwork to hold pro trump rallies this week in the nation's capitol. a few dozen democrats are supporting a move to censure president trump over his phone call with georgia's secretary of state. hank johnson of georgia who delivered questions during mr. trump's impeachment hearing introduced the resolution yesterday. he's calling on mr. trump to acknowledge joe biden's win in the presidential race. meantime, there are calls for both federal and state investigations regarding mr. trump's phone conversation. the incident is dividing the gop. natali brand reports from the white house. >> reporter: house democrats are urging the fbi to open a criminal investigation into president trump's stunning one-hour phone call with georgia's secretary of state. >> i just want to find 11,780 votes, which is one more than we

have. >> mr. president -- >> reporter: a source familiar with the matter tells cbs news the saturday call was the first time the two parties spoke since election day despite 18 prior attempted calls from the white house. >> i didn't feel intimidated. i can stand on my own two feet. there's no 12,000 votes out there. >> reporter: on fox news channel members of the president's party gave mixed reaction. >> i didn't hear anything that the president hasn't already said for weeks now. >> this call was not a helpful call. >> reporter: congressional republicans are also split over plans by dozens of gop lawmakers to object to wednesday's counting of electoral college votes. ohio senator rob portman is one of the latest republicans to come out against the plan saying in a statement i cannot support allowing congress to thwart the will of the voters. the objections are expected to temporarily delay but not overturn certification of the results. >> joe biden will be the next president of the united states

of america notwithstanding the delusional fantasies of some of my colleagues on the other side of the aisle. >> president trump lashed out at republicans who refused to challenge the results on twitter calling them the, quote, surrender caucus. ahead on "cbs this morning," georgia lieutenant governor jeff duncan talks about the president's phone call, his state senate races and tomorrow's certification of the electoral college results. new york state reported its first case of the new coronavirus strain that's believed to be even more contagious. governor andrew cuomo said it was detected in a symptomatic man in his 60s who works at a jewelry store in saratoga springs outside of albany. cuomo says the man has not traveled recently and is on the mend. in northern california there was a covid outbreak at a hospital. at least 44 staff members were infected since december 27th. one of those workers died.

officials say that the outbreak may have been caused by an inflatable holiday costume worn by a staffer at kaiser-permanente san jose medical center. the employee who died was a registration clerk in the e.r. the hospital is testing employees and deep cleaning. and this morning england is under a new national lockdown until at least mid february. prime minister boris johnson said that the new coronavirus variant is spreading in an alarming way. schools and colleges are now shut down and people are being ordered to work from home if possible. officials in kenosha, wisconsin, are taking precautionary measures ahead of an announcement of whether a white officer will be charged in the shooting of jacob blake, a black man. the decision is expected to come any day now. the officer shot blake seven times in august after police responded to a domestic dispute.

by her jacket. this terrifying scene played out sunday at a ski resort in upstate new york. the ski patrol set up a tarp beneath her and caught her when she let go. it's not clear how she slipped out of the lift but luckily she was not hurt. the first woman in the u.s. to receive a covid vaccine got her second dose, and the leader of an extremist group was arrested. those are some of the headlines on the morning newstand. the washington post reports police in washington arrested the leader of the far right group the proud boys. henry enrique theriault is accused of burning a black lives matter sign torn down from a historic black church last month. the metropolitan police department said he was arrested yesterday as he arrived in the nation's capitol ahead of protests planned by president trump supporters. police say theriault was found with two high capacity firearm magazines. he is facing destruction of property and weapons charges. the milwaukee journal

sentinel says a former pharmacist accused of intentionally destroying coronavirus vaccines has been released on bond. steven bradenberg was arrested last week following an investigation into 57 spoiled viles of the moderna vaccine. he told police he tried to ruin hundreds of doses of the vaccine because he believes the shots would mutate people's dna. a detective said he is an admitted conspiracy theorist. and our new york station wcbs reports that the first nurse in the u.s. to get the covid vaccine got her second and final dose. sandra lindsay received her pfizer shot yesterday at long island jewish medical center in queens, new york. lindsay says -- rather, lindsay oversees the intensive care patients and she says she didn't realize her experience would forever be etched in our nation's history. >> i had no idea i was going to be the first in new york state,
