capitol police officer died last night. it is the fifth death related to wednesday's rampage. sfrs gathered in front of the capitol to honor officer brian sicknick. police say that he was injured while physically engaging with protesters and then he later collapsed and succumbed to his injuries. he served on the force for 12 years. meanwhile, in a video released last night president trump appeared to acknowledge his defeat. he said a new administration will take over on january 20th and he called for healing. the video comes hours after democrats demanded that he be removed from office. debor debra alfarone is in washington. what else did the president have to say? >> reporter: he said that he was outraged by the violence, lawlessness and mayhem. this comes more than 24 lawyers after domestic terrorists struck the capitol. it's a far different sentiment than the one that h had when he first came out with the video where he sympathized with the

rioters, saying, i know how you feel. facing talk of a forceful removal from office and the resignation of two cabinet members president trump release add video condemning the violence by his supporters. >> the demonstrators who infiltrated the capitol from defiled the seat of american democracy. >> reporter: citing the president's rhetoric on wednesday -- >> you will never take back our country with weakness. >> reporter: -- education secretary betsy devos and transportation secretary elaine chow resigned. >> do you stand by this president dangerously staying in office? >> reporter: democrats are calling on the remaining cabinet members to remove the president using the 25th amendment and threatening another impeachment. >> he will be remembered for the rest of american history for death, division and depression. >> reporter: federal law enforcement is working to identify those involved in wednesday's assault. cbs news has learned that some of the rioters have stayed in the area and may be planning new attacks.

>> no one can tell me that if it had been a group of black lives matter protesting yesterday there wouldn't have been -- they wouldn't have been treated very, very differently. >> reporter: the capitol police chief resigned amid intense criticism. >> i have never seen a crowd that's less afraid of the police than this one. >> reporter: and yesterday's video president trump discouraged any more violence. >> we have just been through an intense election and emotions are high, but now tempers must be cooled. >> reporter: mr. trump also acknowledged defeat and said he's focused on a smooth transition of power. and until that transition of power takes place the inauguration, president trump will not be able to share his thoughts and sentiments on facebook as facebook said he is not welcome to use their platform until after his presidency ends. anne-marie? >> debra alfarone in washington. thank you so much. president-elect joe biden strongly condemned the capitol attack in remarks yesterday he pinned the blame squarely on

president trump. >> trying to use a mob to silence the voices of nearly 160 million americans who summoned the courage in the face of a pandemic that threatened their health and their lives to cast that sacred ballot. >> mr. biden went on to denounce the rioters who stormed the capitol as domestic terrorists. he added, they were egged on by mr. trump who he says has tried to undermine democracy since he took office. well, sedition charges are on the table for pro-trump rioters who stormed the u.s. capitol. prosecutors say that they are considering all options as they go through the evidence. police have arrested dozens of people in connection to wednesday's riot. kris van cleave reports on the efforts to identify them. >> reporter: among the mob breaking into the capitol building, selfies at the senate

of apparent natural causes. rudy giuliani and some outside the capitol blamed anarchists not protesters despite providing no evidence. >> we have every right to be in there. what i disavow is the destruction of it and we didn't do that. that was antifa. >> reporter: former fbi deputy director john pistol. >> is there a way to determine who these people were? >> we look at the instigator in chief and what he was doing and encouraging people to go to the capitol and to protest, beyond a reasonable doubt of evidence in a criminal court says that they were trump supporters. >> reporter: kris van cleave, cbs news, washington. well, some airlines are beefing up security in washington as demonstrators fly home. american and united have both increased staffing at the d.c. area airports where they operate. american is also suspending alcohol on its flights to and from the area. meantime, the faa released a

elon musk's company is expected to attempt at least 40 falcon 9 flights this year. meanwhile, musk can claim a new title and a senator has lost a book deal, those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. "the new york times" reports simon and shuster canceled plans to publish a book by senator josh hawley, the missouri republican was criticized for trying to overturn the results of the presidential election. he was also accused of helping to incite wednesday's riots at the u.s. capitol. the book the tyranny of big tech was scheduled to be published in june. simon and shuster a division of viacom cbs says it cannot support senator hawley after his role in what became a dangerous threat to our democracy and freedom. hawley vowed to fight the decision in court. the atlanta journal constitution says republican senator kelly loeffler conceded defeat to democrat rafael warnock. loeffler lost to warnock in one of two senate runoff elections

in georgia on tuesday. democrat jon ossoff won the other runoff, giving democrats control of the u.s. senate. in a video posted to facebook loeffler said that she called warnock to congratulate him. >> while my heart breaks at not being able to continue to serve georgia and america, i'm tremendously proud of all we achieved together and i owe so much to my incredible team that became like family to me both in my campaign and my official office. it's been an honor to serve together. >> loeffler was appointed to a the senate last year by georgia governor brian kemp. and bloomberg reports spacex and tesla ceo elon musk is now the richest person in the world. musk surpassed amazon founder jeff bezos yesterday when the price of tesla's stock surged almost 8%. bloomberg says musk has a net worth of more than $188 billion. shares of tesla have increased to almost 800% in the past year.

whopper goes retro. diane king hall is in new york with those stories and more. welcome back. i saw you but we didn't do moneywatch because there was a lot of news. >> i was going to say, did i miss anything? definitely a lot going on this week, anne-marie. there was another rally on wall street with the three major indexes surging to intra day records and closing highs. investors are focusing on the new democratic congress and the prospects of higher stimulus checks for americans. so the dow jumped 211 points, these are, again, bets of more stimulus, the nasdaq surged 326 and the s&p 500 gained 55. joe boeing has agreed to pay $2.5 billion to settle a justice department investigation into two deadly 737 max crashes. prosecutors say boeing employees gave misleading statements and half-truths about safety issues with the plane to the faa and then covered up their actions. officials say the settlement

includes money for victims' families and airline customers. the crashes the first in october of 2018 and the second in march of 2019 killed 346 people. as many as 13 million people could still be waiting for their $600 stimulus checks due to a glitch by the irs. the irs sent checks to temporary accounts created by tax prep services for depositing refunds. those tax refunds. those accounts are now closed or invalid and those people who don't get their checks may need to wait to file their 2020 taxes when they can claim the stimulus claim as a tax rebate. and the home of the whopper is going retro. burger king unveiled its first brand redesign in at least two decades. the new simple logo is in a '70s typeface called flame. it features burnt orange and mustard colors. the new logo will be featured on everything from packaging to employee uniforms. burger king says the redesign was made to get people to crave

an uber and returned after the altercation. no word on the charges that she faces. the final episode of "jeopardy" hosted by alex trebek airs tonight. trebek died on november 8th after battling pancreatic cancer. the final shows were taped in october. executive producer mike richards told deadline there is no farewell from trebek since he did not know it would be his last show. trebek planned to tape more episodes the following week but richards says he was not feeling well. there will be a tribute segment to trebek at the end of tonight's show. and we're learning more about how the ncaa will conduct march madness. the entire 67-game men's basketball tournament will be held in and around indianapolis due to the pandemic. a convention center where practice will take place is connected to the team's hotels by protected walkways. participants will be tested for seven straight days before they arrive and testing will be done before each game. >> right now we're not having
