i'm anne-marie green. we begin with the major security operation in washington, d.c., for the inauguration of president-elect joe biden on wednesday. some 25,000 national guard troops are protecting the u.s. capitol and the surrounding area from extremist threats. there's also concern about an insider attack, so the fbi is vetting every single troop. this comes as the "new yorker" releases new footage of the deadly raid from january 6th. one portion shows protesters going through desks and taking pictures of documents on the senate floor. debra alfarone is in washington. just what else does this video reveal? >> reporter: it's pretty alarming, anne-marie. it shows how these rioters, this wasn't a spur of the moment attack for them, this was their mission. ugthe capitol, ey look throdesks,hey say we're doing this because president trump asked us to.

newly released video by the "new yorker" shows some of the most detailed actions of the rioters who stormed the capitol. the pro-company mob rummaged through desks thinking lawmakers would approve. >> they would us to do this. i think we're good. >> reporter: the nation's capitol has since turned into an armed fortress ahead of president-elect joe biden's inauguration. >> sometimes the enemies are a little closer to home. >> reporter: concerned about a potential inside attack, the fbi is vetting all 25,000 national guard troops now stationed in washington. >> protect property and lives. >> reporter: major general kendall penn told the national guard to stay focused on their mission. >> this isn't about who won or lost the election. there is about us fulfilling our oath to support and defend the constitution of the united states. >> reporter: congress is investigating the intelligence and security failures leading up to the capitol assault. the senate is also preparing for the impeachment trial of president trump.

>> members really have to follow their own conscience. >> reporter: president trump's allies say it's time to turn the page with him leaving office. >> pursuing impeachment after he leaves the office will further divide the country. >> reporter: democrats disagree. >> it is constitutionally dangerous not to proceed. >> reporter: sources close to president trump tell cbs news he's preparing to issue a final round of pardons this week. a final round that could include 100 people or more. sources close to the white house say that the president has privately debated on whether or not to give himself and his family a pardon, but at this point he's not planning on doing so. anne-marie? >> all right, debra alfarone in washington. thank you so much. security is ramped up at state capitols across the country after the fbi warned of the potential for armed protests ahead of the inauguration. a small group of protesters was spotted outside the state capitol in lansing, michigan, yesterday.

some of them were armed. our david begnaud spoke with one of the demonstrators who did not want to share his name. >> reporter: what's the purpose of coming armed? >> it's just a thing. you know, kind of our thing. it's what we do. >> reporter: are you anti-government? >> not exactly. we don't like the massive overreaches of a lot of branches of the government. >> michigan is among the states that have canceled this week's upcoming legislative session due to credible threats. and coming up on "cbs this morning," former homeland security secretary jeh johnson joins us to talk about the biggest security threats this week. vice president-elect kamala harris today will resign her senate seat two days before she's inaugurated. harris is not set to give a farewell speech on the senate floor. meantime, fellow democrat alex podilla, now secretary of state, will finish out the final two years of harris' term. he will be the first latino senator

to take over her term. it has been one year since the first covid case was reported in the u.s. now there are nearly 24 million cases, and almost 400,000 deaths. the worst in the world. lilia luciano reports from one of the hardest hit areas. >> reporter: los angeles is the first county in the nation to hit one million covid cases. it's facing a more contagious strain, and half of all covid deaths in california are happening here. >> we're a little nervous that this may just be the eye of the hurricane. >> reporter: dr. evan zahn is part of cedars sinai's covid line team helping in the icu. what does it look like inside the hospital? >> the beds are filled, and they're filled with sick people on respirators who need help. >> reporter: what concerns you the most right now? >> it's people's behavior. we have the science and the technology to get past this. >> reporter: adding pressure, vaccines are in short supply. anxious americans waiting hours
