i'm anne-marie green. we begin with the major security operation in washington, d.c., for the inauguration of president-elect joe biden on wednesday. some 25,000 national guard troops are protecting the u.s. capitol and the surrounding area from extremist threats. there's also concern about an insider attack, so the fbi is vetting every single troop. this comes as the "new yorker" releases new footage of the deadly raid from january 6th. one portion shows protesters going through desks and taking pictures of documents on the senate floor. debra alfarone is in washington. just what else does this video reveal? >> reporter: it's pretty alarming, anne-marie. it shows how these rioters, this wasn't a spur of the moment attack for them, this was their mission. ugthe capitol, ey look throdesks,hey say we're doing this because president trump asked us to.

newly released video by the "new yorker" shows some of the most detailed actions of the rioters who stormed the capitol. the pro-company mob rummaged through desks thinking lawmakers would approve. >> they would us to do this. i think we're good. >> reporter: the nation's capitol has since turned into an armed fortress ahead of president-elect joe biden's inauguration. >> sometimes the enemies are a little closer to home. >> reporter: concerned about a potential inside attack, the fbi is vetting all 25,000 national guard troops now stationed in washington. >> protect property and lives. >> reporter: major general kendall penn told the national guard to stay focused on their mission. >> this isn't about who won or lost the election. there is about us fulfilling our oath to support and defend the constitution of the united states. >> reporter: congress is investigating the intelligence and security failures leading up to the capitol assault. the senate is also preparing for the impeachment trial of president trump.

>> members really have to follow their own conscience. >> reporter: president trump's allies say it's time to turn the page with him leaving office. >> pursuing impeachment after he leaves the office will further divide the country. >> reporter: democrats disagree. >> it is constitutionally dangerous not to proceed. >> reporter: sources close to president trump tell cbs news he's preparing to issue a final round of pardons this week. a final round that could include 100 people or more. sources close to the white house say that the president has privately debated on whether or not to give himself and his family a pardon, but at this point he's not planning on doing so. anne-marie? >> all right, debra alfarone in washington. thank you so much. security is ramped up at state capitols across the country after the fbi warned of the potential for armed protests ahead of the inauguration. a small group of protesters was spotted outside the state capitol in lansing, michigan, yesterday.

some of them were armed. our david begnaud spoke with one of the demonstrators who did not want to share his name. >> reporter: what's the purpose of coming armed? >> it's just a thing. you know, kind of our thing. it's what we do. >> reporter: are you anti-government? >> not exactly. we don't like the massive overreaches of a lot of branches of the government. >> michigan is among the states that have canceled this week's upcoming legislative session due to credible threats. and coming up on "cbs this morning," former homeland security secretary jeh johnson joins us to talk about the biggest security threats this week. vice president-elect kamala harris today will resign her senate seat two days before she's inaugurated. harris is not set to give a farewell speech on the senate floor. meantime, fellow democrat alex podilla, now secretary of state, will finish out the final two years of harris' term. he will be the first latino senator

to take over her term. it has been one year since the first covid case was reported in the u.s. now there are nearly 24 million cases, and almost 400,000 deaths. the worst in the world. lilia luciano reports from one of the hardest hit areas. >> reporter: los angeles is the first county in the nation to hit one million covid cases. it's facing a more contagious strain, and half of all covid deaths in california are happening here. >> we're a little nervous that this may just be the eye of the hurricane. >> reporter: dr. evan zahn is part of cedars sinai's covid line team helping in the icu. what does it look like inside the hospital? >> the beds are filled, and they're filled with sick people on respirators who need help. >> reporter: what concerns you the most right now? >> it's people's behavior. we have the science and the technology to get past this. >> reporter: adding pressure, vaccines are in short supply. anxious americans waiting hours

for a dose if they can get one. >> i don't want to die of the virus if i can get a shot. >> reporter: only 12 million americans have gotten the vaccine. frustrated states say they aren't getting the stockpiles promised by the trump administration. incoming cdc director told "face the nation" help is on the way. >> it will be a hefty lift, but we have it in us to do that. >> reporter: the president-elect's goal is 100 million doses in 100 days. so far 30 million doses have been shipped nationwide. >> i think it's going to be slow, but i think we can eke out more supply with a full court press. >> reporter: even with super sites at the ready, the doses may not be there. lilia luciano, cbs news, los angeles. this morning, britain says it is worried about the safety of russia's leading kremlin critic who was arrested just moments after returning to moscow. alexei navalny was detained tried to enter the country from germany where he spent five months recovering from nerve agent poisoning. he blames the kremlin for the

step before the first planned unmanned launch of the rocket later this year under nasa's artemis program to land humans on the moon by 2024. twitter temporarily suspended congresswoman marjorie taylor greene, and what caused phil spector's death. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "los angeles times" reports legendary music producer and convicted murderer phil spector died after contracting covid-19. that's according to a source. california prison officials say spector died saturday in the hospital. he revolutionized music in the 1960s with his wall of sound and tina turner. he was convicted of murdering actress lanna clarkson in 2003 at his home. he was sentenced to 19 years to life. phil spector was 81. the "associated press" says vice president mike pence and

his wife thanked troops at ft. drum, new york, in their final official appearance together. yesterday the couple thanked the army's tenth mountain division and their families for their service. karen pence became emotional as she addressed the troops. >> you know, it is such an honor to be with you -- here i go -- for our very last trip as vice president and second lady of the united states. >> vice president pence thanked the service members on behalf of president trump. and the "atlanta journal constitution" reports twitter temporarily suspended the account of georgia republican representative marjorie taylor greene. the social media platform prohibited greene from posting new tweets on her account for 12 hours yesterday for violating its rules. greene has expressed racist views, posted inflammatory videos, and supported far right

she said the historic inauguration is especially meaningful for american women and girls. on the cbs "money watch" now, the tsa has ramped up security, and a dream job for hot doggers. naomi ruchim is in new york with those stories and more. good morning, naomi. >> reporter: good morning to you. the stock market is closed today in observance of martin luther king jr. day. meantime, on friday the three major indices sank as investors digested dismal bank earnings and a december slump in retail sales. the dow plunged 177 points. the nasdaq dropped 114 points, and the s&p 500 was down 27. the tsa says it's beefed up security ahead of the presidential inauguration wednesday. the federal agency is working to process hundreds of names with law enforcement agencies for a thorough risk assessment.

as in past years, the tsa officers will be deployed to help the secret service by screening people along the parade route and those authorized to attend the ceremony. the national rifle association has filed for bankruptcy protection. the gun rights advocacy group says it plans to leave new york state where it was founded in 1871 and reincorporate as a nonprofit in texas. the announcement follows leadership shakeups and allegations of financial mismanagement at the nra. the pandemic also forced the nra to lay off dozens of employees, cancel its national convention, and scrap fundraising. here's a dream job for you hot dog lovers. kraft heinz is looking for a new team of folks to drive its popular weiner mobile all across the u.s. for a year. the job posting says the ideal hot dogger is outgoing, creative, and a college graduate with an appetite for adventure.

here's a look at the forecast in some cities ar the country. ♪ kansas city chiefs' star quarterback patrick mahomes had to leave the playoff game against the browns after taking a nasty hit in the third quarter. he was ruled out of the game due to a possible concussion. we should learn more about his status today. the chiefs will play the buffalo bills next sunday in the afc championship. the head of the australian open says the tennis tournament will go ahead as planned next month. that is despite 72 players being forced to quarantine because of the coronavirus in their hotel rooms. 25 players had to go into a 14-day quarantine when a fifth person tested positive after arriving on a charter flight bringing players and coaches from qatar to melbourne.

organizers earlier announced 47 players had to quarantine after four passengers on other charter flights tested positive. one player spent part of her quarantine hitting tennis balls into a mattress propped up on the wall of her hotel room. >> we need to do what we can do as best as we can for those players and provide exercise equipment in their rooms. and we'll do that over the course of today. and then keep monitoring the situation. obviously our first objective is that everyone is -- remains as healthy as pose not the cause of further spread within the bubble. >> no players are among those who have tested positive. and the huge jackpots for the mega millions and powerball lotteries have rolled over again. nobody won the top prize in either drawing last week. that means tuesday's mega millions jackpot is worth an estimated $850 million. that is the third largest jackpot ever. wednesday's powerball jackpot is estimated to be $730 million.
