captioning funded by cbs good morning.be wu. anne-mie green. morning as president biden starts his first full day in office. he was sworn in as the nation's 46th president yesterday during a historic ceremony at the u.s. capitol. kamala harris took her oath of office as the first female vice president. later mr. biden and the first lady watched fireworks from the white house, capping off a very busy day in our nation's capital. debra alfarone is in washington. what is on tap today for president biden? >> reporter: well, after a busy day yesterday, he's got a lot going on today, as well. president biden is going to start off with a prayer service. that's virtual. then later on he's going to speak about his covid plan, meet with his covid team, and also sign a whole bunch of executive orders. >> so help me god -- >> reporter: president joe biden called for unity in his

done so far. and advance racial equity and support under served communities. he stopped construction of the border wall, ending the muslim travel ban and rejoining the paris climate agreement. kamala harris became the first wo tirst b pso oh asia descento become president. >> congratulations. >> reporter: harris later swore in three new senators, giving democrats full control of congress. speaking of congress, there is no word at this point when the senate is going to give that article of impeachment, rather the house is going to give that article of impeachment over to the senate, anne-marie. >> well, they're about to get very, very busy. debra alfarone in washington. thank you so much. so as we mentioned, president biden signed 17 executive actions after being sworn in. he is calling on congress to grant permanent status with a

path to citizenship for nearly a million dreamers who were brought to this country as children. he's also extended eviction and foreclosure moratoriums through the end of march to help americans hit hard by the pandemic. and he's making sure noncitizens are counted in the u.s. census again, reversing president trump's order last july. president biden is also taking quick action to combat the coronavirus pandemic. he plans to ramp up the vaccine supply and work with states and cities to open thousands of vaccination centers. mr. biden is calling for an army of volunteers to be trained to administer the shots. cbs news chief medical correspondent dr. jon lapook says right now there is confusion across the country when it comes to the vaccinations. >> one of the big things is better communication. we have 50 different states and 50 different game plans. i mean, people are so confused right now. >> president biden also signed an executive order calling for a

nationwide face mask and social distancing mandate in federal buildings and on federal lands. the senate has confirmed president biden's first cabinet nominee. avril haines is the newest director of national intelligence. she was approved by an overwhelming bipartisan vote of 84 to 10. haines' day-one confirmation comes after tom cotton briefly held up the process. he asked for a written response from her about a question during her confirmation hearing a day earlier. and former president trump is in florida this morning as he faces a second impeachment trial. he greeted supporters yesterday before making his way to his mar-a-lago club in palm beach. he became the first president to skip his successor's inauguration since 1869. paula reid reports. >> reporter: former president trump departed the white house early wednesday for the last ee]

[ cheers ] in the last hours of his administration, he flip-flopped on one of his signature campaign promises. >> drain the swamp. >> reporter: and reversed his own executive order restricting former officials from lobbying immediately after leaving government. he also issued 144 pardons and commutations. some of those benefiting political allies like former chief strategist steve bannon, charged with defrauding donors of hundreds of thousands of

all persons move to the sidewalk now. >> a group of about 150 protesters carrying anti-president biden and anti-police signs marched in portland, oregon, yesterday. they smashed windows and spray painted messages on the outside of the state's democratic party headquarters. police said that they clashed with some of the demonstrators, and at least eight people were arrested. billionaire jack ma made his first public appearance in months, and there was a deadly military helicopter crash. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "rochester new york democrat and chronicle" reports three national guard members were killed in a helicopter crash. authorities say the new york national guard medical evacuation chopper was on a training mission when it went down last night in a farmer's field. there were no survivors. an investigation is under way. new york governor andrew cuomo directed flags on all state buildings to be lowered to half

staff today to pay tribute to the troops killed in the crash. the "wall street journal" says jack ma, the billionaire co-founder of the chinese company ali baba, made his first appearance in months. he appeared speaking to teachers in rural china during a philanthropic event. he did not mention his almost three-month disappearance from public view. ma was last seen in public in october when he criticized chinese regulators at a financial forum in shanghai. and "politico" reports arnold schwarzenegger posted a video of himself receiving the coronavirus vaccine. the former california governor was inoculated yesterday at a drive-through vaccine site in the parking lot at dodger stadium in los angeles. schwarzenegger's spokesman said the actor booked an appointment for the shot after officials announced that people over 65 could begin receiving vaccines. arnold schwarzenegger is 73, and he used a line from his "terminator" movies to encourage people to get vaccinated.

the dow jumped 257 points, the nasdaq rallied 260, and the s&p 500 gained 52. president biden has directed the education department to extend the nearly year-long pause on student loans through september 30th. all federal loan payments have been paused since march as part of the government's covid-19 response. the grace period was extended in the early drafts of last month's stimulus package but was cut in final negotiations before mr. biden's executive action. payments were to resume at the end of this months. amazon wants to help with vaccine efforts in the u.s. in a letter to president biden viewed by "reuters," the e-commerce giant says it struck the deal with a health care provider where it can administer shots at its facilities. it said it would move forward once doses are available and could provide technology and communications resources to help the new administration with vaccine efforts. and someone is waking up a

the special aired on broadcast and cable news networks including cbs. the u.s. capitol police officer who lured a mob away from the senate chamber during the january 6th riot has been promoted. eugene goodman was elevated to acting deputy senate sergeant-at-arms during yesterday's inauguration. he escorted vice president kamala harris to the swearing-in ceremony. a bipartisan group of lawmakers has introduced legislation to award goodman the congressional gold medal. vermont senator bernie sanders is getting a lot of attention for what he wore during the inauguration. sanders' outfit of a parka and a pair of big brown and white mittens quickly went viral on social media. the mittens were reportedly made by a vermont teacher out of repurposed wool and fleece made from recycled plastic bottles.
