we begin with the uphill fight against the coronavirus as the government races to vaccinate americans. the death toll has reached a sobering record for this month alone. according to johns hopkins, the virus has killed more than 83,000 people in just the past 27 days. that is the highest number of deaths in a single month since the pandemic started. it's adding urgency for the white house to ramp up vaccination numbers as it promises to send out more doses to every state. debra alfarone is in washington. it appears that the administration is putting everything on the table here. >> reporter: it absolutely is. and it's all about ramping up those vaccination numbers. in fact, the administration has found a work-around to get retired doctors and nurses involved in administering those vaccine doses. it's one of many creative ways o fight this pandemic. the director of the federal coronavirus response had a sobering take on the crisis

facing the country. >> 400,000 people have died. everything is on the table across the whole supply chain. >> reporter: the biden administration's newly appointed team held its first public briefing wednesday. members warning some 90,000 americans could die of covid-19 over the next four weeks. >> i know this is not news we all want to hear, but this is something we must say so we are all aware. >> reporter: the coronavirus is spreading rapidly, and it's mutating. a variant has been found in over half the states. it's believed to be at least 50% more contagious. >> i think the better way to think of it rather than being more transmissible is it's stickier. if you're exposed you're more likely to get infected. >> reporter: vaccines remain the key to stopping the virus. the rollout continues to face challenges. ough sply quickly enough. and the second is the ability to

administer the vaccines quickly. >> reporter: president biden has described the fight against the pandemic as a war effort. cbs news has learned that fema has approached the defense department to help staff up to 100 federal vaccination sites. the agency is expected to ask the pentagon for as many as 10,000 service members to run them. those regular coronavirus briefings that are going to be taking place three times a week might look different than the ones we saw during the trump administration. in this one the force is actually adhering to cdc guidelines that say all about social distancing, and they're appearing virtually. anne-marie? >> thank you. this morning the world health organization kicked off its investigation in wuhan, th. the team of scientists had been quarantining in a hotel when they arrived in wuhan two weeks ago. china's president approved the investigation after months of

diplomatic wrangling. the w.h.o. recently accused china and other countries of responding too slowly at the start of the outbreak. back here at home, president biden signed a series of sweeping executive orders aimed at fighting climate change. the measures establish a white house office of domestic climate policy and direct federalci to ze-emissn vehicles. it also calls for a pause on all new oil and gas leases on public lands and in offshore waters. mr. biden said america needs to act now to confront what he calls an existential threat. >> in my view we've already waited too long and can't wait any longer. we see it, we feel it, we know it in our bones.as thendtry is rettthfr drilling on public lands.

the department of homeland security has issued a rare warning. it says the u.s. is facing threats from violent domestic extremists. the agency warns that groups may feel emboldened following the riot at the capitol on january 6th. a specific threat is not being cited, but the advisory runs through the end of april. >> how severe is the threat? >> this is based on what they must be seeing that, indeed, everybody is seeing in social media, that these groups are continuing to say they're going to carry out acts of violence. >> the warning also says extremist groups may feel motivated to target elected officials because of the 2020 election results. on to weather and more heavy rain expected to push into california today following a powerful weather system. the winter storm triggered mudslides damaging at least two dozen homes and buildings in monterey county. two people were taken to the

as chris martinez reports, the storm is sticking around for a few more days. >> reporter: heavy rain is triggering mudslides in central california. a drone captured this video near salinas where wildfires scorched the area back in august. >> if you hear something coming down the hill at you, it's too late. the only thing to do is get out of the way. >> reporter: the monterey county sheriff says the slides have impacted at least two dozen homes, and workers are trying to divert the flow from others. in sacramento, heavy winds caused a massive tree to crash into cars and power lines wednesday night. >> it was howling pretty strong last night. and you could hear it. >> reporter: at least 5,000 people were under mandatory evacuation orders in the santa cruz mountains. >> this is a once in maybe a lifetime for most of these residents. >> i've been here 15 years. this is probably the worst it's been ever. >> reporter: in the sierra-nevada mountains, major snowfall that could cause avalanches is in the forecast.

>> you don't see those kind of warnings very often when it's -- you know, national weather service, eight feet? i mean, that's as about as ridiculous as it gets. >> reporter: the national weather service says 10 to 15 inches of rain could fall between monterey and santa barbara over the next three days. california needs the rain. 95% of the state is under drought conditions. chris martinez, cbs news, los angeles. in florida, a twister caused this plane to overturn at tallahassee international airport. a hangar was also ripped apart. the tornado hit yesterday during a powerful storm and forced the airport to temporarily close. there was some damage reported around the city, as well. a few thousand customers also lost power, but it's now back on. so coming up on the "cbs morning news," we remember actress cloris leachman who made us laugh through the decades. and a rare operation. doctors perform a hip replacement on a tiger.

two nasa astronauts ventured outside the international space station to do a little maintenance. mike hopkins and victor glover conducted a space walk yesterday. they installed a new antenna on the european section of the orbiting lab. but they could not connect all the cables on a science research platform. they're supposed to do another space walk on monday. a tiger undergoes a rare operation, and we pay tribute to an enduring actress and comedian. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the san diego union tribune" remembers the life of oscar and emmy award winning actress cloris leachman. she died of natural causes at her home in california. she won eight prime time emmys including two for her role as phyllis on "the mary tyler moore show." leachman won an academy award for best supporting actress for her role as a lonely housewife in "last picture show" and "you"

and television's "facts of life." leachman was 94. the miami heat will use coronavirus-sniffing dogs to screen fans at its home games. tonight the team will have dogs screen fans, employees, and ey american airlines arena. the team will begin allowing fewer than 2,000 people to enter games. dogs will walk past fans. if the dog keeps going, the fan is cleared. if the dog sits, it's a sign it detects the virus, and they will be denied entry. >> it takes time, it takes repetition, you can imagine, for the dogs to get that process down. once they do and you have a fully operational dog, they can do this type of work. >> if a fan's allergic or afraid of dogs, the team is offering rapid antigen tests instead. and the "chicago sun times" says an old tiger received a new hip because it was suffering from arthritis.

>> the so-called doomsday clock remains set dangerously at 100 minutes until midnight, midnight symbolizing apocalypse. the time was unchanged from last year. it says the coronavirus is not an existential threat to humanity and said the group is more concerned about accelerating nuclear weapons programs and climate change. on the cbs "money watch" now, facebook adds users during the pandemic, and a mac and cheese classic celebrates valentine's day. diane king hall is in new york with those stories and more. good morning, diane. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. the labor department set to release its weekly report on new jobless claims this morning. they're expecting another round of massive losses to the tune of more than 800,000. meantime, stock futures are indicating a lower open, extending losses after stocks endured their worst session yesterday in three months.

the dow skidded some 633 points. the nasdaq sank 355, and the s&p 500 dropped 98. meantime, facebook's latest earnings report beat analysts' expectations. the social media giant reported earnings of more than $11 billion on revenue of more than $28 billion in its fourth quarter. facebook also said monthly users increased to nearly three billion. the newest figures come as more users stay home, plus facebook is cashing in on the shift to digital advertising amid the pandemic. say good-bye to that popular 40% off coupon from hobby lobby. the arts and crafts chain said it will no longer offer the popular coupon at its 900-plus stores or on line starting at the end of next month. hobby lobby said instead of the coupon it will offer better discounts on certain items at stores daily. and thinking of cooking for your valentine? how about a taste of sweet and savory? kraft is out with a special edition mac and cheese for the occasion.

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ the rock band the flaming lips found a creative way to perform with a live audience during the pandemic. the band put themselves and the audience in plastic bubbles during concerts last weekend in oklahoma city. there were about 100 bubbles in the crowd. each could hold up to three

people. the bubbles were equipped with a speaker, fan, bottle of water, and a towel. the video game retailer gamestop is turning wall street upside down. shares of the company rose 134% yesterday largely fueled by small individual investors who were encouraged by posts on reddit. the stock has gained nearly 800% over the past week. the increase has cost big hedge funds betting the stock would fall billions of dollars. >> just tipping the balance of power, at least a little bit, is what's getting people riled up about what's going on. >> that seems to be the case, yeah. there are a lot of folks saying, you know, this is a way for us to seize a bit of power. the emotions on wall street have ranged from disbelief to fear to a little bit of anger. >> the white house says it is monitoring the gamestop situation.

we're getting our first look at actress kristen stewart as the late princess diana, and the resemblance is creating a lot of buzz. the first photo of stewart as lady di from "spencer" shows her with short hair wearing a red coat and black veiled hat. it focuses a weekend in 1991 when diana decides to leave prince charles while spending christmas with the royal family. the film is expected to be released this fall. and we're getting another first look, this one from washington's national zoo. a giant panda cub born last august made his virtual debut yesterday on the zoo's panda cam. the zoo is closed due to the pandemic. the panda, who now weighs 21 pounds, could be seen snacking on sweet potatoes and playing with toys. coming up on "cbs this in" n leor thethe late show us about his new music. this is the "cbs morning news."

still, revenue for the industry dropped 80% in 2020 leaving many theaters big and small on the brink of bankruptcy. but now some financial help is on the way. amc theaters recently raised hundreds of millions of dollars in financing on its own to stay smaller companies are getting stimulus aid from washington. >> it's going to be a lifeline for thousands of businesses across the country. >> reporter: patrick corcoran is with the national association of theater owners that helped successfully lobby congress for $15 billion in grant money. businesses that qualify can use it to pay employees, rent, utilities, and vendors. >> this will certainly get most companies well into the spring, possibly later. >> reporter: after that, it's hoped widespread vactions will help flip the script. >> we hope it rolls out faster and gets more widespread and we can get back to business as usual.
