i'm anne-marie green. we're going to begin with a major nor'easter slamming the east coast. heavy rain, snow, and wind are impacting more than 110 million people. the snow started blanketing parts of new jersey yesterday. winter storm watches and warnings are up in the region. forecasters predict the nor'easter will last until at least tomorrow, possibly pip towo feet of snow in some areas. the storm wreaked havoc in the midwest over the weekend dumping more than ten in i debra alfarone is in washington with more. >> reporter: storm watches, warnings, and advisories are posted from the midwest all the way up to maine. the region is being hit by a blast of unusually powerful winter weather. snow began falling in the new york city area sunday night. it's expected to continue until tuesday with as much as two feet piling up in some places. >> this is not a storm to deate.

>> reporter: forecasters warn that the snow would be accompanied by winds gusting up to 60 miles per hour. strong enough to down trees and power lines. the national weather service urged people to avoid wooded areas and even advised staying indoors and away from windows. here in the nation's capital, experiencing its first significant snowfall in almost two years, they declared a snow emergency. similar declarations have been made in philadelphia, new york city, and in the entire state of new jersey. this slow-moving system churned across the country over the weekend. northern illinois got hit with over 12 inches of snow. milwaukee tallied ten inches on saturday night alone. the weather nearly turned tragic in virginia when a fire truck overturned on an ice-covered road. four crew members were hospitalized. all are expected to survive. >> that was debra alfarone

reporting for us. now in other news breaking overnight, developments in myanmar. the country formerly known as burma. this morning the military there e deaticlegovent. it detained several politicians ud the raids came hours before a new session of parliament was scheduled to open. members who won the november elections were set to take their seats. the military alleges voter fraud in the november election. it announced a state of emergency for one year. the white house released a statement calling on military leaders in myanmar to release government officials and to respect the election results. there are new developments in the race to fight covid here and to get americans vaccinated against the virus. starting today travelers must wear a mask on public transportation here in the u.s. that includes airplanes, trains, buses, and subways, just to make it a few. later this week, johnson &

johnson is expected to ask the fda for emergency authorization for its single-shot vaccine. the company said the dosage was 66% effective for preventing moderate to severe illness across all countries studied. on saturday, fewer than 100,000 americans were in the that is the lowest number in nearly two months. january was still the deadliest month in the pandemic for the u.s. with more than 95,000 deaths. meantime, a group of ten republican senators will meet with president biden today to discuss their covid relief measure. their plan would cost $600 billion, about one-third mr. biden's proposal. direct stimulus payments would go to people making less than $50,000 a year and would not include an increase in the minimum wage. nancy chen has the latest on that. >> reporter: the letter from ten republican senators to president biden seeks a compromise on his

people lined up in cars and on foot sunday in fairfax, virginia, to receive covid-19 vaccines. the world war ii veteran who captivated britain by raising money for the health service during the pandeisn the hospital battling the virus. captain tom moore's daughter says that he's been hospitalized because he needed additional help with his breathing. she said over the past few weeks her dad had been treated for pneumonia. captain moore tested positive for the coronavirus last week. she says that he is not in an intensive care unit. former president donald trump has a new legal team days before his impeachment trial is to begin. he will be represented by david shone, a frequent tv commentator, and bruce caster, a former prosecutor in pennsylvania. his previous lawyers left over the weekend becaus a difference in legal strategy. he's charged with inciting last month's insurrection at the u.s. capitol.

angeles, and a suspect has been identified in a mall shooting. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "green bay press gazette" reports one person was killed and another injured in a wisconsin mall shooting. police are seeking 17-year-old suspect desmond ellis. police responded after shots were fired yesterday inside the fox river mall in grand shoot about 30 miles southwest of green bay. some shoppers were told to shelter in place while others ran from the mall. ano like gger wof screaming and yelling "they're shooting, they're shooting." that's when it kicked in to all of us that there was an actual threat here. >> police say the shooter left the mall before they arrived and is still on the loose. the "los angeles times" says anti-vaccination protesters disrupted operations at one of the largest vaccine sites in the country. they blocked entrances and

companion near the river this month when her dog jumped in the ice to chase a bird. the dog broke through the ice, and so did clements when she went in to help him. >> we're both in the water in the same hole. and my sweetheart didn't have his phone with him. so he couldn't call 911. and he didn't know what to do so he was looking around for a passerby. >> rescuers responded to a 911 call, but two of them also fell through the ice trying to save clements and her dog. she says police told her that she went under the ice three times, and they were not sure they would be able to save her. thankfully, everyone got out safely, and she was able to thank her rescuers. soccer great lionel messi will reportedly take legal action against a spanish newspaper for revealing details of his massive record contract with barcelona el mundo.
