it's wednesday, february 3rd, 2021. this is the "cbs morning news." speeding up vaccinations. the race to fight covid-19 picks up pace as pharmacies nationwide will start receiving doses. this is a very dark day for the fbi. >> fbi agent ambushed. two dead, three wounded in florida. how it all happened in a relatively quiet neighborhood. stepping down. jeff bezos is ending his tenure as ceo of amazon. his next move and his his next move and his replacement. captioning funded by cbs good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we're going to begin this morning with president biden's plan to ramp up deliveries of the coronavirus vaccine. so far more than 26 million people have received one or more doses, and six million have received two doses.

the white house announced yesterday it will start sending vaccines to thousands of pharmacies nationwide starting next week. debra alfarone is in washington. lawmakers are still trying to agree on a covid relief deal, though. >> reporter: they absolutely are. and it's going down two lanes really. so president biden, he's negotiating with republicans, while democrats are trying to use a budgetary maneuver to try and jam this through without republican support. all this is happening as more vaccine doses are on the way. the federal government is shipping out an additional 500,000 coronavirus vaccines nationwide. >> so for the next three weeks, we will provide a minimum of 10.5 million in total doses per week. >> reporter: white house covid-19 response coordinator jeff zion says they are also sending one million doses to 6,500 pharmacies starting next week. >> sites are selected based on their ability to reach some of the populations most at risk. >> reporter: 40,000 pharmacies

may eventually receive direct shipments. health experts in indiana hope it will help reach people that hospitals and mass vaccination sites might not. >> 90% of what hoosiers live within ten miles of the pharmacy. it cuts out the middleman. >> reporter: the white house is working with congress to pass a $1.9 trillion relief bill. president biden told senate democrats that the republican plan of about $600 billion is inadequate. >> if we did a package that small, we'd be mired in the covid crisis for years. >> reporter: democrats are trying to pass their bill through a process called reconciliation which wouldn't require any republican votes. >> totally partisan -- >> reporter: minority leader mitch mcconnell used the same tools to pass the trump tax cuts. >> they're in the majority in the house and senate, and life is a series of choices, and they have chosen. >> reporter: democrats hope to pass a bill by march before the unemployment benefits from the

last package run out. and the president says that this is all about moving quickly. now the budget resolution, that could be approved as early as this week. one vote they really need, the democrats, is that of senator joe manchin of west virginia. he says he's on board with the larger plan. anne-marie? >> well, at least that's a good sign. debra alfarone in washington, thank you. the officer killed in the riots at the u.s. capitol is lying in honor in the building's famous rotunda. president biden and first lady dr. jill biden paid respects to officer brian sicknick during a memorial last night. sicknick's colleagues and lawmakers also paid their respects. the 42-year-old died after defending the capitol on january 6th after a mob stormed the building. he will be buried at arlington national cemetery. and now to one of the darkest days ever for the fbi. two agents were killed and three others wounded in a shoot-out north of miami. they tried to serve a search warrant on a child pornography

suspect yesterday, but the shooter armed with a high-powered rifle, reportedly shot through the door as the agents approached his home. nancy chen has the latest. >> reporter: police on motorcycles escorted an ambulance carrying the body of an fbi agent to the medical examiner's office in south florida. they saluted as their fellow agent covered with the flag was taken into the building. >> they were valuable members of the fbi and will forever be heroes. >> reporter: early tuesday morning, a s.w.a.t. team stormed an apartment building in the ft. lauderdale suburb of sunrise where a man allegedly opened fire and barricaded himself inside his home. >> this neighborhood is very quiet. >> reporter: the fbi says at some point during the standoff, the man was killed. the fbi says the agents went there to execute a federal court ordered search warrant connected to a case involving violent crimes against children.

>> they are an essential and important part of what we do, and we thoroughly research and meticulously plan to take into account any threats or dangers. the vast majority of these warrants occur without incident, and the investigation continues. >> reporter: the fbi identified those killed as special agent daniel alfin and special agent laura schwartzenberger. officers with miami police held a vigil outside their department. >> two members of law enforcement will not be going home to their families today because they laid down their lives in the ultimate sacrifice, making the community they serve safer. >> reporter: two of the injured agents were shot multiple times. they were taken to a local hospital where they're in stable condition. nancy chen, cbs news. president biden has signed three executive orders on immigration reversing policies from the trump administration.

mr. biden's first order will set up a task force designed to locate and reunite migrant families separated at the southern border. he said this isn't new law, but that he's eliminating bad policy. >> we're going to work to undo the moral and national shame of the previous administration that literally not figuratively ripped children from mothers and fathers at the border and with no plan. >> two other orders will mandate a review of the remain in mexico policy which requires asylum seekers to stay in mexico and a review of restrictions made to the legal immigration system over the past four years. republican leaders are wrestling over how to handle the outcry over congresswoman marjorie taylor greene. house minority leader kevin mccarthy met with greene last night. the action comes as gop leaders consider whether to punish the georgia lawmaker for embracing conspiracy theories including suggestions that mass shootings

confirmed. >> the senate overwhelmingly approved the nomination of pete buttigieg as transportation secretary. the 38-year-old former mayor of south bend, indiana, is the first openly gay person to be confirmed to a cabinet post. he will lead efforts to rebuild infrastructure and fight climate change. a prison sentence has been handed down to a russian opposition leader, and we remember a british hero. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the new york times" reports on the death of 100-year-old british world war ii veteran captain tom moore. moore died yesterday after contracting the coronavirus. he captured the world's attention last year with his walks around his garden which raised $45 million for britain's health care workers battling the pandemic. last summer, he was knighted by queen elizabeth. the "associated press" reports the powerful winter storm that walloped the northeast turned to sleet in new england. the storm dumped up to three feet of snow in parts of new jersey and pennsylvania.

a winter storm warning is in effect for northern maine. yesterday the coastal town of york in southern maine was hit with snow, powerful winds, high tides, and flooding. more than 17 inches of snow fell in new york city which brought mixed reaction. >> i'm a summer person. so i'm one of those who can't stand this weather. >> snow days are for making cookies, playing in the snow, drinking hot chocolate, and watching movies. >> i love it. the storm also caused coronavirus vaccination sites to temporarily close, though, in several states. and "reuters" says a russian court sentenced opposition leader alexei navalny to 3.5 years in prison. he was kept in a glass cage in the courtroom yesterday. he outlined the shape of a heart to his wife who was there. the court ruled navalny violated his earlier probation when he flew to germany to be treated for poisoning. he will have to serve about 2.5

the company says the stores have been struggling for a long time, and the closures are permanent. on the cbs "money watch" now, amazon reached a settlement over drivers' tips, and mcdonald's is bringing back a green treat. diane king hall is in new york with those stories and more. good morning, diane. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. stock futures are pointing to a higher open, extending earlier gains. all three major indices ended in positive territory for a second straight session yesterday fueled by positive earnings reports and hope for president biden's new coronavirus relief bill. the dow rallied 475 points, posting its best single session gain since november. the nasdaq jumped 209 and the s&p 500 added 52. in amazon news, the e-commerce giant agreed to settle charges it skimmed tips for delivery drivers. the federal trade commission says amazon began pocketing tips from customers to drivers from drivers to customers between 2016 and 2019.

the giant assured drivers who were part of the amazon flex program that they were still receiving all of their tips. amazon has denied wrongdoing, though. uber is buying alcohol delivery service drizly for $1.1 billion. the ride hailing company will integrate the marketplace into its using eats app and will maintain a separate app for drizly which allows users to order beer, wine, and spirits directly to their location. the move comes as the pandemic deals a heavy blow to uber's ride-hailing services. and good news if you're craving mcdonald's iconic shamrock shake. the frosty drink will return to participating restaurants nationwide february 15th to mark the e first greeeen of sprining says.. the shshake is madade with grer colored sosoft serve i ice crea blended with a minty flavor on top with whipped cream. the oreo mcflurry is also making a comeback.

approached his home. the price of prescription drugs continues to rise, and a new study finds the u.s. pays more than most nations. nichelle medina reports. >> reporter: bonnie arnold suffers from powerful migraine headaches. >> i call them shotgun migraines because it feels like i got shot in the head. >> reporter: adding to that pain is the price of the prescription medicine she needs to take. >> they told me it was going to be $600. just for that month supply. her story is common. the rand corporation analyzed prescription costs in 33 nations including the u.s. they found prices in america are 256% higher on average. >> the u.s. is the only country out of all of those that we looked at where drug companies have free rein to set drug prices. >> reporter: other countries negotiate with drug makers but many government programs can't do that. >> medicare is prohibited by law to negotiate drug prices. >> reporter: another analysis finds major pharmaceutical companies are raising prices on
