i'm anne-marie green. we're going to begin with possible progress in the battle against the coronavirus. the number of new cases of infections and hospitalizations is declining. meantime, another vacccould ben u.s. researchers in the uk say the astrazeneca vaccine is 76% effective. they say it also slows transmission of the virus. it could take months before we see it here in america. debra alfarone is in washington. what is the holdup? >> reporter: well, it comes down to how the u.s. fda does things. there is this trial going on now, and we're going to get the data later this month. in the uk, they rely more on the information from the company whereas hererentif new coronavirus cases and hospitalizations are falling. >> back to the level we were before thanksgiving. >> reporter: cdc director dr.

>> reporter: though there's little evidence they will. >> if it goes forward without any changes from what was originally proposed, i would predict that not a single republican will support the $1.9 trillion plan. >> reporter: the president says he's willing to narrow the group of americans receiving the stimulus check but doesn't want to lower the amount of $1,400. there's universal agreement on the part of democrats to go big and bold with this plan. anne-marie? >> i can understand why. reporting from washington, thank you so much. officials in chicago meantime overnight extended remote learning for tens of thousands of public school students. the move comes after city, school, and teachers union officials were once again unable to reach an agreement over covid safety protocols. the nation's third-largest district has pitched a gradual return for pre-k to eighth grade students with no concrete plans yet for high schoolers. the chicago teachers union says the district's safety plan doesn't go far enough to protect teachers.

there's a crucial vote in the democratic-led house today. lawmakers will decide whether to remove republican marjorie taylor-greene from her committee assignments over her embrace of conspiracy theories. last night greene met with fellow republicans and apologized to them. minority leader kevin mccarthy explained why they decided not to take any action against her. >> i denounce all those comments that were brought up. everybody -- she came to -- she came inside our conference and denounced them, as well. she said she was wrong. she has reached out in other ways and forums. and nothing that she said has been based upon since she's been a member of congress. >> greene is on the budget house committee and the education and labor committee. before she was elected to orted ence against democrats. meantime, house republicans

yesterday voted to keep liz cheney, the number-three republican in the house, in her leadership role. the vote was 145-61 in a secret ballot. trump loyalists had called for her ouster after she voted to impeach mr. trump last month. a memorial service took place honoring capitol police officer brian sicknick. friends and family joined lawmakers in an emotional ceremony yesterday paying tribute to the 42-year-old. he died after being injured in the violent siege of t his family says that it was always his dream to become a police officer. he joined the capitol police in 2008 after serving in the military. >> brian was a peacekeeper who loved his dogs and his girlfriend, sandra, and his family and the new jersey devils. he was caught in the wrong place at the wrong time and on a day when peace was shattered. >> officer sicknick was laid to

rest in a private ceremony at arlington national cemetery. and prosecutors have asked a judge for a new arrest warrant for kenosha shooting suspect kyle rittenhouse. they say he failed to notify them that he moved. he's charged with shooting three people, killing two during a protest over police brutality in wisconsin last august. he was 17 at the time. rittenhouse was arrested but was later released in november after posting $2 million bail. his lawyers say that he is at a safe house due to threats. the mother of a 9-year-old black girl pepper sprayed by police in rochester, new york, is speaking out about the incident and wonders whether race was a factor. >> she was one of their children, they wouldn't have >> elba pope says she called police last week after a heated argument with her spouse. she told officers that her daughter was headed toward a meltdown and requested a mental

and growing concerns about china's human rights record. a group of more than 180 rights groups issued an open letter yesterday calling on countries to boycott the games. and we're just a few days away from super bowl lv between the bucs and the chiefs. of course everything is different this year because of the pandemic. skyler henry is in tampa. so obviously there are concerns over covid. tampa feels like it's ready. how is the city preparing for thousands of people from all across the country to descend on it? not as many people as in other super bowls, but still there will be a lot of new people there. >> reporter: yeah, well tampa is no stranger to super bowls. this is the fifth time that the e to the pandemic.e big game.si9 but based off of the people that we spoke with who put these events on, they've been preparing for a little more than a year, working on the logistics, trying to figure out

where everyone is going to be. with the threat of the pandemic, trying to make sure that everyone does so safely. so when you take into account social distancing and trying to make sure that you don't have large crowds gathering in certain areas, not only around the stadium but really throughout the city here. shoul mayor in tampa put out an ordinance or a mandate i should say for those to be wearing masks when they're at certain facilities throughout the city here. a lot of people taking the necessary precautions here. it's been a group effort working with a lot of different agencies, as well as the nfl, to try to make sure this event is as safe as possible. we were at the super bowl experience yesterday. so it gave us a pretty good look in terms. hw everyone is preparing for the big game in a few days. >> yeah. i want to talk about that because we know that there's limited seating inside the stadium. anybody hasn't been there is sort of this big event surrounding the super bowl.

it's where fans can go and hang out. they can throw balls. try, you know, football moves that they see their favorite players doing. it's interactive. i was surprised it was still happening. how did they adjust to deal with the concerns about the pandemic? >> reporter: right. well, really the gift here was the fact that the super bowl is in tampa. sell in tampa. you know, you know how the super bowl bounces around from city to city every year. we spoke with the director of special events for the nfl yesterday who essentially said that if this were in a cold-weather city or a city where the risk of the pandemic was a little bit more severe she doesn't know that this event would have been able to happen because she would have tried to have done something indoors, and that simply could not happen. so the fact that this was outside really made it work for all those that came out here. >> well, that's very good. you know, i know tampa's hoping for a bit of an economic boost.
