battle against the coronavirus. there could soon be a third vaccine here in the u.s. johnson & johnson is asking u.s. regulators to authorize its single-shot for emergency use. it's 85% effective against severe cases of covid. meantime, the biden administration is reportedly weighing a plan to send masks to every american. the president has asked everyone to wear masks in his first 100 days in office. so debra alfarone is in washington. wearing masks, unfortunately, has become now this sort of heated political issue. >> reporter: absolutely. and nowhere is it more of a heated political issue than in wisconsin, anne-marie. that's where the republican legislature is battling with the democratic governor over the use of the most important tool we have right now to try and stop the spread of this deadly virus. help in the vaccination effort may be on the way. johnson & johnson is seeking emergency approval for its vaccine when an fda advisory

panel meets at the end of the month. >> clearly we don't have enough of the moderna, pfizer vaccines right at this point to deal with the pandemic in the u.s., let alone the world. >> reporter: the pharma giant reported the vaccine to be 85% protective against serious covid symptoms. it requires one dose and can stay in a refrigerator for months. >> getting vaccinated, we have supply constraints. one thing we don't have a supply constraint on is masking. >> reporter: wisconsin has a new mask mandate. it went into effect an hour after the old one was repealed by the state legislature. >> wearing a mask is most basic thing we can do to keep each other safe. >> reporter: republicans claim governor tony evers doesn't have the power to issue the order and may try to repeal it again. >> he's decided that he never needs to cooperate with us, and he can just do what he wants. >> reporter: here in washington, democrats hope to finish crafting the covid relief bill this month. the senate worked throughout the night in a marathon session

known as vote-arama with hundreds of amendments filed. >> reporter: rosen, rounds -- >> reporter: part of the process that will allow democrats to pass the final bill without republican support. president biden has promised the american people $1,400 stimulus checks. where he says he may negotiate, though, is the salary cap to receive one. anne-marie? >> debra alfarone in washington. thank you. still on capitol hill now, the u.s. house voted to remove republican representative marjorie taylor-greene from two committees as punishment for her support of conspiracy theories and violence against democrats. 11 republicans joined the democrats in last night's vote. in a floor speech she walked back past comments. she says she believes school shootings and the 9/11 attacks were real.

>> i was allowed to believe things that weren't true, and i would ask questions about them and talk about them. and that is absolutely what i regret. >> on twitter, greene said that she will be holding a news conference later on this morning. former president trump is rejecting a request for him to testify in his historic impeachment trial in the senate next week. house democrats yesterday asked mr. trump to testify. mr. trump's lawyers call the request a public relations stunt. he is charged with inciting a deadly insurrection last month when rioters broke into the capitol to interrupt the electoral vote count. in a new video, mexico's president says that he's in good health and recovering from the coronavirus. president andres manuel lopez obrador made the announcement yesterday. he went on to say that he tested negative for covid. the 67-year-old announced last sunday that he had contracted the virus but had only mild symptoms. and we are just over 48

hours away from the biggest football game in the world. super bowl lv between the kansas buccaneers. thmpba the bucs are in tampa already. they're the first nfl team ever to host a super bowl game that they're playing in. the chiefs are still in kansas city. they'll arrive in tampa tomorrow. there will be 22,000 fans at sunday's game, and everyone will be properly distanced. they'll receive masks and wipes. commissioner roger goodell talked about efforts to put on a safe game and season. >> this was a year where we were all challenged. we all had to adapt. and we had to find innovative solutions to challenges. >> skyler henry's in tampa. a large portion of the fans will be vaccinated health care workers and special guests of the nfl. you know, getting tickets to the super bowl, that's a really big deal. what were some of the reactions when they learned that they were going to be invited to this big

game? >> reporter: goornyoone ofealth care worker we spoke with yesterday. he's a chaplain at a new york city hospital. that role as a health care worker when arguably they have just as intimate if not closer relationships with patients than doctors and nurses. we spoke with him yesterday. he told us about what it was like going through the pandemic, especially during the spike in new york city. he also happens to be a huge, lifelong kansas city chiefs fan. somehow, new england patriots owner, robert kraft, got wind of his story and invited him along with a few of his colleagues down here to tampa. so he is headed down here on thn enjoy e game, as well. souame struggles with the pandemic, learning about it, also figuring

the man who allegedly stormed the capitol last month while wearing face paints and a furry hat with horns is in a new jail this morning. a federal judge ordered jacob chansley transferred from washington, d.c., to a jail in virginia yesterday. his lawyer argued his client had not eaten in nine days because organic food was not available at the d.c. jail. it is available in virginia. hunter biden is releasing a memoir, and the price of deploying the national guard, those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "bloomberg" reports it costs $480 million to deploy national guard troops in washington after the riot at the capitol. about 25,000 troops were sent to

washington. military officials say the money includes transportation costs, salaries, benefits, and housing. about 5,000 soldiers are expected to remain in washington through the middle of next month. "the des moines register" says a massive crash involve being 40 vehicles closed parts of an iowa highway. traffic on interstate 80 near newton, about 35 miles east of des moines, backed up for miles yesterday after the chain-reaction collision in blizzard conditions. the pileup included tractor-trailers and two state police cars. >> the ultimate factor is that people are drying too fast for the conditions out here. and when they get going too fast, they're not able to react and brake in time. that's what we see with these multi-vehicle collisions. >> several people suffered serious injuries. and "the new york times" says president biden's son, hunter, is releasing a memoir, "beautiful things." it will center on hunter's struggles with addiction and drug abuse while dealing with family tragedy, including the

social media-driven frenzy drove its stock up nearly 3,000%. cruise ships will remain banned in canadian waters until next year. the country's transport minister says cruise vessels carrying 100 or more passengers pose a thoscarrying 12 leing the coastal waters. the transport minister said it would protect from the risk of the virus. if you love food and space, you could earn half a million bucks. it's part of the deep space food challenge cooked up by nasa. the agency wants to pay someone who can determine how to get fresh food to future space explorers instead of the freeze-dried meals. deliveries are virtually impossible on a deep space mission. if you're up for the challenge, ideas must be submitted by the end of july. >> two of my favorite things --

welcomed kansas's city mayor ahead of the super bowl. they exchanged gifts representing the two cities including craft beers, cigars, and kansas city barbecue. the tampa bay bucs will be the first team to ever play a super bowl in its home stadium. and of course, just a gentle reminder -- you can watch the game here on cbs, and it's going to be quite a production. cbs sports will introduce new innovations and camera angles that have never been used at a super bowl before. there will be 120 cameras from the ground to the air including 32 cameras embedded into eight end zone pile-ons. >> it gets bigger every year and more exciting and more challenge willing. we've been planning this for over a year now. we're just happy to be here. >> cbs sports is also deploying the trolley cam. it will provide a look at the players from a vantage point never seen before at the super bowl. the camera can travel up to 65 miles per hour from one end of

it isn't just about football -- eating during sunday's showdown has become its own national pastime. even though the pandemic is keeping many people from gathering, americans still plan to chow down. nancy chen explains. >> reporter: you can find all kind of food at the anchor bar in buffalo, new york, but it's best known for one dish -- >> they've been around since 1935. of course in 1964 invented the buffalo chicken wing. >> reporter: chicken wings are a super bowl staple. and the big game is usually big business at anchor bar's 14 locations nationwide. just not this year. >> the restaurant really took a major hit all throughout the pandemic. >> reporter: the national retail federation says only 28% of people to plan to go to a party or a bar for the game. a record low in the survey's history. some 186 million americans will still be watching. and whether it's alone or in

smaller groups, they plan to spend more than $10 billion on food and beverages. anchor bar's seeing some of that money. shipping orders for the famous wings are soaring. >> it's the busiest week ever we've had in the history of shipping wings. >> reporter: it's not just wings that people want. americans are also picking up chips and snacks. just because you're not with your friends doesn't mean you're going to stop eating. >> that's right. that's right. >> reporter: mike del pozzo is with frito-lay which sells a number of recognizable brands. the company's anticipating a 21% increase in snacking over last year's super bowl sunday. they're producing 70 million pounds of snacks this week alone. >> snacking has been accelerating quite a bit throughout the pandemic. people are snacking about 40% more than they did prior to. and we anticipate that will continue through the super bowl. >> reporter: no matter who wins on sunday, it appears america's love of food will remain undefeated. nancy chen, cbs news, new york.
