impeachment trial of former president trump gets under way in just hours. he is charged with inciting the deadly riot at the u.s. capitol last month. but mr. trump's defense lawyers say his words are protected by the first amendment. debra alfarone is in washington. debra, that is part of the argument that they are building. what can we expect today? >> reporter: well, anne-marie, we expect today they're going to have about four hours to talk about whether impeaching a former a former president is even constitutional. they're going to find that it is and head into the trial. advisers to former president donald trump are confident they're heading into the second impeachment trial today. >> we already know how this is going to turn out. >>oremts te least 17 incited an insurrection january 6th. >> if you don't fight like hell you're not going to have a capitol anymore.

>> reporter: in a 78-page brief, mr. trump's lawyers called it sterile and thin. to the democracy and rights we hold dear. >> really what we're seeing is cancel culture vee the constitution. >> reporter: house democrats it was the most egregious crime. after committed by a president. >> sweeping something like under the rug. >> reporter: on whether the senate will try the former president expecting each side will have up to 16 hours to make their case. >> the only logical conclusion is that donald trump could be convicted. >> reporter: new york democrat hakim jeffries was an impeachment manager in mr. trump's first trial. >> connecting the dots is going to be an important part of what the house manages do, as it relates to how we arrive at

january 6th connected to the big lie that donald trump told. >> reporter: democrats are not expected to call any witnesses, instead, choosing to show video evidence. and the goal of using that video evidence is to try to bring everybody back in the room to that day and how they felt on that specific day. anne-marie. >> debra alfarone in washington, debra, thanks. >> so, cbs news will bring you coverage of the opening of the second impeachment trial of former president trump in a special report. we expect the senate to begin around 1:00 p.m. eastern, 10:00 a.m. pacific. texas represent can representative ron wright died after being admitted to the hospital with the coronavirus. he's the first sitting member of the congress to die after getting covid. wright's office announced he died sunday shortly after being sworn in. at the time the 67-year-old was experiencing minor symptoms but overall felt okay. wright had also battled lung cancer. transportation secretary

pete buttigieg says that he will quarantine for two weeks as a precaution. a member of his security detail tested positive for the coronavirus yesterday. the agent had been in close contact with buttigieg. the former south bend mayor has also since tested negative and does not have symptoms. meantime, there's a promising trend in the fight against the coronavirus. new cases and hospitalizations are dropping across the country. a little bit of good news. but a new contagious strain is threatening to reverse the progress, that strain first detected in the uk, is now in at least 34 states. the cdc said florida has reported the most variant cases and this comes as more states slowly reopen services. here's chris martinez. >> reporter: fewer people are going to the hospital because of the coronavirus but the u.s. death rate keeps climbing. >> please continue to the wear a mask and stay six feet apart from people you don't live with. >> reporter: officials are

keeping an eye on the stats following the super bowl, following reports of large parties. new variants first detected in the uk, south africa and brazil are spreading across the country with the strain found in the uk moving the fastest. >> it could become dominant by the end of march. >> reporter: but dr. anthony fauci says the good news is that the current vaccines are effective against it. with the promise vaccines will slow the spread, the cdc director says now is not the time to be relaxing restrictions. >> we have yet to control the pandemic. we have to keep all of the mitigation efforts at play here. ♪ >> reporter: all church services resumed again in california following the supreme court ruling. >> i'm absolutely in favor of it. we're allowed to go to walmart. >> reporter: restaurants, gyms, movie theaters in massachusetts increased capacity to 40% indoor dining at reduced capacity starts in new york city on friday.

1977, wilson continued as a solo artist. mary wilson was 76 years old. and authorities are on the hunt for a hacker who apparently tried to taint a public water supply in florida with a potentially harmful chemical ahead of the super bowl. cbs news has learned that investigators who monitored the water plant in the city of oldsmar noticed breaches starting last friday morning. the city is located about 30 miles away from raymond james stadium in tampa. the suspec controlled the computer system's mouse remotely and changed the sodium hydroxide in the water to dangerous levels. >> this is obviously a significant and potentially dangerous increase. sodium hydroxide also known as lye is the main ingredient in liquid drain cleaners. >> fortunately, the plant operator immediately changed everything back to safe levels. and the city's 15,000 residents were not at risk. and at least 26 people are dead and more than 160 are missing after a huge chunk of a

himalayan glacier in northern india broke off sending a torrent of water down the mountain. emergency crews worked into the night to rescue more than three dozen power plant workers trapped in a tunnel after the incident on sunday. the event triggered a massive deluge that washed away dams at hydropower plants and several bridges and roads. the washington football team is reportedly putting its cheerleading program on pause. sources tell us the washington affiliate wusa the move is part of a larger rebranding effort to make changes in the fan experience. wusa says that the team's cheerleading director has been removed from her position. it comes amid the allegations over the team sexual harassment and mistreatment of female

employees. a pickup truck dove off an exit ramp in michigan and the latest on the kobe bryant investigation. those are some the headlines on the morning stand. >> the "los angeles times" reports investigators are set to announce their findings today into what caused the helicopter crash that killed kobe bryant last year. safety board is expected to vote on the probable cause and make recommendations to prevent future accidents. bryant, his daughter and seven others were flying to a youth basketball tournament in southern california when the chopper crashed into a hillside in thick fog. the grand rapids press said the investigation into a deadly cannon explosion at a michigan baby shower continues. a 26-year-old man was killed saturday when he was hit by metal shrapnel from a cannon at a hour for the baby's impending birth. police say the man was standing outside about 10 to 15 feet away from the cannon when the homeowner fired.

>> he decided to shoot off the cannon he had done it several other times but this time, we suspected he put too much gunpowder into it and fractured the device and the entire cannon exploded. >> police say nobody else was hit by the shrapnel, and the incident was not part of a gender reveal. and the milwaukee journal sentinel said a driver is lucky to be alive after his pickup truck fell 70 feet. the wisconsin department of transportation released video of saturday's action and shows the truck crashing into a side of a ramp and toppling over it. it landed on the road below when deputies arrived at the scene, they found the truck in an upright position. the driver was conscious and breathing and appeared to be okay. remarkable still ahead now, paying for twitter. the social media platform considers adding subscription fees for certain services and features. my heart doesn't pump h blood so my doctor gave me

delta air lines says it plans to leave middle seats empty through spring break and easter, as we continue to deal with the pandemic. the airline says it will limit capacity on flights through april 30th. delta says groups of three or more passengers can choose to sit together. a spokesman for the airline said it will monitor virus cases and vaccination rates as it reassesses its seating policy. on the "cbs money watch" now, a new report on the effect of raising the minimum wage and there might be a fee to follow someone on twitter. diane king hall is in new york with that and more. good morning, diane. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. uh-oh, we'll get to twitter in a minute. let's start withook a stocks. they're indicating slightly

lower after all three indexes rallied yesterday. investors have been optimistic about additional coronavirus-related stimulus and quick recovery. yesterday, the dow jumped 237 points hitting a new record. the nasdaq rallied 131 posting a six-day winning streak, so, too, did the s&p 500 adding 28 points. a new government report says raising the minimum wage would have mixed results. the congressional budget office found that increasing base pay to $15 an hour would lift 900,000 people out of poverty but the study by the budget watchdog also found the move would also add to joblessness and push the federal deficit higher by about $54 billion over a decade. house democrats want to include a $15 minimum wage in the coronavirus relief bill but it's unclear that will happen. you could soon buy a tesla vehicle with bitcoin. investing $1.5 billion in the

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. and away we go. a father in latvia wanted his kids to have something to do in the winter so he built a huge sledding track in the family's backyard. he started building the 558-foot track almost six years ago. bobsleds riding the track can go as fast as 19 miles an hour. and it takes almost a minute to go around.

someone's winning at the dad game. celebrities are rallying around singer britney spears following last week's release of a new documentary about her life. sarah jessica parker and bette midler tweeted the hash tag free britney which was created by some of her fans. "the new york times" produced the film "framing britney spears" and it follows her rise to fame, how she was treated by the media and her ongoing battle with her dad over a court-ordered conservatorship that gives him control over her financial and personal affairs. disney is reopening part of california's adventure park next month. the company announced it will allow outdoor dining at the park for a limited time. it comes about a year after disney shut its theme parks due to the pandemic. about 1,000 workers will return to work. tens of thousands of workers have been furloughed or laid off since last year. the park's other attractions were not be part of the limited reopening.

oldsmar, right outside of tampa, just two days before the super bowl. fortunately, the plant operator noticed and reduced the chemicals back to safe levels. pediatricians say that they are seeing the impact of climate change in children from asthma to allergies to premature births, they are now calling for action. nancy chen explains. >> reporter: as wildfires burned near san francisco last summer, pediatrician lisa patel says she saw first hand how climate change can affect health. >> around late september, i remember shift after shift, i had several deliveries that i would go to on each shift of moms that were coming into labor about a month to two months early. >> reporter: previous studies show air pollution and excess heat can cause premature labor. the american academy of pediatrics calls climate change one of the top health threats to children around the world. what are the effects of climate

change on children? >> everything you can imagine. and i think that's why so many of us are involved in this. now, we understand that climate change affects every part of our bodies and our health. >> reporter: that includes pollution triggered asthma, severe allergies with longer allergy seasons and heat illnesses with rising temperatures. in an effort to protect families u.s. pediatricians across the country are banning together and lobbying lawmakers for change. climate change advocates with the american academy of pediatrics are pushing for new laws on renewable energy, passing climate regulations and other conditions. montana pediatrician lori byron founded the mission after displaced families on the american-indian reservation where she worked. >> whether moving out of your home, sometimes for farmers or ranchers losing their farm or livestock, all of those things that affect us as a society affect our children.
