i'm anne-marie green. democratic managers will continue to lay out their arguments today in the second impeachment trial of former president trump. yesterday they showed stunning new video from the deadly u.s. capitol riot last month. some of the clips show how close lawmakers were to danger as a mob broke into the capitol on january 6th. one security camera shows officer eugene goodman warning senator mitt romney about rioters coming his way. romney turned around and dashed in the other direction. debra alfarone is in washington. what did the house democrats try to prove by showing all of this new video? you really got the sense that they were trying to personalize what happened and speak directly to the senators. >> reporter: absolutely, anne-marie. some of them seemed unfazed. but what they really want to show is that these rioters came here to cause chaos and to inflict violence upon lawmakers on both sides of the aisle, not just democrats.

and they were here wearing the former president's name on their shirts and on flags, showing how close they came, very close to these lawmakers, and that anyone could have been hurt or killed. house impeachment managers unveiled never-before-seen security footage of the capitol riot in the trial of former president trump. >> on january 6th, president trump left everyone in this capitol for dead. >> reporter: in one video, vice president mike pence is seen being rushed to safety as the crowd outside chanted for his death. [ chants ] this video taken by a rioter shows them looking for house speaker nancy pelosi. >> oh, nancy? >> reporter: her staff barricaded themselves in a conference room, not long before rioters tried and failed to get in. >> and so they came draped in trump's flag and used our flag, the american flag, to batter and

to bludgeon. >> reporter: the democratic prosecutors say mr. trump was not an innocent bystander. >> if you don't fight like hell -- >> reporter: that he did nothing to stop the attack which happened as lawmakers were certifying the 2020 election. >> they believed that they were doing this for him. >> reporter: house impeachment managers will finish their argument today. then on friday mr. trump's lawyers have two days to make their case. >> the evidence that has been presented thus far is pretty damning. >> reporter: some republicans like alaska's lisa murkowski say it's tough to see everything laid out. >> we lived it once. and that was awful. >> reporter: one capitol police officer died, and more than 100 were injured that day. and there needs to be 17 votes from the gop to convict. some republican senators say, though, that the rioters are the ones who are responsible, not mr. trump. and in fact, senator rand paul of kentucky walked out when they were showing video of how close

those rioters got to vp mike pence. anne-marie? >> wow, that is really disappointing when you consider the fact that he's supposed to be a juror -- jurors generally don't walk out in the middle of arguments. debra alfarone in washington. thank you. so the race to vaccinate americans takes a major step today. the u.s. government is starting shipping vaccines to 6,500 pharmacies coast to coast, especially to those in underserved areas. the initiative targets major chains including cvs and walgreens, but eligible people for the vaccine will have to make an appointment. and new data from the cdc shows 96% of americans are getting their second shot of the vaccine within four days of their scheduled dose. so far more than ten million people in the u.s. have received two shots. the cdc is also giving new guidance on wearing masks. as concerns grow about different variants of the covid virus

spreading rapidly nationwide. here's carter evans. >> reporter: a disturbing new covid development in california. the arrival of the more aggressive variant first discovered in south africa. >> two cases have been reported through stanford. one in alameda county and one in santa clara county. the issue of mutations is top of mind. >> reporter: the number of known variant cases in the u.s. spiked 73% in the last week alone, with five states reporting the south african variant. another strain first identified in the uk is now in 34 states including florida which has seen nearly a 50% increase since sunday. university of miami pathologist dr. david andrews is trying to track the variants. >> i really want to increase our ability to sequence more of this virus to understand more about its biological behavior. >> reporter: infectious disease dr. jonathan lee tracked an immunocompromised patient in boston sick with a covid variant for five months before he died.

during that time, the virus inside him mutated more than 20 times. >> the more rapid evolution and mutations can develop in these individuals, and we really need to be paying attention to them. >> reporter: and there is promising news on double masking. the cdc now says wearing a medical mask under a cloth mask substantially improved containment of covid-19 and can also protect the wearer from infection. cbs news chief medical correspondent, dr. jon lapook -- >> these experiments from the cdc were remarkable. they showed that if you wear two masks and they're well fitted, that's the thing, that you can have more than 95% protection from the aerosols that you otherwise might get. >> reporter: carter evans, cbs news. the first wave of chicago public school students will return to the classroom today for the first time in nearly a year. the move comes after the teachers union struck a deal with a covid safety plan with the nation's third-largest school district. cbs news has learned that some

of the terms include more teacher vaccinations and guidelines for school closings if t's sn coronavirus cases. president biden and voyeice president areas made their first visit to the pentagon and took part in an event honoring black service members. the president and vice president were greeted by the first black secretary of defense in u.s. hour, lloyd austin. >> their visit to the pentagon shows the importance that they place on our national security. and importantly, the deep value that they place in the men and women of our department. >> during his speech, mr. biden vowed to never politicize the military. and he also pressed the need to better support americans who are seg countrrdle larry flynt, the founder of "hustler" magazine, has died. flynt built an adult entertainment empire while championing first amendment rights. he often clashed with feminist

using a racial slur. wallen had already apologized but posted a video on social media last night explaining his actions. he asked fans not to downplay the racist language he was caught saying. wallen said that he has accepted invitations from black organizations, executives, and leaders to have honest conversations. and sports fans in new york have something to cheer about, as well. charges against bruce springsteen. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "usa today" says bruce springsteen faces drunk driving charges in his home state of new jersey. springsteen was arrested last november in the gateway national recreation area on the jersey coast. he was cited for driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, and consuming alcohol in a closed area. springsteen lives about 12 miles from where he was arrested. he appeared in a new ad for the automaker jeep during sunday's super bowl. jeep says it will now pause the

commercial. and "the new york times" reports new york state will soon allow fans to attend sports and entertainment events. yesterday governor andrew cuomo said large stadiums and arenas can start opening february 23rd. >> plan has to be approved by the state department of health. it's 10% of capacity for arenas 10,000 and above. >> everyone attending will have to show proof of a negative coronavirus pcr test taken within 72 hours of an event. fans will also have to stay socially distant and wear face coverings. barclay center in brooklyn has already received state approval to reopen for a nets game february 23rd. still ahead, celebrating valentine's day but safely. health experts suggest taking your date outdoors to decrease covid risks. covid risks. where can a healthier heart lead you? for people with heart failure taking entresto, it may lead to a world of possibilities.

500 shed a point. president biden is re-evaluating attempts by former president trump to ban tiktok. the biden administration is asking a court to delay a legal dispute over the proposed ban on the chinese-owned video-sharing app. the u.s. government is undertaking a broader review of the national security threats posed by chinese technology companies. mr. trump claimed tiktok, which has about 100 million american users, was collecting data and threatened to blacklist the app. meantime, ford is designing a medical-grade mask that will allow people who are hearing impaired to read lips. the automaker has developed a face mask with clear panels that it says filters most airborne particles. the leader of ford's ppe manufacturing effort says the mask will also improve interactions between doctors and patients along with teachers and students. right now the mask is still in development, and its filtration ability has not yet been approved by the federal government.

brady continued his passing accuracy while on the water. he tossed the championship lombardi trophy to his teammates on another boat, including this pass to tight end cameron brate. he called it the best catch of his life. i bet. dallas mavericks owner mark cuban reversed course and said that the national anthem will be played before home games. players along with cuban stood for the anthem last night as the mavs hosted the atlanta hawks. the mavericks had not played the national anthem since the start of the season at the request of cuban. yesterday the nba said all teams will be required to play the "star-spangled banner" now that arenas are starting to allow fans. a minnesota lawmaker caused a bit of a stir during a virtual congressional hearing when he got stuck upside down. >> during covid-19, we must make sure that our nation's sole proprietors and the smallest of small businesses receive timely --
