i'm anne-marie green. former president trump's defense lawyers will take the senate floor in just a few hours in his second impeachment trial. yesterday prosecutors wrapped up their arguments. they warned mr. trump could sow new violence like the deadly siege on the capitol last month if he's not barred from holding office again. debra alfarone is in washington. what strategy is mr. trump's legal team planning? >> reporter: well, it's likely that they're going to argue about the first amendment protecting their client, former president trump's, tweets and speech. this is an argument that's already been argued head on by house impeachment managers. >> we humbly, humbly ask you to convict -- >> reporter: house managers concluded their arguments in the impeachment trial of former president trump with a warning. >> is there any political leader in this room who believes that if he's ever allowed by the senate to get back into the oval

office, donald trump would stop inciting violence to get his way? would you bet the lives of more police officers on that? >> reporter: on thursday, democrats showed how mr. trump's supporters were inspired by his rhetoric when they stormed the u.s. capitol. >> i thought i was following my president. i thought i was following what we were called to do. >> in that powder keg that he had created, he struck a match, and he aimed it straight at this building. >> reporter: mr. trump's lawyers have up to 16 hours over two days to present their defense, but they say they'll only need a few hours to rebut the democrats' case. >> the evidence they have under no circumstances would make out a case for incitement. >> reporter: the defense is expected to argue that it's too late to convict mr. trump now that he's out of office and will use some of his own words on january 6th. >> to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard. >> reporter: louisiana republican bill cassidy says the former president's team does need to answer some questions.

>> if one of the charges is that you should have called out people, you didn't, even though it was clear that the police officers were under assault, please explain that. >> reporter: if the defense rests today, the final vote could come this weekend. and the prosecution has a tough mountain to climb. they need 17 republican votes to convict. anne-marie? >> yeah. that will not be easy. debra alfarone in washington. thank you. so by the end of the summer, some 300 million americans could be vaccinated against the coronavirus. president biden said the u.s. will have enough vaccine supply to hit that goal. he toured the national institutes of health complex outside washington, d.c., yesterday. the facility created the covid-19 vaccine currently manufactured by moderna. right now nearly 35 million people have received at least one dose, and more than 11 million have received both doses.

all this comes, of course, as firearm cease can begin to distribute doses to eligible people. >> reporter: a new federal program to distribute one million vaccine doses a week to select pharmacies is under way with the goal of reaching underserved communities. >> with covid, it's so much harder for the community to get to the doctor, and we're in a perfect proximity to help people that maybe couldn't have made it to one of the large clinics. >> reporter: the new initiative comes as millions of americans search for vaccine appointments. >> this is my third place today. >> reporter: supply problems persist. los angeles says it will temporarily close five mass vaccination sites including dodger stadium on friday because they don't have enough doses. california overtook new york thursday for the state with the most covid-19 deaths, with nearly 45,500 deaths. there is encouraging news. the cdc says covid deaths

nationwide are expected to decline in the coming weeks. the pandemic is forcing new york city's lunar new year celebration to go virtual. >> we specifically asked people not to come down and to celebrate with us virtually. >> reporter: with the annual parade postponed until late spring. michael george, cbs news, new york. the cdc is expected to roll out guidelines today on how k-through-12 schools should reopen. according to a draft memo obtained by cbs news, there will be four color-coded zones -- blue, yellow, orange, and red. schools can reopen if there's a low community spread of covid. if there's a high level, then virtual learning is recommended. officials told cbs news the guidelines are still being finalized. and there are new details being reported about the health of former president trump after he got covid last october. "the new york times" says that his condition was worse than publicly acknowledged.

there was reportedly concern that mr. trump would need to be put on a ventilator because his oxygen levels were low. he spent several days at walter reed national military medical center in early october before returning to the white house. chilly, arctic air is gripping much ofhe u t. this morning. severe winter weather triggered a massive deadly car pileup in texas. this dramatic scene played out yesterday on interstate 35 near downtown fort worth. it shows tractor-trailers and cars skidding out of control on the icy road and slamming into one another. more than 130 vehicles were involved in the crash. >> for many of us, this is a career event. you know, many of us have been in this profession for a very long time. we train for this type of scenario, but you never expect it to happen. >> at least six people were killed, more than three dozen people were injured and taken to local hospitals. a woman who posed as a german heiress is reportedly out from behind bars.

the ban is in response to a coronavirus outbreak at one of the quarantined hotels in melbourne. the local government announced a five-day lockdown on all area residents. and we are remembering a jazz legend. as well there was a ruling in the britney spears hearing. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "usa today" reports a california judge ruled that britney spears' father could continue to manage her finances, but it has to be done in conjunction with a private financial company. it was a small victory for spears who is seeking greater control over her own life and career. in 2008 her father was granted a legal conservatorship after she went through a mental crisis. >> it usually happens for people who are ill physically or mentally, or they're older. and the court appoints someone

to take charge of that person's affairs. >> the ruling follows a recent "new york times" documentary on spears' legal battle to remove her father from the conservatorship. more than 9,000 recovering coronavirus patients in new york state were released from hospitals and sent to nursing homes in the early days of the pandemic. according to records obtained by the "ap," the number of patients sent to nursing homes is more than 40% higher than what the state health department previously indicated. the directive last march from andrew cuomo was intended to free up hospital space. some say it helped spread the virus among nursing home residents. the cuomo administration denies that. and the "washington post" reports on the death of jazz great chick corea. corea died tuesday in florida from a rare form of cancer. he was considered one of the most versatile and influential jazz pianists of his generation. corea helped develop the electronic fusion style of music with miles davis. he won 23 grammys during his six-decade career, more than any other jazz performer. he was nominated for two grammy

and dehumanizing practices. on the cbs "money watch" now, farm workers in a california city are getting extra pay as essential workers. and grapenuts cereal is returning after a shortage. diane king hall is in new york with those stories and more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. stock futures are indicating a lower open this morning. the three major indices ended mixed yesterday as investors weighed stimulus prospects versus the latest economic data. the dow ultimately fell seven points. the nasdaq gained 53 points, ending at a fresh record, so, too, did the s&p 500 which added six points. coachella, california, has become the first u.s. city to approve so-called hero pay for farm workers. the city council passed the measure wednesday night. it requires an additional $4 per hour for workers in some agricultural operations, as well as grocery stores, pharmacies, and restaurants. the emergency ordinance applies to businesses with more than 300 people and runs for at least 120 days. disney swung to a surprise

try bot. our top stories this morning -- former president trump's defense lawyers will take to the senate floor today. his legal team says that it will only need a few hours to rebut the democrats' case in his historic impeachment trial. house impeachment managers yesterday warned mr. trump could stoke new violence if he's not convicted. and yesterday president biden finalized deals to buy 200 million more coronavirus vaccine doses from pfizer and moderna by the end of july. this adds to the doses already scheduled to be delivered by the two companies, and this means mr. biden could make good on his promise to have all americans vaccinated by midsummer.

covid-19 has strained businesses around the country, especially the nation's chinatowns. with the start of the lunar new year, there is some hope. nancy chen explains. ♪ >> reporter: when the sun sets over new york's chinatown, mott street lights up. 250 lanterns have turned back the darkness of winter. >> all positive vibes down here. this is what we need for the neighborhood. >> reporter: patrick mock grew up in the neighborhood and manages a local bakery. he watched covid-19 turn the area into a ghost town. >> the damage of 9/11, hurricanes sandy, was huge. but we rebounded from it. but what really hit us hard was covid-19. >> reporter: dozens of businesses have shuttered, and community leaders believe many are gone for good. >> many of these businesses are small, they're small in nature. they're not the businesses that have cash flow or a reserve to
