one grocery store's remarkable gesture when the power went out. captioning funded by cbs good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we are going to begin with a tough milestone. almost one year into the pandemic, the u.s. is expected to surpass 500,000 covid deaths today. it president biden will observe a moment of silence and hold a candle-lighting ceremony at the white house. he will also deliver remarks at sunset to honor those who lost their lives. there might be some hope as the number of people hospitalized with covid is down nationwide. and an average of 1.4 million vaccine doses are being administered every day. nancy chen has the latest from new york. >> reporter: close to a year into america's battle with covid-19, loading health experts -- leading health experts say there's reason to be hopeful. >> we should be optimistic. i think we're going to see infection rates decline into the spring and summer. now up they're falling dramatically. i think the trends are likely to

killed more americans than those who o died i in battttle in n ws iand iiiicombined. nancy chen, cbs news, new york. over the weekend, dr. fauci also talked about wearing masks. he said that it's possible americans will still need them next year as the u.s. tries to get control of the virus. >> i want to see it go way down. when it goes way down and the overwhelming majority of the people in the population are vaccinated, then i would feel comfortable in saying, you know, we need pull back on the masks. we don't need to have masks. >> ahead on "cbs this morning," dr. anthony fauci will join us to talk more about masks, the number of covid deaths, and the latest on the country's vaccine distribution. united airlines is grounding two dozen boeing aircraft with the same type of engine involved in a frightening incident over a denver suburb there weekend. the plane headed to honolulu

experienced engine failure shortly after takeoff on saturday, raining large chunks of in bloomfield causing a lot of damage. debra alfarone is tracking that investigation. the faa is also taking action. >> reporter: they absolutely are, anne-marie, and they want boeing to step up their inspections for the 777 with this specific type of engine in it. boeing is going a step further. they say they want all of these planes with this engine grounded until the faa comes up with a specific way they want them inspected. >> mayday -- >> reporter: united airlines has pulled from service all of us it boeing 777 planes with a certain pratt and whitney engine after one exploded shortlyho was a bum on the plane. >> reporter: just minutes into flight 328 f blades were fractured, and the front had come off. >> we got to about 10,000 feet. the captain said that we're getting up to our cruising

altitude, and -- before he even got off the intercom, there was a loud explosion. >> reporter: many of the 229 passengers on board prepared for the worst. >> all i kept thinking is this could be my time. >> reporter: the ten-person crew was praised for getting this plane safely back to denver international airport. >> initially i think it was panic. but i think people did a good job of calming down. >> reporter: on the ground -- [ screams ] debris rained down on the terrified residents of broomfield, colorado. >> it sounded like a war zone around here. >> next thing you know we heard another big bang, and looked out our front window right as the engine cowell rolled into the tree. >> reporter: amazingly no one was injured. >> the plane landed, everyone on the ground was safe. >> reporter: passengers boarded a new plane to hawaii. boeing is mending that all its

777 planes using the same pratt and whitney engine be grounded across the globe. and looking at that video, it is shocking that no one was hurt. the national transportation safety board as always is leading this investigation. anne-marie? >> wow. debra alfarone in washington. thanks a lot. the family of an 11-year-old boy who died during last week's storm in texas is suing the state's power providers for $200 million. the wrongful death suit targets entergy and ercot. the boy died tuesday and his mother suspects he suffered hypothermia after a brutally cold night without power inside their mobile home. she says the utility giants put profits over people's welfare by ignoring previous recommendations to winterize its power grid. entergy and ercot say they're unable to comment due to pending litigation. texas governor greg abbott says that power should be

restored later today to everyone in the state. food distribution centers were set up across texas over the weekend, and volunteers handed out fruit and water to help people who are still suffering from the storm. >> it is really mind-boggling. that's why i -- i had to come help however i could. >> watching the news and i saw how bad it was, and i wanted to do my part to help out. >> meantime, another act of kindness. this store outside of austin gave hundreds of shoppers free groceries after a power outage last tuesday. the victims of a powerful earthquake in new zealand are honored in a ceremony today. an outdoor service was held in christchurch, the prime minister spoke. 185 people were killed ten years ago today. a 6.3 earthquake struck the region, reducing 80% of the city's center to rubble. new zealand lowered its flags and made special note of those who could not travel to be there

democratic controlled senate judiciary committee with bipartisan support. in 2016, then-senate majority leader mitch mcconnell refused to allow a hearing for garland when president obama nominated him for a seat on the supreme court. in opening remarks released yesterday, garland pledged to address the threat of domestic extremism if con ticketed. "the tallahassee democrat" says flags will be lowered to half staff in honor of the late conservative radio host rush limbaugh because. the flags will be lowered when his body is laid to rest. it's not sewer when that will be since funeral services have not been announced yesterday. he died after battling lung cancer. and "usa today" says jazz mine harrison of england became the youngest woman to ever row solo across the ocean. >> ladies and gentlemen, jazmine made it across the ocean. let's give her a big hand! come on, jazmine.
