details released overnight about the condition of golf star tiger woods. he underwent surgery following a serious car crash in california. according to a statement posted on his twitter page overnight, woods suffered fractures to his tibia and fibula bones of his right leg. other injuries in his foot and ankle require screws and pins.s deputies say the suv woods was driving yesterday morning went down a hill and rolled over several times. they say he's lucky to be alive. danya bacchus is outside harbor ucla medical center where woods underwent his surgery. so what do we know about how he's doing right now? >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. right now we do know that tiger woods posted to his twitter account a couple of hours ago a statement, it says he is awake, responsive, and recovering after a long surgical procedure. following an early morning car accident in los angeles on tuesday, tiger woods underwent emergency surgery on his lower

right leg and ankle. >> yeah. i'm sick to my stomach just worried for his kids, you know. i'm sure they're struggling. >> reporter: according to a statement post his twitter page doctors at harbor ucla medical center inserted a rod into his tibia and stabilized his foot and ankle with screws and pins. >> very fortunate that mr. woods was able to in out of this alive. >> reporter: los angeles sheriff's deputy carlos gonzalez was first on the scene. >> he told me his name was tiger. i recognized him. >> reporter: emergency responders had to pull woods out through the front windshield of his mangled suv. the crash happened on a road known for speeding and collisions. >> hit the curb, hit a tree, and there were several rollovers during that process. >> reporter: woods has had his share of health issues before the crash. the 15-time major winner was already recovering from his fifth back operation. >> he's 45 years old, but he's really like 60 years old in -- in terms of how his body has been just kind of beaten up over

the years from playing golf. >> reporter: earlier this week, woods said he wasn't sure if his body was ready for in year's masters tournament. >> this is the only back i got. i don't have much more wiggle room left there. >> reporter: woods hosted a pga event in l.a. this weekend and was still working in the area with sponsors. police say there is no evidence woods was impaired. and there was already a doubt in he would be ready to play for the masters tournament in april. this accident adds even more doubt because we don't know when he will be released from the hospital or what the recovery time will be. anne-marie? >> danya bacchus in torrance, california. thank you so much. ahead on "cbs this morning," cbs sports lead golf analyst sir nick faldo joins us to discuss tiger woods and reaction in the golf community. so slowly but surely there are signs of a return to normalcy as more americans get vaccinated against covid.

for stress cracks. they are used solely by boeing 777s. on the united flight, part of the fan appears to have broken, and pieces of the engine fell to the ground. but no one was hurt. we are learning new details about the capitol riot in the first public hearing into what happened that day. senators yesterday questioned the men in charge of security that day. at issue -- why police were so outmanned and overtaken by a large mob. here's madeleine rivera. >> reporter: former capitol hill security officials say they were unprepared for the january 6th assault on the capitol because of faulty intelligence and a breakdown in communication. >> every capitol police daily intelligence report between january 4 and january 6 including on january 6 forecast the chance of civil disobedience or arrests during the protests as remote to improbable. >> reporter: u.s. capitol police now acknowledge they received an fbi report ahead of the attack describing online threats of a, quote, war at the capitol.

>> the united states capitol police department did get that report. i was just advised of that in the last 24 hours. that report made it from the joint terrorism task force over to our intelligence bureau over to a sergeant there, and ceased moving forward at that point. >> reporter: rivera says conflicting information not to request the national guard be put on standby ahead of the rally. former police chief steven sund said he was told on january 4th that bringing in the national guard would be bad optics. former house sergeant-at-arms paul inching insists that wasn't a factor. >> let me be clear -- optics as portrayed in the media played no role whatsoever in my decisions about security. >> reporter: robert conte, chief of police for washington, d.c., the tics of deploying the guard when the request was made during the attack. >> my response to that was simply i was just stunned that -- you know, i have officers that were out there literally fighting for their lives.

buckingham palace says prince philip is being treated for an infection and is not expected to leave the hospital for several more days. the 99-year-old husband of queen elizabeth was admitted to the hospital last week. royal officials call it a precautionary measure. they said philip's illness is not related to the coronavirus. and there was a fiery collision in texas, and a lawsuit was filed in the death a black jogger. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the augusta chronicle" reports the mother of ahmaud arbery filed a civil rights lawsuit on the one-year anniversary of his in three men were arrested and charged with his murder two months later. they have pleaded not guilty. the men allegedly armed themselves and chased arbery in their trucks in response to reports of trespassing in the neighborhood. arbery's mother filed a lawsuit against the three men, police
