launched air strikes in syria. it's president biden's first use of military force since taking office. the air strikes were carried out yesterday in eastern syria near the iraqi border and targeted facilities used by iranian-backed militia groups. this morning, an iraqi militia official said at least one militiaman was killed and several wounded. the pentagon says the strikes were retaliation for a rocket attack in iraq earlier this month. so debra alfarone is in washington. what more can you tell us about this attack? >> reporter: well, i can tell you that this was basically carried out arend e ssage at president biden ll not t usedy irbackedias. it's the first military action taken by this commander in chief. >> we're confident in the target that we went after. we know what we did. >> reporter: the pentagon said

first lady will visit storm-ravaged texas today. they're headed to houston where mr. biden will meet with local officials to discuss ongoing recovery efforts from last week's devastating winter storms. damage from the record cold temperatures and power outages could top $200 billion. the president will also deliver remarks at a coronavirus vaccination center. meantime, there is concern about a new strain of the coronavirus discovered in new york city. what's troubling about it -- the current vaccines may not be effective fighting it. doctors say that the mutation, seen here in red, alters the spike protein which allows the virus to dodge antibodies, and that could result in a weaker immune response. >> so if you received the vaccine, you could get reinfected. wt hat r sure the soh african study with the south african variant showed that protection drops from 90%-plus to about 49%. >> all this comes as the fda

could grant emergency authorization use for the johnson & johnson vaccine as early as today. the drugmaker says that it's ready to ship four million doses. the vaccine only requires one shot. the heightened security at the u.s. capitol following last month's riots will remain in place until at least next month. the acting capitol police chief told lawmakers her agency is looking into disturbing new threats targeting president biden's upcoming speech to a joint session of congress. she said the threats make it necessary to maintain the increased security. >> we know that members of the militia groups that were present on january 6th have stated their desires that they want to blow up the capitol and kill as many members as possible with a direct nexus to the state of the union. >> the date of mr. biden's first formal address to congress has not been scheduled.

"usa today" says new york prosecutors have former president trump's tax records. on monday, the u.s. supreme court rejected mr. trump's last attempt to prevent them from being handed over. the manhattan district attorney's office says prosecutors enforced a subpoena on the former president's accounting firm within hours of the ruling. the documents are part of a wide-ranging investigation into mr. trump's finances and the operations of the trump organization. the records are not expected to be made public. and espn reports tiger woods was transferred to a different hospital following tuesday's car crash that left him with serious leg injuries. doctors say woods was moved to cedars-sinai medical center in los angeles on wednesday. they say woods will undergo continuing orthopedic care and recovery. woods suffered multiple fractures to his lower leg, a rod was placed in his tibia, and screws and pins inserted in his foot and ankle during emergency surgery.
