launched air strikes in syria. it's president biden's first use of military force since taking office. the air strikes were carried out yesterday in eastern syria near the iraqi border and targeted facilities used by iranian-backed militia groups. this morning, an iraqi militia official said at least one militiaman was killed and several wounded. the pentagon says the strikes were retaliation for a rocket attack in iraq earlier this month. so debra alfarone is in washington. what more can you tell us about this attack? >> reporter: well, i can tell you that this was basically carried out arend e ssage at president biden ll not t usedy irbackedias. it's the first military action taken by this commander in chief. >> we're confident in the target that we went after. we know what we did. >> reporter: the pentagon said

it was retaliation for a rocket attack in iraq last week that killed a civilian contractor and wounded an american service member. >> we're confident that that target was being used for the same shia militia that conducted the strikes. >> reporter: the united states says it consulted with coalition partners before action was taken. >> we allowed and encouraged the iraqis to investigate and develop intelligence. and that was very helpful to us. >> reporter: last week's attack in the iraqi city of erbil also wounded several others. >> one of them got brain injury and operated here. and now on the ventilator. >> reporter: in a statement the pentagon said "the operation sends an unambiguous message. president biden will work to protect american and coalition personnel." tte inud violetests at the embas in ghdad and a ike illed iranian general. an official told cbs news that

the syrian town of al buqal was selected as part of a calibrated response to avoid provoking iran to retaliate further. administration officials say that this attack was carried out the way it was to avoid angering u.s. partners in iraq and also avoid provoking iran to retaliate even further. anne-marie? >> debra alfarone in washington. thank you very much. so democratic efforts to raise the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour, well, they were dealt a bit of a setback. yesterday the nonpartisan senate parliamentarian ruled that the hike cannot be part of president biden's proposed pandemic relief package. republicans and some democrats oppose the minimum wage increase. the white house said mr. biden is disappointed. he has said that he is prepared to work on a stand-alone $15 minimum wage proposal. president biden and the

first lady will visit storm-ravaged texas today. they're headed to houston where mr. biden will meet with local officials to discuss ongoing recovery efforts from last week's devastating winter storms. damage from the record cold temperatures and power outages could top $200 billion. the president will also deliver remarks at a coronavirus vaccination center. meantime, there is concern about a new strain of the coronavirus discovered in new york city. what's troubling about it -- the current vaccines may not be effective fighting it. doctors say that the mutation, seen here in red, alters the spike protein which allows the virus to dodge antibodies, and that could result in a weaker immune response. >> so if you received the vaccine, you could get reinfected. wt hat r sure the soh african study with the south african variant showed that protection drops from 90%-plus to about 49%. >> all this comes as the fda

could grant emergency authorization use for the johnson & johnson vaccine as early as today. the drugmaker says that it's ready to ship four million doses. the vaccine only requires one shot. the heightened security at the u.s. capitol following last month's riots will remain in place until at least next month. the acting capitol police chief told lawmakers her agency is looking into disturbing new threats targeting president biden's upcoming speech to a joint session of congress. she said the threats make it necessary to maintain the increased security. >> we know that members of the militia groups that were present on january 6th have stated their desires that they want to blow up the capitol and kill as many members as possible with a direct nexus to the state of the union. >> the date of mr. biden's first formal address to congress has not been scheduled.

and the coach of the 2012 u.s. women's olympic gymnastics team died by suicide. it happened just hours after he was charged with two dozen crimes including human trafficking and sexual assault. 63-year-old john girdert's body was found yesterday at a rest area along a michigan highway. he worked with disgraced sports doctor larry nassar who is in prison for molesting gymnasts. girert accused girls to train at his gym and is accused of abusing them. lady gaga is offering a reward of $500,000 to find her two french bulldogs. they were stolen after a gunman shot the singer's dog walker in hollywood. danya bacchus with the show. -- with the dramatic video. >> reporter: in the shocking surveillance, two suspects jump out of a car and attack lady gaga's dog walker. the man fights back, but seconds later a shot rings out. the suspects took off with gaga's two french bulldogs.

>> i'm shot. >> reporter: wounded on the ground, the 30-year-old victim identifies the dogs' celebrity owner. >> they're lady gaga's dogs. >> reporter: those who live nearby hear the frantic cries for help. >> it was the screaming that alerted me. i heard screaming. like a lot of it. >> our neighbor across told us that he ran out of his house and was like giving the guy bandages and like holding down his wounds. >> reporter: as the investigation continues, it's still not clear if the dog walker was targeted because of his famous client. >> it was a white sedan kind of thing with two doors -- it was two doors on the side open. and that's whe s and someone screaming. but i -- that was the shot. >> reporter: steven lazarof said the victim has been walking lady gaga's dogs for years. >> he started to step back a little bit to focus more -- he's the singer/songwriter, to focus on that. he was heavily involved with the dogsment. >> reporter: lady gaga, filming

tiger woods was transferred to another hospital, and the house passed a sweeping bill. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "washington post" reports the house voted to expand legal safeguards for lgbtq people. three republicans joined democrats yesterday to approve the equality act. it amends existing civil rights laws to prevent businesses and institutions from discriminating against people based on sexual orientation and gender identity. that includes employment, housing, loan applications, education, and other areas. >> lgbtq americans like my daughter want the legal right to marry who they love. the equality act would make sure she can continue living her life with her wife with the security and dignity of knowing she won't face basic discrimination because of who she is. >> the bill faces an uphill battle in the senate where 60 votes are needed.

"usa today" says new york prosecutors have former president trump's tax records. on monday, the u.s. supreme court rejected mr. trump's last attempt to prevent them from being handed over. the manhattan district attorney's office says prosecutors enforced a subpoena on the former president's accounting firm within hours of the ruling. the documents are part of a wide-ranging investigation into mr. trump's finances and the operations of the trump organization. the records are not expected to be made public. and espn reports tiger woods was transferred to a different hospital following tuesday's car crash that left him with serious leg injuries. doctors say woods was moved to cedars-sinai medical center in los angeles on wednesday. they say woods will undergo continuing orthopedic care and recovery. woods suffered multiple fractures to his lower leg, a rod was placed in his tibia, and screws and pins inserted in his foot and ankle during emergency surgery.

lower open this morning following a sell-off that erased gains for the week on wall street. yesterday the dow skidded 559 points. the nasdaq dropped 478, its steepest loss since october. the s&p 500 fell 96. more trouble for boeing. the chicago-based company is being slapped with a $5.4 million fine by the faa. boeing apparently violated the terms of the safety settlement reached in 2015. the company must also pay an additional $1 million to settle a pair of enforcement cases. faa officials say they've told boeing over and over to prioritize safety and comply with regulations. starting next week the minimum wage for workers at costco is going up a buck to $16 an hour. the company ceo announced the increase during a senate hearing yesterday. he says the higher pay will help with worker retention and productivity. some of its competitors including amazon, target, and best buy start their workers at $15 an hour. and don't call them mr. and mrs. potato head anymore. the toys that were invented in

our top stories this morning -- president biden delivered a powerful message to iran in his first use of military force. mr. biden ordered air strikes in eastern syria yesterday against facilities used by iranian-backed militia groups. the pentagon said it was in retaliation for a rocket attack in iraq last week that wounded a u.s. service member and killed a non-american contractor. and a setback for democratic efforts to raise the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour. the nonpartisan senate parliamentarian ruled the hike cannot be part of president biden's proposed pandemic relief package. the wage increase is still part of the relief package that democrats want to push through the house today.
