president harris are heading to atlanta today to offer support to the community and to meet with asian american leaders following a deadly shooting rampage at three spas. outside the spas, memorials are growing for the eight people killed on tuesday. six of them were women of asian descent. suspected gunman 21-year-old robert long is being held without bail. there are reports that long had spent time in a rehab program for his self-described addiction to sex. meanwhile, authorities are still looking at whether the killings were hate crimes. mark strassmann has more on the investigation. >> reporter: surveillance video obtained by the "daily mail" shows long's hyundai pull up to yung's asian massage. he confessed to gunning down four people inside, two of them asian women. moments later, long walked back to his car and drove away. then bedlam as dazed and wounded customers come out and police rush to reports of gunshots. from cherokee county, long

traveled roughly 30 miles to atlanta and at two separate massage spas shot down four more people, all asian women. according to a local korean newspaper, the victim at the aroma therapy spa opened the door thinking long was a customer, but he opened fire, and she was shot dead. >> he did frequent those two locations. >> reporter: atlanta police say it's not clear if the killer targeted specific people. the investigation into a possible hate crime, is that still on the table? >> our investigation is looking at everything. so nothing is off the table for our investigation. >> reporter: there's been a national backlash against the way cherokee county law enforcement initially pointed to long's motive. >> he has some -- some issues. potentially sexual addiction. >> reporter: social media also jumped on how captain jay baker framed the killer's mindset. >> and yesterday was a really bad day for him. this is what he did. >> reporter: making matters worse, baker's anti-asian

facebook post last year promoting t-shirts with the message "covid-19: imported virus from china." in a statement, the cherokee county sheriff said he regretted any suggestion of disrespect for the victims or sympathy for the suspect. there was no mention of the racist t-shirt. mark strassmann, cbs news, atlanta. well, the recent spike in violence against asian americans took center stage in washington. asian american leaders and activists from across the country took part yesterday in a hearing held by the house judiciary subcommittee. congresswoman judy chu of california who chairs the asian pacific american caucus spoke about recent attacks happening in her state. >> many of the victims have been older and vulnerable, like an 84-year-old thai man in san francisco who was killed in an unprovoked assault. today we find that there have been nearly 3,800 anti-asian hate crimes and incidents in just the year alone.

>> one study finds the number of anti-asian hate crimes rose 149% in 16 major u.s. cities in 2020. and now to the latest on the coronavirus battle. some countries in europe today are set to resume using the astrazeneca vaccine after it was deemed safe to use. the eu's drug regulatory agency says the vaccine does not increase the risk of blood clots. the officials say that the benefits of using it outweigh the possible risks. back home now, the u.s. is finalizing plans to send a combined four million doses of the astrazeneca shot to mexico and canada as a loan. naomi ruchim is in new york. this comes as the white house says that the u.s. achieved an important goal. >> reporter: well, presidents often make these lofty goals for their first 100 days in office. for president biden, that was to get 100 million covid-19

vaccines into arms by that day. and now it seems weeks ahead of schedule that milestone will be reached. in the 58 days since president biden took office, the u.s. has administered more than 100 million covid-19 vaccines. the president had set a goal of doing that in his first 100 days. >> i've always said that's just the floor. we will not stop until we beat this pandemic. >> reporter: today mr. biden and vice president kamala harris will visit the cdc headquarters in georgia. cbs news has learned that the agency plans to reduce its social distancing guidance for schools from six feet to three. the change could allow more students to return to class. >> we don't really know what that magical point of herd immunity is. >> reporter: dr. anthony fauci advised caution during an appearance on capitol hill. >> if we pull back prematurely, we may trigger another surge. >> reporter: residents here in new york are among those who listened to warnings like that and get increasingly anxious,

wondering when vaccines will be more widely available. >> we are home like a prisoner. you can't do much. and you can't have people over. you know, hasn't been very good. hopefully, you know, soon, hopefully by july things are much better. >> reporter: after trending downward for weeks, at least 15 states say their infection numbers are once again rising. and for health leaders, there's a little bit of an issue balancing the good news and the bad news. they want people to realize that while more vaccinations are getting out and many places' numbers are improving in terms of infection, they're still going up in other places. meantime here in new york, over at the javits center, they are planning to increase vaccinations to be available 24/7 once the supply is available. anne-marie? >> wow. naomi ruchim in new york. thank you. so ahead on "cbs this morning," dr. anthony fauci

joins us to discuss the latest on covid variants and the country's efforts to get as many people vaccinated as possible. the democratic-controlled house approved a pair of immigration bills as the surge of migrants at the southern border continues. one measure passed last night provides a path to citizenship for about two million undocumented young immigrants known as dreamers. the other would open up citizenship to hundreds of thousands of farm workers. >> dreamers are doctors, nurses, lab technicians, contact tracers, and job creators. >> voting on two bills that not only do nothing to address the problem, it ignores the problem. it will worsen the situation. >> the votes come as the biden administration deals with a huge influx of migrants hoping to seek asylum in the u.s. temporary shelters have been created including one in dallas to process thousands of unaccompanied minors. so coming up, actor armie hammer is under investigation

report last month claiming she was attacked by hammer. investigators did not provide further details or say who made the claim, but the "times" reports a source close to the investigation says it was filed by the same woman who alleged in a news conference yesterday that she was violently raped by hammer in 2017. the woman said she was in a four-year relationship with the actor. hammer's attorney denies the allegations. and montgomery, alabama, advertiser says that wednesday's tornado outbreak in the state damaged dozens of homes and businesses, but nobody was killed. more than a dozen tornadoes were reported. damage was widespread. some people describe harrowing scenes as they sought shelter in basements when the tornado approached. >> she tried to get out of the car to get in the basement. it was pulling her away. my son went out the basement door, grabbed hold of her. things were flying everywhere. it was pulling her, pulling both of them out the door.

>> kay ivy said there were lucky there were no deaths and they escaped relatively unscathed. more than 60,000 people lost power in the state, though. california's "east bay times" reports an amtrak train collided with a utility truck. the incident was caught on cell phone video. >> oh, my god. oh, my god, it's going to hit it. oh, my god. >> there was nobody in the truck. it belonged it a contractor hired by union pacific railroad to clear debris along the tracks. the truck apparently was parked too close to the tracks. amtrak says that there were 111 passengers and crew on the train. nobody was hurt. the train was delayed for about an hour, though. up next, kanye west may have no bragging rights. -- new bragging rights. an estimate of the rapper's net worth shows his fortunes have turned. turned.

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. the nfl announced an unprecedented 11-year broadcast deal with its usual television partners. the biggest changes -- thursday night games will become the exclusive domain of amazon prime. directv's sunday ticket will also no longer be part of the package. monday night football will continue to air on espn, and cbs gets three super bowls and will keep airing afc games. on the cbs "money watch" now, there was a deadly accident involving a peloton treadmill, and a movie theater chain has a big reopening today. diane king hall is in new york with those stories and more. good morning, diane. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. stock futures are indicating a higher open after stocks logged losses during yesterday's

session on wall street. it was fueled in part by moves in the bond market and followed a new report showing initial unemployment claims unexpected lie rose last week. the dow ultimately dropped 153. the nasdaq skidded to 409, and the s&p 500 lost 58. a warning from peloton for parents. the company is urging users to keep children away from its treadmills after a child died in an accident. the company's ceo says the death involved the tread plus, similar to this one. peloton told us it could not share additional information on what happened, quote, out of respect for the family. the company is reminding people to remove the safety key when not in use and safely store the equipment away. twitter wants your opinion on whether world leaders should be subject to the same rules as others on its platform. a survey will be live starting today through april 12th and will be available in 14 languages. the company said it's also consulting with human rights

experts and civil society organizations on the matter to get their feedback. twitter permanently suspended former president trump's account after january's deadly riots at the capitol citing risk of further incitement of violence. the largest movie chain says it will have 98% of its theaters back open today. amc says it plans to have even more theaters open by next friday. the company has strict protocols in place. there will be automatic seat blocking, mask wearing will be mandatory. each venue will have upgraded air filtration and mobile ordering for food and drinks. anne-marie? >> well, you know me, diane, on this schedule, you put me in a dark room, and i'll just fall asleep. i know for a lot of the people, they've been waiting to get back to the theaters. you remember the pleasure of going to the movie theater and -- almost no one is there and you almost have it to yourself. it's going to be like that for a lot of theaters because they're going to be limited capacity. probably a great time to watch

♪ nasa completed a successful engine test on a rocket that it hopes to one day use to send astronauts back to the moon. the four main engines of the boeing-built rocket fired for eight minutes yesterday at a nasa facility in mississippi. during the first test in january, the engines shut off prematurely. nasa wants to return astronauts to the moon by 2024. rapper and fashion designer kanye west is reportedly now the richest black person in u.s. history. bloomberg says his net worth of $6.6 billion includes his clothing company yeezy and shoe deal with with adidas and gap.
