your top story and live look at san francisco tonight. many top elected officials are calling on the vice president of the san francisco board of education to step down. this after disparaging tweets against asian americans that she wrote came to light. we are live at city hall with more on the tweets and have the school board member is responding tonight. the mayor and many city supervisors are calling for commissioner allison collins to resign. the school board member is refusing to step down. san francisco board of education commissioner, allison collins wrote a series of tweets in 2016 in her words to combat anti-black racism in the asian community. she tweeted many asian americans believe they benefit from the model minority bs. many teachers, students and parents actively promote this. they use white supremacist

thinking to assimilate and get ahead. she wrote where are the vocal asians speaking up against trump? don't asian americans know they are on his list as well? do they think they won't be supported -- deported, and beaten then she used a racial slur. she said the tweets were taken out of context and apologized but many people don't buy it including san francisco supervisor, gordon. >> i did speak to the commissioner on friday in the statement she released today which is not what i feel is needed which is a sincere apology. >> reporter: the supervisor did not know about the tweets until friday. he endorsed and voted for collins. now he and many others want her to resign. >> i think the tweets are racially insensitive by painting most asian american families in such a harmful and

negative way. and really in accurate ways as well. >> if commissioner allison collins doesn't resign, does the city or the school district have any power to remove her? >> reporter: no. but here's the thing. even before the tweets surfaced some parents charted a petition to try to gather enough signatures to recall allison collins and two other school board members. if she does not step down, that would be the next opportunity to get her out of office and keep in mind, here in the san francisco unified school district, 52,000 students, one third of those are asian american students. in san francisco, thank you. tonight the bay area is showing support for asian communities in the wake of recent violent attacks. rallies were held in several cities today including brisbane , san francisco and daly city. people waved signs reading asian lives matter and stop the

hate. john ramis on their message of unity and show strength in numbers. >> i am hurting. i have had nightmares. people breaking into my house holding a gun against me. >> reporter: the rally of portsmouth square in chinatown was meant to remember the victims of anti-asian violence. from here in the bay area to the horrific murder of eight people in atlanta. but one man says even though his parents have not been physically attacked, they are still victims as well. >> my parents now don't want to go out. they fear walking on the streets that they will be attacked by random person. >> reporter: the video of the elderly asian woman who had to defend herself with a stick against an attacker on market street has become a symbol for many of how unprotected people feel right now. >> he didn't go around attacking white people. he sought to asians, an asian

man and asian woman and he attacked them. that is a hate crime. >> grandma should not have to defend herself with a stick. we need to provide safety for all community members and it is clear the current systems are not working. >> reporter: while some painted hearts on the sidewalk and wrote messages of love on kites, others are just plain angry and say it is time to stop showing sympathy for those who victimize others on the streets of the city. >> the victims, a lot of them are in house arrest. they won't come out of their house anymore and then you have the assailants. they get a slap on the wrist and they are out. >> we are no longer asking, we are demanding. we are going to speak up whether you like it or not. our voices are going to be heard. >> reporter: john ramis, kpix 5. we are focusing on crime against asian americans in a half hour special tomorrow evening.

join kenny choi and elizabeth cook at 6:34 asians under attack , the bay area reacts. the california teachers association is slamming newly relaxed school guidelines from the cdc and state health department as a confusing message to students, parents and families. under the new rules, elementary students can sit three feet apart instead of six. that is if they are wearing masks. the same goes for older students except in communities where transmission is high. in a statement, the cta president said moving to three feet distance for students in schools and cramming young adults into classrooms will pose a myriad of challenges for our large urban school districts and those that haven't yet implemented the necessary multilayered mitigation measures that the cdc says are essential. six feet of distance is still advised during activities like band or sports practices and in common areas like auditoriums. to boost immunization

equity, a pop-up vaccine clinic was held for eligible seniors and essential workers. the goal was to reach the cities black residents who face higher than average death rates and low vaccination rates. in district 10, but trail hill is one of the only places without a semipermanent covid vaccine site. >> they do not yet have a site. they have stepped in to fill the gap temporarily while the department of public health together the rest of their plan. >> as of today, more than 14 million vaccine doses have been administered across california. the state confirmed just 3100 new covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours and the test positivity rate has dropped below 2%. a stabbing in san jose sent one man to the hospital. it happened just after 5 pm in the area of west santa clara street and highway 87. police say the victim had life- threatening injuries and one suspect has been detained.

we are learning tonight a bystander saved an elderly man who fell into the water at treasure island. this is video from the scene. san francisco fire crews say the 75-year-old man fell in at clifford cove near the avenue of the palms. luckily somebody jumped in to help pull him out of the water. still ahead on kpix 5 and cbsn bay area, a terrifying close call just to get a selfie. a father enters an allison enclosure with his young daughter. how it nearly took a tragic turn. >> the groucho starts yelling and they were like dude, you have to get out of there. ed bay area dive bar is getting ready to auction off memorabilia. how you can get your hands on a piece of history. coming up in the forecast i have two opposites. a frost advisory for tonight and tomorrow we will follow that up i looking at temperatures that are about to climb to 10 degrees above

right now the san francisco police are asking for your help in finding a suspect in a violent assault on a muni bus. it happened back in october. the victim was thrown out the back door of a 14 mission bus hitting his head on the sidewalk. they want to talk to the woman who was with the suspect. the victim has been hospitalized ever since that attack back in october with a traumatic brain injury. when santa rosa police arrested a 32-year-old man suspected of intentionally running over a motorcyclist. it happened yesterday morning under the west ninth street overpass.

authorities say james however allegedly sped up and hit a person on his bike. the impact through the victim 30 feet away into offense. the victim was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay. so far no word on a motive. this is a video that will have you shaking your head. a southern california father now facing charges after taking his toddler into an elephant enclosure at the san diego zoo. the father and his two-year-old daughter were seen posing for a picture inside the elephant enclosure and then it quickly turned dangerous. in the cell phone video as you can see, the elephant started charging toward both of them. in his rush to escape the father put his girl on the ground, climbed over the fence and then rushed to pick her up as the elephant charged toward them. one expert said the elephant was trying to protect its space and things could have been much worse.

>> it is an extremely dangerous situation and no one in their right mind really should ever do this. i think they were both very very lucky. san diego police arrested the 25-year-old father, booked him into jail on charges of child neglect, child abuse and trespassing. video tonight shows streams of hot lava flowing from a volcano. it is about 20 miles southwest of iceland's capital. the volcano had been dormant for about 6000 years but last night it erupted sending fountains of lava oozing out. officials say it is not impacting air travel, at least not yet and it is not threatening surrounding towns. since we are on this earth science topic, we go to darren peck with the latest on our weather. >> it wasn't as good a show as a volcano today but it was a good show if you like watching clouds. in northern california look at

these billowing cumulus clouds from this afternoon. you can think of them as humble cumulus clouds because they didn't build that big. if you enjoy that kind of thing, it's over. we won't see that again tomorrow. the pattern that allowed those clouds to build has cleared. we are completely removing the chance of rain for the next seven days and probably longer and the story now is the warm-up for afternoon and daytime highs. before we get to that we have a cold night ahead. clear skies out there now. our camera at treasure island looking at the skyline. in the morning lows only some of us need to pay attention and it is the usual spots. santa rosa, 31 for the morning low. 35 in napa. if you are in the immediate pay, low 40s. i doubt you will notice anything in particular about the morning lows tomorrow because that is pretty typical. we will get down to 36 and that will be cold but for that in

santa rosa, 31. that is cold enough the national weather service without a frost advisory. that drive on 101 through marin and up into napa. if you have plans or anything that would be delicate and vulnerable to temperatures in the low 30s, cover them up. now we get to the warm-up. it starts tomorrow but we are only just beginning. these numbers tomorrow are going to be about 7-8 degrees warmer than today. without the cloud show and with less of a breeze. sunday will be the nicer day of the two from this weekend so far and then the weekend gets going. concord, 66 will be the average daytime high for this time of year. orange line shows you what we are about to do. we will be up to 74 by the time you get to thursday. san jose 67 is the average for this time of year. we will outdo that by the time i get to wednesday and thursday up in the mid-70s and to use oakland as my example in the bay

there is really not that big of a difference here. 71 in oakland. san francisco 68, 69 by the time i get to wednesday and thursday so everybody will notice the warm-up. big ridge of high pressure will keep us blocked and watch it grow. it will go into a big contorted warm-up. it explains the warm- up and explains why we are out of the rain business for a while. you get a ridge that is that exaggerated, storms can't get here and what you get is plenty of sun and warm mid-70s focused right in the middle of that seven-day forecast. we will start to cool things back down again next weekend. there's just not any real hope we are getting rain out of that. over to you. this is my ncaa march madness bracket. it's a disaster. coming up, can gonzaga remain unbeaten. the one huge mistake that cost

lebron james is out indefinitely after suffering a high ankle sprain and the lakers lost to the hawks on saturday. la was already without their other star, anthony davis. he has been out more than a month with a leg injury. gonzaga trying to become the first team since the ford administration to finish the season undefeated and the first round game tonight against the bulldogs showed why they are the national title favorite. corey and gonzaga darn near perfect against norfolk state. show time for the dogs, off the glass. freshman sensation, jaelyn suggs , he is nba bound. gonzaga blew out the spartans 98-55. they remain unbeaten. to the eyes, sharks hosting the blues on second of back to back. san jose down to-1. they go one- on-one with the goalie. scored to tie the game with
