the u.s. government is housing more than 15,000 unaccompanied migrant children, and that includes 5,000 minors who are currently in facilities not designated for long-term custody. lawmakers from both sides of the aisle want more transparency from the biden administration. they want journalists allowed inside the facilities. elise preston has the latest from new york. elise, does the president have plans to visit the border at all? >> reporter: well, good morning, anne-marie. the president says he might visit the border soon, but a timeline is not clear. the number of migrants seeking to enter the united states is surging. thousands now occupy camps along the mexican border waiting for a chance to apply for asylum. >> now is not the time to come. do not come. the journey is dangerous. >> reporter: homeland security secretary alejandro mayorkas is warning migrants against

entering the country saying the border is closed, though an exception is being made for unaccompanied children. mayorkas says the situation is the result of president trump's immigration approach. >> there was a system in place in both republican and democratic administrations that was torn down during the trump administration. >> reporter: republican lawmakers are blaming president biden, saying he reversed president trump's policies before a back up plan was ready. >> the border right now is wide open because the biden administration dismantled the very effective policies of the trump administration and the agreements we had with mexico and other latin american countries. >> reporter: on sunday the president told reporters the u.s. can do more to help the migrants. >> what we're doing now, re-established what was in place. >> reporter: mr. biden says he may soon visit the border to get a firsthand look at the conditions there. and in a statement issued last

night, former president trump called on the biden administration to restart construction on a wall at the mexican border. anne-marie? >> all right. elise, thank you so much. ahead on "cbs this morning," senator chris murphy's going to join us in his first interview to discuss his visit to a border facility last week and what he'd like to see the biden administration to ease the migrant situation. covid vaccinations are ramping up. more than 81 million people have received at least one dose. of those, 44 million are fully vaccinated. that's more than 13% of the total population. breaking overnight, the astrazeneca vaccine may be one step closer to approval in this country. results of a large u.s. study found it was 79% effective against the virus. a safety panel also found no high risk of blood clots following several reports in europe. meantime, there is some

concern of new outbreaks with spring break under way. lilia luciano explains. >> reporter: a state of emergency in miami beach after police and s.w.a.t. teams were called out last night to clear streets of rowdy spring breakers. dan gelber is the city's mayor. >> we don't want to be a superspreader. >> reporter: do you know why it's so chaotic? >> the whole country's been in lockdown, and there are people who want to get somewhere and let loose. >> reporter: americans are increasingly on the move. 1.4 million flyers went through u.s. airports on friday, setting a pandemic record. but with more travelers, more tension. this fight broke out in ft. lauderdale after several passengers got kicked off a flight for refusing to wear masks. there's cause for concern. infections are still rising in at least 36 states, even as vaccinations accelerate. >> we're continuing to put protective immunity into the population.

>> oregon advances, the game's not going to be played -- >> reporter: covid has also hit the ncaa tournament. virginia commonwealth university sent home without playing a game after several team members tested positive. in l.a., tourists are back, once again flocking to historic hollywood boulevard. >> we now have reopened places cautiously with the lessons learned. >> reporter: the mayor says this is the most optimistic he's been in a year. one reason why, the positivity rate is 1.3%. lilia luciano, cbs news, santa monica. the nfl is investigating allegations of inappropriate conduct and sexual assault against football star deshaun watson. at least seven women are suing the houston texans quarterback. an attorney representing them plans to submit affidavits and evidence in the case today. some of the women who were working as massage therapists claim watson assaulted or harassed them during or before massage sessions last year.

watson tweeted a statement denying any illegal conduct. rallies were held nationwide over the weekend protesting the increase in violence and racism against asian americans. [ chants ] a large group marched through the streets of new york city calling for solidarity. in california, home to the nation's largest asian population, hundreds of people walked to chinatown grieving for victims of racist and sexist attacks. >> it's a personal choice to say no, enough is enough. i cannot stand by and watch another grandpa, grandma be pushed over with violence and killed and murdered. >> the rallies come after an increase in violence against asian americans including last week's shooting rampage at three atlanta area spas where eight people died including six women of asian descent. defense secretary lloyd austin made his first visit to

much of the grounds have looked like a fortress for nearly three months. vehicles were also allowed back on the streets near the capitol complex this weekend. a father was arrested after entering an elephant's habitat with his child, and a congressman has apologized for sexual misconduct. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the new york times" reports new york republican representative tom reed says that he won't run for any political office next year after being accused of groping a woman. the 49-year-old apologized after a woman said that he touched her inappropriately in 2017 when she was a 25-year-old lobbyist. in a statement, reed said that the incident occurred at a time in his life when he was struggling with alcohol addiction. last month, reed said that he was considering running next year against embattled new york governor andrew cuomo. reed is also up for re-election in 2022. the "san diego union tribune" says a father was arrested after carrying his

2-year-old daughter into an elephant habitat at the san diego zoo. cell phone video shows the elephant charging toward the father and daughter on friday. the father dropped his child as they tried to escape. he picked her up and carried her to safety. police say the 25-year-old wanted to take a photo with the elephant. >> it's an extremely dangerous situation, and no one in their right mind really should ever do this. it was incredibly dangerous for the father and child, and i think they were both very, very lucky. >> the father was arrested on suspicion of child endangerment. the zoo says the elephant was not harmed. and "usa today" reports an aide to donald trump says that the former president is planning a return to social media with his own platform. senior adviser jason miller told fox news yesterday that he thinks mr. trump will be back on social media in about two to three months. miller said numerous companies have approached the former president, and he's held

from last weekend. on the cbs "money watch" now, the jeep suv brand is facing criticism from native americans, and the board game "monopoly" is getting an update. diane king hall is in new york with those stories and more. good morning, diane. >> reporter: good morning. on the economic docket this week, investors will keep a watch on another set of inflation data. the government is set to release a report on a personal consumption expenditures for february. meantime, stocks ended mixed on friday. the dow dropped 234 points, the nasdaq gained 99, and the s&p 500 shed two points. jeep's newest edition of the cherokee series arrives this spring, but it's not incorporated the changes that some native americans are calling for. the suv will have a reworked design, but it will have the same name. there have been growing calls for the company to change the branding on its vehicles which carry the name of the largest indigenous tribe in the u.s. jeep's new parent company has signaled it's open to discussion, but in a statement to cbs news, the company says, quote, our vehicle names have

been carefully chosen to honor and celebrate native american people. meantime, a chicago suburb is on track to become the first city in the nation to offer reparation money to black residents who suffered from decades of racist government policies. the evanston city council is voting to begin contributing $400,000 in grants to black residents. families will get up to $25,000 for home repairs, down payments, or mortgage statements. in order to get the cash, they must prove they were subjected to housing discrimination by the city government. and hasbro is counting on you to help give "monopoly" a modern twist. the company is kicking off a global campaign to change its community chest cards. mr. monopoly went around new york city to get the word out. hasbro wants people to reflect on what community means to them. they can vote for cards like shop local or help your neighbors. this would be the first major change to the board game in 85 years. and anne-marie, i recently

lowe's home to any budget. home to any possibility. here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ a long dormant volcano in iceland is spewing lava. friday's eruption sent lava flowing across the valley about 20 miles from the capital reykjavik. this is the first eruption on the peninsula where the volcano is located in almost 800 years. it came after about 50,000 small earthquakes shook the area in recent weeks. scientists say it's a minor eruption and poses no danger. the ncaa is apologizing after being criticized for the stark difference in the fitness

facilities provided to the men and the women competing in the college basketball tournaments. oregon's sedona prince gave us a glimpse at the weight room differences in a social media video last thursday. >> so for the ncaa march madness, the biggest tournament in college basketball for women, this is our weight room. let me show you all the men's weight room. >> as you can see, the men were provided with a lot more equipment than the women. it did not take long for the ncaa to make changes, though. prince posted another video on saturday showing a new and improved women's weight room with a lot more equipment. she thanked the ncaa for making the changes. loyola chicago and sister jean are heading back to the sweet 16 of the men's basketball tournament. >> the ramblers pulled off a huge upset yesterday defeating number-one seed illinois 71-58. in 2018, loyola chicago made a surprising run all the way to the final four. once again, their biggest fan, 101-year-old team chaplain sister jean, is rooting them on in person. she delivered a pregame prayer yesterday asking for special help to overcome illinois. up next for loyola is oregon state. and thanks to a bunch of upsets in the men's tournament, there are no perfect brackets remaining. according to the ncaa.com, there were about 20 million individual brackets played on its site, espn, cbs sports, "sports illustrated," and yahoo!. there were still three perfect brackets left heading into the maryland-connecticut game on saturday, but maryland's upset win took care of that. the odds for a perfect bracket through all of the 63 tournament games is one in more than nine

our top stories -- the humanitarian crisis at the u.s./mexico border is intensifying. the u.s. government is housing more than 15,000 unaccompanied migrant children. that includes 5,000 minors who are currently in facilities not designed for long-term custody. and a state of emergency has been declared in miami beach. authorities are concerned large crowds gathering for spring break pose a coronavirus risk. as a result, an 8:00 p.m. curfew will be extended

through april 12th. there have been more than 1,000 arrests since partygoers started to arrive. turning to a massachusetts community where neighbors came together to help a family. nancy chen explains. >> reporter: scraping snow is a chore most people dread, but for jane cunningham it's a blessing. >> this is the home everybody's grown up in. >> reporter: her home of 25 years in sudbury, massachusetts, was a sanctuary as she became a single mother raising three children including a son diagnosed with cancer. but the house that was their foundation was falling apart. the roof collapsed. animals invaded, and they stopped living in parts of the home for their health. >> there's mold everywhere. other things are crumbling. it was kind of like our life fell apart a few years ago. it just became too much. >> reporter: with medical debt climbing, cunningham had few options but to move until a friend started a fundraiser to replace her roof. it caught the eye of construction executive dave fenton who immediately started making calls.

>> it was in my town, and you know, without a doubt it was something we needed to do. >> reporter: before long, about 20 people got involved donating materials and labor to fix the house. >> the roof had to go first. then we went on the inside, and there was a ton of mold, drywall rot, insulation was in disrepair. so i reached out to another friend of ours who does a lot of that work, and they came in with a demolition crew. >> reporter: the community raised about $50,000 worth of donations to repair her home and pay off medical bills, changing the lives of cunningham and her family. >> when you're carrying a lot of problems alone, it can feel very alone with them and very overwhelmed. what they did is like taking a boulder off my back. >> here we go. this is it. so this is my new family room. doesn't it look great? >> reporter: sometimes it takes a village to give a home. nancy chen, cbs news, new york. coming up first on "cbs this
