office 64 days ago, president biden will hold his first official press conference today. he's been criticized by republicans and some allies for waiting so long to formally take questions from the media, and certainly there's no shortage of topics. elise preston is in new york. what can we expect from today's presser? >> reporter: anne-marie, that press conference will be held in the east room of the white house. among topics expected -- covid-19, guns, and immigration. >> mr. president -- > reporter: president biden is holding the first press conference of his presidency today. mr. biden is expected to promote ms. coronavirus relief bill and his administration's success in ramping up the vaccination effort. >> 100 million shots before my we did it in about 60 days. >> reporter: since the press conference was announced last week, there have been two mass shootings that have claimed the lives of 18 people in georgia and colorado. >> it's so sad that we have to lose lives in order to motivate

people aet >> reporter: with action from congress unlikely, the white house is considering at least three executive actions -- strengthening background checks, blocking the sale of gun-making kits, and providing more funding to fight gun violence. >> no one is talking about overturning or changing the second amendment. >> reporter: also expected to come up today, immigration at the southern border which mr. biden's activity cittics say has turned into a crisis on his watch. >> the biden administration has lost control of the southern border. >> reporter: yesterday president biden told vice president hairs to work on the issue. >> the work will not be easy, but it is important work. >> reporter: mr. biden will likely discuss north korea. this morning the country test fired its first ballistic missiles since he took office. president biden has waited the longest time in the last 100

years of any president before giving his first proper press conference. although he has taken some questions at other events. anne-marie? >> all right. elise preston in new york. thank you so much. now on to one of those shootings that elise talked about. the gunman suspected of killing ten people at a supermarket in boulder, colorado, will make his first court appearance today. ahmad alissa is charged with ten counts of murder in monday's rampage. a motive remains unclear. as nancy chen reports, authorities may be focusing on his mental health. >> reporter: the uncle of 25-year-old boulder shooting victim ricky olds says there's a hole in his family that won't be filled. >> try to fill it with memories. >> reporter: the second massacre in a work, she worked at the market for more than seven years. >> she would do anything to make you smile. >> reporter: 62-year-old victim lynn murray's daughter spoke out about the loss. >> looking at her car in the

parking lotment. >> reporter: police say the suspect in custody, ahmad alissa, was convicted of misdemeanor assault for beating up a student in high school in 2018. he said he had been bullied by the student for a year because of his middle eastern background. although dozens of witnesses said the attack was unprovoked, he said he was so angry he had blacked out. >> he threatened that he was going to kill everyone. no one took it seriously. >> reporter: as the nation mourns, colorado's governor and others visited a nearby memorial for the victims. in a procession made it way to fallen boulder police officer eric talley, who was killed after arriving on the scene. he was trans ported to a funeral home. nancy chen, cbs news. meanwhile, a 22-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly attacked -- rather, walked into an atlanta grocery store with five guns and body armor. witnesses say the suspect identified by police as rico marley entered this publix and

walked straight into the bathroom. he had two long guns and three pistols. he's been charged with reckless conduct. the publix said no one was injured. overnight, astrazeneca has released updated data on the it volca vaccine. and the efficacy rate shows the shot is 76% at stopping the virus. on monday the drug giant said it was 79% effective. the drugmaker was accused of using outdated information. astrazeneca plans to seek emergency use authorization in the coming weeks. another developing story this morning is the crisis at the border. as we mentioned, pine has tasked vice president kamala harris to lead the white house effort on that situation. she'll work on stemming the flow of migrants, the asylum-seeking process, and partnering with central american countries to address the root causes of the

problem. meantime, reports -- the white house officials and lawmakers have toured a migrant housing facility in texas yesterday. this one is holding more than 750 teenagers who crossed without their parents. >> much more needs to be done. i think that we ned to work harder to ensure that we connect these children with their families. there's a lot of reasons why that's not happening quick enough. >> border patrol is holding more than 16,500 unaccompanied children in custody right now. north korea test fired its first ballistic missiles since president biden took office. you're looking at footage from projectile launches over the last two years. a south korean official said the two short-range missiles were fired early morning from an area on the northeastern coast. u.s. officials said the military is aware of the launch and is monitoring the situation while consulting with allies. dr. rachel levine is the
