this morning the eyes of the nation are on minneapolis. opening statements are set for today in the highly anticipated trial of derek chauvin. the former police officer charged with killing george floyd. yesterday family and friends of floyd held a prayer vigil at a minneapolis church. it came more than 10 ms after floyd died while in police custody. skyler henry is in minneapolis. what can we expect today? >> reporter: hey, good morning to you. in the months since george floyd's death, there have been calls for justice as well as conversations about race and policing in this country. all of which culminating today as the trial against derek chauvin gets under way. opening statements begin in the trial of a former police officer accused of killing george floyd. derek chauvin has pleaded not guilty to murder and manslaughter charges. a bystander's video shows floyd on the ground and in handcuffs with chauvin's knee on his neck

for roughly nine minutes. [ chants ] >> reporter: the incident sparked worldwide outrage and months of protests demanding justice. floyd's bother joined supporters at another rally last night. >> i have faith that he will get convicted. just like everybody who's seen that video because the video is the proof. >> reporter: here in minneapolis, authorities are bracing for unrest surrounding the trial which will be broadcast live from inside of the courtroom. an attorney for floyd's family predicted the defense would try to smear the victim. >> because he had a trace amoun they're saying, oh, that's what killed him, not what derek chauvin did. >> reporter: chauvin and three other officers were fired the day after floyd's death. the others are charged with aiding and abetting murder and manslaughter and are due to stand trial in august. now there's another rally expected outside of the courthouse later today.

in terms of security, the government center where the trial is taking place is closed to the public. it's also surrounded by fencing, as well as concrete barriers. we're also expected to see an increased police presence throughout the city as well as the national guard. anne-marie? >> all right. skyler henry in minneapolis. thank you so much. well, there is word of a breakthrough this morning in the effort to free a massive cargo ship that has been wedged in the suez canal. the former chairman of the suez canal authority tells cbs news that the ship is now free. early today, a canal services company said engineers partially refloated the ship's bow after innse efforts by tugboats an dredbu stk t tuethed in e of the world's busiest waterways last tuesday. the blockage has disrupted global shipping, costing billions in lost trade every day. and a major cleanup is under

way in tennessee after record rainfall. severe flooding killed at least four people over the weekend. a bystander captured this water rescue in nashville where a man pulled a stranded woman from her flooded car. he helped her to safety, and it appeared that both were going to be okay. nancy chen has more on these storms and where they're headed next. >> reporter: this weekend, flooding swamped tennessee. water rushing across streets, leaving a school bus submerged and cars floating. in nashville, the second largest two-day rainfall on record. emergency crews rescuing more than 250 people from vehicles, apartments, and houses overnight into sunday morning. >> we have about 251 incidents. it took 600 of our fire personnel to respond to these events. >> reporter: a man seen pulling a woman from her submerged car. the same system sent at least 15 reported tornadoes across four states. one possible twister r

flattened, trees slicing through homes. >> i really was thanking god that we was all okay from the situation, especially after seeing the house. >> reporter: it comes just two days after a separate system hit noonan, georgia, where volunteers are finding places for displaced people to stay. it's only the tenth ef-4 tornado to hit the state in 70 years. georgia governor brian kemp -- >> total destruction in many places. >> reporter: a quickly as the tornado struck, the cleanup begins as crews remove trees, branches, and debris. that same storm system is moving up into the mid-atlantic states with a lower tornado risk but strong wind gusts still packing a punch. nancy chen, cbs news, new york. as more americans get vaccinated against the coronavirus there's a concern about possible new surge in cases.

the cdc says more than 93 million people in the u.s. have received at least one dose of the vaccine. more than 51 million have been fully vaccinated. that's 20% of adults. yesterday on "face the nation," president biden's chief medical adviser dr. anthony fauci warned about what could lie ahead. he said the nation is at risk after getting stuck at around 50,000 new cases per day. >> i've said many times to you that when you're coming down from a big peak and you reach a point and start to plateau, once you stay at that plateau, you are really in danger of a surge coming up. and unfortunately, that's what we're starting to see. >> 47 states say that anyone 16 or older will be eligible to get a vaccine by may 1st. new york, arkansas, and wyoming have yet to commit to that. meantime, a long-awaited report on the origins of covid could be released this week. the "associated press" obtained a draft copy saying the

transmission of the virus from bats to humans through another animal is the most likely scenario. scientists ruled out the possibility of the virus escaping from a lab. the report which could still change is based on a visit by a team of international experts who spent several weeks this year in wuhan. and there are new you developments this morning following a suicide bomb attack at a roman catholic church in indonesia. two attackers believed to be members of a militant network that pledged allegiance to the islamic state group blew themselves up outside a packed palm sunday mass. at least 20 people were hurt. both attackers were killed. overnight, local media reported police found explosives related to the attack in a raid outside the capital of jakarta. coming up, the u.s. men's soccer team misses the olympics again. and a shakeup at "the talk." sharon osbourne is out after following allegations of racism.

experience the shooter's roughly 30-mile trip to the atlanta area locations. they also said that they wanted to call attention to growing anti-asian hate in america. the chair of the congressional asian pacific american caucus called the shootings a federal hate crime. >> he was definitely targeting those three asian spas, and he was certainly by shooting into those spas going to kill asian women. >> 21-year-old robert aaron long has been charged with eight counts of murder. "reuters" says pope francis led palm sunday services in an almost-minute st. peter's basilica. for the second year, coronavirus restrictions limited the size of the crowd for the start of holy. the pope was joined by about 120 people and about 30 cardinals at mass. traditionally the pope leads a palm sunday procession through st. peter's square in front of thousands. yesterday pope francis said that

investors are looking ahead to two major economic reports this week. the consumer confidence index due tomorrow and the march jobs report that's out on friday. meantime, the latest government stimulus and progress with the vaccine rollout gave the markets a boost last week. on friday, the dow shot up some 453 points. the nasdaq jumped 161, and the s&p 500 gained 65. the state of new york is getting closer to legalizing recreational marijuana. lawmakers reached a deal to set up a licensing and taxation system for recreational sales. officials could vote on a bill as early as tomorrow. it could bring in $350 million each year, but sales wouldn't start for possibly 18 months in order for the state to create a cannabis board. all that personal protective equipment you bought over the past year is tax deductible. the irs says you can write off items including masks, hand sanitizer, and disinfecting wipes. it covers ppe purchased since january 1st, 2020, but you'll

development, but local activists started a campaign and saved the historic property from demolition. it will now be used to house four low-income families at its new location. after 11 seasons, sharon osbourne has decided to leave "the talk." it comes after she defended piers morgan who said he did not believe that meghan markle following her interview this month with oprah winfrey. osbourne later apologized on twitter. previous co-hosts have since accused osbourne of racist and homophobic behavior. she denies the allegations.
